It's just that: A shed, painted red, with beer inside.
Enjoy cheap Lonestar, good specials, vintage boobies on the wall. The back area is strewn with lights and plenty of seating... There's a stage where I have never ever once even seen a band even threaten to play a single note of music. But the stage is there. So that's cool.
I've seen the likes of "The Boondock Saints" and some movie where piranhas had invaded a lake to eat all the naked girls on the TV behind the bar.
Super casual, kinda divey. The kind of bar I'd expect to find my grandma in.
You don't know my grandma. That means it's cool.
i really like this bar now that i know where it is. I get a lunch box (lonestar+shot of Jameson) for only 5$, hell yes. The pool tables inside are 1$, the giant patio is great when its not cold and raining.
Via 313 is outside to take your orders, or deliver it inside to you.
I will frequent this bar.
WOOT #200
Great local drankin' spot! Great jukebox, great patio and great beer selection and super cheap too. Oh, and they always have great happy hour specials. Me likey specials : )
This is the kind of place you can bring your Hula Hoop and go to town! A few of my gals and I come here for ladies drankin' night and always have a great time. The bartenders are friendly and quick. It's just a really low key South Austin kind of place and it is always on my rotation.
A small but cute place. Â I good place for bikers. Â Although we didn't drive my friend's motorcycle this night. Â The staff wasn't all that friendly and the crowd was weird. Â You can tell a lot about a place from the crowd. Â They had a pool table or two and they dont serve food so don't go looking for it. I like the huge backyard with the stage and picnic tables. Â I heard they have good bands. They have another bar back there that wasn't opened. Â I didn't stay out there for long because of the smokers. Â In fact, I didn't finish my drink. Â I wanted to leave. Â Maybe I would get better results on another night, but this night it was just wasn't happening.
Review Source:The jukebox was banging out music from Purple Rain to smooth Jazz, to basically all music I love that doesn't suck.
The bartender was totally cool about that "$10 minimum on CC charges" Cause I only wanted one drink and I don't carry cash. I am not a normal person and cash makes me nervous.
They serve strongbow, which is by far my absolute favorite cider even if it is in a can.
The patio area is great because my BF and I just sat out there chatting like a couple of dorks and working on a crossword on my phone. Cause thats what couples do at bars, crosswords. Its right in the area I like to be in and conveniently located on S. Congress Ave.
You are no dive bar, but I can get away with wearing yoga pants and a hoodie which I like a lot.
Next time I will explore your innards and see what goodies you have on your walls.
We recently moved further South and have been on the look out for a neighborhood bar, and just might have found one. We went here the other night for the first time and it was comfortable and fun.
The jukebox music was awesome and the crowd was very laid back. Â I enjoyed the outdoor area and would love to make it a regular hang out in the summer. We ordered pizza from the trailer outside, Via 313, and it was awesome- they delivered the pizza inside the bar and we enjoyed it with our drinks.
Overall, Red Shed is super fun and laid back. The only thing that would have made it better is if they had beers on tap.
Reconstruct an old building, throw some gravel in the back, hang up Bettie Page and all her friends inside and polish it up squeaky new and you have Red Shed! Â
Red Shed is one of my favorite neighborhood bars it is on Congress, that is South people, you know, past all the cool stuff right down the road from the pick and pull. Red Shed has it all, plenty of space outside, a nice gravel area with picnic tables, tables with chairs, washers and the music is properly filtered outside so you can still hear it even at the farthest table.
The drinks are reasonable, they have a good selection of brews, I am not sure about their liquor selection but it looks like there is a nice variety. Inside there are a few places to sit, a couple of booths and some bar stools at the bar but its mostly taken up with pool tables. That is fine by me, all the action is outside anyway. The bathrooms (well the ladies anyway) are always clean.
The only reason I am not giving dear Red Shed five stars is their lack of live music. They have this awesome Barn stage in the back and you just know it would be amazing to see a live show there but I have never even seen it open! So that is my only beef Red Shed, lets get some bands down here, whaddya say?
