You have to love diners. Â They are old fashioned with real ingredients and seem to really care about the customer
I was starving on my way to The Hudson Valley and was lured by the decent Yelp reviews. Â I ordered the marinated chicken sandwich and my companion had the BLT
The food was decent, but a tad pricey....The service, however, was excellent. Â The waitress could not have been more kind and accommodating..not just to us, but to everyone on the phone and the takeout.
Both of us later remarked, that she amazingly actually made our day...unbelievable as it sounds...
My dad and I had a great breakfast here. My dad tried the grilled salmon oscar special with asparagus, eggs, home fries, and toast. It was delicious. I had to of course try the cinnabun pancakes. They were a childhood dream. Although a little pricey at  $7, completely worth it. I mean really, where else are you going to find pancakes like these? The pancakes are a regular pancake swirled with sugar cinnamon goodness and topped with a cream cheese icing AND it comes with three of them!
Although I can't speak to the other food here, the breakfast we enjoyed was solid. Definitely not fancy and the inside could use some touching up but you'll be getting some quality breakfast if you venture here.
As someone who's been here several times, I'm surprised that it has 4 stars. Yes, I know it's a 30 year old "staple" but the food is unremarkable, greasy-spoon (I'm looking at you, pizza), and without real uniqueness. If you want good pizza or just a pit stop on 84, just go to Willington Pizza Too off Exit 69 (5 minutes away). I guess if you just want something quick and cheap (e.g. You're taking a break from Electric Blue strip club right under Papa T's), this is your place, but this doesn't make the list of places to spend a night out for dinner, even casually.
Review Source:This place is a Northeastern, CT staple. Â Small place with a roadside diner feel. Â It is a small town restaurant, that isn't trying to do anything more than be a small town restaurant. Â Great food, great people, for a reasonable price. Â What else can you ask for?... Love this place...and I know a lot of others that do too. Â Congrats on 30 years Papa T's
Review Source:Northeastern Connecticut... not exactly a bastion of quality pizza makers. But make no mistake, Papa T, located right off of 84, makes a mean slice, on par with anything you'd get in New York metro.
It's definitely a New York style slice - relatively thin but not paper thin, plenty of cheese and sauce, no burnt parts (not that there's anything wrong with burnt parts, file that under New Haven Style). It's a good pie, reminds me of the pies of my childhood in the North Bronx.
The restaurant itself is old and run down, so I wouldn't take a wedding reception here. But I usually go here for takeout anyway. And you should too, because as far as I'm concerned, the closer you get to Boston, the greater the pizza dangers are.
Whoops, thought I had updated this already!
Still great roast beef sandwiches, and the "negative" I mentioned in my previous review hasn't been a problem again, so here's the extra star as promised. Â
I still haven't tried the pizza, but with the amount of meat that comes on the roast beef sandwich, I can't justify it. Â It's been a long time since I could find a place that piled it on like that. Â Why go to Subway next door when, for a buck or two more, you can get a real sandwich right here?
Love this place...highlight of the drive between New York and Boston. Pizza by the slice...how can you go wrong? The staff are very friendly, the diner decor is great and the food hits the spot. Have to have a milkshake. Plus, the place-mats have fun word-scrambles and puzzles! And there's a gum ball machine!
Review Source:I should not have been surprised to find Papa T's on YELP, but checked after a fun and yummy lunch to give them a boost!  Driving south from Boston to Baltimore, we stopped for a bathroom and a quick bite.  But when we walked into Papa T's and sat at the counter, all thought of eating on the run disappeared.  We looked around and everything we saw being delivered to tables looked delicious, but the burgers called to us.  Medium rare and piled high with the extra fresh lettuce I usually ask for and never get.  Plus the best half-sour pickle and old timey French fries that are crunchy on the outside.  Looking down the counter to the white-haired lady spooning soup and looking comfy though all alone, or  over to the booths with dads and sons was a real treat, too.  Friendly banter and spotlessly clean.  What more could you ask for ... now back on the road.  But we're all relaxed and thinking that any future trips will include Papa T's, too.
Review Source:My boyfriend and I went out with a mission--to find something that wasn't american/italian.
the problem was, we went out at 9:30 on a Thursday. Â So we wound up at the only place we found that was open--Papa T's. Â Whoops.
We enjoyed our meal, though. And the waitress was very nice and friendly and extremely helpful (she was a vegetarian like me, so she was able to point things out that I wouldn't have thought to ask--such as, they use meat sauce unless asked not to).
I got the eggplant sandwich and my boyfriend got a fish sandwich. Â Both our meals were good.
I want to go back soon to try the portabella sandwich. Â :)
Their placemats have a word find on them. Â I recommend racing your dinner mate. Â (I lost, but only by one word. Â It was a very close game.)
