Oh yeah. Sat upstairs on the roof top deck last night, gorgeous evening. What a good time we had. Â Good drinks (including Foolproof beer on tap) and good service. Â
We had the special: cajun swordfish sandwich -- with sprouts, avocado and grilled pineapple. I had mine with sweet potato fries. So delicious -- healthy, satisfying and overall yummy.
Phil and his wife were there, checking on diners -- and they stopped by our seats to check on us twice during our visit. Â It's this kind of attention to detail that really makes a restaurant good and stay good. Â Thanks Phil for a lovely evening.
Hands down, my favorite breakfast joint in this area of RI.
Atmosphere: Phil's Restaurant is a very casual diner with outstanding breakfast food. URI students love it. Being seated next to the creaky kitchen doors really sucks, but now that they have a rooftop deck - problem solved.
Food: Phil's 2s is a great choice, but you better be hungry because it is no joke! A meal fit for a lumberjack. I really have no business ordering it (damn shame). The home fries are fresh and easily one of the best I've had. Coffee, pancakes, everything I've tried has been great. Not just good - great.
Service: The older woman who is there in the early morning is absolutely phenomenal. She's such a sweetheart.
Enjoy. Again and again :).
Lunch here was very simply awesome. Â Was craving a cheeseburger and man did they deliver, along with some fantastic sweet potato fries. Â Partnered with a cold blue moon from the tap in a big beer mug, I was in heaven. Â My server was great - efficient and helpful without being overbearing. Â Watched the cook grill up breakfast right in front of me as I sat at the counter. Â I will def be back a lot more to Phil's.
Review Source:Best fish taco I've had in a long while. Â Menu for lunch limited. Â But all we had was very good. Â This was once a very greeeeeezy spoon breakfast hole....albeit a great fast deal for breakfast. Â They remodeled since then and is much more comfy now. Â The wait staff much more professional and friendly than they used to be. Â Only lunched once so far, but will go again. Â Nice view from upstairs and in the summertime there's an open deck that everyone has raved about. Â Looking forward to a second visit.
Review Source:NOT for dinner.
We'd been going to Phil's for breakfast for years and finally tried them for dinner in the new upstairs dinning area. A mistake. Our waitress couldn't remember our drink order and came back a 2nd time to get it right. Our salads were clearly pre-assembled and waiting in the fridge to be served as needed so when we asked for one without onions and peppers (allergies), it came with those veggies anyway. A entree of of scallops was also clearly pre-assembled and waiting to be cooked and it looked and tasted like it. My undersized football shaped piece of swordfish was 'hand cut' from the tail end and dry. I'd have guessed it was frozen, but the menu said 'fresh local seafood' so I have to assume it was overcooked. A salmon dish was requested to be very rare but came overcooked.
All in all, barely and average level meal delivered with mediocre service and attention. Considering the bill was not small, I would not consider Phil's a place for dinner. Not a fine dinning experience.
I was impressed with the service more then the food.  Seeing there was a big ol' hair in my omelette.  I was 1/2 way threw eating it....yuck....I know.  The waitress swept the plate away & had the cook fix me another one & took it  off the bill.  By far the cheapest meal I have had in a while!  I would definitely go back!  I do find it weird that you can't use the front door though, you can only enter through the side, what-ev.
Review Source:Go for the food, not the sketchy ambiance. It Phils you up!
Best food-dollar value of any place our family frequents. Â One of the breakfast specials-- No. 2, I think -- give you two or three eggs cooked your style, toast, home fries and a giant pancake for something like $5. Â Unbelievable!
They are very accommodating with special orders, too. Â If you want a half blueberry-half strawberry pancake they'll make it (we're not a pain in the ass enough to request that, but a neighbor does -- every Sunday). Â We routinely order banana-chocolate chip pancakes. Â
The home fries are really good. Â Big chunks of hand-cut potatoes with onions and, I believe, peppers.
Toast choice is generous. Â Few places go beyond white, wheat and rye. Â Phil's offers raisin, too.
