Based on the food and decor alone, I would give this place 3 stars. However, what bumped it up an extra star in my book was the great service we had. My boyfriend and I came here for dinner after a day at Six Flags. We were exhausted and starving and just looking for some filling comfort food which is exactly what this place offers. Do not let the fact it looks like a little hole in the wall deter you.
The decor is an eclectic mix of British themed memorabilia, from pictures of the past British royals to quotes by famous Brits. I would probably call it more of a restaurant than a pub. They do have a car and a few TVs but most of the place is taken up by tables and booths. The tables and chairs are a little bit worn but I think it adds to the "pub" feel. It gives the entire place a more relaxing atmosphere and I can see as a comfortable place I would go just to get a few beers and catch up with my friends.
Now for the food. I ordered the Shepard's Pie and my boyfriend got their famous fish and chips. This was my first time having Shepard's Pie and I have only had it at two other places since then so my opinion may be a little biased, but I thought it was amazing. The mashed potatoes were very creamy and served as the perfect shell for the meat underneath which was cooked nice and juicy with lots of seasoning and flavor. There was a little cup of peas (most likely canned peas) on the side to go with the meal but I left those untouched and would have preferred fresh peas. However, with the portion sizes they give you and the prices, I don't really mind being served canned peas on the side. I finished maybe 2/3 of the pie before I was totally full.
I tried some of my boyfriend's fish and chips and I didn't really see what they hype was about. Maybe it is because I like my food with a bit more flavor too it but the fish seemed to lack seasoning and just reminded me of frozen fish pieces that I could get at the grocery store and heat up.
For dessert we got the sticky toffee cake. I have never had anything like it before. It was a moist square coffee-ish flavored cake sitting in the middle of a sea of sticky yellow pudding. I am not sure how to describe the pudding but it was very thick and reminded me more of maple syrup in its consistency than pudding but it worked perfectly with the cake in the middle. Not too sweet and just enough to leave you satisfied (not not overstuffed).
So now to the service. My boyfriend wanted a beer with his meal and they had so many on tap. Our waiter was so patient about explaining all the different kinds of beer and helped choose one based on what my boyfriend wanted. I really appreciated the time that he took to make sure that we got the right drinks. Our waiter had a great laidback personality that fit right in with the atmosphere of the pub. When my boyfriend knocked over his water glass and shattered it, our waiter was so gracious about it and put our own fretting to ease. Overall the service here is friendly and comfortable and will definitely amp up your dining experience.
Good food, good prices, and great service. Would come back again if I am ever in the area.
Very small pub, go for a "snake bite" at the bar, bangers and mash and fish and chips are always our favorites with friends. Super friendly staff and always good food and service.
If you are looking for a 5 star restaurant...........seek else where, If you want good food, good prices and friendlt service.............and the best fish and chips around.............here you are!
This is a quaint little hole in the wall kind of place that is certainly adequate and worth a try, but I was left underwhelmed after seeing some of the ratings/reviews this spot was given on Yelp.
The selection of beers on tap, including eight British brews and a few Irish choices, was a welcome surprise. Even though it is labeled as a pub, the size and layout is actually a restaurant. The bar has seating for 6 to 8 people only, with a couple of moderate sized HDTV's for sports-watching. Most of the floor space is dedicated to tables and booths. The food choices are fairly authentic British-style preparations. I had the bangers and mash, which was actually pretty tasty. The mashed potatoes definitely tasted like the "instant" variety and the accompanying peas were not fresh (probably frozen). However, the bangers were spot on and given that the meal only cost $10 means that I wouldn't really ding them on cutting a couple of corners there, rather than go to the trouble of mashing potatoes on site and keeping fresh veggies. All this is to say is that the quality of the food is in line with the prices on the menu - an ok value and a good spot for a budget-conscious traveler who is looking to save more of their cash for expenditures in Six Flags nearby. The food was alright and left me full, but definitely not worthy of four stars, let alone five!
