Love this place. We have been coming here for over 10 yrs. The menu has a lot of options you can eat healthy or have fun and be a little bad. I have done both during my visits here. The RI style Fried Calamari with the hot cherry peppers is awesome, but be prepared.. Very garlicy. Taste great not too strong, but after three pieces of gum. And mouth wash and brushing my teeth twice, the garlic breath went away..finaly. The burgers are good . Just about every fish dish I have had has been great. The drinks are good too. This is a great place to stop after lying out on the beach. Checking out the Mansions and then strolling down Thames Street. Get a seat with a veiw of the street if you can. You can come here in shorts and tshirt and flip flops. Good place to bring the kids too
Review Source:After reading the reviews, I was a little concerned. Â We got there at about 7 and didn't have to wait in line at all. Â Table for 2 was available right near the window.
We ordered the bruchetta and it was awesome. Â I knew, based on the flavors, that we were in good hands.
I ordered the coconut chicken which was spot on. Â Loved it. Â Girlfriend had the mahi mahi and she said it was great as well.
I am a dessert person, but sadly, I was full. Â Very full. Â So we had to skip it. Â I will definitely return as that chocolate peanut butter dessert was calling for me!
I have eaten at Red Parrot several times in the past few years with satisfactory results, hence my return visit today. All I can say is what happened to the Red Parrot that I remembered? If you are an out of town visitor steer clear, my visit today was nothing short of mediocre tourist fare. We ordered quesadillas and nachos that were passable if you don't mind blah cheese between two burrito shells and a tomato based bean glop on top of tortilla chips. The barbecue chicken fingers (it did have a fancier name) was the most disappointing. My 18 year old son said it tasted weird and he was quite correct, we took it home to our dogs. My avocado/spinach salad was probably the most appetizing since it is pretty hard to mess up sliced avocados on a bed of baby spinach, although the salad was room temp rather than chilled. We ate at 4 on a Monday and it took over 30 minutes to get our food; my son also waited 10 minutes for the waitress to come back with his water refill,I can't think of a single reason to recommend this place, and certainly don't intend to go back; what a shame, they recently renovated.
Review Source:This place is HUGE!! Three whole floors! We stopped here on a pre-show bar hop. Had some french fries (yum) and a couple drinks. Splurged big time on the oreo mudslide. WOW. Also had the frozen basil mojito. Basil overload! Tasted like pesto. The service was great at the bar, the whole place seemed well-staffed...and the food we saw coming out looked scrumptious. I'll have to go back for a full meal and post an update!
Review Source:So we were looking fora bar. A lot of places were packed and a lot of places were empty. This place was empty. We were thinking it would pick up a little later but it actually got emptier. Two nights I passed this place and though there were bouncers at the door looking ready for action there was nothing going on.
I didn't eat here. We just sat at the bar for a drink. The hockey game was on. The music was low and very mellow and I was almost bored to tears. This place defiantly is missing out on a huge opportunity to make some serious money in this town, great location.
Just visited the Red Parrot over Memorial Day weekend. Great location down town, casual atmosphere- large drink menu. They happily accommodated our group of 6. We shared the steamers as well as nachos to start. The steamers were cooked perfectly and hit the spot! Most of the table got the lobster BLT which was a good choice. Not the best lobster roll I've ever had, but I was not disappointed with my choice. A solid spot if you are looking for a more casual meal with friends or family!
Review Source:At first glance, this place kind of felt like a mill, like they were just trying to get as many customers in and out as possible. The hostesses were kind of short, they told us it would be a 20-minute wait so we went and got a drink at the bar, and then they had a table ready for us within 5 minutes, before we even had a drinks.
But once we were seated our waiter was great. The food was good, nothing spectacular but solid, the wait wasn't long, and we didn't feel rushed at all.
The price was reasonable too, $70 for three drinks, one app and two huge meals.
This place is definitely a good options if you don't have reservations and want something easy downtown Newport.
Husband and I visited this past week for an early supper. Â We were sat at the window which was open a little and gave a great breeze. Â We each had margaritas which were very good. Â Appetizer was chicken wings, very enjoyable. Â We split a margarita pizza that was tasty. Â We had a friendly waitress and were able to take our time while at supper. Â Nice experience and if we visit Newport again would go back.
Review Source:solid service. cool 3 story restaurant! casual atmosphere. gets rather noisy. a more affordable alternative compared to the surrounding restaurants along the pier. reminds me of a TGI Fridays except larger & with seafood. Generous portions. my parents & i only ordered two appetizers and one soup, yet we left quite satisfied & unable to order dessert (admittedly, weve been munching all day).