Food snobs probably won't like Phil's. Â They use table syrup rather than maple syrup. Â The coffee isn't fresh roasted and ground on the premises. The word organic does not appear on the menu.
Those who like eating with hordes of locals and getting a genuine Rhode Island experience should enjoy Phil's.
Phil's is resting on its past laurels.  Breakfast is ok.......but with the advent of the roof deck they raised their prices significantly, but not their quality.  Used to go for early bird specials but the night I ordered fish and chips and was told the "chips" did not come with the early bird, was my last visit for dinner.  Too bad....it  is pricing itself out of its following and not offering quality.
Review Source:Went to roof top last night. Hostess there said  very short wait. It wasn't. Sat at upstairs bar. It was chaos. No glasses for beer or water. Kept saying 5 more minutes. After 45 minutes we were seated. To make a long story short we didn't have our meal an hour later. And it was prime rib. Cut the thing and bring it!!  Everyone around us was  complaining about their food so maybe we were lucky. I actually think they we're out of dishes for the food. After expanding with a roof garden they can't handle the weekend traffic. Worst part is there is no night time view. Avoid this place on weekends.
Review Source:I have eaten bfast at phils many times.....not spectacular but adequate...not really worthy of rep.....college hangout in am......
Last week I got the Summer South County surprise  ....a new definable attitude towards everyone during the summer in Wakefield, Narry and the shore....
rude waitress.....poor food and overcharge . Â Â Will not eat there again
Went to Phil's for dinner and it was not very good. Â It's a great breakfast place but when it took 15 minutes to get drinks we started to get concerned. Â Ultimately after waiting and waiting we ended up leaving, we were disappointed. Â If you are open for business hire the right amount of staff.
Review Source:My #1 was pretty average (then again, so was the order). The home fries were delicious to me, but the other three people I was with hated them, thinking there was way too much pepper. My egg over medium was also way undercooked so I didn't eat it.
Didn't find anything spectacular about the place and my dining guests bordered on hating it, so meh. Sorry!
I was in Wakefield with a friend hitting up the only Starbucks for miles, when we decided to stop in town for breakfast. Some locals recommended the place, and it did not disappoint! The food was absolutely delicious! Best home fries I've ever had! But it gets a 4 out of 5 for service. It was crowded, but the staff could've been friendlier.
Review Source:This has been my favorite breakfast joint since I was 15, cutting class from SKHS (sorry Mr. Sheehan!). I moved up north, and still make the trek down at least once a year with the family for some amazing pancakes. If you are looking for some awesome breakfast diner food, you won't want to miss phil's.
Review Source:Phil's Is Better Than Ibuprofen
I'm gonna throw this out here: If you see college-aged kids at Phil's in the morning on a weekend, they're either drunk or still hungover. Â This is the place to be...with it even being part of the plans for a weekend.
"Yo dude, what do you wanna do this weekend?" "Let's hit up the bar and go to Phil's the next morning."
Phil's Restaurant isn't JUST some breakfast place. Â It's the go-to for many URI students when they're hungry after a night of partying. Â However, everyone is pretty civilized...mostly due to the fact that loud noises while hungover is less desirable than a Fran Drescher laughtrack.
I've seen a lot of older (more sober) people as well and I've never been there where people have been obnoxious. Â People are there for one reason...and one reason only. Â Fill up your stomachs if you're feeling well enough to do so (or still have room from Fat Jack's the night before).
Breakfast is my only experience there and I don't think I would want to grab dinner just because it would lose the novelty that is...Phil's.
This is the place to go when you are hungover and looking for something greasy to fill your stomach.
I have had both breakfast and lunch at Phil's and both were delicious! They have a lot of options and everything I have eaten was great!
The staff is super friendly and the service is fast!
Typically there is a wait on the weekend, but it is worth it! Try the bacon cheeseburger, you will not be sorry!
Came here for dinner a few weeks ago, and was pleasantly surprised. Though it's a diner, the food is rather good.
They were running a prime rib special, which included a soup or salad and potato/vegetable side. It was good, particularly for the price and the fact we were in a diner!