The decor is proper English - not really in the style of a true British pub, but more like a tourtisty tea room decorated with British-themed photos of royals, landmarks, etc. Perfectly acceptable, but the ambiance was a bit off when I visited (Thursday at 8pm). Pop music played in the background and the closest thing that I heard to British music was a Madonna track from the 90s (she does live over there, you know). The upholstery was a tad worn, with a few tears in the leather seats, but not run down.
Overall, a decent place to get an English fix at an attractive price. Just don't be expecting a four star (or above) experience.
I've been here so many times now and I love it more and more. Â The staff are amazing and greg makes you really feel at home. Â I'm happy to be on my way towards being a regular. Â They have many special events and keep me updated via email. Â Only thing bad about the Rose and Crown is that they are not open late enough! Love coming in here just to have a nice hearty warm meal and a delicious beer. Â Keep up the good work guys!
Review Source:I went here last night, and let me just tell you I wish they didn't close at 9pm because I would have stayed there all night! This place is amazing! I am in love with their fish n' chips as well as their well put together drink list featuring non-mainstream/non-domestic drinks. What really made me like this place was the environment itself. The place is decorated exactly like an English pub and that includes the noise and excitement you get to hear from compassionate soccer/football fans in the restaurant. This place is a family owned business and you definitely get that warm and welcoming feeling from the people who work there. I decided to also try the scotch egg with my fish n' chips and I was surprised that I really liked it, since I don't eat much meat.
I will be going back to this place as much as my small paycheck lets me!
I visit family in Valencia at least few times a year, and it seems that there's always new place to try....typically a chain. Â Which is why I was so excited stumble upon this place. Â Walking up to the restaurant it was hard to tell if they were open because it was so dim, and I immediately knew I'd be all about this joint. Â Â Reviewers are right on when they say the fish and chips are amazing, the scotch egg is pretty solid as well....and the pasty's are legit! Â With a diverse beer selection, and really great food, the Rose & Crown will definitely be seeing me again.
Review Source:Fish n chips, bangers and mash, and sausage rolls! Yes, Rose & Crown has got the classics down. Â We had the pleasure of enjoying a family dinner here this evening and it was fantastic. Â Small family owned establishments are sometimes the jewels we need in our lives. Amanda, our server, was a breath of fresh air too. Â The four stars are due to the scampi part (fried shrimp) of the fish and scampi being pretty nasty--hot, but nasty. Â In the past we have traveled nearly two hours to visit a British pub as part of a family tradition. Â Thankfully the Rose & Crown Pub is less than five minutes away and is absolutely replacing the old...gross scampi and all.
Review Source:Maybe I expected too much after reading such great reviews?  Not sure but I wasn't overly thrilled with this place.  We visited on a Tuesday night around 6:30pm. The menu is rather limited but we ordered onion rings as a starter and as our entrees the Fish & Chips and the Shepherd's Pie.  The onion rings looked and tasted like frozen Ore-Ida brand.  The Fish & Chips were good - a decent-sized portion of  fish, a handful of fries that looked and tasted like frozen Ore-Ida brand and a small portion of green pees that looked and tasted like frozen.  It all tasted "fine".  Nothing great but nothing awful.  The Shepherd's Pie was very good!  All the flavors worked well together and the portion size was generous without being gargantuan.  I recommend the Shepherd's Pie and would order it again.  Did not see anything listed for dessert and the server didn't mention anything.  Speaking of the server,  he was not the speediest around... probably because he spent quite a bit of time chatting it up with patrons  he obviously knows quite well.  Our food also was not brought to the table at the same time.  My Fish  & Chips came out first and there was a good 5-8 minute wait for my husband's Shepherd's Pie.  That really threw me as it's only polite to wait to begin eating until all parties have received their meal.  On this one I blame the chef for poor timing more than I blame the server for poor attention.  My husband ordered two different beers and was pleased with both as well as with the selection.
I'd go back here if I was hungry and in the area. Â It was "fine", I'm not a super picky restaurant-goer and I just do not at all get these 5-star reviews. Â Especially not the ones which state the fish n chips is so good they'll make ya wanna slap ya momma. Â Not even close. Â I guess we dined at two different restaurants... or one of us is confused.
