The bar was great, and the owner seemed like a pretty solid dude. I had the scallop and shrimp over pasta. I wasn't too impressed with the scallops. I would have preferred a better sear on them. The plate was fair priced, just not a big wOwZer! The sweet potato fries came highly recommended but they were out. I'm still not sure how I feel about the name of the restaurant, and the story behind it. They have a full page on the back of the menu describing why it is called Pinhead Susan's. I thought the story was pretty dumb and meaningless. I think they should have made up something else, or improved the variations on the menu instead. I'm sure ill be back, if nothing else for the alcohol.
Review Source:I don't got to Schenectady often just because it feels like it is hours away from Troy and I'm kinda lazy, but I was at Union College watching a hockey tournament and needed food so my parents and I stopped here. Â I got a burger with bacon and blue cheese. Â It was prepared medium-rare as I requested with lots and lots of bacon. Â
Ummm, I don't have much else to say. Â It was a good burger. Â The waitress was friendly. Â I'd stop in again if I was in Schenectady.
Big St. Patty's Day event today. Advertising Corned beef and cabbage... always wanted to try this place so packed up my wife, daughter (18), son (20) and his college buddy (21) to sample their fare. Â Alas, since my kids aren't 21,we were denied entrance. Bouncer had to check with the owner, who said "no" can't come in. Â
As the GM of a local automobile dealership accustomed to providing and analyzing customer service this seemed a bit over the top. We were asked if we would be staying for the bands that were playing later, and said we were there for the meal No dice,, the kids weren't 21. This in spite of youngsters clearly visible in the establishment through the windows.
Opted instead to go for Italian. (We'll do the corned beef and cabbage thing at home tomorrow). Had a wonderful meal at Perreca's, dropped $200.00 there. I guess two underage kids eating dinner with their parents was too big a risk for Pinheads....appears the place is aptly named. Â You only get one chance to make a first impression, based on that ,we won't be back.
I decided to check out Pinhead Susan's, an Irish style pub in Schenectady. Â The pub fare was decent, but nothing seemed to stand out to me to make this place make me want to add a few stars. Â I had a beer to go with my meal, and Pinhead Susan's has a decent beer selection. Â I had dined on some macaroni and cheese mixed with corned beef, which while it was tasty, wasn't really filling. Â Maybe if I come back here another time, I may have a better experience.
Review Source:Their crab dip. I want that all the time. I could eat that stuff with ANYTHING, I swear.
I wound up at Pinhead's when I was in town just before Thanksgiving because Katie O'Byrnes was full to the rafters. I'm glad I wound up heading over here instead, because it was much easier to hear my boyfriend without the din.
We started with the crab dip which, if you haven't guessed, is now a huge favorite of mine. It came with tricolor chips that were surprisingly stale, but the dip itself was fantastic and needed no support to shine.
Local beer selection is fantastic and they have plenty of things on tap. I would recommend one of the local stouts, of which I tried and loved both (they only had two). My boyfriend ordered Adirondack IPAs, which I am not a fan of, but he enjoyed them well enough.
Our dinners were lackluster, to be honest, hence the three stars. I had a burger that was a perfect medium rare, but the bun was chewy and the toppings ran all over the plate. The waffle fries were okay, but also on the mushy side. My boyfriend had a Buffalo wrap and a side salad, and as a guy who went to Syracuse University and spent plenty of time eating legit hot wings, the sauce didn't begin to stack up.
The waitress was attentive, but the place was mostly empty. Overall, if you want a nice place to relax, catch the game and decomp, this is perfect. Not a "scene" bar, but probably good if you want to check a Proctors show - they labelled things in the menu as being show-friendly, so time budgets aren't an issue. I think Wicked was in town when we were there, so I may visit home again for a Pinheads-and-off-Broadway run.
It's a loud and noisy pub that is plenty alive. The food is pretty good but I don't know if it's authentic Irish or not. There is parking across the street. I think the restaurant is better known for it's name than anything. The service is decent too. Little kids could be overwhelmed by the noise.
Review Source:I liked this place the first few times I ate here. Over time, though, I developed a dissatisfaction with Pinhead Susan's. I'm not sure if they made changes to their kitchen staff or food prep, but something changed and I don't think the quality is as good as I recall it being. On top of that, there were some particularly irritating servers.
I have to say though, there was one employee here who I got a kick out of. They had the kids' version of Jeopardy on TV and the bartender was really getting into it. But his answers were completely off the wall. My favorite one went something like this:
Trebek: "Sitting Bull was the chief of this Native American tribe."
Bartender: (with complete seriousness and confidence) "INDIANS!"
Frank: "What the fuck, man? Really? Not only is that ridiculously incorrect, but it's not even in the form of a question!"
tl;dr -- As humorous as that guy was, I'm really not inclined to go back.
OK, this time I've gotta be careful. I eat here. Â I like to eat here. Â I want to be able to eat here again. Â
This place isn't 75 years old. Â But it feels like the bar I had my burgers and brew at when I was in high school. Â No, they don't serve 16 year old's. Â But, the bar I went to in high school did. Different time, different place, different culture.
I like the bar. Â I like the beer. I like the food; burgers, sandwiches, steaks. I don't like the table service.
I've only had pub food here, no entrees. I had the Guiness Burger a while back and it was pretty good. Another time I had a burger it was way overdone (I asked for med. rare).
Pinhead's is a good place for a group of friends to get a drink on a Friday or Saturday night. The only thing is that it can get rather crowded and unless you're an attractive lady or friends with the barkeep, it can take quite a while to get a pint.
Not a bad location, and a good story (the "Susan is a Pinhead" graffiti which long graced a wall in the area is memorialized in the bar's name and in a newspaper article inside the door) can go pretty far, but drinks and service are what makes a bar...
Ordered a short Guiness, and that's what I got - shorted. Â I thought I was getting a half pint, and I got about four ounces in a very small glass, which the bartended did not even bother to fill up. Â Instead of pouring a guiness the appropriate way, allowing it to sit and then pouring the rest, he poured it like a normal beer, and it was mostly foam. Â I asked him to please fill it up and I got attitude and it still wasn't filled. Â AND it cost almost as much as a regular pint. I'd rather have just ordered a pint and drank what I wanted if I'd known that was the attitude I'd get.
2 stars for location and story.
