This place SAVED MY WEDDING!!!  I found out that my caterer was going to be closed during the time of my wedding THREE WEEKS BEFORE THE WEDDING!  We  wanted to have Soul Food for our wedding dinner and we spent the next two weeks looking high and low, trying food from all over the city and beyond and we found nothing.  Places wouldn't call us back and that was even after they heard it was for our wedding a week and a half away!!  Finally, one week to the day before our wedding, it was suggested that we try Off The Hook in Haverstraw.  We went and tried the food.  ALL EXCELLENT!!  They worked with our budget to get us all the foods we wanted for the price we had budgeted!  They were caring and kind and if you've ever been a bride you know how desperate you are for that a week before your wedding especially when you have no food for the reception yet!!  Tony, one of the owners, gave me his personal email and cell phone and constantly contacted me to reassure me that things were fine.  That is all wonderful, but the icing on the cake is, THE FOOD WAS FANTASTIC!!!!  It was all anyone could talk about!!  I had family in from out of town and it was all they could talk about as well.  One of my bridesmaids looked at me half way through dinner and said, "Is it possible this food gets better tasting the more you eat it??!!"  Truly, this is a place that was a life saver for me in the most stressful time in my life as well as THE BEST SOUL FOOD IN ROCKLAND COUNTY!!!  HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT!!!
Review Source:Went here yesterday for the first time and I absolutely loved it. Â I had fried whiting with a side of candied yams, my bf had fried catfish with candied yams and cole slaw and my son had fried shrimp and fries. Â
Everything was fresh and the price is right.
The young man who took the orders was a pleasure to deal with and very welcoming.
We will definitely be back!!
been here 4 times and the food has gotten worse each time. Shrimp were rubber and not fresh, whiting dried out and burnt. Macaroni and cheese taste like plaster , potato salad was sour .Never have clams when i asked for them.Workers are rude and wont give you what u ask for. This place has sunk.
Review Source:The food here is great and price is extremely fair. The whiting here was one of the best I have ever had.
Parking not always there but i would park a mile down the street for the food here. Atmosphere is friendly and the people are very nice.
If you like fish and chips this is the best in the county, hands down, now that I think about it....it might be the best anywhere!!
My family and I were driving through Haverstraw on a Sunday aftrernoon when we all wanted to stop to grab a bite to eat on the road. Â Children wanted pizza so we pulled into this small shopping plaza. Â Two doors down from the pizza shop a sign caught my eye - Off The Hook - fish & chips. Â I thought - I'll pick up pizza for the kids but I want fish & chips. Sure enough it was the best decision we made. Â My husband and I loved it. Â We purchased the traditional fish & chips with sides of mac & cheese, collard greens, homemade coleslaw & potato salad. Â All was great and we had left overs, too. Â I thought it was excellent and can't say enough of how delicious and fresh everything was.
Review Source:You might not know it but Off The Hook has been around in West Haverstraw for over 4 years. Â Newly relocated to Route 9W, this is a Harlem-style fish and chips place. Â Forget everything that you know about traditional fish and chips. Â Here you will get freshly line-caught red snapper, porgy, and whiting alongside Southern-style classics like fried oysters, clams and tiger shrimp. Â
Breading does not overwhelm the fish. Â Seems like a light cormeal-dusted batter that gives everything a nice crunch without any grease. Â Fish is very tender and sides are homemade and also excellent. Â Some standout side dishses include the perfectly seasoned and traditionally prepared collared greens and fresh cut sweet potato fries. Â Save room for old-fashioned lemon poundcake, baked in-house by the owner's mom. Â
AMBIANCE: Â I wouldn't throw my birthday party here. Â But it's clean and spacious enough to sit down and enjoy some serious fried fish. Â Take out is a good idea. Â Two Stars.
FOOD: Â Super. Â See above. Â Four stars.
COST: Â You can get 6 pieces of whiting or tilapia AND 10 large tiger shrimp for $20. Â It's a ton of food. Â Porgy and red snapper are market priced. Â 10 shrimp and chips for $12.25. Original Fish and Chips - 2 fillets of whiting or tilapia with chips for just $4.25. Â Pretty good value right here and very reasonable price points. Â Four stars.
SERVICE: Â Very friendly, knowledgeable and efficient. Â The owners are also fisherman and sometimes take your order personally. Â Four stars.
IF YOU GO: Â For the health-conscious or if you don't like anything fried, you can get anything on the menu steamed. Â Hours are irregular - Monday and Tuesday they're closed. Â Wednesday 2p - 9p; Thursday 11:30a - 10:00p; Friday/Sat 12:00p - 11:00p; Sunday 1p - 7p.
