So my coworkers And I went for dinner. Service was a bit slow. We all had the NE clam chowder. It's more like a soup than a chowder but the menu does say creamy. I was dissappointed in the ceasar salad...it's supposed to be made with Romaine not iceberg lettuce. For the main dish I had the ahi tuna. It was fantastic. The pineapple salsa added that extra pop in your mouth that made the evening.
My co-workers had the duckling and the shellfish over linguini. They too raved about their meals. So my recommendation is skip the apps because they were a little disappointing and go for the main dishes...they are great.
I gave only 3 stars due to the service and apps.
If you're under 75, don't visit reds. The food is edible-- nothing memorable though. It is difficult to find healthy food options and most dishes are laced in butter sauce. I had the Hot and Sweet Ahi Tuna which was OK. Definitely wasn't hot and was lacking in the flavor department.
Overall, I didn't dig the vibe. This is place is tailored toward a very old crowd. There are reading glasses and shawls for loan!
I'm not a fan of Reds, but your grandparents might appreciate it.
The brunch is outstanding. Â Lots of selection and everything is fresh out of the kitchen (it was extremely busy... so things were turning over quickly - it'd have to be fresh)... never a wait for a replenished dish, etc... Â
I celebrated my parent's anniversary there on a Sunday brunch. Â The staff was very accommodating to our large group (we made a reservation) and they let us take out time, etc...
I haven't been there for dinner in years... but my parents always rave! Â They love it. Â Quality and fair prices. Â A local institution.
Lunch at Red's was very nice. It was a quiet Saturday, only a couple other tables were occupied. The server was friendly and very attentive. We had a house chardonnay and shrimp cocktail for starters. They were both good. For lunch, my wife  had a Mahi Mahi sandwich and I had a salmon burger. They seemed to be frozen patties that were a disappointment for a place that brags about being a seafood place. However, the rolls were exceptional and the fries were good. All in all, we would go back but we would ask more questions prior to ordering.
Review Source:If you want great seafood down at the 9W/Hudson river area, this is the place to go. The food is great, the service is too. The style is good, old fashioned homey in a 1940/50ish kind of way. My wife and I go there at least 4 to 5 times a month and we have never been disappointed. I highly recommend this excellent restaurant!
Review Source:REEEEEDS RESTAURANT!
This place has the old school feel, but I just love this place. Â As a new Greene County resident, I really appreciate reds restaurant. Â They serve mean salads, some awesome specials and have an absolute off-the-chain breakfast buffet on Sundays. Â The management and staff are always wonderful.
I know folks think that this place is out dated. Â Perhaps it is. Â However, I feel that Red's is an icon in the Coxsackie community. Â I do family events at Red's or even just stop by to hang with my friends after the gym. Â Of course my husband and I like to frequent Red's for some quality time.
Don't knock Red's. Â It's good food and good people. Â It's that simple.
I'm not surprised there's only 5 reviews for Red's so far. It's not trendy or hip; it's strictly old fashioned. They tend to get an older crowd and it's a little far from the center of population. I am surprised at the low ratings. Anyway here goes :
Food - 5 stars.
In spite of a previous dissenter, I love the soft shell crabs here in season. Salmon is great. Ceasar salads are great. So is the house salad that comes with dinners. Lobster is great here. And the prime rib is the best in the capital district; it's the only place I know where you can get it bone-in. The seasonings on the outside of the prime rib give it a tasty, delicious crust. The rice pilaf and veg that came with the rib were realy good too. There is  a seafood linguini dish that's very good. The menu offers duck and other interesting choices.
They have a nice craft beer selection in bottles which, unfortuantely are kept way too cold.
Ser vice - 5 stars.
Atmosphere - 5 stars.
Interior is right out of the fifties with wood paneling all around and red naugahide booths and chairs. I love the  piped in jazz from the forties and fifties.
This restaurant is another chef-owner deal with Joe in the kitchen and his wife Kate overseeing the front of house. As I've mentioned in my other reviews, that is a big plus.
