I am a microbrewery fanatic. Â When I travel, I search for microbreweries in advance to include them in my itinerary. Â At the end of a recent trip to Yellowstone and Big Sky, MT, I was driving south through Idaho and hunted for Portneuf Valley Brewery. Â As an out-of-towner with no GPS, I got lost. Â I asked a local if she could direct me and she said "Easy-peasey, I go there all the time!" Â This was a good sign! Â
The hunt proved well worth it. Â My partner and I shared two pints (alas, the remainder of the day's drive to SLC would not allow for more). Â The Twisted Stick Amber was rich and delicious with beautiful color - very smooth. Â Even better was the Grog IPA. Â This beer was crisp and hop-licious, one of the best IPA's I've ever had (and that has been many!). Â As we had just stopped for lunch an hour before, we didn't eat but the menu looked great. Â The service was top notch, our bartender indulging all my questions about the operation, distribution, and the story about brew mistress/owner Penny.
A special nod to bar manager, Luke. Â Upon arriving in SLC that night, I discovered that I had left my camera at the brewpub. Â Knowing I could not make it back that night and still make my flight, I was beside myself. Â I called the brewpub and spoke with Luke. Â He had found my camera and offered to mail it back to me in Florida. Â He even called me the next day to confirm that he had done so. Â He refused to let me reimburse him for the postage, let alone for his kindness. Â I owe him a debt of gratitude for saving my trip pictures and restoring some of my lost faith in the kindness of my fellow man!
Kudos to Penny for making her dream come true. Â The beer is great, the merchandise art work is creative and fun, and the character of her staff is second to none. Â I will be back to PVB next time I'm out West! Â Cheers!!
Excellent beer! Excsllent food! I was in town for a promotional interview for my job and had some spare time to kill after the interview, everyone I spoke to said this place had the best beer in town and excellent food to go with it, gave it a shot and I have been raving ever since! I may make a trip back to poky just for some good beer and great food. I had the award winning belligerent ass nut ale and it goes excellent with pretty much anything on the menu. I had the smothered burrito and took my servers advice and went with the chipotle chicken with the hot salsa, and honestly speaking it was THE best smothered burrito I have ever had, it was cooked to perfection with the right amount of cheese. The chicken had this delicious smoky sweet spicy flavor and was very juicy. And to top it off the homemade hot salsa (green) was amazing! I wish I could get the recipie for it! And probably the best moment was when I saw the owner Penny walk in and I shouted at her to come talk to me and she took the time out of whatever she was doing to talk to me so I could rave about her beer! Keep up the great work penny and all ya'all should visit soon!
Review Source:Have you been upstairs for an event during the summer? I've been to two, and myself and majority of others usually leave within 30-60 minutes. The reason: the HEAT! There's no air conditioner that is turned on and you sit in you sweaty clothes. Don't EVER book an event there if you plan on it lasting very long.
Review Source:I come up to Pocatello several times a year on a one day trip with my wife. We almost always come here for lunch. We like the pizza. The sandwiches are good. The soup not always so good. I suppose this is a brew pub. I get pub food. When I do, it's good. It's great to have a place with character and pretty good beer. I'd love to have a place like this in my area.
The last thing they need is to have anyone plug the dog biscuits. They sell out quickly. They are made from the compressed yeast and our dog loves them. We always get some if they have any.
Craft brewing has matured to the point where one should be able to expect (demand) an excellent product. Well, not so at PVB. I stopped by twice during a recent trip to Pocatello. The first time I had a Pale Ale that had about the same body as club soda. The next time, wanting something a little bolder, I tried the IPA. Blech! Folks, IPA is supposed to have some hop nose and taste.
The food....I ordered a pizza. Not being a fan of thick, doughy crusts I asked if they could make me a thin crust. No problem replied the friendly waiter. What I received was a thick, doughy, underbaked thing that more closely resembled quiche than pizza.
On the up side, everyone working there seemed happy and friendly.
I and several work colleagues were in town for 10 days for work. We found Portneuf Valley Brewing via Yelp and am I glad we did!
There were two vegetarians and at least 6 carnivores; Portneuf had something for everyone. The beer was so good, after I sent my husband a photo of the Midnight Satin I took a growler home for him.