+ Seafood Stuffed Caps: Mushrooms baked with crabmeat stuffing with horseradish sauce. Surprisingly delicious. though the horseradish sauce was odd. we asked for regular horseradish after.
+ Lobster Nachos. interesting. ordered it more out of curiosity than anything else. pretty yum. & id recommend it for anyone who hasnt tried it. i think i prefer my nachos without lobster - definitely prefer them steamed or baked.
- Clam Chowder. ehhh. too much soup, cream, and butter. too little everything else.
good spot for casual dinner. wouldn't select it for date night or a intimate celebration. perfect for a group of friends - especially if youre looking to grab a drink or two.
My husband and I were really disappointed with the Red Parrot Restaurant.
I think that the biggest reason why we disliked it here is because we were rushed. Â We ordered our drinks, and then ordered our clam chowder. Â We weren't ready to order for dinner- so the girl "gave us a few minutes" or so we thought. Â Within 90 seconds of ordering the soup and drinks, the waitress was at our table with our soup and drinks together. Â We still had our menus in hand and hadn't made a decision in regards to dinner.
When I go to a restaurant, I want at least a chance to to look over the menu. Â I like to enjoy a drink before I start eating as well. We were at a small table so we had to juggle the soup, drinks and menu. Â It sucked.
I ordered the stuffed shrimp- it tasted primarily like bread crumbs.
So my final reason for disliking my experience here is that it is so loud!! There was a drunk girl at the bar, and her voice carried throughout the whole establishment. Â She was so annoying, and again this ruined my dinner...it was early, too...around 730...
This place made me cranky.
If you are spending a weekend in Newport like we did- don't go here. Â It's not a cheap place either. Â It was about 45 per person, and it wasn't worth half of that.
I was in town for my friend's son's graduation from the Naval Academy Preparatory School and we went here for lunch after the ceremony. The service was extremely slow!!! My frozen margarita tasted liked a water-downed icee with no flavor at all. The seared scallops were good but were served with sautéed spinach over a huge bed of white rice and some sort of duck sauce which wasn't stated in the menu description so it wasn't quite what I expected.
Overall, the menu is all over the place, the food was mediocre, and the service definitely left more to be desired. I wouldn't make a return visit if ever in Newport again.
Fantastic! Great location in downtown, Newport. Appeared as a popular and lively restaurant with a bar. Friendly welcoming staff and variety of menu selections. We had cheesy quesadillas baked with sweet lobster, shark steak, and filling clam chowder. First time trying shark steak - not bad at all!
Got there super hungry and left super happy. : )
It was good. Â The server was really sweet. Â We ordered the surf and turf as well as a bowl of clam chowder. My fiancee had serious agita after eating here--not sure where that came from, but he was burping for hours. Â
Slightly overpriced for what it really is, there wasn't too much "surf" in our meal. Â And it was all claw meat, which my fiancee doesn't enjoy. Â The filet was so tender and melted in our mouths. Â The clam chowder was pretty good, too. Â
It was good in the sense that we had to walk maybe 500 steps to get here from our hotel and didn't have to wait at all. Â Plus the view from where we were sitting wasn't bad either!
Having lived in Newport my whole life, I am surprised and a bit ashamed to say I have only been to this establishment twice. It typically is only when I need a change of going to all my regular spots. Both times, I have been seated right away, and the service has been excellent. The most recent time, I went with Saralynn and we got a great view of all of Thames St.
Their food is appetizing, but definitely not the best in Newport. I have had their pizza, and the Fresco Farfelle (Whole wheat pasta sauteed with garlic, olive oil, spinach and cherry tomatoes. Finished off with crumbled feta.) Both dishes were satisfying and of great proportion, I was really happy with it!
I think this is a good place to go if you dont want to wait, and still want the seafood options that some of the more popular places offer. However, there is little to no decoration which makes the establishment feel like they don't really know who they are yet, and that they could really use some interior designing help to help make the atmosphere have more personality.
Came here with some friends because we were in the area. Restaurant is really big suprisingly. I think it had 3 levels. Parking is really hard to find so I parked by the neighborhood and walked over. The wait was about 20min for a Friday night which wasn't too bad. I ordered their cheeseburger. Food was just average nothing really outstanding. My burger came out medium just how I ordered it. Fries were crispy and delicious. However, service was definitely lacking. Took the waitress like 15min to get the bill and another 15min to get it back to us with the credit cards...Wth!! Move faster yo!
