On the desolate road to Mount Rushmore, Lusk is one of the few towns you drive through that offers some dining options. There wasn't much there, so it was either a diner or pizza. We opted to give the pizza place a whirl.
The Pizza Place offers pizza and sandwiches, all at reasonable prices. Unfortunately, the staff aren't quite on top of their game. Initially the missus' and I were going to order a calzone to split. So the cashier asks what we want in it, and we say broccoli. She then says "is that all?" and I said, "yeah, that's good." Then she says "well I'm only asking because we don't have ricotta." How do you even attempt to sell a calzone when you don't have ricotta in the first place?! So we then decided to each get our own personal pizzas. I was shocked when the missus' ordered hers with mushrooms, and was then asked if she wanted them fresh or canned. Who wants to eat a nasty canned mushroom?!
So the pizzas themselves come out after about fifteen minutes (we wasted the time playing with the Where's Waldo books) and they looked pretty tasty. At first bite they were really good. The sauce wasn't sweet, the crust was crisp and the pizza was very cheesy. However, it's definitely too much cheese, and at the end of the day we all had cheese remorse. I only had about 2 1/2 slices of my 4-slice pizza and was feeling stuffed.
It's a decent enough place if you're craving pizza, but just be warned that it will give your weekly allowance of cheese.
Stopped in after seeing this highly rated place was on my route on July 16, 2013. I was in just before 4 pm on a Tuesday so there were only a few customers. Got  a very good side salad with Dorothy Lynch salad dressing (new to me) that was very tasty and included a bread stick.
I got a pizza with pepperoni and onion pizza. While not the best I have had on the East Coast it was definitely the best I have had in the West. I asked the manager her secret. She says they use fresh ingredients and good water, and have learned to deal with the higher alitidude. Sauce was tasty and the crust was done almost to perfection.
If your travels take you through Lusk then The Pizza Place is definitely worth a stop.
I definitely don't agree with the reviewer than said their pizza was just okay. This place is just genuinely good and it would be so in any city. They have a lot of different interesting pizza choices (I got the Southwestern/Mexican one a few times), and their sides are all above-average as well. The service was always great and the atmosphere has a good rural feel to it. Tables, floors, and walls seem very solid. If I recall correctly, the price wasn't bad at all. Probably even considerably below what you'd expect elsewhere.
Basically, there are like three restaurants in Lusk. I don't remember their names, but the one at the south end of the single mile-long main road was not that good. The one in the middle by the hotel was okay. This one, at the north end of the road, is worth the five stars many people are giving it.
Oh my gosh, best find ever! Stopped on the way to the Black Hills. So surprised to find such an excellent place in such a small town. Had a small chef salad, it was huge. The garlic cheese bread was amazing, as was the cheese pizza my wife/kids had. On the way home we ate there again. Had the hot Italian sub this time, it was fantastic. The bread it was served on was incredible. Well done Pizza Place, keep up the good work.
Review Source:Yumtastic! We stopped on our way thru to Mount Rushmore. We got a cheese pizza & a sausage and pepperoni pizza...both were delicious!! The kids begged to stop when we come back thru. They even had 'Where's Waldo' books for the kids (and us) to look at until the pizza came. We will come again!
Review Source:I never expected to have pizza this good in Wyoming.
My wife, who is from New York even approved of it.
Subs are also great. GET THE BBQ SUB! It's probably 3 pounds of meat. Not 2 oz of meat and filler like Subway (only other place to get subs in town)
A bit pricey, but better than any other option I have found in the area.
As per the other reviews: We were driving through Lusk, WY on our way back from Mt. Rushmore and felt a burst of hunger. Â Seeing as this was literally the only town on our route for another 100 miles or so, we decided to see what they had to offer. Â We decided upon the aptly named "The Pizza Place," as our other choices were, well, non-existent.
Three pizza-snobs from NY were supremely down with this pizza. It was good, not just for where it was from, but in general. Â
Now a non-asshole review: You get a thick, but not overly so thin-crust pizza, with plenty of flavorful cheese, and a rich sauce. Â The pepperoni was a bit sparse, but that's just me being picky. The pricing is ultra low, as is EVERYTHING in Wyoming, and the beer selection was enough to keep us all happy. Especially those of us who didn't have to drive.
The only downside, in my opinion, is that they didn't take credit cards.
If you ever have the misfortune of being in Lusk, make sure you visit The Pizza Place. It's seriously unfair that this amazing pizza place is in this random town.
They're not open on Sundays and they're not open that late but it's worth trying to find a time to go there. You really can't go wrong with anything you order. The pizza, bread, and salads are all so good.
This is the one and only thing I miss about my time living in Lusk.
