Great for live music and a cold beer, bring your own koozy or buy one there. Had the turkey and swiss on rye with chips and a pickle. Great lunch or snack while enjoying the good weather and good music. Sausage on a roll was pretty good too. Impressed with the beer selection. Bring your dog (on a leash) to hang out.
Review Source:Don't get me wrong I LOVE Gruene hall. Â But when the heat combined with the lack of air flow gets to you, or you tire of the minimal beer and wine selections or you just want a bite to eat walk a few doors down to OGSG.
I found OGSG by a sign on the road that read "Live music, wine and beer". I walked around back of the building to find a small beautiful garden with a water fountain. Beyond the greenery was an open area patio, picnic tables and a stage. Large shade trees provide patrons some relief from the scorching Texas sun.
I only had drinks and listened to the music so I cannot vouch for the food. Â The beer selection had several Texas beers to include Real Ale and Rahr & Sons. The wine selection was fare and I had both a Sauvignon blanc and a malbec but know it will be served in a plastic cup. They chill their reds which is a must for an outdoor venue (the temperature will ruin the wine quickly otherwise). The atmosphere is relaxed and everyone seemed to enjoy the breeze, cold beverages and the band.
The food menu consists of sandwiches, appetizers and German food (bratwurst plate, kraut dog and a kids hot dog meal). They also sell blue bell ice cream and shaved ice.
The first Sunday of each month a band with Louisiana roots plays called Slim Bawb. I wouldn't travel far to see them but they put on a good show and were goofy enough to pose with customers wearing lucha libre masks. Notably Slim Bawb plays bass with his feet, righty and stinky (and righty is his left foot).
You can also get married at OGSG with wedding prices starting at $200. They accept credit cards with a minimum purchase of $10.
Freaking LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this place. Like, love it so much I got married there. You HAVE to try the German nachos. MMMMMMMM. The atmosphere is laid back. There is great FREE music and more than one show on most days. The staff is friendly, crazy hard working and fun. Completely family (and animal) friendly. I wish I lived closer but gladly drive the 90 minutes at least 2X a month to get my fix!! Don't miss this place it's the BEST!!
Review Source:We live in Gruene and didn't know about this venue until it appeared on Groupon. Â We thought the food was excellent, chicken salad sandwich and a reuben. Â Extremely pleasant and laid back atmosphere, live band playing. Â I've seen some comments about the price, sandwiches around $7 with chips, live band and serene environment, how is that expensive, very reasonable. Â I highly recommend this place, you'll come out relaxed and glad you came, we did and are going back again today.
Review Source:Eh - only so-so. I had the bratwurst plate - came with a brat and a kaiser roll, with sauerkraut and hot German potato salad. Â
The brat was good and so was the sauerkraut. Â The German potato salad that came with it was terrible though - it tasted exactly like the sauerkraut - no difference at all. Â There were only about 6 different items offered on the menu - most of them seemed to be sandwiches.
The brat plate was $7.95 and an Alien Ale (draft) was $4.00.
I'll be back, but only for the free live music - NOT the food - it was really over priced.
This is a great option if Gruene Hall is packed or just looking for something more intimate. This all outdoor environment is near the Gruene River Grill. Â The staff was very friendly and the food smelled good. Â
We didn't eat there but the menu had standard German food items like Bratwurst and such.
Nice stopover during a long (not to mention hot) day of walking. Â Employees are exceptionally nice, knowledgeable and helpful. Â A few different types of seats as well as different seating arrangements in the garden. Â Quiet and peaceful even when only a few people are around. Â I found the garden and the surrounding area a great spot for picture taking as well.
Review Source:Oma Gruene's Secret Garten is a simple place hidden behind a store-front, wedged in between a bed and breakfast (Gruene Mansion) and a local favorite restaurant (Gruene River Grill). The patio garden serves as a seating area where you can consume some excellent sandwiches, sausages and of course, beer!
The beer selection is a boon to anyone looking for some authentic German brews, as well as some great micro-brews. They have Warsteiner Dunkel on tap! If you're going to drink the Dunkel, you should relish the Reuben as well.
The staff is so friendly that I felt like they were my friends after just one visit. I kept coming back during my three-day stay in the area and I was never disappointed with the food and service.
If you like good beer and good company in a relaxed garden atmosphere, visit the sleepy old west town of Gruene and stop by Oma's Secret Garden.
