RIPPERS IS BACK, DUDEZ. a do not miss during that one poser beach trip you make this summer, then Instagram masturbate over for the next few months. 0:)
no but for really REALS. go get a burger. listen to some hot jams. babes of both male and female gender are employed here. also: support businesses in this area of "your" city you brag about to all your friends back home via internet..... remember that HURRICANE we had? here it is. give on back. for instance... after enjoying Rippers, why not go to that corner deli and get rolling papers. I don't know WHAT you'd need those for but hey.... ;)
After a long day of salt and sun, you're going to need to refuel, and Rippers is the perfect spot to do so. Grab a juicy, dripping cheeseburger and a side of cheese fries seasoned with some new, salty, form of crack, and wash it down with a $3 Narraganset. There's tons of picnic tables where you can watch the ocean, or listen some free tunes from a band of leather skinned surfer dudes. Easy, breezy, greasy good times.
*cash only!
**Frozen Margaritas after 6pm!
This is based on the fish sandwich and the juice. Â Juice was decent. Â I had a cucumber, mint, melon and I chugged it in a minute. Â Refreshing to have healthy options at a beach. Â My low rating has to do with the fish sandwich. Â The sandwich had good intentions... but the mayo sauce it was served with was so salty, it assaulted my tongue! Â The fish itself was bland and so was the slaw it same with. Â Regardless happy for the alternative to burgers, bad pizza and hot dogs.
Review Source:A boardwalk concession stand...ok fries...that's really all I can say about this place. There isn't much else around so they have you there. I like that the fries were fresh cut...I'm confused as to the texture of them after they've been fried...maybe it's just me but it seemed a little strange. They did have malt vinegar for me to put on my fries tho so that made up for it a bit. Over all...I wish YELP had an "Ehhhh" rating.
Review Source:Let's start with the new lime green paint job, which makes Rippers feel more rum shop in Tobago than it does New York City. Â Of course, it just takes one look at the apartment towers right across the street and the hipsters crowding the picnic tables to remind that, well, this is still NYC. Â And that's fine. Â After all, the reason you're here is to drink some $3 tall boys of Narragansett, eat a burger, and have a NYC beach experience, which is what Rippers is all about. Â
The food is legit too so don't get have too many fish tacos at Rockaway Taco before ambling on over to Beach 86th
What a nice surprise  - in the middle of the Rockaways! It's nice to see conscientious, in-touch business people tapping into this market and creating, well, something from almost nothing.
The food: one of the best burgers I've ever had, and I forgot to order with my favorites so it was a pretty stripped-down burger, still tender, juicy and fresh. The fries were unique and interesting and great!
Service: super friendly. Even the line cooks were quick with a smile and a can-do attitude. EVERYONE there was accommodating and and friendly.
Prices: I'm used to Manhattan, so I thought everything was reasonable including the sangria. (I didn't feel any kick from the white sangria, but I did like it.)
Location: The beach is the beach!
Yes, I'll go back!
Stood in a line up with say... 15 people ahead of us. It took 20 minutes before we could order. That's well over a minute to do the following:
***What would you like? Would you like cheese with that? $17.50 please, here's your change, step over there.***
Instead, the cashier was chit chatting with every single customer. Not to mention had to constantly reference the menu for pricing (it's hard to remember these things when there are 4 choices on the menu).
So that was the first 20 minutes, we waited another 30 for the food... Which came from a staff who moved like they were working the grill at their cousin's 10th birthday party. Does it really take 3 people to prep cheese fries? At Rippers it does, and they will stop making everyone else's food to do it. Then get sidetracked talking about something irrelevant before they go back to making the food of over 20 people angrily staring at them.
Makes you wonder why you pay so much for something slightly over priced for what it is. They are making CHEAP FAST FOOD... clocking in at 50 minutes and 17.50 for a hot dog, cheese fries, and fish sandwich qualifies it for none of those things.
Now I'm complaining just out of fair warning for Rippers, I can receive shoddy restaurant experiences from a blasé-hip-underexperienced staff for a price tag any day of the week living in Williamsburg. But when you have a business that is a destination amongst a booming beach scene... STEP IT UP! Hire some people who can sling burgers fast. That may require hiring some ordinary... maybe local staff.
Oh yeah, the cheese fries were good, hard to fuck that up. But the hotdog bun was moldy.
We got a big fried fish and staring at its head made me feel 'meh.' For $15 I was hungrier than that whole fish head and I had to split it with someone who was eating kinda fast - hate when that happens.
