This is a cheap, delicious place to eat! I went for the $1 tacos and my travel partner went for an enormous wrap! This thing was huge!! The food was really good too, as was the service. Our waitress was very accommodating of our needs and made great recommendations! I'd recommend it, especially if you are budget conscious.
Review Source:Tuesday night taco night has become a staple of life in Kill Devil Hills, so they tell me. Â I went for the $1.50 beef tacos and had three of them along with two bottles of Pacifico since this lovely beer from Mazatlan was on special as well. Yes!
I would have been swayed towards giving The Pit four stars had the tacos been a little bigger and had the place not been in the process of closing for the night at around 8:00 PM. Â I did not know bars did that.
i am not one to write many reviews but i felt it necessary to write one for the pit. Â this review is not written out of anger, but just to balance out some of the reviews that led me to eat at the pit. Â i am a big yelp user so while visiting the outer banks i turned to yelp to find a good restaurant to visit for lunch. Â the pit came up with high stars and a decent amount of reviews. Â
i took my family in and immediately liked the casual beach feel of the restaurant.  service was averagely pleasant.  the one star is for the food.  all the food we had, which consisted of pizzas and tacos, was awful.  the pizzas were obviously frozen and the chicken in the tacos was a low quality frozen pre-sauced product.  even at $2 a taco  i felt the value was not there.  i can truly say i am puzzled how a place that calls its self a pizzeria and wrap shop is not making their own pizza.  again not angry, just truly confused how this place got the reviews it did with the level of food they are serving.
go here for a drink, use the bar enjoy the feel.  for a pizza, taco, or other  meal i would suggest trying elsewhere.
We visited the surf shop to rent a skim board. They were all booked out. The owner talked to my teenagers and worked with them on taking a board from stock and renting it. Awesome dude. Nice to know people love what they do so much they are excited and share their passion. We will be coming back
Review Source:If you have an appetite like I do, The Boardriders Grill will not dissappoint! I got a burrito and I was thinking "This isn't going to be enough", so I bought nachos as well. When the nachos came I was astonished by the mountainous portion of nachos which could have been a meal in itself. Then when I got the burrito it was the size of my arm! The food was sooo good!
You have to go if you are starving because you won't regret it!
We stumbled upon this gem a few years ago when the restaurant we were planning on going to was closed mid-day. Â They have great food at a good price with a nice atmosphere.
When we returned to the area a few years later, things were still up to par, but we also discovered Taco Tuesdays. Â Although it is pretty packed, the food was still good and the service wasn't bad.
We stopped by this place on a whim and we're glad we did. Our kid wanted Dairy Queen or Subway, but we don't like eating at chains while on vacation. We were lucky that this was the first place we saw after DQ. Â We all ordered sandwiches and were served in a reasonable amount of time. Our waitress was very pleasant and NEVER let our glasses get empty. The food was outstanding. Even our picky kid loved her food and has been begging us to go back. We will definitely be back. Well done!
Review Source:Cool, laid back atmosphere. I had the chicken Caesar warp and it was huge and fresh, although they need to work on their wrap-making skills as mine fell apart soon after picking it up. My friend had the grilled cheese with bacon and avacado and and she loved it. Friendly attentive service. Highly recommend!
Review Source:I'm giving this a one star rating for now, but if someone can give me an intelligent and reasonable explanation for why I received the treatment that I did from here, then I'll gladly reconsider my rating.
This is our first time visiting the OBX area. We'd been having a pleasant experience so far, prior to this incident. Boyfriend and I were hungry, so we looked up some places and find The Pit Surf--saw that it had pretty good reviews, it's close to where we're staying, and the $1 tacos were hard to pass up.
We walk through the door and see that it's pretty packed. That's fine, we can wait. So we wait. And wait. I figure someone will eventually come over and seat us. But no one does. Actually, no one even acknowledges us. Not even a "Hello! Welcome!" or "Sorry, we're full." or even a freaking head nod. Nothing. Nada.
