Grub is hit or miss depending on what you order.... Cabo Tacos are the ladies' favorite and they definitely don't mess up a good ole' fish and chips. Garlic fries and onion rings are tasty and priced well.
Some of the servers seem less than excited about their job. However, one of the bartenders(male, late 20's, short blonde hair) makes a fantastic Bloody Mary and I'm not a tomato juice kind of guy. Decent tap selection, usually have a Fig Mtn handle or two.
Prices are as expected in MB, but there are a few good values if you search the menu.
All-in-all... Â good spot for a beer and a fish basket.
Simply ordered fish and chip takeout.
Waiting over 10 minutes you'd expect "hot" food.... sadly upon opening the bag(only seconds after picking it up) chips/fries were stone cold. Fish was warm-ish. And the cole slaw had zero flavour.
Disappointed.
But the view on the deck was pleasant while we waited.
We decided to try Rose's Landing during our stay at Morro Bay and the food was pretty good. My husband had the seafood bouillabaisse and I had the wild salmon salad along with the scallops and portabella mushroom appetizer and were pleased with our food. Definitely a nice place to catch the sunset over dinner.
Review Source:My family and I went here for dinner the other night and were very disapointed. We had ordered the specials for the evening which were the French burger and halibut fish and chips. Also, we shared an appetizer of mussels.
The burger pattie tasted like a meatball, and it certainly tasted and looked as if it were one of those pre-made frozen ones you get at the supermarket. For $14, you should expect something made to order; it certainly wasn't medium as my husband had requested, more like very well done.
In addition, the mussels had this weird bitter sauce, not sure if it was the wine they had used or what, but not very appealing. The fish was okay, not flavorful but not bad. I've had better elsewhere though.
The service was good, it's just a shame that the food didn't match up to that. I will not be going back there again. I'm sure there are better options in the area. That might explain why the place was nearly empty at dinner time.
HORRIBLE SERVICE. Â I sat at a patio table for more than 15 minutes yesterday afternoon; I could hear the waiter waiting on other tables behind me, but after TWO trips around to the tables he was waiting, and loudly talking to the couple RIGHT BEHIND ME about how he didn't care for oyster shooters, he STILL failed to even acknowledge my existence. Â I never once had anyone from the wait staff come to my table. So I left. Â I walked completely through the restaurant with not one employee saying one word to me. If I could give it no stars I would.
Review Source:My husband had the all you can eat oysters and clams and he was in heaven. He had the oysters fried and raw and they were awesome. Clams were steamers and they were good too.
I had the fish and chips which were good. Too much breading for me so I just took some off. I had the garlic fries too which were awesome.
Our waitress was awesome, really nice, and was super busy. She did a great job. This place has an amazing view during sunset with the rock right by. All food is big so don't order a lot.
After our wedding, we chose Rose's Landing upstairs dining room for our wedding dinner with our 9 guests. Â I went in to make the reservations with Kelli, the manager of the upstairs dining room. Â She was so kind and gave us the exact corner I had requested which offered beautiful ocean views for the 11 of us. Â The service was wonderful, the food was excellent and the view was spectacular. Â
Everyone in our party had something different to eat, Â from prime rib to a salmon salad to crab legs and of course their fish and chips (killer garlic fries) not to mention the best clam chowder in all of Morro Bay.
We will definitely go back there again and would recommend this dining experience highly. Â Thank you Kelli and Rose's Landing for making our wedding even more special for us and our guests.
Here are bullet points on items that we ordered that night:
- Could not enjoy the "fresh" oysters while dealing with bits of shells in every bite. Kinda tasty otherwise.
- Oysters rockefeller where literally slapped together, with a few raw spinach leaves and a dabble of barely melted cheese on top of each oyster.
- Shrimp and lobster taco's had shrimp the size of your finger tips and no lobster, all of which were buried under a mountain of unseasoned, bland cabbage. Rice and beans had no flavor.
- Ginger ale was homemade, but it turned out to be water with a splash of sprite. Not sure what made it the light brown color that it was. Reordered - even less color and less sprite this time.
- Garlic fries were drenched in oil, each frie containing enough oil to be soaked up by an entire napkin (no exaggeration).