I don't know why others complained about the service; we had terrific servers who recognized us all after the first night. Plenty of food, great atmosphere, and a big asset to Pocatello. If I find myself in Pocatello again, this will be the first place I have dinner.
After ending a magnificent trip to Yellowstone with some fantastic girlfriends, we headed out back towards Salt Lake City and found ourselves stopped for the night in Pocatello. Â After driving through mostly agricultural land and ending up in a small town, we were hopefully but not too expectant about what kind of food and drink we might find here. Â We consulted our trusty yelp, and were beyond pleased to find the promise of microbrew and food.
The atmosphere was pretty chill, fitting with a Monday night in a college town.  Service was friendly and accommodating.  The the grub was standard but tasty - some salads, pizza, soups, sandwiches.  Portions are generous.  I got the Mediterranean salad - A mix of tomatoes, green peppers, feta cheese and red  onion slices, kalamata olives and pepperoncini on a bed of mixed greens with a vinagrette dressing.  The side salads that come with any of the meals are essentially the Mediterranean minus the feta, so seems like getting a meal is a better deal.  We also tasted the Wacky macaroni - oh my, that is good stuff... Not for the faint... Luxurious.  Our third taste was a soup of the day, which was actully rather uninteresting, but came with the tasty salad and what seemed like half a loaf of homemade beer bread - yet again - good stuff.
But, we came here for the beer! Â Drowning our sorrows is the perfect way to end a vacation, and this did not dissappoint. Â We split a couple samplers, which came with 3 oz portions of every beer they had! Â Woo-hoo! Â Prices are VERY reasonable at $1 a sample. Â Each of those platters are $10 well spent. Â There is something for everyone, covering a full range of light to dark. Â I didn't take good enough notes to remember but that night the beer trended more towards the dark and rich, although there were a couple of samples than made our staunch IPA lovers happy. Â I highlty suggest tasting platters for newbies if you are a) not driving or b) have a friend to share with. Â Portneuf Valley Brewing was the perfect way to end a wonderful trip!
I was disappointed by the beer the first time I was here; seemed too malty. The second time i tried the Krystal and it was better. The third time I had the sampler and the IPA tasted much better this time than the first; the Krystal was still good. The food has larger-than-Poky creativity and freshness and I was impressed. One of the better poky restaurants I've been too. There's been live music upstairs every time I've been here which is great. Overall, though, the beer is inconsistent and not amazing.
Review Source:On our way to the university of north Dakota from Los Angeles  so we stopped for the night.  Great local hand crafted beers.  Cool place.  The rust bucket red was an awesome hoppy red lager. Had the burrito with hot sauce .  Very good.  Pizza supremo was truly supremo!  A must stop!
Review Source:i am a big fan of microbrews and was excited to try out Pocatello's local brewpub. Â The beer that i had was "meh." Â Drinkable, but far from transcendent. I had a nut brown ale, which was somewhat watery, and a scotch ale, which also felt underpowered for the style. Â I will try the others and see if one suits me better..
I ordered a chicken curry from the menu. I was disappointed with the quality. Sure, it was yellow like curry, but it lacked any semblance of spice or flavor. Plus, there was celery in it!?! Â really? Â next time, I will order a burger or salad or something.
the atmosphere is good and the service was great, though! It seems like a good place to hang out.
I'm not going to give up on this place, but my first impression was not overwhelming.
I rate this four stars for the beer, and three for the food. Â
The variety of beers is impressive, and there is something for everyone who likes beer. Â They also have great t-shirts designed for each of their varieties of beer. Â I enjoyed the Twisted Stick Amber Ale which was pretty hoppy for an amber ale (tasted more like American ale), and I really liked the season Scotch Ale.
For food, pizza is definitely the way to go. Â I ordered the pesto veggie sandwich and was very disappointed; I ended up stealing from my colleague's pizza which was delicious. Â We also started with the gigantic soft pretzel which is enough for 4 people to easily share!
Props to Pocatello for having a place like this! Â I hope this business is successful and recommend anyone to check it out!
