This place is a DUMP.  I took my sister to Plymouth when she was visiting from out of town recently.  I wanted to show her how cute and fun Plymouth is.  We wandered up and down the streets, bought treats for her dog at the cute dog shop, and then wanted to pick somewhere for lunch.

We thought Penn Grill looked like a nice enough place on the outside for a few salads or a wrap.  We wanted to sit inside because it was a hot day, so we headed in to the darkness of the restaurant.  There are only tall tables (not conducive for a stroller) and the stools were so squeaky.  The table was sticky.  The service was extremely slow (kitchen and waitress).  The bathroom was disgusting.  There were a ton of flies in the bathroom which is right next to the kitchen.  EW.  Her baby was waking up and we wanted to eat quickly, or we would have left.  Our salads were mediocre.  It was a very forgettable place, and I will not give it a second chance.  I can see how it might be cool for drinks only... just not a spot for lunch.

If there is a bar that really fits my personal interest its the Penn Gril & Bar. I trully feel at home when I'm here. Terrific for sports, excellent for catching up with old friends. My dad drives all the way from downriver to meet me here. He likes it too. Very friendly staff and the owner seem like a really nice guy who takes great pride in this place. The only downside is weekday nights they have trivia and weekends it gets pretty crowded. Other than that I don't have a bad thing to say. Okay, food is average but reasonably priced.

It is a bar.  Stick with the drinks.  If you must eat, the pizza rolls are OK.  The last time I was here I had a Turkey Ruben that was completely forgettable.  If you are looking for a quick lunch or dinner, there are better choices in downtown Plymouth.

Looking to have some drinks and watch some sports on TV - this place is fine.

Great for what it is. Good choice of local brews (Short's!) and get the sliders for the relish...

I dunno what happened to this place, but it went from super-cool, hidden-gem of a bar to a total douche-bag trap.

I had my first experience with The Penn this weekend while on a girls night with a few friends. If I were 5 years younger, unmarried and wearing a few less articles of clothing I probably would have loved this bar. All in all it was an okay place but I did feel a bit old being surrounded by so many 20 something boys that were on the prowl.

I didn't eat here so I can't comment on the food. The drinks were decently priced and plenty strong. The music was a bit on the annoying side...Britney Spears? I didn't even know she was still alive.

I would give it two stars but given that I was out for a night with my lady friends it fit that bill pretty well. On a Friday night at 11 pm I can't really expect much else. I wouldn't make a habit of attending but if you're single and sexed up you may want to plan a visit.

The Penn is always fun as long as your drinking. It's not a quiet place and I wouldn't show up here simply to eat and run with kids in tow but it's a perfect spot to blow off some steam and get a little rowdy. It's known for great food and small restrooms but is most always a good time. A very local joint that's filled with regulars, it offers umbrella patio seating, an array of patrons of all ages and pretty solid service unless you're there when it's uber packed, then you'll roll the dice on wait times. The karaoke on Tuesdays is pretty fierce and would give Dino's in Ferndale some stiff competition, but mostly this place is just a fun time. It's close quarters so be ready to cram in on the small high-top tables unless you're sitting outside where you'll get a little more room to stretch out.

Overall, The Penn has great food. I think that drink prices are a little too much. My boyfriend and I split two pitchers of Labatt (Classy, I know) and it came to $24, not including tip--and it was a weekday night.

The male bartender has a great personality and the patrons were friendly as well. I didn't see too many young guys looking to get rough. But then again, I haven't been here on a weekend.

When we ate here another time, the fish taco's were very good. The spices were just right! Now, when a cook says that it's spicy, I expect it to be spic-ayyy and the cook lived up to my expectation.

Overall, I just wish the prices were a little cheaper and that they had more than one toilet for the ladies.

What a beautiful weekend to visit the Green Street Fair and stroll down the streets of Downtown Plymouth!!!  Unfortunately, my wife & I made a foolish decision to eat at this establishment.

Walking in, it felt like the guys were looking at my wife like she was on the menu, and although not packed (6pm on a Sunday night), it was loud and messy...  Chairs were in isles, the acoustics made it sound like there were 1,000 people there when all reality, there was about 20.  Well, we decided to stay anyway...

We ordered the soft pretzel appetizer that came with a cheese dip, and although hot, were pretty mediocre at best.  Strike #1...

My wife ordered the Penn burger and fries & I ordered there signature Pulled Pork sandwich with their Penn Chipotle Coleslaw which they bragged about in there menu.  It seemed like forever went by before we got our meal, and for being only 10% full, I was quite shocked.

During the wait, Strike #2 appeared in the form of a 50 yo + drunk, loud & obnoxious blonde with fluoresent white teeth who stopped to talk to a table with 2 late 40's male perverts, in which we found out she worked at Legg's, Bogart's & Henry the 8th's in the past and still loves wearing her thong panties.  In the words of Will Smith, "Now that's classy and sexy!!"  NOT!!!!  ;)

Well, after what seemed like forever, we finally received out food.  My wife really like her burger, but I thought the pulled pork sandwich pretty much stunk.  Their Chipolte Coleslaw, although I love spicy things, tasted pretty much like garbage.  There was really not coleslaw comparison, except for the cabbage, and it was just mixed with some type of chipolte sauce.  Yuck, for the first time, as being a coleslaw connoisseur, I didn't finish it, not even 1/4.  The pulled pork was luke warm and 1/4 of my sandwich was a hunk that hadn't even been pulled apart.  The BBQ sauce was pretty weak also, therefore, Strike #3!!!!