Review Source:I think the Red Parrot is consistent in the quality of the food they serve and in the restaurant's customer service. During the busy season (which is basically 3/4 of the year), this restaurant can get packed, and you can expect to wait. My husband and I stopped by most recently on a Saturday evening in March and were seated immediately. Our server seamed very knowledgeable about the menu items and offered great recommendations. I ordered the crab cake sandwich, which comprised of a large crab cake patty (with plentiful crab meat, not batter) in a whole wheat roll. It was also accompanied by the the signature Red Parrot sweet potato fries, which are always cooked to perfection with light salt. My husband ordered the jerk chicken wrap, which he thought was delicious. It was accompanied by your choice of mango salsa and chips or fries.
The food isn't out of this world, but I do recommend stopping by the Red Parrot with family or friends who are visiting Newport.
Do you want to know the insane part? No matter how many times I am sorely disappointed in the service at Red Parrot... we go back. Â I've been to Red Parrot more than I've been any other place in Newport. Â
The first time I went, I was amazed at their menu. It seems like it never ends. Â Right before the start of the season, on a rainy Tuesday afternoon, service was speedy and pleasant. I had a salad and a cocktail that were expensive, but tasty.
That was the last time I've been happy there. Â I'm always waiting 30 minutes for my check. I'm always having to do choreographed dance number to get the bartender's attention. Â I'm always having to ask where my water is that I ordered before my beer. Â
If you don't mind waiting and a bit of attitude from the waitstaff, get the Calamari pizza. I don't know how the Calamari stays crispy, even the day after, but it does! Skip the greek salad which tasted like deep-salted salad greens. Â The Red Parrot Amber isn't worth trying, but the beer selection has enough depth that you have other options.
First two times going there, loved it.third time was not so hot.thursday early afternoon.everything was slow slow slow, and I'm talking about the service.my soda was flat, second one was also, so I ordered a http://lemonade.it was watered down and presented on the table with a slam, as were my refills.my guests drinks were replaced nicely but I was ignored the first refill time!! Â The three way lobster martini didn't taste like lobster at all and was very chewy. tons of items on a huge menu. try the shark bites, they are really good.
Review Source:My fiancée and I usually stop in for lunch when we head up to Newport for a day or two. Food is always very good to excellent. I am not one to knock a good restaurant for a rare case of bad service as everyone has the occasional bad day or maybe their first day.
Every time we stop in there is usually, at most a 15 min wait, but never ends up being that long. The tables are set nice with plenty of space and if we don't feel like waiting the is a bar on the first and second floor!
Always a good stop for lunch/dinner when in the area. Prices are not bad and we have never been disappointed or left feeling like we wasted our money
I've been going to the Red Parrot since I was very young and will always remain a Red Parrot customer. They serve classic American food, seafood, have great salads and sandwiches and good beers on tap. The location is great - right in the center of Newport. Atmosphere is just what you need for a casual lunch or dinner. Good prices too although it has gotten a bit pricier over the years (but what hasn't).
Review Source:On a whim decided to eat here. We had the shrimp and scallops scampi and a the lobster ravioli + red parrot's amber ale. The shrimps and scallops were cooked perfectly. The ravioli was tasty but could have used more sauce. Beer was good too.
The menu is very late, which made me worry, but the stuff we had was good.
Can you be packed in super tight and not be able to move when it is busy? Â Yes. Â Does everything cost at least $5 more than it should? Â Yes. Â Do I still go to the Red Parrot? Â Yes. Â As others have mentioned both the food menu and drink menu are huge and there is something for everyone. Â Most of the time the service is good. Â I've never had issues with the food here either. Â Today we had a quesadilla appetizer and I had a burger and my husband had the fish and chips. Â No complaints on the food. Â My only complaint is that it was so busy and the front area near the windows is packed so tight that the woman sitting behind me and I kept banging chairs.
Review Source:My fiance and I enjoyed a late lunch here in the off-season (November). Despite the "ok" reviews, it was too chilly to walk to the other end of Thames and thought, "how bad could it be?"
We were pleasantly surprised, yes the menu looks old and similar to that of the cheesecake factory, but there was something for everyone. If i had children to feed, this would be a good place to bring them.