- Halibut was bland and probably contained salmonella, giving my bro-in-law food poisoning (he had cold shakes the rest of the night).
- Ice cream was riddled with the icicles you get when ice cream gets old.
Based on food alone, this is by far the worst restaurant we've ever been to. This doesn't affect the rating, but it was my bro-in-law's birthday dinner and it was a horrible experience. Our server did, however, deal with all of the food's shortcomings very, very well and gave us great service (with what she had to work with).
Great candidate for Restaurant: Impossible.
My hubby & I were just walking past the restaurant & there was a guy outside handing out samples of Clam Chowder - absolutely delicious!! Even though we had planned to eat lunch somewhere else we decided to go inside & were not disappointed.
Sat out on the patio area which overlooks the bay where we were entertained by the antics of 2 seals and some seagulls & pelicans who were hanging around waiting for treats from one of the fishing boats which had docked next to the restaurant.
Ordered a bowl of the clam chowder & the mixed seafood platter which had shrimp, battered fish, calamari, clam strips and garlic fries - totally scrumptious!!
Will definitely go back and recommend this place to friends & family. Great service, great food & great location!!
Wow! Without a doubt, this has to be the worst seafood I've ever had. Ordered the shrimp skewers and scampi; it felt as if I was chewing on rubber erasers. The garlic fries were bland and greasy. My wife's meal came with coleslaw, which could've been cabbage mixed with glue. Overall, a very disappointing dining experience.
Review Source:Not the best, but not the worse seafood I've ever had. Â I went at 1pm for lunch. Â I had fish and chips. Â The fish was actually pretty good, but the fries came out to medium warm. Â I was sitting outside on a pretty windy day, but they were not piping hot from the start. Â The chowder for $3.95/cup had a lot of flavor, and was my favorite part of the meal, although the texture of it was a little off. Â The place does have a great view of the Rock, which is a benefit if you are bringing someone from out of town. Â The food is reasonably priced. Â Service was great, but the place was not that busy when I was there. Â Maybe I just was there on a bad/slow day.
Review Source:I've made better food hungover in a mobile home.
And it's not just the food that's deserving of the one star, the staff was completely incompetent. Our waitress may have been all smiles, but she was lacking any skills necessary to serve. She didn't tell us the specials, instead we had to hear about them from anther server telling the table next to us. We ordered bacon and eggs. How do you mess that up? She brought eggs, yep ... just eggs. Although the bill charged us for "Bacon & Eggs $8.95.
The rest of the staff seemed to walk around the restaurant aimlessly and completely confused by their surroundings. I know they were all young, but really, there's no excuse. Even if it was slow (we were one of three tables in the place), you can still find something to do besides uncomfortabley staring at the customers.
I won't visit again. It's one of MANY places on Embarcadero to dine with a view, so that's not a one up for the place. For a tourist spot, I suppose it's all to common to lack genuine atmosphere, but it lacks appeal all together.
We came here mid-week for what we thought would be a gourmet dinner. The ambience was excellent with great views of the Rock and the harbor.. We were seated promptly and water was brought to us. After that, everything went downhill fast. The service was slow, on several occasions we looked around for our waiter who was not to be seen. Considering that only 3 tables in the place were taken, this was frustrating.
I ordered the New York steak for $28 and my wife ordered the seafood salad. In a word, the steak was terrible. I could only eat about one quarter of it, the rest was fat and gristle. What was edible was fairly bland. This place calls itself a steakhouse - the quality of my steak was lower than any cheap dive I've ever eaten in. Â I figure the steak was a $3.00 piece of meat with a $28 price tag. I left a huge pile of fat and gristle on the plate and was disgusted with what I did eat.
My wife had the seafood salad. Again, the quality was terrible. The crab was flavorless and indistinguishable from any other mush they may have placed on her plate. There were a dozen or so baby shrimp which were mushy and bland. The greens were okay.
In summary, the quality of food at this restaurant is horrible. I've served better leftover steak to my dog than what I was served here for $28. This place is not a steakhouse and should remove the designation from their sign. Â And you can definitely get better seafood at any place within a few steps away on the embarcadero.
