The tavern is an experience, especially on busy nights. We were here for the countdown to new years 2013 and talk about busy. It was standing room only and getting a drink was a planned event. The music was great atmosphere was fun the only reason its not 5 star is getting a drink was a battle. If you are ever in town for Steelman's birthday stop by for a serious cayucos party.
Review Source:This place is quite a gem in the middle of nowhere. Actually its within 30 minutes of Hearst Castle and about 45 minutes from Paso Robles. So in the event you want to wake up on the beach and trek inland for wine tasting, Old Cayucos Tavern is a place to visit. It is a SUPER DIVE BAR, but is plenty of fun. Live music On the weekends), shuffleboard, and an eclectic gathering of people all in the name of having a good time. For those who like to play a game of cards, accidentally venture your way to the back and ask nice. As noted before, CASH ONLY.
Review Source:The Old Cayucos Saloon provides as a great little water Hole  for a drink or ten while your waiting for a dinner reservation or a night cap post food coma.
Good ol' fashioned, saloon. Small selection of beers on tap, including a couple of local brews.
Happy Hour Specials during the week.
While this place says they have live music, I have not ever seen a band play here. Nevertheless, they do occasionally have Live Music.
Good bar service. CASH ONLY.
I went back to this place a month ago after 10 years, wow, it has the same exact look from back then.
It's a nice, picturesque, old, dive bar, where you can see some of the locals mingling. I got their margaritas and even though they looked very simple, they were very tasty. I also got a nice tshirt as a souvenir. Exact same design as 10 years ago.
Cayucos is a beautiful town and I believe this is the only bar in town.
I would definitively go back to Cayucos, and of course go back to this bar for the good memories I have from it.
Thank you Cayucos, thank you Old Cayucos Tavern & Card Room!
My cousins and I went here for a Drink after a rehersal dinner, the price of the margarita I wanted was 13.00 bucks which surprised me, I love the decoration of this old place it makes me feel like I'm in a historical building that's been preserved since the 1800's (which is a good thing). The only cons were once the live band started playing really hard rock that's kind of when I knew to start finishing up my drink to leave. I was also really surprised at how loud and open the Bartender was about sharing her "boyfriend problems" with the rest of the Barflys. Overall, from being out of town and coming to this place for a nice drink with my cousins, I'd definitely come back for another round.
Review Source:Th "original-olde-Bar" in Cayucos that has not changed in decades provides a step back in time as you walk through the door. Locals and Tourist mix over drinks and tall stories. Â It's the only live music in Cayucos at night so Party-On!
Debauchery and Drinking in front, Poker in the rear....Fun everywhere.
It was my first time in Cayucos. Once I stepped my foot in the door I was having a blast! There are sooooo many things to do! They even put out free coffee for late nighters. I played shuffle borad with friendly locals, while my bf was enjoying a lucky hand in poker. Live music was awesome and there is an unlimited room to lounge. Ladies bathroom deserves a little re-modeling but other than that this place is fantabulous!
Definitely will swing by next time I visit Central Coast!
This is probably the best saloon i've been in because absolutely nothing has changed. It's definitely a hoot (especially with good company). Play shuffle board in the back, play some cards, or just drink with some friends. Then head on over to the beach a few yards away for some shenanigans.
When a place is so old (in American history standards) they have an approximate date when it was built, it's good enough for me.
This place is not gay friendly. Â My partner and I walked in for an early evening cocktail and there were 5 people in the bar. Â Two gentleman were discussing whether it was their lucky day or not and the one said, "I think you're barking up the wrong tree" (and indeed they were). Â The bartender took a minute to decide whether he was going to serve us. Â It was unbelievable. Â One of the men at the bar actually went down the bar and talked in other men's ears about his perceptions of us. Â They would turn and look at us and yell across the bar whether they agreed with his assessment that we were in fact lesbians. Â You figure a place with a motto like "liquor in the front, poker in the rear" with murals of naked cowgirls on the wall would actually contain some cool, if not interesting characters but these folks were barely tolerant of our presence. Â Â Hey Family - Spend your money elsewhere.
Review Source:Wow. Â Words can't truly describe a Cayucos Tavern experience... Stayed in Cayucos for a night for a wedding and of course the party ended up at the Tav (seeing as how every other establishment in Cayucos closes at 5pm.)
Debauchery, dancing, way too much drinking... oh and a little unwanted groping by every 40+ creepy old guy in the room. Â My husband has never been so on edge! Â Oh well. Â Fun night all in all.
If you're looking for a crazy time - one where you'll wake up in the morning and ask yourself, was that place for REAL?! - Cayucos Tav is your place. Â
Oh - but watch out for the bouncer. Â I was walking out carrying my water cup with just ice in it, and he slammed his arm to my chest, blocking me at the door, and grabbed my wrist to see what was in the cup. Â It was clearly a water cup, all their cocktails are served in other glasses... it was pretty rude. Â He had to do his job, I get that, but he could have, maybe... ASKED me? Â A little rude and a little violent for my taste.