We ordered salad, chowder and two appetizers (buffalo calamari and the shark bites). Everything came out quickly and was good, given our expectations. While I wouldn't recommend this place being your special dinner out during a weekend rendezvous here, if you're starving and need a light lunch to hold you over, this is a great spot for it.
Huge menu, blah service, Newport prices. Â Go here for convenience if you're too cold to walk 4 blocks up or down Thames. Â The food is good, but the rest of the experience can leave you wanting more. Â
The avocado burger is a fine, but safe choice. Â Burger appeared to be frozen, but the veggies were very fresh and the bun was legit. Â Typical American fare. Â The lobster nachos are a bit more unique. Â They were in a heavier creme sauce topped with lots of cheese. Â TRP does pass the grade on nacho-making construction - all chips touched the queso. Â With a glass of white wine, it was a nice blend. Â
Newport resident with a diner's card? Â I recommend using it on a lunch (Su-Th only). Â Then you'll know if you're a Red Parrot type w/o breaking the bank.
I've always heard good things about the Red Parrot but finally got the chance to visit last weekend to judge it for myself!
I visited with a few girlfriends on a Sunday afternoon for lunch. There was no wait, which initially surprised me until I realized that this place is enormous - three floors! We went all the way up to the top which was nice because you could enjoy a beautiful view of Newport and the ocean from up there!
We ordered some tasty frozen cocktails to start - not cheap but delicious and quite large - so I think you get what you pay for. I had the Mango Mango Colada which I'd definitely get again. Very refreshing and smooth, with just the right kick of booze.
For lunch, I had a really hard time deciding what to get. The menu is page after page of things that sounded more and more delicious! I settled on the coconut shrimp wrap, and I am very happy with my decision (although I had a LITTLE bit of buyer's remorse when I saw my friends' Â "Monsta Lobsta BLT"!!) The portions were all good sized and prices were fair for Newport.
I can't wait to go back and try more things at the Red Parrot!
Girls day landed us at the Red Parrot for lunch. Â My whole family is from Newport, but I rarely get to enjoy the local restaurants.
I ordered an Oreo Mudslide and the Monsta Lobsta BLT. Â The Oreo Mudslide was delicious. Â Piled with whip cream and an oreo to boot, it was dessert in a glass. Â Not to strong, not weak - just right. A little pricey, be prepared to shell out a $10 bill on that alone my friends.
The Lobster BLT was delicious! Lobster was piled high and falling out the sides of the roll, not sure of the bread but it was yummy! Â The bacon was just like i like it and they served a spicy mayo spread on the side. Â I ate the entire sandwich, the sweet lobster, salty bacon and spicy mayo sauce were just a dynamite combo. Â I can't wait to get another one. Â The sandwich was served with sweet potato fries. Â The fries were a little on the cold side, but that didn't really bother me. Â They were still delicious, not greasy at all!
3 floors - huge restaurant. Â Definitely a great stop - menu is huge and i could have easily ordered everything.
Was up here with my buddy Isaac and we enjoyed a nice non-romantic dinner by the water - and when I mean by the water I say that because this place is not on the water, but near it. Â
First off, having to climb four flights to get to an available table was....breathtaking - literally I couldn't breathe. Â I'm so out of shape. Â I was then underwhelmed by the flatbread and the fact that they forgot my french martini. Â The french martini was good and so was whatever Isaac got. Â Isaac got something he liked, but the winner was my fish - I had the yellowtail sole and it was unbelievable. Â The only thing I didn't like wast he sauteed spinach, which was too oily. Â The key to good sauteed spinish is you boil it in water first, then you put in oil - theirs definately tasted like they put it directly in the oil.
I did like this place though and I would go back if I were in the neighborhood.
Red Parrot has been my favorite stop in Newport for a while now. Food is tasty, portions are huge and service is reasonably fast.
Try their seafood pasta, mussel soup or casadias. Drinks and beer selection is good.
You'll notice that the menu selection is so huge that it's hard to decide!
Overall, a consistent experience and great value for money in an overpriced Newport.
The menu is huge and you will certainly find something to please everyone in your party. That's basically the advantage of The Red Parrot. Also, great location in downtown Newport. (Caveat: parking is an arm and a leg.) I've been here a few times and I can't stay that The Red Parrot is amazing but... the food is good, prices are good and it's perfectly accessible and it's a feeding trough for tourists, haha. Tourists including myself.
I also really liked the sesame-crusted seared tuna. Nom.
I came here for the first time last night and I was very impressed!