The bill would of been strike #4, but they already struck out in my book...
I could of swore the menu said the sandwiches came with fries, but we got billed for both orders.  They were supposed to be waffle seasoned fries, but when dropping off our orders, the waitress said they ran out of them!  :(

Needless to say, $40 dollars down the drain.  For that, I should of at least got a lap dance from that 50yo!  LOL

I gave The Penn Grill one star only because I can't give it zero stars on yelp.

    Food is forgettable bar food.

This place is noisy.  The service is God awful.  Not only have I had to wait forever every time I've been there but it is clear the staff has no training when it comes to alcohol.  This is true regardless of whether I sit at the bar or at a table.  I had to explain how to pour a pint and what neat meant to the bartender when I ordered a pint of Guinness and a Jameson neat.  Another time I had to instruct the bartender on how to make a martini as she did not know the ingredients.  Really??  And you are a bartender?

The place is full of loud, obnoxious, young guys looking to start a fight on the weekends.

The bathrooms are usually a horrible mess, with urine all over the place and sometimes vomit also.

I live a few blocks from this bar and have tried to like it in my quest to find a watering hole within walking distance of my house.  Sadly, I just can't, I will never be back again.

I hate this place, I hate this place, I hate this place. How many times did I say that? Three? Perfect, because there are three good reasons as to why I hate this place:
    1. The clientele- Can we say trashy? Every time I go here this place is nothing but trouble. Even when I don't go here and I am across the street this place is nothing but trouble. Ever see someone get thrown threw a bars front windows? Go here and you might get that chance.... (yes, I realize this was sometime ago, but still). Trash.

    2. The service here is impossibly slow. I'm pretty sure that when ever I have visited this bar I have this incredible ability to go invisible. It's a super power I never realized I had until being (or trying to be) a customer at Penn Grill. You should try it out, it seems that the people standing next to me also get the privilege of having this super power while there as well.

    3. One bathroom? I don't have to say anymore do I? Enjoy the wait, it's almost as fun as the wait for your beer.

I would avoid this place like the plague if you are reading this and I were you.

The scene at The Penn seems to be different depending on the night but consistent.

Yes, the bathrooms are small but it's no big deal.

The age range is pretty big from after work parties to girls nights out to simply passers-by. The Penn is definitely better later in the evening right around midnight. Everyone I have met at the bar has provided great conversation i.e. no small talk.

Karaoke night on Tuesdays is great but it does get louder and more packed. However, that is the fun. And the people who sing are surprisingly good.

I would recommend this place if you have just left some of the other bars and still have some energy left over later in the night.

Being a local Plymouth resident, I've found this place a great standby for a good, affordable drink and a laid-back good time. The bar staff is always on their game and keep things entertaining.

The food is at least average bar food - and everything isn't just dropped in a deep fryer. The soft pretzel sticks appetizer that they have occasionally is yummy, and their pizza's pretty good.  We had their hot wings this week and I was also impressed. You never know with hot wings, but these were hot enough to make your nose run but not blister your lips. Perfect if you ask me. Lots of sauce and a good heaping pile of wings... what more can you ask for?

The bar is well stocked and they usually have an average selection of drafts and more in bottles. Lots of big screen TV's that make for good sports watching as well.

In the summer they have a nice outdoor seating area that even has a TV facing the sidewalk so you can keep up on your favorite baseball game while soaking some rays (when you get them in Michigan, you get out in them!).

Casual bar, good prices, nice staff. Cheers!

I go to Detroit area on business and needed a place to have a  beer and some munchies.  this place served well.  Good service, the owner came by a few times to check on us, food came out fast and by gaw! the size of the calzone was like !!!!!....  I ate it all.  yummy stuff.

Tuesday nights was karaoke and I am used to the NOISY stuff but I was blown away by the quality of the people here.  They can sing~!

of course, beer is always good.

Oh what a joint!  Loud, boisterous - better when N'ville, P'mouth, & Deerborn Yupp Pupps stay home, or go 2 Dborn chelli's and cry in ur chili.  BBQ pulled Piggy, grilled tuna, burgers, 'n lots more.  Great summertime fresco-on-da-street.  Just simply great - my kids loved the place too.

I've only been here a couple times, but I love this place! The last time I was there, my friend and I split the bbq pulled pork and the turkey ruben. Perfect!

I think the most accurate way for me to describe Penn is that it is above average, but isn't necessarily the greatest.  The place is worth going to (as I've been several times) but isn't the kind of place I'd list as one of my favorites quite yet.

