When you walk in the smell makes you think that you are in store for some top notch BBQ, unfortunately that was not the case. Â The employees couldn't have been any nicer, and the service was great, but I go to restaurants for the food and the Pig Shak is just average in that department. Â It wasn't bad, but it wasn't good enough to make me go back or recommend it to anyone else.
The ribs had very little smoke flavor to them, and they were way too tender.. anybody that knows good bbq will tell you that a rib is supposed to have just enough "toughness" to it that you have to put a small amount of effort in to get it off the bone. Â It seemed like they had been smoked VERY briefly, then finished off in an oven. Â The BBQ beans were pretty good, and were probably my favorite part of the meal. Â I also had the mac n cheese, which was ok. Â The only thing that differentiated it from your standard grocery deli mac n cheese was the dry rub they sprinkled on top.
I was really hoping to like this place, but it just didn't do it for me. Â If you like your ribs REALLY moist and tender with little smoke flavor, you would like it more than I did. Â I probably would've given it 2.5 stars but thought the 3 star "A-OK" rating was a bit too much.
Pig Shak is located in a small strip of stores along with Fox's Pizza. The atmosphere inside is nice and the person working the counter was very nice. You have the choice of a regular and sweet bbq sauce, which is available on the bench style tables. This is where the goodness ends.
The pork on the pulled pork sandwich is so salty here that it gave me heart palpitations after half the sandwich. I'm not kidding. It tastes (and was the color) as if a ton of dry rub was used on it after being pulled. It must have a very dangerous amount of salt in it. The price was about $5.50 I believe.
Beware.