Though this establishment received positive review, my experience was far from that. My fiancee and I went after church for lunch and were hardly impressed. The service was very brusque with the waitress asking for our order in a curt manner. The food was sub par even for a provincial eatery, We were not asked once during the course of our meal if the food was good or if we needed additional beverages. The worst aspect of our experience was the waitress interrupting our meal to ask if we needed boxes to go and leaving the check when it was clear we were far from done with our meal or anywhere near that point. Whole establishments should not be written off just from one experience, but sadly Papa T's has lost two patrons for good.
Review Source:One of my favorite Pizza/Italian places to eat at in Connecticut. They have great grinders and da best pizza. My man loves the breakfast and their french onion soup. My fav. item on the menu that I crave is there mild boneless buffalo wings. I've never had anything like it- its sweet and tangy but not as sweet as bbq sauce. Try if for yourself. Comes with the best chunky blue cheese dressing.
Also, you can be ammused occasionaly with strippers that come up for some grub from the strip club down in back of the restaurant.
Can't wait to go back tonight for dinner!
For a road-side family-style diner, this place ROCKS! Â
The food is all really solid, we stopped for Sunday dinner off I-84, and went with the all-you-can eat pasta, garlic bread and salad. Â Everything was very good -- garlic bread was amazing, the bread was light and flakey and crunchy. Â I imagine their grinders are served on this amazing bread.
What sets this place aside from other diners is
1) the staff was really cheerful and attentive without being too chatty or overbearing.
2) the place is clean -- you could eat off the floors of the bathrooms, if that's your thing
3) attention to detail. Â I know it's minor, but every table had fresh flowers -- just a little pink carnation, but it's nice. Â It tells me they care. Â
I do the drive from Nashua to NJ quite frequently, and I'll definitely be stopping at Papa T's again!
I eat here with my boys 1-2 times a month. Â They have a fairly predictable menu but pretty much everything i have had is a notch above typical, and the chef often adds interesting specials that show some creativity and interest beyond your basic grinders and sandwiches. Â Typically they have very good soups, and they are not straight from a can. Â Salads are tolerable. Â Nice desserts. Â My son loves to watch the pizza guy toss the dough. They serve draft beer. What more could a guy want?
Review Source:I'm not really into diner food, but this place have overcome my problem. Â This place have a family feel to it. Â The food is extremely yummy. Â You must try their boneless chicken wings. Â Their sandwiches are pretty good. Â They serve their sandwiches with chips and rarely with fries unless requested. Â Breakfast is also yummy. Â I would definitely go here again for a quick and satisfying bite.
Review Source:Papa T's is basically Tolland's local "greasy spoon." Â You can go in, sit at the counter, get a cup of coffee and a slice of pizza or a sandwich, and -- if you're a local -- probably run into a half-dozen people you know. Â The only reason it doesn't fall completely into the 'local hangout' category is its proximity to Interstate 84 (it's about a hundred yards from the highway).
The food is mostly standard Italian-American homestyle diner fare: pizza, spaghetti, grinders, etc. Â The pizza is sort of a medium-thickness tossed-crust pie, different from the typical "New England" style pan. Â The slices are big -- I think they cut into 1/6ths -- and fair warning: it's pretty greasy. Â (Good food for a Sunday morning if you happen to put down too many on Saturday night.)
If you're driving through on 84 and are looking for a place to stop that's not fast food but will still let you get on and off in a hurry, Papa T's is worth a try.
On family trips up to New Hampshire, Papa T's is *always* the midway lunch-and-pee pit stop. Nestled in a mini strip-mall (Exit 68 off I-84) in Tolland, it's the perfect place to have a quiet lunch. The waiter service is lovely, the prices are great, and the food is yummy. My "regular" there is the BLT, which to this day other New England diners have yet to match in quality.
The decor is clean, yet slightly artsy; there are mini paintings spaced nicely around on the walls, and pretty empty wine bottles on display with flowers on shelves to give a bit of a vintage look. In the back by the bathrooms there are old-fashioned signs hung up - like old Pepsi or chicken ads. Cute touch.
And don't forget to check out their placemats for word games. Being a puzzle-whore, I actually took a placemat home with me once, because I was so engrossed in a wordfind and didn't want to leave it behind. But that's just me. :)
My only two gripes about the place are 1) they serve syrupy RC Cola instead of Coke, and 2) that they can't seem to serve normal pickles. I mean sure, the pickles come with the meal as a side dish (along with potato chips), so you don't HAVE to touch them...but it seems that a frightening number of diners across the country can't seem to serve tasty and crunchy pickles - even though they're all from jars anyway. They usually taste like sad, limp pieces of squish, marinated in cat pee instead of proper brine. Ick. So feel free to take a test bite if you're brave (hey, it MIGHT be a good batch), but I think you'll generally want to leave your pickle slice mostly untouched.
Anyway. Other than those minor gripes, Papa T's is definitely a worthwhile pit stop on a long trip (or lunch spot if you live nearby).