What really stood out was the fried calamari. I usually order it whenever I see it on the menu, but Phil's was the best I have ever had. It wasn't overly breaded, and instead was coated in a rich clear "glaze" (sauce implies it's heavy; it wasn't) that had the perfect balance of flavors with a little kick of lemon and heat from the banana peppers. I can't wait to go back for the calamari!!
This is a great place to grab an inexpensive meal, so long as you don't mind the dingy diner atmosphere. Can't wait to try their breakfast -- it's completely different management for the breakfast than the dinner, FYI.
I love this place.
Breakfast is great. Lots of combination choices, and it's cheap. I wish they served breakfast all day, but they do have a lunch/dinner menu that I have never tried. It's family owned and operated, and you can tell, because it has a very warm and welcoming atmosphere.
I always get the #2, a combo plate, with strawberry pancakes (real strawberries), scrambled eggs, wheat toast, hashbrowns, and sausage. My husband gets the same, but with chocolate chip pancakes and over-easy eggs. They're very accommodating, and if you go enough, the waitresses get to know you and know your order when you walk in.
The wait can sometimes be long, since it's a very small place. If you go earlier in the morning, it's not as bad, but 10-11 am on a Saturday or Sunday is not going to be an ideal time to grab a quick breakfast, especially with all the hungover college students. It's definitely a place to try though, especially if you want good, old fashioned breakfast.
Looking for breakfast on your way outta town? We were and Yelp came to the rescue yet again. The place is humble, unassuming from the outside and diner-like indoors. On a Friday morning it was almost completely filled with patrons who at first glance looked familiar with the somewhat overwhelming menu (don't you wish you could click on a person drinking coffee and see a thought bubble as to what they might recommend?). Ended up with "Phil's Best" which was great enough to tempt me into a souvenir T-shirt like the sample on the wall but the portions were large enough to assure I wouldn't fit into any of the available sizes after eating. The only thing a bit bland was the waitress' personality but that could just as easily be blamed on the New England unspoken protocol in general. While it's unlikely we'll return based on geographic reasons, this place is a MUST for anyone interested in BREAKFAST while in Wakefield.
Review Source:Was in nearby Charlestown for vacation and saw this place had great breakfast reviews. After eating here I wanted to write to confirm the reviews that this place was great. Simple menu and food is cooked on the grill right there. Visit if your looking for a simple inexpensive breakfast while on vacation
Review Source:As a local, I can tell you this is the BEST breakfast place in town, maybe even in the state. Â I've eaten here over 50 times in the past year and tried just about everything on the menu and its been just as awesome every time. Â This place is a simple diner filled with good waitresses and focused on quick service and good food. Â I wouldn't bother eating anywhere else until you've at least tried Phil's. Â Best food for the price, hands down.
Review Source:DISCLAIMER: Every amazing review for this place is for breakfast. I believe it's awesome. I, unfortunately, had dinner here.
The atmosphere of this place reminds me of a diner in the middle of Nevada. Dark, tinny radio in the corner, and ceiling fans spinning slowly. This place may be a great breakfast diner, but it tries to transform into something nicer for dinner and largely fails.
The menu goes a little more upscale than diner faire. They do NOT serve their wonderful breakfasts all day, instead opting for more traditional entrees. They do have sandwiches and a cheaper specials menu. My French dip was pretty good - there was a lot of it. My partners' fish and chips were also good. Nothing special, but slightly above average.
The service was slow, unfortunately. Our water did not get refilled until we asked a waitress who wasn't even assigned to our table, and the bill took forever to be processed.
Pretty good food (and a local place to boot) gets 4 stars. But the weird quasi-diner-trying-to-be-more ambiance and slow service knocks it down to a sad two stars. I WILL BE BACK, though. Just for breakfast.
Phil's Restaurant is my new favorite breakfast place in South County, RI. It's everything I want in food and ambiance from a diner. Â 4-stars is relative to other diners of a similar type, not relative to all kinds of restaurants.
