Worst service I have ever encountered. Lazy, incompetent, rude waitresses. I have never walked out of a restaurant and I left before I ordered food. My friend tried to order drinks but was told to wait to do so. We waited for the 3 waitresses chatting directly in front of us to acknowledge our existence and then left. The restaurant only had 2 other tables when we were there...guess there's a reason for that.
Review Source:I've been here several times in the last year. Good ol' American food. Burgers, turkey dinner, chicken strip, salad, hamburger steak. They offer a full bar, daily meal specials, and a buffet breakfast on the weekends. Staff is friendly. The restaurant is divided into two rooms. One is setup with 7 or 8 flat-screen tvs for football games, Nascar, etc. The second room is a dining area where they have Karaoke, live bands, and other entertainment on Friday and Saturday nights. I understand that Old Salem also offers poker tournaments during the week. They have recently started delivery also. A great place!
Review Source:I had to drive from Warrenton to Middletown, Va on business today,
The return trip had me in the area for a late lunch.
On the recommendation of my co-worker, Karl with a K, I decided to give this place a try.
I had the Club, made with ham, turkey and bacon on toasted whole wheat It was really good. You don't get any sides but it comes with chips.
I called ahead and ordered it 'to go' ; it was ready in 10 minutes.
The place has a sports bar vibe & clearly Redskin friendly.
Might be a good place to watch NASCAR as well.
Easy access right off I-66 so it might be a good place to stop for something other than fastfood.
We came here after a civil war reenactment. Â I am giving this place a five since the waitress there went above and beyond the call of duty. Â She is a rockstar. Â My friend just had mouth surgery and couldn't eat anything the waitress was able to get her some broth. Â The food was delicious and very small town feel. Â Best service!
Review Source:We stopped here on our drive back to NC when we needed lunch and didn't want fast food. Â It's a nice low priced menu with appetizers, salads, soups, sandwiches, burgers and desserts, so plenty to choose from. Â The reviews are a little mixed, but we thought we'd give it a try anyway.
I ordered the tuna melt, which was supposed to come with chips & pickles and my dining partner ordered the BLT. Â We also ordered a side of slaw and onion rings to share. Â When our orders arrived there were no chips, so we asked if the sandwiches weren't supposed to come with them and a different waitress than the one who took our order said she'd bring the chips, which she did. Â I didn't think we were being picky to ask for what was supposed to come with the sandwiches, even though we'd ordered additional sides. Â
Anyway, my tuna melt sandwich was just tuna on toasted bread, no melt as I had ordered, but I figured we didn't have time for a redo so I'd just eat it as is. Â It was good, but I really wanted that tuna melt! Â I was told that the bacon on the BLT was quite good.
The patrons seemed to be mainly locals that the staff knew and talked with frequently. Â Clearly we weren't regulars, so it felt like we really didn't get much attention from the staff once our food was brought. Â That did not feel good, to say the least, and kept me from giving them 3 stars instead of just two.
I've eaten at the Old Salem Restaurant twice, both times were for lunch. Both times I just couldn't stomach the idea of I-66 fast food. Thankfully in Marshall there are a few choices.
The menu carries pretty standard fare for small town Americana diner food, burgers, spaghetti, open face sandwiches, BLT's, etc. The food while not anything to crave certainly beats the hell out of any fast food you'll find. I had the burger and on my last stop the meatloaf. The meatloaf while a little on the dense side was tasty and came with a more than ample portion, it's recommended. The mashed potatoes it came with were real potatoes, not freeze dried funk. The gravy was good, but need a little something, all in all a pretty good meal.
Serve was fast and friendly. Prices ok. One thing of note, Old Salem has 5 or 6 flat screens and a full bar making it a cool place to catch to watch the Redskins and curse Dan $nyder for ruining our once proud franchise.
Old Salem is a good choice if in the area and want to pass on the fast food.
I've done the breakfast buffet twice now. Â Yesterday the sausage links were overcooked and shriveled down. Â The bacon was a mass of overcooked pork all stuck together. Â I do prefer crispy bacon VS undercooked limp bacon but this was rediculous. Â I like scrambled eggs but not with cheese and it looked like there was cheese in all of the eggs. Â The biscuits and sausage gravy were pretty good so this is mainly what I ate. Â I likely won't be back.
Review Source:I went to the Old Salem Restaurant once for breakfast. Â I was a little disappointed that I was too early (about 7:30 am) for the breakfast buffet. Â Instead, I opted for my standard diner breakfast: ham and cheese omelet, with home fries, wheat toast and coffee.
The omelet was made with three eggs, although it looked a bit small. Â The ham was pretty good -- cut into pieces, not the processed-looking dice. Â They fried it slightly before adding to the omelet (as evidenced by browning around the edges). Â Unfortunately, the cheese options didn't include cheddar, so I went with American. Â (Cheese options included American, Swiss, and provolone -- in my opinion, none of which are very desirable for omelets.) Â The home fries had nice texture, were browned OK, but lacked flavor. Â The toast was made from ordinary grocery store wheat bread. Â The coffee was your basic diner variety (which I appreciate).
Overall, a rather basic, if somewhat disappointing, diner breakfast.
Stopped in here on a whim today at lunch time - lured by the sign that they have an all-you-can eat breakfast buffet - the question was - it was about 12:15 pm - would they still be serving breakfast?
I had missed breakfast - so I was good and hungry and in the mood for traditional American breakfast foods. And yes! The buffet was still running. Â There was a good crowd of folks dining here.
I visited the buffet twice. The first time I snagged a couple of sausage links, bacon, scrambled eggs, breakfast potatoes, and biscuits with sausage gravy, plus I request a cup of coffee and a glass of water, and and ketchup and hot sauce.
Everything was very tasty - with the exception of the potatoes - I thought they were a bit bland and good have been cooked a bit longer. I added salt, ketchup, and hot sauce to them to kick them up a bit.
The second visit, I got two pancakes, a bit of the cheese omelot concoction, another biscuit with sausage gravy, and more bacon.
Ed - my server was a nice, personable guy and did not have to work to hard for me since I was doing the buffet. He brought the creamer for my coffee, as well as  my beverages and the ketchup and hot sauce.
Total bill was under $10.00. I tipped him $2.00.
Definitely would come here again!
