Good but very average Mexican food. Â Was really hoping for something more.
Chips were very good. Â Ordered the chile verde, which they recommended. Â Rice and beans were just OK. Â The entree was good but nothing to write home about. Â The place did have a nice hole in the wall feel to it. Â
Ultimately, this is Piru and there really is nothing much else to eat here. Â If you end up here, it certainly is not bad. Â But I would probably head down to Fillmore instead if I was headed that direction.
There is a reason why a tiny, little place, in a rural town, off the main road, is the only full time restaurant around.
Cause the food rocks!
From the salty chips to the delicious salsa to the torta's perfectly crisped bread to the pungent onion slices. They nailed it.
You will walk out happy!
I came here with my 2 kids (10 and 7) on the way from Santa Clarita to the Fillmore Fish Hatchery on a Saturday. It was easy to find (turn right at the light on Main Street in Piru off the 126, and then turn right onto Center Street, and it's right there), and parking was not a problem on the street outside. This is a super-small town, where the cemetery, church, school, library, post office, and little stores are all on one strip of street right through town. There are about 10 tables or so, and it's certainly not a fancy place, but if you're looking for something "not commercial" and "local" this is what you're looking for. The service wasn't all that speedy or overly-friendly, but it's the kind of place where you can feel relaxed and hang out a bit while you're waiting for your food anyway. (The chips and salsa and the drinks came pretty quickly.) I thought it was kind of funny that our 3 meals came out separately, one after the other, kind of like I would do it at home if I were in the kitchen cooking up 3 separate meals for my family. Haha. They have a big TV on the wall that had a game on, so it's guy-friendly if you're on the way to or from the shooting range that apparently is somewhere in the area. (Two groups of people -- men, women, and kids -- were clearly on their way home after the range when we were there.) The manager was nice, and one of the women who cooks there gave me a smile and a wave on the way into the kitchen. It's one of those mom-and-pop kind of places. The food was good but not unbelievable. I had enchilada plate with rice and (pinto) beans, my 7-year old had a cheese quesadilla, and my 10-year old had a beef taquito plate. The menu had lots of options on it. They do take-out too. Prices were reasonable. A good place for kids because it's not pricey, it's relaxed and casual, the food is kid-friendly (tacos, taquitos, quesadillas, burritos), and it's not quiet or fancy.
Review Source:This place is amazing. Â Family run. Â Great menu with lots of choices. Â There is something for everybody.
The food is excellent. Â It is all very fresh tasting. Â Nice size portions.
The homemade chips and salsa are incredible. Â Some of the best chips I have ever had. Â
The service is terrific. Â The staff is very friendly. Â Nice atmosphere.
If you are looking for great Mexican food, this is the place.
Pancho's place is a small diner that you can sneeze and pass up. It sits in a very small town on the way to the outdoor gun range we go to- Mike Thompson's.
This place is nothing fancy at all, but they are a small family owned place with everything made fresh. This has become tradition for days that we go to train at the range. The food is very affordable and they have horchata!! What else do you need.... Glad we are outdoors after we eat though.... ;)
fresh chips
fresh tortillas
fresh salsa
did i say fresh?
someone's grandma is in the back and keepin it real!
best chicken enchiladas i have had - simple and fresh!
you have to wait for the chips so don't let your food get cold. stay ahead of the curve on that. otherwise this place kills!
i am all about the little mom/pop shop that keeps it simple and good!
This family-run affair is in the sleepy Hamlet of Piru. Now, to call this particular Hamlet 'sleepy' is like calling the prince of Denmark 'sleepy' at the end of the play. Accordingly, this place should be called 'Poncho's Palace' because Poncho is the king of Piru.
Everything is solid, but the tortas in particular are gi-normous and tasty. If you're in the mood for protein and roughage, order the Carl Special (off-menu). A hefty portion of carnitas, salad, and homemade tortillas and you'll be ready for the drive back to civilization (or a light insulin coma). Either way, a good time had by all.
4 Stars for good food and a good price.
1 Star for the ridiculously fantastic service.
The people who work here are so nice its kinda ridiculous. Everything is to make you have a good meal and enjoy the restaurant, I have to give them 5 stars for that. the food was good, and it was the right price (breakfast burrito = $4.99). Piru is a really interesting little town as well, maybe not a destination, but a fun stop to stretch your legs!