After a long, rainy, and exhausting Saturday spent cleaning up our beach house, I awoke still tired on a drizzly Sunday morning, and ventured out for brunch in Wakefield. When we got to Phil's there was a line extending outside (in the drizzle), so we noted that this must be a good place, but we passed it by; however, by the time we circled back the line outside was gone, so we parked and went in.
The first thing you notice (other than the length of the line you're standing in) is that the place is packed with locals. You know they're locals because you see people wearing t-shirts that say things like "this is not my vacation, this is my life". Â The wooden floors are uneven, the feeling is beach-casual. Everything is simple, authentic, and unpretentious.
For $5.75, you get pretty much anything you want piled high on your plate. Â For example: 2 or 3 eggs (your choice) with any kind of large pancake. Â I had the Southwestern Omelet special which was $1 more, and because I craved the calories I ordered a big Maine-blueberry pancake, too. Â It was more than I could eat. Â Life is good.
phils is a little spot thats great to go to on almost any occasion. the homefries here are the best ive ever had. they use red skinned potatoes and spices that make them out of this world. it does tend to get busy, but the wait is worth it. go before 7 and get the early bird special for less than 3 dollars!
Review Source:I knew Phil's was going to be good. Â When you pull up and see a huddle of people, standing in the rain just waiting to get, it has promise. Â As I was waiting in line, the cars would drive by slowly asking how long we had been there trying to guage when they should park and commit.
We were finally seated. Â It is not a 'traditional' diner, but about as close as it will get given it is a brick and morter establishment. Â The menue was great and the service was really good. Â I am not sure how the ladies delt with it given the crowed inside and the line out side. Â We were seated, drink orders taken. Â Coffee was quick and was filled in a timly manner.
Everything I had was really good as well as the food I picked off of the wife's plate. Â The only thing I will say is that the hash is only middle tear. Â I was a little disapointed. Â As I work my way through all of the diners in RI, that is one of the measuring sticks, so Modern or Jiggers it is not. Â But for everything else, it is worth the wait and the effort.
In full disclosure, my wife had the Biscuts and Gravy. Â She was not real happy with the gravy. Â She tends to lean towards the white cream gravey and is not a huge fan of sausage gravy. Â I on the other hand love sausage gravey. Â So this stuff is what I remember, back in my child hood, as being SOS, and I loved it.
The portions are huge and the proce is fantastic. Â I will also say that seems to be a big constant in my selection of top diners. Â Not that I am a quantity over quality person, just that all of the good ones do not hold back. Â I think it is just the true diner history of providing a great meal at a great proce to the average person.
So given my travels and that I try to eat at a different diner around RI every other weekend, this is a solid place to experience.
Phil's in Wakefield is definitely a South County hidden gem!  The decor may be very old-fashioned but don't let that fool you, that's part of it's charm and the food is great. Awesome breakfasts at unbelievable prices!  Can't go wrong with anything here, but some of my personal favorites are the omelettes, pancakes, and belgian waffles.  It's a good old-fashioned diner with a  very nostaglic feel from times gone by.
Review Source:Phil's is amazing. The perfect place to go for a late post-hangover breakfast. They have great breakfast food, delicious homefries, good service and CHEAP prices. Their breakfast specials are 4.95 and you won't need to eat lunch after.
The old diner feel of Phil's Restaurant can transport you into a Norman Rockwell painting. If you like good simple Americana cooking and cheap prices, Phil's can't be beat.
***4.5 stars***
so, on the weekend of moving my boyfriend into URI, his roommates came and woke us up to go get breakfast. Â still tired and pissed off from being woken up, i patiently complied. Â i put on my sunglasses and went to phils.
it was my first time at phil's, and it was definitely worth the 10 minute wait and being woken up.
i ordered the #2, eggs, sausage and rye toast. Â all came out fresh.
our waitress was kind of a bia but i can only suppose that she was overwhelmed.
the place is REAL small, and gets crowded quickly.
i will definitely go again, it beats ihop (although i dont even know if they have it up here?)
but ill only make it if i get woken up again by his roommates...
