What a good steak house. The steaks are always thick, the onion rings are wonderful and the service is always good. Â In the many times I have been here it is easy to see why this is Topeka's best Steakhouse (and it's not even in Topeka.)
Puffy's Steakhouse became a staple of my family when I was a teenager. I can still remember looking at the thick steaks in their cooler on the grocery store side. They have never been terribly fancy which keeps them from being pretentious. It is a mix of a modern day steakhouse mixed with a small town diner.
Easily one of my favorite things of this steakhouse is easily the mountain of onion rings you get for cheap. If you are ordering for two, get the half order. Â The steaks are what you would expect from America's beef belt.
As a pro top, check out the Art Gallery across the street, you will not be disappointed you did!
I looked on Yelp to find a place for us to eat as we were passing through the area. Â We thought we'd give it a try, but honestly should have kept driving on I-70 until we reached Cracker Barrel in another 20 minutes. Â It was quite bad.
Among the 4 of us, we ordered burgers, a steak, and a grilled chicken salad, as well as fries, onion rings, and a baked potato. Â The burgers were good sized, but they were salty, dry and tough. Â The steak had so-so flavor, and had streaks of gristle and was so tough that my spouse had to spit most of it out. Â The chicken salad was okay. Â They used iceberg lettuce with some good cherry tomatoes; I don't remember any other vegetable in there. Â The grilled chicken was ice cold, obviously prepared ahead of time, but it was plentiful and tasted fine. Â I suspect the onion rings were from a bag- they were not crispy at all, but otherwise were okay. Â I can't say anything about the fries except that we've had better ones. Â
Overall, it was disappointing. Â The service was good, though. Â We decided that in such a small town with no nearby competition, they just don't have to try.
Great steakhouse. Â Of course its probably the most well known in the area. Â They do catering also which is quite popular. Â Prices are decent also. Â If you go here and never been before, I suggest ordering your steak one grade more done than normal. Â They tend to cook on the lower side of each grade. Â If you normally eat a medium, I suggest medium-well here.
Review Source:I love this place soooooo much. Â I have been through TWO boyfriends coming to this place in 12 years! Â On Saturday they serve a Prime Rib which is to DIE for....wonderful au jus and horseradish sauce served on the side. Â The steaks and handcut and just wonderful wonderful. Â They serve fried mushrooms, and wonderful onion rings...catfish, fried chicken...and it is all wonderful! Â Come for the steaks though...they are just fantastic. Â This is a great place for couples.