Things I love about PVB:
*The giant salty pretzel
*The vegetarian options
*The support for the musicians in Pocatello
*Housemade beers
*The loft upstairs is great for parties (which i recently had there)
*Penny
*The cute waiter who wears hats and is always on his game
This that are less than stellar:
* It takes forever...9 out of 10 times the service is slow and sometimes off. Â The above mentioned server is good, but other than that, it has always been very slow. Â If you are in a hurry call ahead or go somewhere different. Â
And for god's sake, get the giant salty pretzel. Â It is delicious.
What place has great food, atmosphere and service even when they're at their busiest? Portneuf Valley Brewing does!
Obviously, the main reason for going to a brewery is to have beer, and their beer is really good. I can't speak for any of the lighter stuff, but the Belligerent Ass Nut Brown Ale, Porter, and Midnight Satin were all excellent. Clearly I'm a fan of dark beer (as are my usual beer drinking companions). We all agreed that the beer was excellent. If you are normally a fan of Coors, Budwieser or any of the other crap beers, this may not be the place for you... but give it a try anyhow. You might just find what you've been missing your whole life!
The food is good too. Some items are hit and miss, but the burritos and pizzas are awesome. You can tell the food is prepped and cooked here, not a bunch of pre-made frozen stuff heated up. For this reason, it may take a bit longer to get your food than some people have the patience for. But, it's worth waiting for. Plus, they'll keep the beers coming as long as you keep drinking them, so time passes nicely if you're in good company.
Service is great. Even though it's busy, you will be checked on regularly. The folks that work here are down to earth and fun. Genuinely nice people! I'm loving Portneuf Valley Brewing.
5 Stars for the Beer, which was excellent. Â I had the Krystal Weizen, which I liked a great deal, and the Irish Gold (one of their two seasonals), which was even better.
2 stars for the food/service, which left something to be desired.
I ordered a triple mushroom pizza (meaning a 3 topping pizza, with all of the toppings being mushroom, as I explained to the waitress when ordering). Â I was brought a pizza that had about half of the mushrooms I would expect from simply ordering a single topping mushroom pizza. Â It was OK, but it wasn't what I ordered, and it wasn't what I wanted. Â
I didn't send it back as I didn't feel like going to the hassle (and was quite hungry). Â Plus, since the waitress hadn't gotten the order correct the first time (and had not noticed that my pizza was not as ordered) I wasn't confident in her ability to correct the error.
A note about the pizza dough- it's more of a bread, as opposed to a 'traditional' pizza dough. Â A bit more yeasty, with more of a rise.
We also ordered a giant pretzel, which was not made of pretzel dough (very disappointing!! Â I had been hoping for a big German Style 'Bretzel' to enjoy with my beer), and seemed to be made of the same dough as the pizza crust.
The space has a great ambiance, and it did feel like a little slice of Colorado. Â We didn't have time to stay until the live music started, but it looked like it was going to be a lot of fun.
Stumbled across the brewery while driving through from Salt Lake City back to Montana. We really didn't want to do drive thru so we yelped the area and found this gem! Beer was fantastic and pizza was tasty. Â We opted for the taster spread and enjoyed all the brews. Â Service was great and we enjoyed our pit stop in Pocatello.
Review Source:Their Krystal Weizen is quite possibly the best I have ever had, this coming from someone who lived in Germany. It's a perfect beer, I could have drank just 6 of those for dinner and would have been just as content. Also tried their Pilsner, good, but not as impressive. It was a week ago, but still thinking about that Krystal Weizen...so good!
Their menu was a tad confusing with no real theme, but definitely a selection from large salads, pasta, sandwiches and pizza. In my adventurous way I tried the bun/pork/german thing which I have to say was pretty bland. Put some marinara on it and that seemed to help. Colleague's lasagne looked and tasted amazing. Folks at the table across the way having sandwiches looked pretty content.