Red Shed is like hanging out in your buddy's backyard. It's chill, there's always good music playing (thanks to their jukebox), and the drinks are decently priced.
AND they have Strongbow, which on a summer's eve, is delicious while I hang out and watch my friend's play washers.
Their food trailer is different every time I go there, I'm just happy they have the option to get some grub if I'm hungry.
The crowd here is great, if you're looking for somewhere to just hang out and relax, Red Shed is the spot.
We've been frequenting the Red Shed Tavern for quite awhile now & is a favorite whenever we're barhopping on SoCo. Great atmosphere, good drink specials, & the jukebox has some variety (as long as it isn't the same person selecting the various Salt 'n Peppa hits I hear most times I stop by).
We moved to Kyle recently, so now we frequent the Red Shed even more because their location (South Congress/Slaughter) is the closest South Austin bar to upper Hays County that's NOT a family restaurant. That alone gives the place 5 stars in my opinion!!
I would have given them 5 stars but Spartan Pizza is gone and they keep unplugging my high scores from Photo Hunt.
This is my favorite bar in South Austin. Â You can play pool, dominoes, card games, connect four, etc.
Thursday night is the night to be here since they have a Dub Reggae DJ and his girl brings hula hoops! Â It's a blast!
Oh, this place has a great mix of your South Austin Folk. Â You'll encounter bikers, rarely see hipsters and just laid back people.
Don't forget to bring your ID, but if you do, get there early enough when they're not carding at the door ;)
P.S. Â Don't let your friends pass out on the toilet, it's difficult to get them out of there!
I've been to Red Shed many times since they first opened, and I must say, this place rocks. They have interesting music in the jukebox, different from the typical boring pop and classic rock fare you see at many places.
Even cooler, RST is one of the only places in Austin where you can hear DJs spinning dub on a weekly basis, not to mention the list of bands and other DJs who play here regularly.
The owners rock! Anyone who saw this bar before they took over will understand what a transformation it went through when they came in. The building was literally falling apart, and typical patrons were leery to step foot in it due to the VERY rough crowd.
Now, the crowd is mixed, including some of the old school folks as well as a whole new faction of Austin. It's a true neighborhood bar with a "real" bar attitude. And everyone gets along.
Cheers to Andy and Kelly for a job well done. Ignore the naysayers, this place is great.
We have friends that know just about every local joint in the SoCo area. They hadn't tried the Red Shed Tavern, so I jumped at the chance to suggest it. It is really hard to miss if you're not looking for it, so pay attention! It doesn't look like much, so I wasn't expecting much.
We walked in and it was very dark. There was a pool table on the left in it's own little room and one on the right as well. We chose one of the 3 booths, but could have sat up to the bar (about 10 stools - I think). It's not a big place, but clean with friendly waitstaff. I wasn't sure what kind of beer to try and our waitress gave me a couple choices throughout the night and they were all pretty good. The juke box was the music and it was a little loud. The bathrooms were big and clean. There was a mix of people, but it seemed to favor the 30+ crowd. We didn't check out the back, but from pictures it looks pretty nice. I think if we were in the area, we'd try it again.
I finally made it here. A friend who lives close by raves about this place and I finally had a chance to check it out yesterday.
We got there shortly after it opened and had the place to ourselves. No one was there to watch the UT game. The band was loading up. We sat outside and enjoyed the breeze. We went there for the $2 online Tecates as advertised online. Despite it being advertised they have canceled that special and I was charged $3. Not pissed but disappointed that the bartender didn't step up and do the right thing.
I wish I was here to enjoy it with a group and with a crowd. The band stage looks cool. Lots of room outside and inside is just feels comfy. MNF has $1 Lone Star drafts and free hot dogs. We were too early for Spartan to be opened up yet but the dude swung by and dropped off menus. They look good.
I am glad I finally went I will definitely be back for some fun.
