You come here to have a conversation. Â That's the overwhelming feeling I had after coming here. Â As soon as we walked in, we were being invited to sit at the bar with everyone and join in their conversation. Â John was tending and his service was prompt-no waiting with an empty glass. Â Even though we are not locals, it felt great to actually sit and talk with people, and get to know them. Â This bar encourages this. Â Will definitely come back.
Review Source:The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is because this place is too small! It gets packed on Saturdays when there is live music, and it's a nice mix of friendly locals and visitors. Chad is a very welcoming host, as is his wife, and it's one reason why people come back time and time again. It's cozy and comfortable, and a nice place to try west coast micro brewed beers of all types. Cayucos needed this place as an alternative to the Saloon across the street, which is big and raucous (which is not necessarily a bad thing!).
Review Source:I'm back and reviewing yet another entry in the "I want to be the 'Cheers' of Cayucos" contest.
This establishment is not allowed to serve food because it would make it a direct competitor with Skipper's next door. Â But it does a great job in offering a wide selection of local and California / west coast micro/nano brews. Everything from the champagne of beers the Stout/Porter to Barley wine. The beers are generally hand crafted. They are excellent but do not compare in flavor to 'local to every town' German biers and perhaps even some mass production types such as Pilsner Urquell, the original Pilsner lager. Â really couldn't believe how good MacDonald's beer was in Germany. Better than many of the microbrews offered at Old Creek and Cambria Ale House. However, the barley wine served is really pretty primo and at 10.6 one can readily see why. The greater in alcohol content the beer the better the flavor. Â That's always a good rule of thumb. I'm fairly certain that is what I will order on a consistent basis.
Many German beers generally provide a great deal of vitamin/mineral content. In other words they are like drinking an organic superfood smoothie. I'm not sure that is the case with the local micro/nano brews. Â But I could be wrong.
The perfect scenario would be to see Skippers and this business merge into one and allow burgers et al and beer. It might take a huge bite out of Schooner's business. Meanwhile, their custom of providing locals with their own personal glass mug or stein hanging behind the bar, I think,. might make them a winner over the long-in-the-tooth Tavern. I need to get a mug in there .. :)
I also tried one of the wine offerings. A Pinot Gris from Ventana. Their wine offerings are poor. You don't have to carry a lot of wine but like the Germans you can carry some and believe me the Gruner Vetliner's from Bavaria and Austria are killer, crisp, dry whites that compete with any wine from anywhere. This is what this establishment probably should carry in my opinion. And not a local Gruner Vetliner. The local renditions are pretty horrible.
