Nothing Spectacular, or even good.  My girlfriend's sandwich had a hair, my French toast was dry and you cannot substitute for the hash or potatoes, you get them or you don't.  So much for healthy eating.  Bacon was greasy and wicked salty.  The décor is old and dirty and the bathrooms smell.  Oh....the menus are sticky too.  Can you say Restaurant: Impossible?  The kicker, CASH ONLY.  You are a restaurant in a tourist area and you're cash only?  Anyways.....one star (if that) and I will not be returning.
Review Source:Best breakfast for 20 miles... nothing trendy, no frills, just a great breakfast! I come here from time to time... maybe 5 - 6 times a year. Even though they have a lunch menu, I have only been here for breakfast. There's something about a "breakfast all day" place. Food is always good and the staff is always helpful and fun. I sit at the counter so I can read the paper and give a hard time to the staff. They play right along and give it right back. They have a good local crowd as well as visitors from all over. Great job!
Review Source:There are so many good breakfast places around, why would you come here to eat?
This place is awful. I really believe I can make a better breakfast at home then anything they have on the menu. It has been a while since I've been here but bad experiences stick in your mind. I remember people at the next table complaining about how bad the omelets were and I believe them.
This is your typical home town breakfast place that looks like it's been here forever. As a matter of fact I remember eating in this spot in 1971 (although the name may have changed). It's one of four  breakfast spots in the tiny village of North Woodstock and it holds up well to the competition. Service is mixed, depending on the season. During fringe season, I found a relaxed mix of locals and vacationers (couldn't really tell one from the other. ), and service was friendly.  However, during peak season, when the place is packed for breakfast, and I found service inattentive and chaotic.
Review Source:Before I begin this review, let me first say that I'm no spring chicken when it comes to the North Woodstock or White Mountain area. I've even been a resident of New Hampshire for a handful of years, frequently visiting the White Mountain tourist hotspot Peg's sits nestled within. I've been to various eateries and inns, motels, cabins, and hotels there in the north since I've been eight years old.
Over the years, I've come back to Peg's now and then, and over the course of my lifetime relationship with the area I've had mixed feelings about the establishment. I ate there this past Friday on my trip to see the foliage, and I can say without a doubt that this is the last time I'll be visiting Peg's. Considering my history with the region, this struck me as no small statement.
There is only so much I'm willing to tolerate in a "restaurant," and this place pushed the envelope in spades before things entered the twilight zone. The food is lackluster, to say the least. The service is typical more of a diner--not a restaurant. The environment itself is crowded, lackluster, and a little dumpy feeling, but all of these things are tolerable to a certain degree, considering the outside appearance of the place; it does not scream "classy dining" like, say, the Woodstock Inn does. Fair enough. You know what to expect before you walk in there: you're expecting a low-key, casual diner-like experience, with friendly waitresses and good, home-grown food which makes up for the cheesy napkin dispensers and creaky floors.
What we got, however, was no ambiance, so-so service and pretty bad food. The mashed potatoes were dry, as if they were boiled, broken up and served without adding cream, milk, and/or garlic or seasoning. The chips in another lunch dish were stale, like they were left out a little too long in a large bowl and collected moisture. The meat in another dish was too dry.
We commented on the bad food and asked to have one of the side dishes taken off our bill. The waitress returned after apparently having reported our findings to the chef (who proceeded to glare at as from the little window in the kitchen door) and went on to explain that the chips were fine (we just probably didn't like them), and that the food was cooked blandly, to keep it "neutral" for customers. The explanation, while odd, was one thing. The chef boring holes into our backs from behind the kitchen door with his eyes was quite another. While we were up at the front desk paying our bill, he continued to play this game, until I returned, in kind. A few people in the restaurant noticed this too, though the head waitress (manager?) seemed oblivious not only to this, but our heartfelt suggestions toward improving the customer experience there.
Currently on Yelp, this establishment has earned three our of five stars. How is this possible? Are these people rating the same place? I find it hard to believe so. The experience I had was unprofessional from a few different standpoints, and the creepy, staring chef from that little window in the door turned a bad lunch into a very odd one.
Put simply, don't go here. Try the Woodstock Inn, The Common Man or the Indian Head resort, instead. These other establishments show effort in their food creations, unlike this place, which seems to simply be taking advantage of a good location with plenty of unwary travelers. Let this be your warning.
We asked the guy at the front desk where we were staying for a recommendation for breakfast and he said this place was a great choice. Â What the hell did we do to him to send us here, I have no idea. Â
The main eating area feels like a packed living room. Â So we sat down outside where they have these wet gross little rubber mats that are usually used to line drawers. Â
Wet place mats aside, I was outraged with how expensive the food is. Â While sitting and deciding what we'll have I had the brain to look it up on Yelp and thanks to some helpful advice found out it's cash only. Â We only had like ten bucks in cash so I told the waitress unfortunately we would have to leave because we didn't have enough cash. Â Three coffees cost us $8 (I think she automatically tacked on a tip). Â
We went down the road to a McDonald's and had a filling breakfast for a fifth of the sum we would have paid here. Â That's my recommendation.
I remember this place being amazing a couple years ago and I was quite disappointed during this visit. The omelet was a scrambled egg with ingredients sprinkled on top. Home fries were bland and soggy. One cup of coffee hot while another was lukewarm. I am happy to say that the bathroom was clean as others have said otherwise during their visits. Overall bad experience and will not be back!