This was an awesome place! Â Went there last night for a friends birthday. Â Probably the best smelling bar I have ever been to. Â Prices were great, bartenders were friendly, and I was told that the bathrooms were nice too. Â How often to do you think a bathroom at a bar is nice? Â I thought to myself, this is the first time i have ever thought a bar smells spectacular. It is near the area i hang out and plan to go back to in the future.
Oh yeah and they played AWESOME tunes!
Dr Fredo and I walked in here to get a couple of beers and wait on our Spartan Pizzas. Walking in from the daylight made everything seem extra dark.
I glanced around and noticed Bettie Page or similar pictures on the walls and a baseball game on the TV. Odd mix, I thought. We ordered a couple of beers and that's when I noticed the back patio! Out we went to explore.
It's a really nice set up out there. Very clean, easy to walk around. Some of the wooden picnic tables feel unsafe to sit on for both me (a large guy) and even Dr Fredo (a skinny fellow). We quickly moved to the metal chairs and tables and enjoyed a breezy time drinking a few beers. We made it through two each while awaiting the delicious Spartan Pizza.
The stage was closed, but still looked great. Hope to see some music out there sometime. I believe it was on Thursdays the bartender said they had a reggae DJ. Sounds fun to me!
So I walk up to the bar and ask for a bourbon and coke and the kinda scary looking bartender is pouring it and I'm looking at the glass and I'm looking at the glass and I'm looking at the glass. Why? Because there's half an old/used sugar packet floating around in the bottom of it. I tell him, "Uhh... hey, there's a used sugar packet in my drink, can I have a different one?" He takes the drink, pushes it in front of this drunk guy at the bar. The drunk guy downs the drink, sugar packet and all and the bartender pours me a new drink wo/ saying a word.
I was fine with all that.
This place was recently redone and the ladies who run this place are doing a great job. In fact, while I was there drinking my non-sugar packet drink they brought in an old truck tire that was painted red, threw some gravel and plants in the tire and wa-la! It looked cool. The jukebox is great and the outdoor seating can rival any bar. Old school cigarette machine and clean bathrooms = extra points.
It's a trek south if you don't live in the area and I imagine when they start  having live music on the wonderful looking new stage this place will slowly become a south Austin favorite.
Also, they don't serve food, but Spartan Pizza is right next door in case you get hungry.
My girlfriend and I wanted an easygoing place to catch a drink after our workout (I've read that beer hydrates better than water, i swear) and this place happens to be right next door. I'd bookmarked it at some point, so we decided to wander in.
It was pretty dark inside, but not dingy. Gleaming pool table off to the right and a couple of arcade games (Mrs.Pac-Man!! Pinball!) is what stood out. As mentioned, not a ton of seating, but we were headed for the patio.
Stopped at the bar where the only two other patrons were parked. They had two TVs with Richard Prior standup on one, NCAA basketball on the other. Solid. We both were excited to see Strongbow so we each nabbed one ($4.50 - not bad, I believe it was happy hour) and headed out the door.
The patio is quite large and it certainly doesn't seem like you on are S.Congress. Everything is "fenced" off and quite nice. There is a stage that was closed off on one end - I would certainly return as it appears to be a pretty awesome place to come out and hear some tunes. there are a few heaters but it was nice enough we didn't bother to ask to turn em on. There was a couple at one of the picnic tables, but otherwise the place was ours. (I was surprised, from the reviews I thought it'd be a bit more happening.) We sat down, broke out our post-workout snacks and got into it.
I didn't realize it was silent until a single random song burst over the sound system (Bruce Springsteen). Huh? It was followed by a single Prince hit 45 minutes later. Interesting. Dunno if there is a jukebox or what the story is there.
Our interaction was brief but the staff was friendly...and the lady at the pizza trailer next door brought us a menu "just in case." Wish I'd tried it - but my girlfriend is also one of my coaches, so that wasn't gonna fly. Boo.
All in all, I dug it here. In fact, this place is in danger of being invaded by Crossfit Austin next door, I hope they are prepared.