I decided to take my fiancée to Rose and Crown Pub so she could enjoy a little bit of her own culture for a change (she is British and recently moved here).
She absolutely loved it! The fish and chips were really good and the sticky toffee pudding was excellent.
What she liked most was the genuine working class pub atmosphere. She truly felt at home and had a great time.
All in all the food was very good, the ambiance was just right, and the prices reasonable.
We fully enjoyed our dinner experience and would highly recommend it to any AmeriBrit wanting to get a shot of the old country, or for that matter, to anyone simply wanting to have a great night out to dinner. Cheers!
The best damn pub in the greater LA area; if you disagree you're probably Irish or ugly, or both.
Been gone 2 years, the second I walk in I'm greeted like it was just yesterday. That is a feeling you won't understand if you haven't been here, or again, if you're ugly or irish.
Amazing fish n Chips, so good they'd make ya wanna slap ya momma if you knew where she was. The bier, Weinstephaner as far as the German eye can see (which isn't very far because we are usually drunk).
Rose & Crown, oh how I've missed thee.
I guess it really depends on what is your primary goal is. If you're going for a beer and watch games that would be an excellent place. But don't order food! Fish and Chips... I think that BJ's serves better ones. The fries were chewy. The shepherd's pie had so much spice that it was impossible to taste meat in it. Usually so many spices used to cover something not fresh.
On the other hand if you're there just for a pint of beer, it's an excellent place. They have small but pretty good selection of English and Irish beers.
Try to spend some time just looking at the walls where they have some very interesting pictures, but you have to really know about English royal family to enjoy them. And they get lost between 2 big screen TVs on each wall and the atmosphere of a sports bar.
Service was excellent and the place has a family owned feel to it. Â That alone makes this place far more worthy of your patronage than most other places in town. Â It's a nice, cozy place to get a pint of Guinness.
Was not so impressed with the food. Â My scotch egg was tasty, but over cooked. Â As for the fish and chips (something I'm an expert on), the fish was heavy and over cooked. Â The chips were not properly twice fried. Â Fried fish from a respectable chip shop will always but very light, delicate, and golden in color. Â Not tough and dark brown.
We look forward to going back.
I came here after seeing all the great yelp reviews and I will have to say thanks to all the yelpers because this place was great!
I came here for dinner with a friend and wasn't expecting too much except to have a quick bite and a beer. Â Well, the ambience of the place was definitely British....go figure. Â They had a rugby on the tube and royal paraphernalia everywhere. Â
Our server was very friendly and helpful. Â Since it was my first time, I had a lot of questions about the menu, but our server was very patient and took the time to explain everything to us.
As far as the fish and chips go, they were really good. Â I don't want to say they were the best fish and chips I've ever had, but they were probably the most authentic. Â I will have to say they were definitely tasty. The fish was very crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.
I definitely can't wait to go back and try some other things off of their menu.
My husband and I have been coming here for a few years. It started as a St. Patrick's Day adventure which drew us in immediately. We've spent St. Patrick's Day, the Wills and Kate wedding and regular meals here and it's always been a treat for us. When they have their "big" days, one needs to get there early to beat out their big groups of regulars for a table as it is a small place. Else, you'll be sharing a table ( not a bad thing as one gets to meet new people) or you'll be in a chair only, or you'll be standing. On regular days, seating does not seem to be an issue.
As for the food: we've loved everything we've had. On St. Patrick's Day, the corned beef and cabbage is the going fare. Very good! On regular days, I always go for the bangers and mash served with peas and a savoury gravy. The best! My husband has had the fish and chips and each of their meat pies which he likes very much. His favourite appetizer is the Scotch Egg. I've also had the Strongbow cider which I've enjoyed - not knowing much about cider in general. Neither of us is a beer drinker, so I can't speak to that.
They televise the european soccer matches which brings in VERY enthusiastic and boisterous fans at times. I think any sports fans somehow believe they are in their own livingrooms no matter where they are! *l* Regardless, it's nice there's a place to watch the matches AND have a great meal at the same time.