The fries were over seasoned, under cooked and over rated by my hipster compadres. In fact, this whole biz is just so so. I'm not telling you where you should really go...
Also there was the SHITTIEST BAND playing... No offense... Oh man I feel so bad but thats how I felt. It was just. Like. Not feelin it.
I prefer the juke box at bait n tackle...
Place was great, lots of locals , I only went cause my cousin hangs out with the local surfers and boarders so they wanted to show support to a fellow local playing in the band(Simon) Not my kind of music (surfer style, heavy on the guitar, old school tunes like"tequila" ) But I must say the atmosphere was so energenic and extremely welcoming i actually had a great time, random people come over and talk and introduce themselves, it was really cool. Now the food- food was great , i had a burger which was made to perfection and i wash it down with sangria which was insanely good. The only kicker it was like 12 bucks a cup, def pricey but really good though(had one too many though..lol) Fries were good too, not your average frozen bad just thrown in the fryer they actually make them from scratch with some spice to them, which i appreciated alot. All and all i will be back for some more drink after we are done at the beach!!
Review Source:The section of the beach Rippers is at is more peaceful and clean than the rest of Rockaway Beach. Rippers is on the boardwalk but that goes for the board walk and bathrooms too. The bathroom attendant here is friendly and knows about the one by Caracus. She said so many complained about that bathroom attendant but nothing was done she had the toilet seats off the toilets the entire summer! This section of the beach is more peaceful and I think the people at this section mostly live in Rockaway or they are at the beach every day. There is a surfer beach right next to it. The toilet seats stay on the toilets here!
All of the locals on the beach and surfers  all hug each other and even hug security and bathroom attendants. It all has a different feel from the rest of the beach. There were church groups here and youth groups and large family picnics.
Rippers has a similar feel to the beach here because it is the same crowd as on the beach here. All  l had was fries so far but they were yummy cheese fries.  I haven't tried the fish sandwich yet. Hopefully next year. I was not that hungry when we went.
They had a nice band and dancing but a more peaceful crowd than further down the beach. Rippers has upscale boardwalk food reinvented.
I would like to see a more extensive menu next  year. I am hoping they read this and expand their menu. This section of the beach is actually much nicer than the rest IMO and for that reason I give Rippers 4 stars though I like Caracus more.
The ladies rooms are not usable near Caracus and the lines are usually 45 minutes. Here there were only short civilized lines. Friendly staff and a much easier atmosphere. Here is an article about it from The NT Times. <a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nytimes.com%2Frestaurants%2F1248069042981%2Frippers%2Fdetails.html&s=3aa2eb40310ece613b6e0901d01d76723761113e0cf8864168019aa000fe17ae" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://www.nytimes.com/r…</a>
There is supposed to be Michelle Cortez formerly of Savoy and Meat Hook here at Rippers. The last time I checked there wasn't a herd of cows in Brooklyn so the meat is still brought in from upstate. I have had Kobe beef in Japan and Maui beef in Maui. Not so excited about meat from upstate NY!
Here is the menu. <a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2F86badvibes.com%2Fmenu%2Findex.html&s=15d3e39473c70b35621e671b2181d359d81d5dfed49f724085f3942201306e27" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://86badvibes.com/me…</a>
They do have a veggie burger but I really don't eat veggie burgers if I eat a burger (which I don't any more) I want a  real burger. But I want to try the fish sandwich for sure.
They have fresh juices and breakfast burritos as well. A limited menu but good surfer food.
The fish sandwich was great and I'm only giving Rippers a 2 because of the plain fries. I'm one of the biggest fries fan you will meet and I promise I have never ordered fries on an empty stomach and thrown them away after a few bites. Ever. Until I went to Rippers. My dissatisfaction with the plain fries is best expressed through this poem written by my friend Darrian:
"hipster fries
tasted like they battered it in sand from under the boardwalk
marinated in feet and glass shards
and splashed with beer can backwash"
As a Rockaway local, I am happy these concession stands finally have awesome food. Rippers has awesome burgers! So fresh! Of course they would be since the meat comes from Meat Hook. Not a fantastic selection of beer, but it's fairly priced. I usually grab a burger here after a surf session. My only complaint is that on some Saturday's the place is SO packed with people drinking and dancing on tables that you cannot get food/a place to sit. My other complaint is that it's a little too hipster.