I'm going to start off by saying I HATE dirty 6th, and the crowds, and all the frat boy douches. I have grown to love the part of 6th east of 35, but it is slowly being invaded by the dirty 6th crowd. I will gladly frequent any east side bar Sunday through Thursday (Sunday and Thursday themselves are becoming a bit iffy)
So today me and a friend set out to find a bar which we could tolerate on a Friday night. We picked Red Shed because it was close to his place, but far enough from downtown to be safe from the army of greeks.
So we show up, didn't have much interaction with the barstaff, but they took our order quickly, were nice enough, we didn't have to wait long, and they got our order right. I'm fine with a bar staff that isn't extremely social, as long as they get my drinks reasonably quick, give me what I order, and are reasonably polite.
They had an excellent selection of beers, especially beers from local Austin breweries, all at reasonable prices. The also have the usual amenities, a few pool tables, a few arcade games, a pinball machine, but the real highlight for me was the Jukebox. Most jukeboxes tend to have 2-3 genres of music, of mostly standard music. This jukebox had a little of everything, and I was truly impressed, I didn't see a single band or album which I thought I would be unable to tolerate.
The patio also seemed nice, not much of a benefit because I'm not smoking at the moment, but it seemed to have plenty of space and tables, as well as a few heaters which was nice. Seemed like a nice enough place to enjoy a beer while smoking.
All in all I can see myself drinking here again, maybe not the perfect bar, but one I can most definitely see myself visiting again, frequently, especially between Friday and Sunday.
(I also have to note that I love that the little survey is asking if this place is "Good for Kids")
This bar is officially my new Friday and Saturday bar. Its got a nieghborhood feeling without the popped collar douche bag who wondered in there asking "hey man, you know where I can score some roofies" like you catch on the east side now.
The staff was not like wow they are friendly but they were good enough to make me leave without being pissed off. I am about to tell you something that will blow your mind. They have... get ready.... a Last Action Hero Pinball Machine! Thats right, that little gem from the early 90's has a pin ball machine and its inside this bar. And to top it off they have one of the best jukeboxes I have ever seen. It has at least one song you will like.
The patio was all like "what?!" and I was like "hey this patio is like awesome!" Its hands down a great patio that has plenty of seats and what looks like an awesome stage.
You will now offically see me in this bar on fridays and saturdays because:
1. They have strongbow.
2. No douche bags.
3. Awesome Jukebox.
4. Awesome patio.
5. Nice staff.
I will say this though, their was a person messing with a taser while they were drunk. I am sorry but if you own a bar you need to get that out of your bar because it made multiple people state that it was uncomfortable. Thats all you need is some drunk tasing people.
I really liked this place. Went for a board meeting and they even turned the music down for us!
The food was incredible (biscuits with bacon gravy people!), service impeccable (thanks Kendra) and i love the modern funky atmosphere. Â
It's nice to have something south that isnt TINY. Â I can already see this becoming a fave with my southie friends and will probably end up there for a game or two as well.
RST is great place to enjoy yourself with friends. I visited the local two times and both times the service was great. They have new airstream selling pizza which I have not try yet but I will. The beer prices are cheap and there is good selection. Â
You have to love the back patio, specially during the summer when it is not that hot. Â the atmosphere is very laid back and the diverse group visiting the place make it excite.
I seem to remember this place not even five years ago as the kind of scary, dive-bar even the hippest hip kids with the best trust funds wouldn't step their foot in. Â
Actually, do you remember "Pee Wee's Big Adventure" where Pee Wee goes in that biker bar and is forced to dance for his freedom? Â This place was a lot like that back then--lots of Harleys and about 20 years overdue for a paint job. Â
Well, something happened over the years: Â That old biker bar closed and Red Shed took it's place. Â And, I have to say, the transformation is really incredible. Â The outdoors area is, quite possibly, the best part of the place. Â It's attractive in a shabby chic sort of way and quite inviting to the point that you will end up ordering another drink even though your watch is telling you its time to go. Â
For all that's good, there's only one real negative: Â All their beers are bottled, so if you're a draught snob, you'll have to suck up your pride and drink out of the bottle or go elsewhere. Â
Overall, Red Shed is a fantastic place to have drinks with some friends and another great addition to the South Austin bar scene.