They have a bartender who has worked there almost 20 years! His service is great and he makes a wonderful Bloody Mary.
Sitting at the bar feels like an optical illusion, because the height of the bar is low. Â So you sit in a regular chair instead of a stool. Â And the bartenders stand on a floor lower than the restaurant floor. Â You have a great ocean/rock view, but it's a different feeling than usual!
Besides the Bloody Mary, I had the crab cakes from the appetizer menu. Â I thought they were a little skimpy on the sauce but the crabs themselves were pretty good. Â
All in all a nice place to have a drink.
All I can say is , " what was I thinking ordering a Cesar salad with ahi tuna"? Granted the ahi steak was fairly large, it was tasteless (not even SALT!) and it was a bit cold. Even the taco's looked kind of gross. My sister got the blackened ahi tuna ... Which was ok but the wasabi was frozen...
The only thing that was decent was the garlic fries, which was like having McD fries with the garlic concoction Gordon Biersch has for its fries.
The server was nice, but damn did it take forever to get the food and to pay. We actually had to get up and find a cashier. They did apologize after we were finally able to pay.... but they said their chef walked out on them the same day....
All in all, this is a last resort kind of a place. I mean, my dad will eat literally anything, and his exact words were, "Wow, the food REALLY sucked". lol, my sentiments exactly, dad.
2.5 stars
Upgraded to a 3 because it was late and the whole area was shut down. Â I was covered in sand from the beach and tired as hell from kayaking..
I wanted to fall asleep in the booth. Â
I got fish and chips with some coleslaw. Â It was okay...nothing special. Â It was a bit lukewarm, but it was still a deep fried party in a basket.
The whole place screamed of the Ryan Reynolds movie Waiting. Â Small town restaurant kinda place.
Don't be fooled by the reviews from angsty out of towners from the Valley who don't respect or appreciate our beautiul town or the wonderful restaurants it has to offer. Â
I'm a local and have been searching for the best shrimp and chips for 12 years. Roses has the best shrimp and chips of any place in Morro Bay. Â The shrimp are always plump and juicy. Â The fish is excellent as well. But their shrimp is the best in the city.
If I'm starving I'll order the combo platter with squid, calamari, shrimp, and fish. It's a huge mountain of delicious seafood.
They have a bar which is great. Â The drinks are a little pricey, however.
Overall quality of food is good and the prices aren't outrageous.
Don't listen to the valley scum who don't know a damn thing about seafood.
It was 8pm Thanksgiving eve and most of Morro Bay was closed up tight. We wandered down the Embarcadero thinking that dinner was going to end up being chips and salsa in our shabby motel.
But wait! Like a beacon of light in a dark harbor, Rose's Landing was open and ready to serve. We had some very tasty fish and chips and a crab sandwich with garlic fries that hit the spot on a late, chilly night. Best of all, the bartender/server was very friendly - she even went out to her car for a wine book after we told her we were going tasting over the weekend.
Pretty legit place for a snack, and during the day I'm sure the views are awesome. Recommended!
My review is based solely on the to go side of the business. I picked up a fish burrito Sunday on my way home to SF. My thought was great fish burrito, yum healthy. I will admit it hit the spot, yet not quite what I had in mind.
White fish was the fish of choice. I was envisioning long fillets, this was more fish hunks. Â Wrapped in a tomato tortilla. Not what I was expecting, yet still good. Blk beans, rice and cheese.
All for $4.30. This price I can support, go local business!! They also BBQ oysters out the BBQ outside. Fish and chips looked killer!!! If we came back, i would for sure get the fish and chips!!!
Stopped by on a Monday afternoon on trip back to Bay Area from Pismo Beach for the weekend, I guess they weren't expecting much of a crowd, although quite of a touristy spot. The 3 servers were overwhelmed. Getting seated isn't a problem, getting service and then getting your food was. It took quite a while, and we hardly ordered (fish tacos and bowl of soup). I felt bad for the other parties that ordered after us (one was complaining about her sticky table). I expected a lot more, great view on the pier where you can see the "rock" but food was bad.