Review Source:Im from Rockaway and was introduced to this spot last summer. Â Consistently good food and drink for the right price- nice people too. Â During the week its a fun place to ride your bike over to have lunch and a beer. Â On the weekend its the perfect scene to show up late afternoon and people watch, jump into the ocean before or after a good draft beer and find crowds dancing and having a great time. Â Highly recommend it!
Review Source:A legit Strong 4 & a half....Although Rockaway Taco was the launching pad of this "Bushwick on the beach" triangle  that has blossomed around this 20 some blocks of boardwalk and the streets cushioning it in the last few years, in my opinion this place is the Jewel in its crown, and perhaps most perfectly represents the best of what this scene is all about.  Growing up in Long Island I would never have believed that any municipal Robert Moses era boardwalk concession booth would be home to such incredible food with a wild scene, and perfect view of the sanctioned surfing spot and all the passing hipster fashionistas walking the boardwalk and beach, to accompany it. Â
Now, in its second year, i think the place has really hit its groove, and is significantly better than it was last year. Â For example last year while I always found the insanely good cheese fries to be among the best in the city, as I still do, the burgers could be perfectly executed on one occasion, and dried out the next. Â Hot dogs likewise could be a bit inconsistent. Â These kinks seemed to have been completely worked out by now, & I feel like you can pretty much expect whatever you get to be excellent. Â I'm very happy they worked it out, considering the quality of meat is top notch and supplied by the brilliant Meat Hook butcher that operates out of the Brooklyn Kitchen in Williamsburg, and its a shame to not showcase it perfectly all the time. Â
Making things even better is the fact that both the food and drink menus  have greatly expanded this year.  Specials frequently appear, particularly in weekdays, when I am lucky enough to occasionally end up during my workday.  Breakfast Burritos make pretty frequent appearances, and the black bean one was likely the best I have ever had.  I wasn't anywhere near as taken with the chorizo version, which didn't include the avocado at all, but it was by no means bad and I scarfed it down with no problem whatsoever.  Other specials have included a Maryland Style crab boil, blueberry johnny cakes, and perhaps the most frequent of all, a whole deep fried porgy served atop a huge pile of those excellent fries.  The best thing of all to eat that the place serves in my opinion however, is not a special, but a new permanent menu item that I am pretty sure was added this summer, the Fish Torta.  Way less Mexican leaning then the name might imply, its far more similar to something I know as simply a fish sandwich, or Fishwich, served like the burgers on a potato roll.  Its grilled and not fried, and impeccably so.  Its incredibly delicious served perfectly by the slightly spicy house sauce, and beautifully fresh cabbage.  It is now tied with The Dock in Montauk for my all time favorite fish sandwich.
As I said, the drinks have improved as much as the food.  While last year the place was beer only and limited to vile bud bud light along with tall boys of Narragansett beer, which is basically New England's version of Pabst, meaning Kitschy and cheap  but really bad tasting.  Things are helped greatly now by the addition of some more beers including Sixpoint cans, and best of all in my book, Bluepoint Summer on tap for the wholly reasonable price of 5 bucks a cup.  They have also finally gotten approval to ad the classic frozen beach drinks to the stand, and offer all the stalwarts, Margarita, Pina Coladas, Blue Hawaiians.  The most incredible drinks aren't the alcoholic varieties of any kind however, but the astounding Smoothies and juices.  If there are  any better ones in existence, I have yet to come across them.  There so delicious its hard to believe they have such good health benefits, which I am insisting to believe they do!  OK the place is not cheap, but again the quality is uniformly excellent,  and while the staff is pretty much as extreme in its hipsterism as possible, for the most part, with only a couple of exceptions, they are far far friendlier and courteous than you could ever imagine them being.  My grandma always said, don't judge a book by its cover!  Like everywhere else around here at this point however, just be prepared to deal with massive crowds and waits on any weekend visit you make all summer long, and judging by the increase in popularity here from last year, i don't think they will be getting any smaller anytime soon.
Spent the entire summer subconsciously  avoiding the new rockaway boardwalk establishments, for obvious reasons. Took the last opportunity, a 3 hour bike ride ( we took the scenic route) over labor day weekend to give it a try and am so glad we did. This was the more chill of the food shacks. Beautiful and stylish  people abound yet it didn't seem pretentious. We had the fries ( breaded in flour, salt and pepper-genious) and a couple of  $5 sixpointers. The rest of the food looked really great, too,  but we were set on tacos. I can't wait  for summer to arrive so that i can visit again and again an again
Review Source:Upgrading to five stars based on awesome burger with meat from The Meat Hook and for playing The Cramps. If there's a better surfer hangout/snack shack on some fabulous exotic beach someplace else, so be it. This place is awesome and you can get here on the A train. $2.25 and no jet lag.
