Sometimes a restaurant balances out in the three-star category, even when it could easily go in either direction. Â I've driven by here many times in the years I lived in CT, but I never gave it a try.
It's a beautiful space, well thought out, and an inviting bar area. Â The service was attentive and friendly, but the size and scope of the menu threw me a bit. Â They want to be a raw bar and seafood restaurant, but there's quite a bit of land and vegetarian options along with tons of fried food. Â There's also some Asian fare thrown in for good measure. Â
I found the littleneck clams to be fresh but overpriced and a little disappointing. Â The firecracker calamari are decent, but enough to feed a table of four and there's no fire in the sauce. Â It's basically General Tso's Calamari with no spice. Â The lobster bisque was excellent with good sized chunks of lobster. Â They also have a nice variety of craft beers to go along with your meal (really enjoyed the Kona Brown). Â
There's nothing horribly wrong with Otter Cove, nor is there anything that really got me excited. Â Also, they completely botched the order of the food I ordered. Â Calamari, raw clams, then soup?
Used to go here all of the time but something has changed for the worse. Thought that we would give lunch a chance after a really bad dinner. The dinner was a beef failure - poor quality cut and over cooked. No remorse or apologies just a check and out the door. The lunch today was terrible. First the order was entered and delivered incorrectly (same as the person at the next table who sent theirs back) second the order was corrected with what seemed like day old food (or worse food from a sent back meal). After paying the check, the waiter (obviously new to the trade) said to us that we should have sent it back immediately even though we were not asking for anything to be done - just bad service recovery by an inexperienced staff person. Which may be the crux of the problem - there were no senior staff members on site and the two servers visibly "working" were spending more time somewhere else and not paying attention to the customers - empty glasses and botched orders. Really a shame for a nice place to go so far down the drain.
