Basic American lunch fare......soups, sandwiches, hand cut fries served on old fashioned mismatching plates.  Delicious hand cut fries, sandwiches were made to order and fresh, and the atmosphere had a very old-timey feel.  Good food, good service, decent prices, but it just took a long time for us to get our food.....about 40 minutes from ordering until our food arrived.

Wow...after reading all the great reviews about this place, I thought that it was actually going to be good.  I am so disappointed.  The only thing that impressed me was the atmosphere and decor.

I ordered the seasonal off the square salad with raspberry vinaigrette and grilled chicken.  The salad was so plain, the chicken was dry with absolutely no flavor at all.  The "raspberry vinaigrette" looked more like purple paste.  It was horrible.  There was not a single bit of flavor in this salad.  Oh, and the sweet tea tasted like it was steeped in with several cigarette buds.  It was nasty.

My son had the lil' tenders with sweet potato chips.  The "tenders" was a piece of chicken breast, half breaded, deep fried and cut up- no seasoning whatsoever on it.  The sweet potato chips were soggy, burnt- obviously over cooked.

Sadly to say, I would not go back.

It is nice to be able to visit my hometown and find an outstanding restaurant that consistently produces fine food.  Like another reviewer at this site I have been here a number of times and have never been disappointed.  Besides their regular menu, the chef is always surprising us with his creative specials.  More than delicious food, it demonstrates how you can take an old building and make something special.  I plan to bring friends and family from Mount Holly to dine here (bypassing many great restaurants in Charlotte).  Worth the drive!  Oh yes....and Saturday brunch is remarkable! Great wines and spirits including some good microbrews.  Fresh and Local are a huge part of their success!

I ate here about 4 or 5 times before reviewing to get a good feel for the food and service. Both of which are good. Nothing super special, typical americana menu you see in 100's of restaurants. Ribeye for beef, grill chicken pasta and so forth. I recommend the fish and chips for lunch.

I can't believe a place this good is here in Albemarle!!

The food is awesome - the service impeccable - the atmosphere, wow! the prices (is that all??)

no matter lunch or dinner - this is a fine addition to our area and a welcome change of pace of 'fry it all' - James and Ashley have a phenomenal place and it is always a pleasure to have lunch or dinner there -

I LOVED THIS RESTAURANT!  I wish this was more at the top of the Yelp list when I was there because I didn't go to this place  at first and wish I did.  The owners are very nice and have a great passion for the foods they created and provide. I strongly recommend this place for lunch, I didn't go here for dinner but have to think its got to be as good their lunch.  I got the shredded beef tacos and they were AWESOME!  I hope you enjoy this as much as I did!

Off the Square is a welcome addition to the Albemarle dining scene!  Please stay.

This storefront has been converted into digs with atmosphere AND my food was delicious.   There are paintings by local artists hanging on one wall, the ceiling is tiled and painted gold with lovely little lights descending, and the bar area is small but nice.

My waiter was friendly and apologetic for the wait, which was not too long but was present in every phase of the lunch-rush experience.  The space is small.  Every available inch is occupied by dining space.  The wait staff was weaving in and out of the diners with agility.  There was a 10 minute wait around 12:30.  All this to say that I would recommend going before or after the lunch rush if you have the chance.

I ordered the veggie burger, a homemade blend of chick peas, veggies and spices that was elegantly balanced.  It came with a side salad that was fresh and a yummy balsamic dressing.  The homemade croutons were a nice touch, as was the little bit of quality grated cheddar cheese on top.

This is a step above the other eating I've done in Albemarle restaurants, and Off the Square's lunch menu is reasonably priced.  My meal with water was about $6.50.  The lunch menu varied between $4.50 for a bowl of soup and $10 for a crab cake sandwich.  There were also delicious-sounding treats like shredded beef tacos and shrimp bisque on the list.  I'm excited to check out the dinner options.