Definitely a spot to check out if you find yourself in the area, little out of the way - so you have to drive there - and unfortunately not overdo it unless you have someone with you that hates beer.
ya im easily giving this brewery 5 stars.
nice lil cozy spot in a quiet lil college town/big city
Pocatelo just blocks from where Idaho State University is located
i found this place via nearby restaurant search on yelp
and once i seen that it was a brewery
i was like fk all the other matches
and immediately exited the I-15 freeway
the parking outside was kinda sketchy
not like someones gonna steal the car,
but ur not really sure where u can park
its a cozy little spot with about 6 tables for customers
there's a specials board make sure u read it.
i walked straight to the bar and noticed 9 taps of beer
immediately ordered a sampler of four beers
each sampler is $1 after trying four
i immediately ordered 2 more.
the ones i tried were:
1. bad ass beligerent ale
2. grog IPA
3. a mystic velvet or something
4. the porter
5. Krystal Weizen
and one more i cant remember now
they were all great!!
spoke to the bartender about the beer
and was informed that
they don't ship the beer much anywhere besides locally.
talked about the LA beer craze nowadays and recommended
that they bring some of their shit to LA.
was on an adventure to Craters of the Moon national preserve
and couldn't stay or drink to long so i
checked the menu out and saw that there was two kinds of soup,
chose the Red Death soup.
holycrap it was bomb!!!
a barley/whatever chowder with seafood and veggies.
spicy as hell!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Â excellent!!!
theres a large pizza selection too
as well as something called Nacho Tato
which is a crazy ass stuffed baked potato
will come by again next time i dip to pocatelo
whenever the fk that is
Fast, friendly and professional service. The pizza was pretty decent and our guests liked what they ordered too.
They are a brewery BUT have a small selection of beers! Â I EXPECT MORE! A LOT MORE. ;)
I would like to see not only more beers, but more extreme beers on the menu. Lambics, Double IPAs, guest beers, Imperial porters, etc.! If you are going to be common why not be awesome and common?
It's kind of the same thing as the breweries in west Montana. There will be 6 or 7 beers on the menu and all them them at 7% ABV or less. Sometimes half  of the beers will be 3.5 to 5% ABV. Typical, non offensive common beer styles only...
That's not what a brewery should be! They should push the envelopes of brewing and strive to carve a niche somehow. Hopefully with their beer!
PVB's Grog IPA was the mellowest, thinnest and nearly the flattest IPA I've ever drank. Very little hop flavor. It was good...but like a walk in the park with grandma. I only had one pint as I was in the mood for STRONG beer and I could see that couldn't deliver that night.
If the beer was exceptional, which it was not, (and I wasn't the DD) I would have probably had a pitcher to myself. I will be back to try more though!
I guess they're brewing for the typical, new beer drinker. That may make some business sense but I'd like to use Pizza Port of Carlsbad, CA as an example. They have A LOT of taps. Around 25-30 if I had to make a rough guess. But, they will have some mellow beers at 3.5 to 6% abv and then the other half of the beers will be for your proud beer snob. There is often quite a few 11-14% ABV beers on tap! And guess what? They are flooded with people on the weekend. You may have to wait over 20 minutes for a close parking spot, 10 minutes for beer and nearly an hour for your food!
Plus, they are not that much bigger than the place at PVB!
Having some "extreme" beers for us beer geeks won't hurt anybody!
Better food or beer (or both) would have raised this review up to four or five stars.
The owners need to take a trip to Pizza Port in Carlsbad, CA or Toronado in San Diego and San Francisco . Now mind you, I'm not trying to SoCal-ize Pocatello! BUT, better beer (and more beer) is always a good thing...right? This is a fact for me. I don't care who you are. Toronado in SD is a really small place and a lot/all of their beers are guest beers so PVB has no excuse when it comes to the size of their building! ;)
The employees of this place were friendlier than the employees of PP Carlsbad if that helps clear up my point...
Walk into proprietess Penny Pink's place in Pocatello, and one soon realizes it's got way more than alliteration going for it. Brewing beers and beating bongos give this spot an authentically cool vibe, and whaddaya know, the food and service are great too. Â Don't be in a hurry - Listen to Janis and Jimi while you wait and chill.
Review Source:my family and i had just done an 8 mile trail run and my dad was excited to come and try this place. Â so we walked in at around 4 pm we got a couple blank stares. (it was hot and we had just ran 8 miles so we looked super cute...) we werent sure if we were to seat ourselves and no one really told us until we asked. and then we saw that there was outdoor seating! awesome! Â especially for the nice day. Â my little 13 year brother liked it because it is located next to the trains in the industrial part which was pretty neat.
the menu had a fairly good selection.  they make their own rootbeer and i HIGHLY suggest that you get it. nachos were alright and so was their pizza. pizza was a little too bready...but they make it homemade fresh right there so that made up for it.
i most likely wont be going back there after trail running again.