And bringing it all together is Greg. Fantastic personality, savvy, friendly and attentive. He's a BIG part of what makes this one of our favourite places to go.
My husband and I were looking for a good place to eat so we hopped on Yelp and typed in "Awesome Food" and The Rose and Crown Pub came up and we decided to give it a try.
OMG It was so awesome!!!!
We started off with the onion rings which were so good. Â I don't even like onions but the onion rings were hot and delicious. Â
Our server Amanda was so good and attentive and took very good care of us. Â She gave us good recommendations and was great.
My husband had the steak and mushroom pie with the pastry topping and he loved it.
The gravy was the best part. Â I've never had gravy that tasted that good.. Â I tasted it and it just melted in my mouth. Â I had the Shamrock pasty and it was so flavorful. Â
The portions are small but the food was awesome.  I am waiting  to try the Shepard's pie next time.
We ordered the sticky toffee pudding and thought we would die it was so good. Â It is really sweet but perfect for sharing. Â
We are fans and will be back often. Â It is a small place with character.
OK..I really wanted to like this place and give this place a higher rating based on the fact that it was very clean, and the young guy who waited on us was an excellent waiter and very friendly.
The place also has a comfortable atmosphere...BUT unfortunately it ends there for me and my wife. My wife has traveled extensivly in England,NZ,Austrailia..and liked the atmosphere at this place too..but she as well as I can not give the food we had any more than a 1..and the price is a little high for the amount and quality of the food, we both agreed it isnt much differant than the frozen fish and chips we buy at the grocery store and make at home...we dont need to go out for that. The fish was dry as was the batter, not crispy..just dry and tasteless. for $13.50 I got two hand size ( medium) pieces of fish with a lot of breading..about 4 tablespoons of cooked frozen peas, and a small portion of average tasting fries....
I had a draft ale..medium glass..$5.50
To me pricey considering the location in a old mimi mall next to a 99cent store...on one side and on the other side..well..We thought their was a lowrider outside iht the parking lot with a ghetto blaster but turned out next door their is a kids dance studio with the music booming against the wall thru the whole dinner (5pm)...not the greatest ambiance.
As I said...hate to review it so low because the people were nice...but...it is what it is.
Most the food establishments in Valencia/Santa Clarita ( where I live) are below par in the food dept...this is no exception unfortunately
I love The Rose & Crown! I set up a Yelp account just to review them!
I come here at least a couple of times a month and I think it truly is SCV's best restaurant AND the best Pint in the LA area! Trust me, I love British pubs, Â have tried all the pubs within pub crawling distance, and this one beats them all... Always cold!
A family owned and run business with GREAT British pub food, 20 beers on tap the last time I counted, and a space in the back with a shelf of British imports, especially around Christmas time.
Great and friendly service... Greg is the absolute best! Â Many thanks to him and all at The R&C, for many good times spent there and many more to come!
P.S. , To Kevin, the brat below who gave them 1 star: Â
Firstly, you obviously know nothing about beer, and certainly nothing about British beer! Ale is not carbonated, so if you want fizz, I suggest you go get a 7up.
And Second, I am sure that what you said about the food and the salad can't possibly be true! The people at the R&C go to great trouble to make sure that the food is fresh. And if you don't want deep fried food, Don't order it! There are many things on the menu that are not! The Shamrock pasty is great! Besides, who goes to a British Pub, and expects not to find fried food?!
Thirdly, Greg is a fantastic server and anyone who says he's not is just looking for things to complain about. Go home and listen to your Emo recoords and weep for a while... it will make you feel better.
'Nuff said!
One of the best restaurants in our valley!
A nice little hole in the wall British pub. Â This is a real pub, serving real British pub food, pouring real beers (20 on tap) and owned by a real British Family.
Over the past year, they did change the tap system out and upped the beer offering by 5 to a total of 20. Â Gone is the Firestone Walker, but there are new beers including a Monte Python beer that was excellent.
Gone also is the plowmans lunch, and most sad is the departure of the spotted dick. Â I just miss ordering it and watching my kids as they try to stifle their laugh. Â But they do still have the sticky toffee pudding, which was superb.