We walked in and the host directed us upstairs to the second hostess. We put our name in and she told us 20 minutes. We were seated exactly at 20 minutes after we came in which was nice. What I thought was odd, but smart, is the hosts hold on to something of yours so that you dont just walk out after putting your name in. They take things likes credit card and licenses. You get it back when your table is ready. While we were waiting we got drinks at the bar. It was busy so there wasn't much room to stand. Servers kept coming through with trays of food. That must be difficult.
After our exact 20 minute wait, we were directed upstairs to the third floor to a third host. Although it took a little long for our server to get there, he was definitely worth the wait. Greg was our server last night and he was absolutely amazing. Very professional, and knowledgable of the menu. His service was prompt and the food came out right away. We started with the thai spring rolls. It came with a dipping sauce which was so good! I ordered a greek pasta and my friend ordered the teriyaki salmon. He literally inhaled his salmon because it was so good. I also had two glasses of pinot noir with my dinner, and Greg was very good with recommending them.
The only thing that seemed a little odd was that the servers wearing a black dress shirt with a tie and black shorts. Classy on the top, casual on the bottom? Hm?
A Saturday night in August and it was not very busy. Â But we had the worst, slowest service ever. Â And not just our server, other tables had to get up and look for their server!
Because It was not busy, I felt there was no need for an order of wings to take over a half hour to arrive. They were tasty when they finally made it to us.
Food is not remarkable. Â Frozen burgers, small shrimp cocktail.
Walk down the street, there has to be better.
The binder menu chock full of page protectors a la 5th grade should have been our first sign to exit the building. The lackluster service and strange outfits (black shirt with a tie and shorts, wtf?) could have been another indication to run for the hills. Nevertheless, after spending the last 2.5 hours climbing along the Cliff Walk in extreme heat, our choices for dining in Newport were limited. Drenched in sweat and dressed in our not so fine attire and wanting a cold drink, this was our only immediate option.
The menu had a lot of options, but nothing stood out to me. It was reminiscent of The Cheesecake Factory menu that goes on and on, but nothing is really appealing at all. We ordered the nachos to start, I ordered chicken and steak fajitas,my fiancé ordered fish and chips and my sister ordered a chicken sandwich. The nachos came quickly with about a cup of sour cream dumped on top. Really?! Who wants a huge mouthful of sour cream? Not me! Besides that, they were decent.
The food arrived quickly, yet left us wishing we dined elsewhere. My fajita meat, onions and peppers were floating in a disgusting amount of oil. Why the food would even be cooked in this amount of oil is beyond me, but being served like that literally turned my stomach. Definitely made Chili's look like fine dining. My fiancé was equally disgusted with his fish and chips noting it was definitely frozen and tasted mushy. Blech! My sister's sandwich looked a mess and she was equally as disappointed.
Horrid food, so-so service and a rip-off! Keep walking...past this restaurant!
They're the classic huge menu of poorly prepared food.
The first time I visited this establishment I actually had a decent meal. The burger was great and actually cooked correctly (medium- warm with pink and some red). However, every time I have come back following my first visit, it has been nothing but a disappointment.
The atmosphere is actually really nice. I like the 3 stories and each level has it's perks and nice views.
The service here is not the best. We just recently stopped for a quick lunch, which turned to almost 45min and the place wasn't busy at all.
Food has been inconsistent and this past visit last Sunday gave us more of the same. I got a basic cheeseburger and my fiance got the Cajun chicken. The burger was ordered medium and came well done. The chicken was dry and not even that warm. We would have complained but since it took a half hour to get the food and the server was nowhere to be found we decided to let it go. Then we just sat waiting for another 15 minutes before getting the bill. I don't know how obvious you have to be when you're done eating but we were clearly finished. We did the whole leaning back push plate toward the middle thing.
Overall, I say that Red Parrot is a good place to go when it's late and people have started closing their kitchens. Otherwise, don't waste your time and go to Brick Alley or one of the bars on Broadway. It's only a 5 min walk!
Swedish Fish drink is my favorite! Frothy pink greatness. This is one of my favorite places to go for comfort food. I honestly only get the nachos (unless there is a good Facebook Deal) and then a salad because they drench the tortilla chips in the classic toppings so it makes me feel better to get some greens in there.
Remember to 'Like" them on Facebook to get some special outrageously cheap. deals! With the "password of the day" you can get things like their Sicilian pasta or Mahi-Mahi Sandwich for $0.99 ! Just for saying something like, "Luke, I am your father!" and buying a regular priced beverage! WOO!!