"Liquor in the front, Poker in the rear"
You have to stop here for their slogan alone... This is a bad ass Saloon!
They have an edge on almost every other dive bar in the country, because of the grandfather clause'ed poker room in the back of the bar. Â That's right they have a legal card room!
This place was has been here since the late 1870's when Captan James Cass built the pier and set up the trading route.
Also worth mentioning - They have multiple pool tables, a regulation shuffle board table, darts, and local music on the weekends.
I love this bar, and wish I still lived near by... Don't worry Tavy' - I'll be back, and so should you!
I grew up in this town and when I go "home" to visit friends and family I go to the Tavern. I am one of those locals you will find there and I know all the bartenders and the owner.
The Tavern is pretty much the only bar in town besides Schooner's (which closes at about 11pm) so you don't really have an option. Great old west feel and a great juke box you can download whatever you want on. Plus they have live bands Friday and Saturday nights and poker games in the back.
They don't take credit cards but there is an atm at the local bank across the street. Make sure you tip your bartender!!!
Oh no no no no. . .Cayucos is an okay town in the daytime. I won several oyster eating contests there back when oyster BIll Williams was alive, God rest his soul.
But Cayucos at night?? Please. I've poked my head in here at times after dark and the uppity trashy locals all dart the hairy eyeball at you. Not a fun place unless you're uppity and trashy, too. Go on in, you'll blend.
Definitely a place out of a movie or something. I love the fact that its been a saloon for 100 years! I can see how some of the locals may give you the stink-eye if you don't quite fit in, but who cares. We were obviously visitors and stood out a bit but didn't have any problems and had a great time actually. There was an Americana/Rockabillyish guy/band playing and singing when we were there on Sept, 11th of this year. It was great fun just soaking up the sights and sounds. Will definitely go back next time I'm in town.
Review Source:I used to pop my head in here all the time, as I grew up in the area. Â The old Tavern always seemed so taboo. Â This place has definitely been lost in time, but it still retains some of it's old charm (or is it the lack of charm that's appealing? Â I really can't decide). Â
Last time I was in here I met up with a couple of cousins who were looking for the "nightlife" of the town I was raised in. Â Well, in a town of 2500 people everything closes by 5, so it's not really like you have many options... Â They were shocked to see an old-timer light up a cigarette at the bar, while I was only amused by their disbelief. Â Cayucos tends to live by its own rules. Â Some things never change.
There's some great stories about the bar you'll here some of the locals tell if you stick around long enough. Â Apart from its history, though, the bar itself is fairly standard, but deliciously scandalous for such a small town: poker through the back, bras and panties hanging above the bar, and a far-too-big selection of whiskey. Â I love it! Â If you're driving through Cayucos you MUST stop here.
"Liquor in the front, Poker in the Back..."
If you want to see what a REAL "wild wild west" bar looks like, then this place is for you. Â And how many bars and taverns can claim they were built in the 1800s? Â Half the time, I turn around and expect to see a rumrunner, smuggler, or cowboy walk in. Â You can even hitch the horse up outside at the water trough...
Skiball, cheap pints, and old-school Western naked lady bar-hoe murals. Â Wondering where half the town's population is around...8 pm? Â Just check the Cayucos Tavern!!! Â
To quote the August 2009 edition of National Geographic Traveler Magazine... Don't change Cayucos.
God from my baby years to my years waiting for the bus in front of the old cayucos tavern to my years helping my moms bf set up his band to coming as an Adult to many memories have been played out inside the old Cayucos Tavern.
Classic hole in the wall Gem filled with the old timer and the new comer of old and new. Def a hang out for the local crowd, I have not lived here for a bit but never fail to run into some fellow kids from the younger years and through HS.
Never a dull moment at the Tav. Â Liquor in the front, Poker in the rear it says it all.
This place is freaking awesome!!!! Sucks that they didn't take credit cards, I rarely carry cash on me. But this is a classic bar, totally old school. Bras & Panties on the chandelier, half naked girls on the wall, poker in the back, locals hanging out and drinking. It's fun. The town is very small and shuts down early but this place stays open late. I went there on a spur of the moment type deal. I stayed for a drink here in the afternoon and it was cool. I haven't been at night but I will next time I plan on a quick little getaway.
Review Source:i cant believe nary a soul has written of this fine institution.
good strong drinks, johnny cash on the juke and semi-nude painting son the wall. Â its up there with Grady's lighthouse (RIP), McCarthy's
and many others....plus the card room (not my cup of tea)...and  don't forget their slogan..."liquor in the front and poker in the back!"