They make the best fish and chips in our valley, and possibly the LA area too. Â I opted for something different and had the steak and mushroom pie. Â It's not a real pie, but topped with a large flaky pastry that was so, so good. Â The meat was tender and tasty.
All of this is served up by Greg, the owners son, who as always is an excellent host. Â As stated in prior reviews, you have to look beyond the strip mall location. Â This is a true Santa Clarita gem. Â They are closed Mondays and do close early, so you may want to call before coming.
So my husband and I have made the R&C our regular pub, and we're lucky we don't spend our entire paycheck here.
It's a pub, and along with the delicious beer selection (really, you can't go wrong), they've got delicious pub food. British food is supposed to be the blandest on the planet, right? The butt of all foodie jokes? No so at the R&C!
We've had almost everything on the menu, from the shepard's pie to the bangers&mash to the scotch eggs to the fish&chips to the pasties. Everythings delicious. Typical restaurant (not bar) prices, and it's totally worth it.
They've started having Trivia Night (the "British In-QUIZ-ition" - hah!) on alternating Saturday nights through a group called Action Trivia. As if we needed another reason to go to the pub! We've had a roaring good time, learning crucial bits of information such as how far Russia actually IS from Alaska (answer: 2.5 miles).
I already have plans to watch all international sporting events (Olympics, World Cup, etc.) here.
I'll rue the day when I move away & can't come to the Rose & Crown anymore.
PS on really hot nights, try the hard cider! Super refreshing!
Fish and chips!!! Oh yea that's the ticket .  I live  5 minutes from here and have been wanting to go for a long time. I should have gone sooner because it's really good. The portions are good and the food is authentic for a British pub.
They have a really good  selection of british brews. It also has a good vibe. It's a good neighborhood bar I can enjoy a beer, watch a soccer game and talk about who will win the next world cup. The staff is very friendly.
After 17 years in this valley I can't believe it's taken me this long to get to the Rose and Crown!! I felt like trying someplace new and for some reason this was the first place I thought of. That's because, it's awesome!! I'm so glad we finally made it out here.
We walked in a mere 15 minutes before they were closing the kitchen. Greg, our server, was kind enough to squeeze in our order of fish and chips and scotch egg.
After we ordered we enjoyed checking out the sweet decor. The place is so unabashedly British it's amazing. Every wall is covered from floor to ceiling in British pictures and art. Princess Diane was staring at Ted from across the restaurant and Winston Churchill was glaring at him from above. The whole scene was incredible. Greg was amazingly on top of it the whole night. He was super  friendly and relaxed, even spending a few minutes chatting with us at our table about the royal wedding. He was one of the best servers we have ever had.
Ted had remarked that at $11ish the fish and chips for one filet was pretty expensive. But, when it came out of the kitchen he realized that it was down right cheap. One fish filet is Huge!! It was roughly the size of Ted's hand. Yum. The crispy crust was perfect. The peas were so good they seemed fresh and the fries were yummy and not overly salted (hello malt vinegar!) It was definitely some of the best fish and chips we have ever had!
My order of scotch egg looked horrible. I've never had a scotch egg before and it looked downright unappetizing. But, I'm dedicated to my food craft and didn't dare not try it. Lucky for me because it was awesome!! A scotch egg is a hardboiled egg encased in ground beef then covered in breadcrumbs and sitting in a bed of gravy. It was very rich, unique and delicious. Not like anything I've ever tried before.
Even though Ted and I aren't beer drinkers I felt inspired by the Irish Cream Ale they have on tap called Kilkenny. I'll be damned if that isn't one of the finest beers I have ever tasted! It had amazing head on top and the beer itself was thick and smooth. It was like drinking velvet. I loved every second of it and it may be the first beer I have ever finished on my own accord (barring beer pong situations).
We loved how Rose and Crown offered British classics in a British environment without us having to buy a plane ticket to Britain. It was such a wonderful evening there with the stellar staff and pleasant food. I can't wait to go back, pull up to the bar and order a pint of Kilkenny! Cheers.