Maybe I'm spoiled by the yummy fish tacos at Rio Adobe in Cupertino, cause the ones at Rose's were bland and tasteless, I think they used a blend of tarter sauce on my mahi mahi and threw some cabbage on there. Wifey's clam chowder soup had a slight burnt taste to it. Server was nice enough to take it off the check after he called it "quality soup", but let's just say we will try a different place next time.
Other than that, Morro Bay was great tho'!
All I can say is I came in here after making a fairly large TO GO ORDER!!!!! AND THEY added in my tip to the bill. Â I did not notice this at first payed and went home and then wondered why our bill was $30 more than what we ordered.
The manager apologized and gave us coupons, credits, and what not but this is just ridiculous.
My wife and I live here and we enjoy supporting the local economy so we try to frequent local business's. That being said, out of all the restaurants here in town, this is the one we frequent the most. The food here is consistently good, the wait staff attentive, and the drinks are excellent. Amy is our fave server and Matt behind the bar makes a Manhattan that taste's like the one I make at home.
Be warned though. During the summer if you get here at dinner time you have to compete with the tourist for the tables inside. If you live here you know the summer can be cold and foggy and trying to enjoy a hot meal outside can be a bummer.
Worst lunch experience in a long time!!!!
On Sunday February 1, 2009 my family and I went up to Morro Bay for the day. Walking around we saw Rose's Landing and it looked like a real nice place. Boy was I wrong.
1st - The server/waiter (I hesitate to call her a waiter - she was a server) could not have been more disinterested. She was not rude - just totally disinterested.
2nd - I had the Shrimp and Lobster Taco's - it was most probably one of the worst meals I have had; bland, tasted like rubber mixed with paper and I actually think that eating rubber would have been better.
3rd - My 9 year old even commented on how bad her cheese sandwich and fries tasted - how do you screw up a cheese sandwich?
Please stay clear of this restaurant - they do not deserve to be called a restaurant. Compared to them Burger King is "fine dining"!
A good find to have a light dinner/lunch right on the water with the Morro Rock in the background. Check it out at sundown for a romantic evening. The food is good, but the killer garlic fries are OK Definitely not the best you can find. The location more than makes up for the average food. If you are in Morro Bay and want some casual dining with a killer view, than this is the place. Â I'll be back.
Review Source:We stopped here for lunch on a weekend getaway at Morro Bay. Like other restaurants right on the pier, this place offered seating with view of the bay. We had crab cakes and a bowl of chowder, and both were pretty decent but nothing really special. Crab cakes were swimming in a sauce and I really didn't like the sauce but crab cake itself was good. Fish and Chips looked pretty good too but we didn't feel like fried food so we passed on that. Pretty casual setting, reasonable price for food and beer menus.
Review Source:Great place for seafood. Â I went here quite some times for their all you can eat specials and again for a nice fancy dinner on my graduation weekend. Â
I think the best deal they have or had would be the All You Can Eat Crab Tuesdays. Â Just buckets and buckets of dungenous crab comin out is great. Â One caution though, easy on their clam chowder. While you're waiting for your crab, they tend to give it a lil extra time to get you worked and full off the bread and chowder before serving the crab whick will ultimately be the thing you'l be eating for at least an hour. Â But definitely, the crab is great, simply steamed and dipped in butter. Â Great with a nice cold beer on a summer day close to sunset.
Second best All you can eat would be the Clams and Oysters. Â I think this is a Monday special where they give you clams steamed in some nice broth that goes good with the bread, deep fried breaded clams, raw oysters, and baked creamy oysters which are just amazing, but by far the most filling selection. Â Oysters are very fresh and the clams are good too.