So we just keep standing there. And now it's getting awkward. We start to think maybe this is a "order and sit" type of place, so we head over to the bar to order. And again we stand and wait. And wait. Again, no acknowledgement from either of the two girls working at the bar. The last straw? When another customer walks in as we're waiting at the bar, and the girl looks RIGHT OVER US and takes that customer's order right away. Really? REALLY????? Â
So we walk out.
Look, I've been at other places where it seemed forever before anyone noticed that we were there, usually because they were super busy. But the thing is, they EVENTUALLY NOTICED WE WERE THERE. This is the first time I've ever been flat out IGNORED, where no one even attempted to make some kind of acknowledgement of our presence. We did try to call over a waiter, but the truth is I really couldn't tell who was a waiter and who wasn't, and everyone literally just walked right past us, without even a second glance. Â
I'm not the type to go on Yelp to rant and give an emotionally-charged rating, because honestly, that's what 90% of Yelp seems to be. But how am I supposed to rate fairly when I wasn't even given a chance to, um, try the food and interact with the service...because the service ignored me? I'm puzzled. Like I said, this has never happened to me before. I really want to know why I was ignored. Were you really so busy that you didn't notice two people standing there?
Hoping to be enlightened.
The Pit has now become a long-time fixture in Kill Devil Hills. Â I remember when it opened. Â In the beginning it was just a club that would let kids under 21 so they had somewhere to go listen to bands, play games, and hang out. Â Then they expanded to the surf shop and built a separate building. Â Now they have Boardriders Grill. Â
In the main building you'll find the "hang out" part. Â Downstairs on the ground floor is a stage and venue for bands and parties. Â On the main floor, there's a dining area and small bar. Â On the top floor there's some video games, pool, and chairs to chill in. Â Sunday is Euronight with electro/house music spinning and Thursday is Mug Night. Â
At The Pit out back the surf shop keeps expanding so I can't even keep track of all that's offered. Â I will tell you that they keep up to date with all the rad stuff locals and surfers need to keep up with the island image and life. Â They offer board rentals, surf lessons, lots of cool stuff. Â One thing that's really cool is that they're home to "Skim City" which is a sick skimboarding brand. Â My brother used to be sponsored by them and my family was never short on encounteres with the Skim Crew! Â A boardsport lifestyle comes as naturally as going barefoot on the beach and The Pit acknowledges that. Â
The Boardriders Grill has come a long way to have a following of its own. Â $1 tacos from 4 to 6pm and all day on Tuesdays always draw a crowd! Â I don't know how else to describe it but how they do -- a surf-inspired menu. Â My Mom loves their fish tacos and my friends and I can barely handle their burritos! Â Spice and gargantuan size with fresh fixin's. Â I love that you can eat inside or out on the front deck and the service is friendly and fast. Â
You never know you'll run into at The Pit. Â Steve Pauls and Ben Sproul have done a pretty good job at keeping it up for locals and visitors alike though. Â Stop in and hang out...you'll have a good time.
Really great on tuesdays for $1 tacos and $3 margaritas. On thursdays are $1 pints. This is actually one of the few decent places to grab a drink in the OBX and it's a place that has a nice mix of locals and tourists. Be warned though that the kitchen closes at 9. I definitely learned that the hard way and was quickly reminded how far I was from NYC. Other than that, it's a chill place to hang out. Oh and be wary of teen nights on some days.
Review Source:Taco Tuesday! Most tacos are $1 (fish are $3) and are chock full of toppings. Definitely order the salsa, sour cream and guacamole. $3 bottles of all Latin beers the same night. Good service, fun atmosphere - plus a coupon for their surf shop next door. Cool surfing videos are shown and there's even a loft with a pool table.
Review Source:This place is just what it says it is, a surf hangout. Â I've only been to the night time bar but during the day its also a surf shop and apparently you can get food there too. Â
Night Bar:
A great popular place to go. Theres an outside patio, two bars, pool upstairs, and dance floor downstairs.
Sunday - Euro Night, lots of europeans from around the area come to drink and dance. Â
Monday, Wednesday, & Friday - Teen night for those under 21. Â If you're on vacation and your teenager is looking for something to do this is where they should go. Â No alcohol is served and its plenty safe for them. Â Has been going on for a while.