Best beer selection in Santa clarita HANDS DOWN. Pete has managed to bring together a beer selection that would be envied by any European pub
In ANY country (and take it from me, o have been to hundreds and hundreds of pubs all thru europe!). Great authentic British food and lots of great regulars at the bar! Don't miss out on this spot!
This place. is. awesome. After the usual circle around the suburbs and avoiding places like "BJs" and "Elephant Bar", (*shudder*), I had remembered this tiny hole in the wall down Lyons, but I didn't know if it was just a bar or if they had food.
Oh, THEY HAVE FOOD, I got the classic fish and chips and it was delicious. Our server was great, an adorable seemingly gay man. It's a great place to escape the hopelessness of the 'burbs.
I got yelled at for smoking outside when we left by a stupid teenager working at the yogurt shop next store.
Stopped in today for an afternoon snack after we just happened to drive by. The decor was very cute, but I honestly was creeped out by the Princess Diana booth, but hey, it has been over ten years, so I guess it's okay.
I was actually hoping to get a crumpet or scone and tea but sadly they had none. Â
We split a cheese and onion pasty (which was delicious) and an order of sausage pasties and chips. The chips were very good. We didn't care for the sausage though. The highlight was the toffee sticky pudding with custard sauce. I seriously would order a dish of the warm custard and caramel sauce and eat it with a spoon.
Great Food, best Bangers and Mash. Â Sheperds Pie is my favorite dish. Â The staff is very helpful and friendly. Â The Tap Beer is an adventure. Â If you ask, you can sample any tap beer they have. Â Old Speckled Hen is my Rose and Crown regular. Â The "Rose and Crown irregulars" band was great. Â Normally their is a Football game on and they have my team's flag on the wall (Liverpool)
I told one of my adult sons about the place, he tried it out and now he loves it.
Friday, fish and chips. Hubby and I thought of going to H&H Fish and Chips in Canyon Country, but after reading Larry's review, decided to try this place - again.
We had dinner here about 14 years ago, yup, you read it right, that's 14 years ago! Â Food was awful and the owners were not very friendly. It was dark and more of a pub. We walked in tonight around 8:00 pm and the place is brighter. All tables were full with families, except for one empty table that we grabbed. Throwback music was playing.
Tina, the server, was nice and the full restaurant had her going every which way. Pete, the owner whom we met later, was cleaning tables. Both were busy and working as fast at they could.
We ordered fish and chips. Hubby was curious about Bonnington beer on tap and was given a sample, he didn't like it and went for Bass instead. Food took almost 30 minutes to appear. With no bread or chips or anything to munch on, we sat there and watched the locals hanging out at the bar go in and out of the place to, what I think is, smoke outside. It's always good to see locals.
Food came... I liked the peas very much. It was sweet and not mushy. French fries are thick cut, nothing special. I cut the fish in half and immediately noticed that the white creamy looking stuff that you'd normally see inside the batter was MISSING - a good sign that the fish is fresh, not frozen. The white stuff is the juice that oozes out when you cook any meat that's been frozen.
The fish is cod, and very fresh. The batter is fresh also and you can tell the fish was just dipped in it - not dipped then frozen. It had good flavor and the right thickness. I grabbed the bottle of malt vinegar and proceeded to make my lips turn white. Wonderful!
It's a bit on the expensive side at $13.95 for 2 pieces of fish, fries and peas. But cod is becoming extinct and supply is running low so I can understand their pricing - you gotta cover your costs. I just hope that it's sustainable given the economy that we're in right now.
The fish and chips were so good we forgot to order the spotted dick for dessert. I can't wait to get my lips on that when we go back!
This is our local watering hole. It is like coming home and I'm not anywhere close to British. It is run by an awesome British family who are always great whether at the bar or waiting on a table. Highly recommend it.
The on tap English beer selection is great (although now that the Old Speckled Hen is gone, not quite as good) and the fish and chips are spectacular. The Scottish egg is one of the tastiest things I have ever eaten at a bar.
Excellent experience!