So why do I give Red's 4 stars overall? In the colder months (which is more than half the year in this area) they keep the thermostat set too low in the dining room. Yes, the owner will boost the heat up if I request it but then it takes time for the room to warm up. By then, food is arriving and getting quickly cold.
This is a big pet peeve of mine and so I Â take away 1 star.
Red's has been open since 1944, and I think my grandparent's have been patronizing them since that time. Â Whenever we have a family "occasion," 9 times out of 10, it's at Red's. Â The decor is classic steakhouse/seafood joint, kind of dimly lit, dark wood, glass, lots of red (shocker!) Â The building looks small but is much bigger from the inside! Â
This time, we were a party of 17, we were seated in the bar area. Â Our table was actually two together, and we all had ample space! Â No wobbly, uneven table at all, and the chairs are really comfortable. Â Our waitress, Kat, was constantly smiling and very pleasant, but not annoyingly so. Â When she didn't know an answer to our questions, she said "I'm not sure, but I will find out," and did. Â THANK YOU! Â
Here is my major problem with Red's, which isn't even an issue for someone who doesn't have "decision issues." Â There were FOUR menus. Â We were there at 2 o'clock. Â On the table were the lunch menu, dinner menu, prix fixe menu, and "featured items." Â This does not include the daily specials board! Â I was overwhelmed, I literally had to look over and eliminate entire menus before I could reach a decision....and I don't even eat seafood!! Â Most of the menus had NOTHING that I would eat on it, and I still had a hard time making a decision! Â
I ended up getting tortellini carbonara (against my no-pasta-at-restaurants rule, but there wasn't much else for me). Â It was fine, the dallop of marinara was DELICIOUS and I wished that I had just gotten tortellini and marinara, because that would've been delightful, but my dinner was fine. Â Nice portion size, not HUGE, but I couldn't finish, which is a good amount, in my opinion.
I tasted my mom's penne with butternut cream sauce, which was my second choice. Â It wasn't butternut-ty at all. Â My husband got one of the featured items, a sausage stuffed chicken breast with cranberry sauce (not like Thanksgiving cranberry sauce...a thin sauce, maybe it was cranberry and port?)...he DEVOURED it. Â I got to sample the cranberry sauce and it was fantastic. Â The fresh vegetable with most of the dinners was pureed fresh squash, which everyone raved about! Â We did comment that something that looks so much like baby food was the fresh vegetable, but it was so good, nobody minded. Â
Lastly, the coffee was delicious. Â Our ever wonderful waitress Kat only brought us fresh pots. Â Smart girl!
We were staying at a nearby Holiday Inn in West Coxsackie, so we decided to try the nearby Red's Seafood Restaurant on Rt. 9W.
I guess we didn't want to acknowledge the obvious disconnect of a seafood restaurant located in a land locked and "un-gentrified" upstate New York location. We had attended a "Lamb & Pig Roast" the evening before ... so I couldn't stomach another slab of meat.
Suffice to say, the Soft Shell Crabs Meuniere "special" at Red's tasted as if the poor crabs had crawled all the way from the Atlantic Ocean to West Coxsackie ... on their bellies. The 3 medium sized Crabs for $26.95 definitely did not taste fresh, although May is supposedly the height of Soft Shell Crab season.
My wife decided to play it safe, so she ordered the stuffed pork chop off the $14.95 3-Course Prix Fixe Menu. It was dry and unremarkable, at best.
All of the accompaniments were bland & poorly prepared. Even the baked potato I ordered w/my crabs was small, dried out & shriveled, as if it had been "baked" the night before.
We sat down for dinner at 5 PM, so there was no acceptable excuse for the poor preparation, except that Red's either has no regard for it's (over) paying customers -- or the chef has no idea what he's doing!
For dessert, the so-called "Homemade Apple Pie" came out as a warm, nearly unrecognizable semi-triangle of crust; nothing resembling an apple to be found, despite Red's location alongside several of New York State's many large Apple orchards.
Given the $62 bill, plus a $8 tip for two adults and a child, we remarked that we probably would have been a lot more satisfied (and certainly a lot "flusher") eating burgers, onion rings, popcorn and sodas at the Drive In Movie Theater up the road, Â where we finished our evening!