Review Source:It's pretty difficult to screw up breakfast. Â I got the ham and cheese omelet and my boyfriend got the veggie omelet. Â Both came with hash and toast. Â We both enjoyed our meals. Â There was nothing spectacular about our meals, but all we wanted were simple omelets, and that's what we got. Â Service was pretty good, but the place itself seems a bit disorganized. Â The atmostphere is very "old personish". Â I gave it 3 stars because it's just average.
Review Source:Peg's is another of those restaurants that due to their tourist location make absolutely no effort to stand out or excel. Â I have eaten breakfast here a few times; but, after my last mediocre experience decided not to return. Â The problem is that they put essentially no creativity into their menu. Â The homefries in particular are an annoying collection of round, thick potato slices that have been deep fried and then plopped slop a top on the plate. Â The eggs and pancakes are simply ordinary. Â Their prices far exceed the quality or creativity of their food. Â If you want a decent breakfast look for the Sunny Day Diner (it's located across from Clark's Trading post). Â There you will find a fairly good breakfast in a cool diner setting. Â If you are searching for quality avoid Peg's.
Review Source:On a recent trip to Lincoln/Woodstock we chose Peg's because we wanted a nice, low-key, local breakfast. Â It's a cute little restaurant off the main strip and the staff are friendly (one kid called me "darlin'"). Â The food came quickly and our coffee was always full. Â My boyfriend had pancakes which he said were good. Â He asked for the home fries to be extra crispy and they came deep fried...sort of like round fries. Â He said he was OK with that! My breakfast though, was so good. Â I ordered a simple egg and cheese omelet with cornbeef hash and toast. Â Let me tell you-the hash was AWESOME. Â Just salty enough and not greasy. Â It was grilled to crispy perfection and it just melted in my mouth. Â Seriously, it's the best has I've had in a long, long time. Â It was so good, in fact, that I went back the next day by myself to have breakfast again-only so I could get that hash!
The only downsides to the place are that they don't take credit cards (but their prices are VERY cheap) and that they only offer white or wheat toast. Â Other than that, it's a home run and I will for sure be back the next time I visit.
We went here twice on our 2 day visit to NH. Â Got stuffed french toast the first day and DH got the freshest eggs I've ever seen (and tasted) with cornbeef hash. Â The coffee was fantastic too. Â Second day, I got his meal from the day before, the 2 eggs over easy (again, super fresh) with the cornbeef hash and he got an omelet which was just ok and home fries that were disgusting, I would not recommend them. Â The waitstaff were all young and very sweet. Â Pegs has outside dininig which we used the first day, the second day it was a little chiller so we sat inside. Â We went here the second day b/c we knew what we were getting. Â I'm sure there are other places to eat breakfast in the area but it's just breakfast, not rocket science so we did not venture to try a new place.
Review Source:Literally the worst breakfast (and perhaps the worst meal, period) I have ever been served. Â The "home fries" were just slices (slightly thicker than a potato chip) of potato, presumably fried at too-low heat in the deep fryer and laden with grease. Â No seasoning, no crispiness. Â Whites on the eggs were not set. Â Sausages were shriveled dry links. Â Even the toast was disconcertingly salty. Â Steer well clear of this place. Â Drive the extra half hour to Moonbeam Cafe in Gorham - easily one of the best breakfasts I've ever had.
Review Source:Mediocre, partially burnt food. FILLING is the only positive word our party could come up with for it. (But pancakes always are, aren't they?) Breakfast is served all day, but it's overpriced. No longer do they bring little bottles of maple syrup with your meal, but a miniscule disposable plastic container that holds maybe a tablespoon or so. You can get enough for your pancakes if you want to pay an exorbitant price for it.
The parking lot is tiny, but there's plenty of seating inside now that things have gone downhill in the kitchen.
As a side note, the men's restroom was clean but the women's restroom was filthy due to the floor being puddled with water because the sink faucet malfunctions, spraying water everywhere. (One poor unsuspecting woman was absolutely soaked by it.) Dirty paper toweling was everywhere!
Pros:
- very informal
- ok to bring children
- lots of seating
- kids liked the children's chicken finger meal.
Cons:
- not very clean
- credit card not accepted
- napkin dispensers had visible rust all over them
- french fries were hardly fried (almost frozen)
- all lunches came with an unappealing garnish of an unripe tomato wedge, 3 slices of pathetic-looking pickle, and questionable iceberg lettuce.
- the radio is playing from multiple speakers in the ceiling.
Overall, this is very old-school - but not in a cool way. The radio playing, along with tons of commercials, and the sub-par food would have been overlooked if the food was better.
Pegs was great. I got 6 pieces of french toast and hash....and a Ham and cheese omlette at 12pm. all for about $11-12.
They serve b-fast all day,. Only no credit cards accepted. there are atms in town..and in Lincoln NH, down the road. Its  a family friendly atmosphere and its cool they serve b-fast, lunch and dinner all day. So no matter what time of day you go hiking you can have dinner or breakfast......whenever you want. Good food great prices, friendly staff who love to talk with visitors. Ask them questions, they know the area well. It is well worth it and tis right on your way to Clark's trading post....
All in all Pegs was well worth the stop before my hike, and a great way to start the day. Make sure you mark a peg on your map for Peg's Restaurant when you visit the Notch!!!! ;)