Review Source:We were biking in from the east and this is the first food stand you hit. Despite this place being featured in this year's obnoxious NY Times article about how "hip" and "upscale" the Rockaways supposedly are now, we begrudingly went in here, and in reality this is a pretty unpretentious place with a pretty mixed crowd.
Good quinoa-centric veggie burger with avocado; great cheese fries. Pints of Bud for $4, and cans of Sixpoint for $5. Picnic tables for seating.
Beach 86th St.- the first concession on the beach. Â A great covered seating area with picnic tables, a beach view and lots of goodies............
Meat is from the Meat Hook- main reason I came...........
Hot dog on a potato roll
Fries with cheese
Fresh peach juice with mint
There is beer too and a great sounding ice-cream sandwich- iP.S. ce-cream sandwich which is merely great sounding is not worth the $4 for a pre-packaged sandwich. Â Stick to the savory and frresh juice.
Frank was meaty, full of flavor and a sweetish potato roll.  Fries were killer..crispy, skin on even under the cheesy, cheese.  Peach juice to wash it all down  The Rockaways rock and so does Rippers.  P.S. would prefer Beastie Boys to the hardcore hip-hop being played on Tuesday day.
Very tasty... Â Veggie burger was a nice choice and loaded with quinoa, their regular burger is also tasty... kind of like the mcdonald's version of the roberta's burger... very good.... but the true winner is the french fries.
They drop some flour on the potatoes when they're about to take their deep dive into the oil.. and they emerge like lopez gunning a 20 footer. Really incredible, and I try to stay away from fries in general. These are worth making the walk down to 86th St.
PS: "Titties and Beer" seems to be on their mind... as they sell shirts that literally say "Titties and Beer"... Seriously, hate to imagine the kids being inquisitive on that one... "Mommy, do the tities and beer come with our milkshake and french fries??"
Unfortunately, I was a bit stuffed from Motorboat and the Big Banana. Â Otherwise I would have indulged myself with a burger.
I ended up getting the Dreamcatcher fruit drink. Â It was a delicious avocado drink with a mix of coconut juice, almond milk and agave. Â My friend got the Green, equally delicious.
I will definitely be back, and with an appetite. Â It's supposed to be a collab between the guys at Roberta's and Meat Hook, so you definitely can't go wrong.
i'm not really sure why i'm even giving this place 2 stars. it was honestly terrible. the burgers taste like frozen patties. the veggie burger had zero flavor and was all gross and crumbly. the fries were the only decent thing. the spicy limeade was horrible. i will not be wasting my money at this place ever again. do yourself a favor and don't be fooled by this crap, go to rockaway taco. or bring your own beach snacks. its nice that you can sit and have a beer in the shade on the boardwalk but they only have bud and bud light. overall a big fat huge disappointment. it had such potential.......
Review Source:Since last summer, Rockaway has exploded with dining options--and the crowds have scaled up to match. The line at Rockaway Taco was 20 deep on Sunday, leaving our mouths as dry as day-old tortillas.
That option dashed, we headed down to the boardwalk at 96th, where a bevy of food vendors have taken over, under the direction of Rockaway Taco folks. There's Thai fast food, an outpost of Rockaway Taco (sans tacos, just flautas and chips) and Motorboat & the Big Banana, southern-fried fish, chicken and fries--and frozen bananas, of course.
Unfortunately none of these places had planned for every kid in Williamsburg to show up with an appetite. Thai food had closed up shop by 3:30pm, food stash completely gobbled up. Not even a bottle of water to be found! And Motorboat & the Big Banana was fished out.
Two strikes. We headed down the boardwalk to 86th to our last resort--Rippers. Not nearly as crowded, and we successfully placed an order for a cheeseburger, fries and an "Ecuadorian"--a lip-smacking slurry of cucumber, mint & agave.
The burger was decent, not extra-well-done as indicated in the Times review. In fact it was pinker than you might like a burger to be at a boardwalk grill. The fries were tasty, somewhere between the fresh-cut style of In'n'Out and the reconstituted fry-sticks at the major burger chains.
The best thing about Rippers is without a doubt the dining room--a half a dozen wooden picnic tables chilling on the boardwalk. Ocean views all around. Which always makes the food taste better (and earns 'em a third star) That, if nothing else, should be reason enough to grab a seat.