The Brewery is a great place to hang out in Pocatello! Â I mostly go there to eat the nachos, drink some diet Coke, and listen to the jam sessions on Tuesday nights. Â
This place is pretty progressive for little Pocatello, and probably one of the only cool places to hang out at night.
So, go here! Â It's cool, fun, the staff is nice, laid back, but attentive!
I've had lunch here a few times. Â The service is great and the beer is good. Â The menu, however, is fairly boring. Â I've tried the quesadilla, vegetarian burrito, and teriyaki bowl. Â They were all fine. Just fine, not great or amazing. I thought the vegetarian burrito was especially bland. But it's hard to argue with the price.
Review Source:Super cool place! located in a nice old building, exposed brick walls, microbrewery on premise. I like the atmosphere.
Weird miscue on entry. It sure looked to me like they had a hostess station at the front, so I was waiting for someone to seat me. After an almost uncomfortable wait, a waitress came and told me to sit anywhere. I wonder if I'm the first to make that mistake.
I started off with the Ligerville Lager. It was a bit disappointing. I'm a huge fan of the classic Pilsner style, but this one was just a little lackluster all around. I will say that a true crisp Pilsner is one of the most challenging styles of beer to brew so I will give them credit for trying. A lot of lesser microbreweries just stick to ales and don't even bother with lagers.
For my next beer, I moved to the Belligerent Ass Nut Brown Ale. Whoa, that was good choice. A very nice brew. Rich, malty, and very well balanced for a microbrew. Nice job brewmaster!
I ordered a custom pizza for my dinner. I went with the small (12") as I thought the 8" might be too small. Ended up taking a couple slices home with me. Hmmm breakfast pizza!
The pizza was really very good. Ingredients all seemed to be very fresh. I like that they have a wide range of options for building a custom pizza. I got mine with pepperoni, green peppers, and artichoke hearts.
Overall, a nice time. Service was a tiny bit slow, but not bad. If I lived in Pocatello, I could see myself coming back here a lot.
Visit: 7pm 2/13/10
Pizza and beer after a full day of snowshoeing sounds fantastic, right? Â Well, pizza and this brewery's house drafts turn fantastic into phenomenal!!! Â The service was superb, the pizza was mouthwatering, and after a tasty couple pints of "grog" and Ligertown Lager, I was convinced to give it 5 stars. Â Heck, I even bought 3 of their t-shirts on my way out!
I live in Los Angeles, but having grown up in Montana, this place reminded me of places back home. Â Good eats, great peeps. Â I'll be back on every visit to the Pocatello area!
A great brewery with great food!
I tried their beer sampler, and all of their brews had a great distinct taste! I can't remember which one I liked the best, but all were really great.
For dinner I had their mac and cheese, and it was delicious! They even had some crushed tortilla chips on top of it adding to the flavor!
We had a large party, and the servers were very accommodating!
They even have really great shirts that go with the names of the brews! So if you find one you like, you should get the matching shirt! They're great! Too bad this brewery is all the way in Idaho, otherwise I'd visit more often!
Ahh the Brewery.
Let me start this review by saying that I don't drink alcohol. Â Nevertheless Brewery is a great place to eat!
The food is original, fairly priced, and tasty! I recommend the Salty Pretzel with the cheese sauce... Oh... So good...
Monday is open Mic, Tuesday night is Jam session, and there is always a band on Friday & Saturday!
WOAH! HOLD ON! Â Someone in Pocatello can actually eat and listen to good music. Â Now this place has got class. Â Go eat a pretzel, buy a t-shirt and enjoy!
This is the place for Pocatello.
Service rules, beer is terrible, food is good.
Never had bad service here.
The beers are horrible, they have no alcohol in them. Â The amber tastes like cigarettes in beer. trust me, first hand, I've had that happen at parties.
Food is GREAT, except for favorite of most people, which is the bun thing which has too much fennel.