Best bar I have been to in South Austin!
-great jukebox ; first time I went there they had some jawbreaker playing.
-excellent drinks
-real nice bar tenders.
-fun/interesting regulars
I first went there a few weekends back with my brother and I have been back there every weekend since.
A friend called me tonight and said her moped had died on the way to meet friends at the Red Shed Tavern, and asked me if I'd come get her (and the bike) in my pickup.
I'd never been there before; we stayed for awhile and had a few beers with the group she was meeting. Â It was a nice, comfortable place. Â We sat outside, talked, and enjoyed the weather. Â I'll go back when there's some live music.
I really like this place. Its my favorite new place to go here in south Austin!
The patio is amazing, its nice, clean and spacious! By chance we caught a live dj there a few nights ago and it was a great surprise!
I highly recommend this place for when you want to have a fun, relaxing night out with your crew!
I am so happy to have found a bar within minutes of my house that doesn't suck. Sorry, but the Little Woodrows on Slaughter just doesn't do it for me. Great beers, but the atmosphere there ain't my thing. I do enjoy Sam's Town Point, but I'm not always in the mood to come back home wreaking of smoke. So a week ago or so, a friend recommended the Red Shed. How had I not heard about this place yet, especially being less than 5 minutes from my neighborhood!
When we pulled up, it was obvious that parking was a bit of an issue. Fortunately, they opened up the lot behind the bar for us to get our cars off the street. Problem solved.
The bar itself is awesome, with a great selection of bottled beers - everything from Fireman's 4 to Young's Double Chocolate Stout. The staff was very friendly, and the overall vibe was like that of a great neighborhood pub. The best part was their killer back patio, with plenty of tables and chairs for enjoying these Austin summer nights. The jukebox was quite good as well, playing everything from Frank Sinatra to Radiohead.
Hopefully at some point they'll get some beers on tap, but regardless, I'm making this my new watering hole.
I came here, not knowing where I was going. My friend just kept making me drive. First off the patio, may I say, THAT is a patio. It is like the grandfather of patios. And even though the place was packed, we found a place to sit, again I know, insane right? It was a nice mix of people, even the chicks dressed up like Olivia Newton John jazzercise era made it feel like home. Not that I have Olivia Newton John jazzercising in my living room or anything. That would be cool, but get old quick. Not like this place, this is sure to be a staple in my bar rotation.
The only beef I have with the place is the two seperate chicks restrooms. Really? One toliet each? Right in front of the bar? At least I can order a beer while standing in line
The Red Shed (formerly Beverly's) has about as laid back of an atmosphere as you can without the former bikers passed out the following morning!
New floor, new roof & indoor plumbing... shit howdy if I didn't have a child at home I'd be drinking here a little more often! Â Meranda & Andy have truly rebuilt a gem for S. Austinites to call their second home.
My boyfriend wont get a yelp account, but he insisted on writing the following review for the Red Shed Tavern. Â On a side note, I thought this place was extremely cute, and I'm glad that there's a local place to go that's south of William Cannon.
"I moved to austin 10 years ago after visiting this city numerous times and bathing in the waters of Steam Boat, South Park Meadows, Empanada Parlor and The Backyard. Â Now all my venues are gone. Â Those places had a certain laid back, have a beer, enjoy life and dive into the friendliness and magic that only Austin and certain venues can provide.
To my surprise, nevertheless in SOUTH AUSTIN, I have found Austin again. Â I just stopped by for a beer and to check out what this place could offer and I loved it! Â This is Austin, this is why I moved to this city.
Thank you Red Shed Tavern for opening in South Austin! Â I can't wait to see local and traveling artist in this venue. Â I can't wait to start planning my weekend based on the artist and events that will happen at this place."