So my husband and I are driving through Wyoming, starving to death since there is nothing for miles!! Suddenly, we happen about the "city" (Isn't there a population minimum to count as city or something?) of Lusk and the single most populated street we've seen in several hours. HALLELUJAH!!! Upon seeing The Pizza Place, we immediately parked and headed in. Let me tell, this pizza place smelled like holy heaven after hours of hunger.  We ordered a medium-size meat lovers pizza and a side of breadsticks- I had to convince my husband that we did not need a large- even starving, I know when my eyes are being bigger than my stomach :P but I did compromise on some breadsticks. The breadsticks were warm and fluffy, though I would have liked it if they were more garlic-y (but that's just my preference). The pizza was surprisingly great! These guys have a pretty good crust recipe. The pizza had the  right amount of sauce to cheese to toppings ratios too. Mind you, this pizza wasn't the best I've ever had or really that spectacular. But it was still good, and I did enjoy it :) Overall, if you are in Wyoming and hungry, I highly recommend stopping here- you probably will not find better food, or any food for that matter, if you don't stop here :P
Review Source:My wife and I were driving through Wyoming on our road trip and this was the ONLY populated street we drove through so we stopped for dinner. We walked in and grabbed a menu and ordered the medium size meat lovers pizza and some breadsticks. We took a seat and waited. The pizza took a little while, and it would have been nice to get the breadsticks first, but it was worth it! The pizza was delicious and the breadsticks were also very good. The size of the medium was about what you'd get at most chain stores large! And the prices were very good! It was a nice surprise to find such a good pizza place in the middle of nowhere, haha.
Review Source:Warm fresh homemade bread sticks. Choice of regular or thick crust pizza, with generous toppings. Barbecue flavor was crisp and interesting; sausage and mushroom was pleasant.
Salmon salad: Great mix of salty salmon and spicy raspberry ranch dressing plus other chewy and nutty goodies.
Yummy dessert pizza - we had blueberry - kind of like a thin coffee cake.
We're fat and happy.
Simple pizza shop with big pizzas. Â We got one of the house specialties with tons of veggies, sausage & pepperoni. Â The food was good, we even took left overs to go. Â They had Fat Tire on tap which was a plus. Â
The staff was friendly, prices reasonable (a little over $20 for two beers and large, loaded pizza) and they had atlases by the front counter. Â We stopped on our way x-country and discovered that cellphone reception & Google Maps were not reliable in Wyoming, so the atlases came in handy.
As you drive through Wyoming there are two things that you worry about: where is a gas station? and what are we going to eat? My husband and I stumbled upon the Pizza Place in Lusk after I began having a blood sugar melt down in the car. What a lucky day for us! The decor is awesomely small town and so comfortable. The food is AMAZING! We ate like kings, enjoying pizza, bread, wings and salad. The homemade sauce and crust were so yummy! The staff is kind and we had excellent service even though it was packed on a Friday for lunch time. This place is great, but off the beaten path so if you have some time check it out it's about 45 min off if I-25.
Review Source:My sister and I stopped off here on a cross-country drive last summer. Â Let me just say that we are native New Yorkers and, therefore, real pizza afficionados. Â And this place is great! Â We were shocked to find such good pizza in Wyoming, of all places. Â The crust is homemade and perfect. Â And you can even get Sicilian pizza, which is hard to find even on the East Coast. Â A hot pizza and a cold beer (several on tap!) was the perfect end to a hot day of driving.
Review Source:How high are your expectations driving through the middle of Wyoming? I mean, really? Five stars because your expectations are low, and The Pizza Place supersedes them. We had a hot sub sandwich and a lightly garlic-sauce-glazed calzone. Both were constructed with homemade crust and dough which is flakey and soft and perfect. Bonus love for serving microbrews on tap, a wood-fire smell coming from the kitchen, and the massive atlases, Harley-Davidson books, and National Geographics ready to read as you're standing at the counter. If you're driving through Lusk (en route to Mount Rushmore, no doubt), really, you should stop.
Review Source:This is by FAR the best pizza/calzones in Wyoming (not that that's saying much, mind you) and it is in the little town of Lusk of all places! I try to stop here and eat any time I am driving through Lusk (which isn't often enough), and I am even tempted on occasion to make a special trip JUST for the pizza! When the rest of Wyoming is flooded with the useless combination of cardboard and ketchup provided by Pizza Hut and Dominoes, it's almost unfair that Lusk gets this place all to itself!
There is also a nice little coffee shop attached to the pizza place which is great to grab a drink on your way out the door.
If you happen to be driving through Lusk, do yourself a favor and stop for pizza at the Pizza Place!
This is a great find, passing through Lusk. Â The people who work here are really nice and the service is excellent. Â The pizza is pretty good - nice and crisp with good toppings, though the sauce on my pizza was a little too watery and sweet. Â Their chicken wings are awesome with the bleu cheese sauce. Â The salads come with a lot of cheese - be careful!
All in all, a great stop for lunch on a road trip through Wyoming.
A much-needed addition to the culinary scene in Lusk, The Pizza Place is in the heart of downtown (you can't miss it) and has great pizza and salads. The sauce is great and the crust is to die for. I can't remember the last time I ate pizza underneath a giant buffalo skin, but hey, everybody needs ambiance!