And third, on their specials for the week would be the All You Can eat Shrimp (Yes, i like all you can eat seafood, anywhere. You should read my all you can eat sushi buffet in Davis, CA) Â This place gives you coconut breaded fried shrimp, shrimp in some broth, and cocktail shrimp. Â I'd have to admit, this may not be the best all you can eat deal, but i guess it'd be a different story if you like shrimp. However, the shrimp they give isn't the large ones you tend to get in a Vegas or Reno Buffet, they are the medium size one which let you eat 2 for each bite. Â
And for my dinner, I've had the scallops wrapped in bacon. Â Think about hot dog wrapped in bacon. Â That already sounds good, but SCALLOP? Â omY! Â food heaven!. Â and these are not your dinky scallops, they are the giant like 2 inch diameter ones that are just rightly cooked with a sizzling bacon wrapped around it. Â But hey, its simple, its good, and if only i was not hungover from pregraduation night in SLO would i have enjoyed this fully. Â The plate came with like 7 or 8 of them and i ended up giving half of them to my family. Â DAMN alcohol! Â
And finally, i think the most under appreciated place in SLO would be Morro Bay. Â Sure the big stinking rock is not that great of a place to look at, but the bay side with all the shops and tiny malls are a great find and these restaurants get some of the freshest seafood around. Â Check my other review for Giovanni's which is like down the block from Rose's Landing.
I like Morro Bay, just didn't like the choices of restaurants within that area. I don't know what it was, but the variety and choices left me feeling limited. After walking up and down the pier, we settled with Roses' because it seemed reasonable in price and the menu seemed great. My husband ordered fish and chips (cuz you gotta have that if you are near any pier!) and I ordered fish tacos. I liked my fish tacos alot, my husband felt the fish and chips were way over rated. He ordered the three fish and chips platter and was done after one and mentioned it was too greasy and the batter was too thick. Roses should of considered to use Panko batter to have a lighter taste like the Elephant Bar does. We had to order a creme brulee for dessert to "wash" the grease down which btw was AWESOME!
At the inn we were staying, the host there recommended the Outrigger's as a better choice for Fish and Chips. But all in all, if you get other stuff besides the fish and chips, I think this place would have had more stars. Oh yeah, and they seemed a little under staffed there so be patient.
If you do like fish and chips with thick batter, then I believe they have all you can eat fish and chips on friday for $5.99.
We went looking for a great fish and chips place, but when our first choice closed early, we went looking elsewhere and ran into Rose's. Â We ordered some crab cakes, and two orders of their fish and chips.....
The crab cakes were very good, and at a decent price, 10, but our fish...now that was some damn good breaded fish! I normally never eat my fish breaded, but WOW!! So clean, crisp, and greasy, you have to wash it all down with a cold brewsky!! Â Loved this place!!!
Didn't eat here (and glad I didn't given the sight of the complimentary cheese bread that appeared to be discards from Domino's. Â As my boyfriend commented: I didn't know restaurants with $25 entrees served such bread) but was lured in by the "happy hour" sign out front. Â Boy was that a false pretense if ever I've heard of one. Â So the happy hour consists of a marginal fraction off the domestic drafts that includes classy choices like Bud and Miller Lite (no offense, but that kind of happy hour choice makes for an unhappy hour as far as I'm concerned). Everything else, including all mixed drinks and cocktails are full price. Â BOOOO.
That said, the view is pretty gorgeous and the servers didn't seem to mind that we were just having drinks despite it being prime dinner hour.
We hung out here during happy hour on a Friday afternoon and had a pretty decent time. Â They've got some pretty good drinks there and friendly bartenders. Â I was disappointed that they do not have any draught beers. Â They have a selection of bottles, but if I'm going out to drink I want something that I couldn't go out to get at the supermarket.
Despite this, their appetizer food is good (we didn't try any of the entrees, but they did look good). Â Their bloody mary oyester half shells are pretty killer with really fresh oyeters combined with a tangy sauce. Â What is REALLY killer though are their fries. Â They're perfectly fried, so that the outside is crispy with just a hint of fluffy in the middle. Â They don't call their fries Killer by name for no reason. Â Their garlic/ oil topping mighit as well come with a complementary quadruple bypass surgery- tasty as hell, but left a pool of garlicky oil at the bottom of the fry basket. Â I was actually surprised that it all didn't seep out the bottom of the basket.
This definitely isn't the place to settle if you're looking to drink all night, but definitely a good stop if you're doing a Morro Bay pub crawl. Â But in all fairness, this is a family restaurant, and hopefully I can give more stars after I try their dinner.