I wanna take Red Shed Tavern home to my bed and snuggle it. Â
After my first visit I was giddy with delight. Â Red Shed has some room to grow, (draft beer on tap), Â but I see a deep relationship in our future. Â Plus they have a sweet long happy hour.
Thank you so much for opening south of Ben White. Â You do not know how much we need decent bars to drink in. Â
The girls bathroom is adorable!
Hooray! I'm smitten with this new edition to the tiny existing selection of South side watering holes. Let's face it: if you live south of Ben White, it's hard to find a place to have some drinks with friends that really feels comfortable. The owners are two charming ladies who've lovingly fixed up the place. Highlights: peaceful little backyard with pick nick tables for nice evenings or if you wanna light up, brand new jukebox with a wide selection of tunes, spacious, clean restrooms, and CHEAP booze.
One star deducted for no beer on tap. Hopefully they'll fix that soon, because I really like my Lonestar served up draft-style.
Adding to other reviews: Food trailer in the parking lot has excellent Brisket (didn't try others) and two sides for $7. Â Tacos for $2.50. Â You are welcome and encouraged to bring food into Red Shed.
Beers are reasonable with good selection bottles/cans, Guinness pint cans for $4. The outside patio is beautiful, similar to the new Gigerman location. Â I liked the mix of booths next to the bar. Â Pool table in side room.
The room isn't the greatest for live music. Â The walls reflect sound too much, I had to improvise some earplugs... but I know most people in Austin like it LOUD.
So, the Red Shed... It's--wait for it--a red shed! Get it?!
It's super cute. Yes, I just called a former biker bar "super cute." It's very small, dark and intimate inside. There's not tons of tables, and only two or three booths. They don't have any beer on tap (yet?), but do have a few selections of the good stuff in bottles, mostly from Texas (yay!). They have a full bar, and I hear they have wine as well. Â There's also a pool table and an awesome juke box, ranging from Donovan to Beastie Boys, Billie Holliday to Elton John.
The outside is awesome! It's very nicely laid out, with a myriad of types of tables and get this--a big barn looking thing (or maybe another red shed??!) where they will eventually have musicians perform. Â Some of the tables have umbrellas and there seems to be shade from trees.
They don't open until 4:00, but they have Happy Hour until 8:00.
The bartenders (owners?) were super nice and friendly. Â I definitely see myself here a lot--especially outside!
This might be the best thing to happen to South Austin. They have only been open a day and I have only been in there for 1 beer, but I already love it. Its a simple, clean neighborhood bar with an awesomely huge patio. There is a nice stage and I can't wait to sit out there on warm summer nights and listen to live music.
After going to Malverde this weekend, I was beginning to worry that all the new bars in Austin were getting too fancy and too expensive. Then Red Shed Tavern came along and restored my faith in Austin bars.
Even though I am being overly enthusiastic and giving this place 5 stars, there are a couple of things I think they could do to make it even more spectacular. 1. Add a few more beer flavors (Flying Dog Tire Bite, anyone? Hint, hint) 2. Offer a couple of moderately priced wines for the vino lovers the way Scoot Inn and Longbranch do.
Even of they don't mess around with the formula, I kind of love Red Shed Tavern just the way it is.
One of the reasons that I'm certain that there are local businesspeople with more chutzpah than I is the reemergence of several dodgy bar locations into new, improved, and cooler bar locations. Case in point is the Red Shed Tavern, a tawny south side joint bathed in warm tones, featuring a worthwhile jukebox and one of the better patios I've seen in many moons.
Anyone who had driven past the prior incarnation of this place would recall it as I had, namely, a sketch-tastic uber dive biker enclave that seemed as likely to get closed down for something nefarious or go up in flames. It was great people watching from a distance, but that was as close as most of us went. Suffice it to say those days are long gone, and how.
The feature of Red Shed Tavern really is the patio, a spring and summer-friendly setup with a huge stage out back. Word is that they're wrangling with some sound ordinance issues, but assuming they can get those handled, this new neighborhood stop should be settling into tunes soon. And I, for one, may well be there.