On the positive side, they do have very generous portions of food, and it is certainly better than what you would expect to be turned out at a bar/grill.  The burgers are always moist and cooked properly, and the Penn burger has a great house sauce that goes on it.  The salads are also quite good, and are portioned in such a way that you won't walk out hungry if it is the only thing you eat.  There are plenty of TVs around so you can always watch whatever game is on quite easily.  The staff has always been cordial and service has been quick, too.  Despite the relatively small kitchen I've never had to wait too long for food, even when they are busy.

On the downside, the interior is a little bit less than inspiring and looks a little on a the stale side to me.  The only seating available inside are high-tops, so if the weather isn't agreeable and those aren't your taste there are no other options.  Also, I think the drink selection, particularly beer, is a little bit lacking, especially considering that this is a grill & bar.  They don't have a very robust selection of draft beers to pick from, and nothing too exciting in bottles.

Overall not a bad place to go.  Again, above average, so you could do better, but could do a lot worse.

Good fresh food, large portions, good pizza, reasonable prices. My only complaints about this place are that on popular weekend nights it gets PACKED, standing room only unless you secure a table early. If not, you get to stand in the walkways that the wait staff need to get to tables and the main one from the bar across the place. You'll get bumped and prodded and stuff if you have to stand, which is annoying.

Good music is usually bumpin' when it's busy, TV's for the sports fans, keno for the gamblers. Nice looking fairly friendly staff usually. The crowd ranges from neighborhood regulars to run-of-the-mill gaggles of young D-bags.

The bathroom situation just sucks butt. If you're a female who can't pee in an alley, be prepared to wait in line for the one little tiny gross bathroom. Or, just don't drink a lot of beer while you're there.

And as previously mentioned, it's LOUD in there. If you want a place to even try to have a conversation without yelling, this isn't it.

Outdoor seating is great at the Penn -- but if it's too busy, they still have a large, large wall of windows that let the outdoors in.  Now that there's no smoking allowed in Michigan it's smelling pretty fresh in here.

As others have complained: the bathroom is way too small, and there is no wi-fi.  To the plus side there are at least 4 big screens on opposite walls.  Then there is a big screen at the top of the window wall from the inside and another one facing outward at the patio people.  Nice!  They also have Keno if you need to win some money to tip your attractive waitresses.

It is a sports bar and a little run down when you're there during times of intense sunshine to see the dull walls and floors.  This is about as much of a dive bar as you can get in downtown Plymouth (which is not really a dive at all compared to other areas around the D).  It has character, and their food is good.  Check it out and enjoy!

The Penn Grill is generally a place that I wouldn't like. It's a sports bar, they usually have generic food, are noisy and smoky.

I was pleasantly surprised.  The smoke is gone, but the noise and sports are still there.

What a nice place this is!  It was crowded, but  there are generally seats to be found. Sure the bathrooms are small, but I don't come to restaurants/bars to check out the bathrooms. (I leave that job to my kids!)

Their food is great!  We started our meal with a huge pile of onion rings that were some of the best we had ever tasted, although I did notice a bit of a fishy crossover in the taste.  I had the fish and chips and thoroughly enjoyed my meal. The fries were lightly seasoned and done to perfection, the fish was plentiful, hot and tasty. My wife ordered a calzone with ham, cheese, lettuce, & tomato which was wonderful as well.

And beer... BIG beers for little prices. My kind of place.

We constantly had friendly waitstaff stopping by our table to see if we needed anything else. The service was great!

So, in the end, the Penn Grill changed my mind. I think I can learn to coexist with the sports bar crowd......as long as it's at this place.

The Penn Grill is a good all around place and I often go there to catch sporting events on TV. One could consider it a sports bar as great HDTVs adorn the walls in every direction but the decor isn't as tacky as other sports bars. The food is much better than your average sports bar as well. The menu isn't huge which I think is a good thing because what they do make they do well. However, the menu does have variety and it's not all junk food. The service is solid and prices are reasonable. The bar has an average selection of beers with a good variety of liquor. For an added dimension, there is a quiz night and a karaoke night. So whether you are going there to watch sports or just have a few with friends the Penn Grill is a good choice.

Wonderful fish and chips, great Reubens, and a nice wait staff.  Cool owner as well.

Go here and be satisfied by good people, a good sports broadcast, and good prices.

Fix the bathroom up if you want five stars from me.

Great place!  Whenever I head to P-town to hang out with friends, I feel like that we often come here for drinks.  During the summer, I love sitting outside on the street scape.  Recently, my party even got free shots from our waitress (must of been our lucky night!).  The food is pretty good, I've really like their pizza but its pretty much its your typical bar food.  This place can get pretty crowded Thurs-Sun but has a great sports bar atmosphere.  The only annoying this is the tiny one person bathrooms.

    The good news is.

Great location, better than average bar food, nice to look out the big front window.  Nice big beers. Good Tv for sports.

    The bad news is.

Very loud even with a small crowd.  The accoustics are horrible.

Bathrooms are a disaster. Why the new owners have not redone the bathrooms is beyond me.

If you are out to watch a game and look at women it is cool, if you want a quiet dinner and talk I would look elsewhere.

Even though I gave some negatives I still enjoy it there.
