Friggin Fantastic... Extra Salty Awesomeness.....  One of the things I miss is a good old fashioned dive bar.  When we walked in, the place reeked of cig smoke and beach.  Bar Rescue would of had a heart attack at all the stuff on the ceiling, the dark lighting and more than likely the patrons.  We loved them.  Potential Fire Hazard.. probably, potential fun factor.. off the charts.

This is a bar where locals seemed to hang out and are very welcoming.  We went up to the bar to grab our drinks, which were not over priced.  Don't ask for cucumbers for your Hendricks gin and tonic... seriously.  Well, Suzie asked and the bartender and her just laughed.  We found a great group of older ladies, sitting around a large table, cackling and smoking butts.  I noticed that one of the patrons was seriously slumping in her chair.  And they were all laughing and gesturing towards her.  Upon further inspection, I discovered that actually, it was a dummy, which they had dragged in with them to keep them company.  An entire bevy of jokes come to mind.. .including, I guess he was the designated driver.  They were having the time of their life and lifted the mood factor of Salty's wonderfully.

They have a couple of pool tables and have a karaoke night once a week.  That would be a blast to be present at.  All in all, the smoke eventually got to us and we heading out after an hour of so.  I hope they never change a thing.

We went here because of Yelp and because it looked like a cool dive bar. I think we might have been the only ones there that weren't locals but it was awesome. I loved the atmosphere and it was cheap ass drinks. The margaritas were strong and delicous. She made them herself, no mixes, which always awesome! The only downside is there is only one tiny restroom and it's damn near impossible to get to. I had to make a trip along the perimeter of the entire place to get to it each time. But that wouldn't stop me from going back for sure!

We really enjoyed our visit to the Salty Dog. Nice shuffle board, 2 dart boards, 2 pool tables, televisions, cheap drinks, and a good mix of regulars/locals/vacationers to Port A. We unfortunately didn't stay for karaoke much to my dismay but I hear it's scrumtulescent.

It has all the symptoms of a total dive bar which I absolutely love. There's decorations all over the place and it wreaks of character. Nothing better than enjoying my frosty beer, smoking my cigarettes and shooting pool.

    Check it out for sure.

Not a fan.  The bartender was alright but my drink was either watery or REALLY strong so there was no consistency throughout the night.  I have been coming to the island for my entire life and the ONLY place locals have ever been rude to me was at Salty Dog.  They weren't serving any bar food at all and the drinks were overpriced.

This is the best karoke joint I've ever been to!  There music selection is bomb and there's such a good mix of people there.  I've been three times this year and everyone who sings, knows what they're doing which may be intimidating for some drunks, but it's all a good time.

Rumor has it, that they have the best Bloody Mary in ever, but I can say their salty dog is delicious and I'm not usually a fan.  The bartender can be kind of rough if you don't know exactly what you want, but she sure can sing the hell out of any song that's played.

The only downfall of this place and I guess every place in Port Aransas is that everyone chain smokes inside which is absolutely disgusting!!!

I had an absolute great time at the Dog...the bartender was incredibly cute and helpful. The locals were friendly and gave us great tips on exploring the island.  The place was clean and the price was right.  I was very surprised to look up and find it incredibly busy on a Wednesday night. This place is quite a gem.  I will go back frequently even during the off season.

I have always had a bit of a crush on the VERY SEXY, OLDER BARTENDER CHICK WITH A BODY TO DIE FOR! "TO die for" is one of those sickening quotes I used to always object to others using or saying and damnit, now Im saying it! But I'm describing a women's bod-not a plate of spahgetti or pastries...

I like Salty Dog and alwayd have...I love DIVE BARS and always have!

The Rainbow Lounge in Houston-God I miss that place...

The coolest bar on the Texas Riviera! I've been going to Salty's since I could drink.  It's got the typical island motiff but there is something about Salty's that makes you wanna stay here and throw your responsibilities to the wind.  The staff is super friendly and accomadating.  Another cool thing is the Salty dog is dog friendly.  We had been on the beach all day and had the dog with us.  We were gonna have a shot and leave because my friends had never been to the salty dog.  The bartender asked why are you leaving so quickly and I said we gotta go.  We got a dog in the truck we can't leave out too long.  She goes to hell with that bring him in.  As long as your dog gets along with other dogs then salty's is very pet friendly.  What's better than chillin in an awesome bar with your dog?! I always try to go to Salty's everytime I'm in P.A. and you should too!

Ahhh the Salty Dog... the illegitimate love child of a dive bar, honky tonk, and barrels full of awesomeness. Cold Beer and Karaoke mesh salty locals and drunken tourists perfectly.

It is a dark, dirty hole in the wall with tons of island motif covering the walls. This is a place where you walk in covered in sand and feel right at home. If you want to become well received walk in and buy the bar a round of tutors (buttery nipple-esque shots that come in a test tube). Don't worry if you come in early there is generally anywhere from 5-12 people in the bar and the shots are only a dollar. Besides how many times can you get away with buying a round for the bar, and not try to skip out on the tab.

Honestly this place is one the highlights of any trip to Port A. We always have a good time doing karaoke and acting an absolute fool.

I highly recommend this place to anyone wanting to get a real sense of local flavor in the midst of all the tourist traps.

From what I remember of the evening, good karaoke and pretty cheap beer.  Definitely be there for the karaoke.

Best Salty Dog of my life.  Made with fresh squeezed grapefruit juice and poured in a TALL frosted mug.  Try it.

We went midday and sat at the bar with the locals and a group of passing bikers.  We were in town for a wedding that was happening that evening, and I will admit that it was hard for my gal pals and I to leave for the ceremony.  One lovely older gentlemen could not understand why we were letting one get away, why would we allow her to get married? The bartender was friendly and witty.  I tried to convince him to hire me on the spot to tend, he seemed more willing than not to give me a go at it.  Unfortunately, the commute is 1,840 miles too many.

The Salty Dog is definitely something to be experienced. We stopped by just to have a couple of beers after dinner one night, but had no idea we'd be getting so much free entertainment along with those beers.

The joint is called a "honkey-tonk" so we were expecting country music when we walked in, but instead were greeted by some of the worst R&B ever recorded. It didn't really fit in with the feel of the bar or the patrons and was really weird.

The bartender was a hot mess of a woman with some serious attitude. When we ordered beers she asked us if we wanted them "dressed" and when we looked at her dumbfounded, she told us that it meant with salt and lime (duh!). Excuse me, did I order a margarita? I have never been asked this before, and was wondering if this was a Salty Dog thing.

The bar not only has pool tables and video games, but it has shuffleboard and air hockey as well. Score! We played a couple of games of air hockey and took in the scene. There was a very interesting mix of locals and tourists, and folks seemed to be getting mighty drunk. After a couple of beers we were ready to hit the road, but when the karaoke crew rolled in, we decided to stick around for a bit. One of the guys setting up was named "Scooter" so we figured it was probably going to be seriously entertaining. We watched a few of the performances, and saw one serious gem - a really drunk redneck singing "A Country Boy Can Survive". Dude was so sauced he couldn't read the lyrics on the screen and was just singing the song as he knew it, with his own version of the lyrics. It was awesome.

The Salty Dog is worth checking out. I heard some locals talking, and it sounded like they have karaoke every night at 9pm. If you're in Port Aransas, stop in for a beer and some free entertainment. You won't be disappointed.

Ditto Kevin!  This place is a piece of work...  I stopped in for a beer at about 5 pm and it was like an episode of the twilight zone.  Next thing I know - shots are for the entire bar courtesy of a drunk mess.  I will be back.

Oh - and very telling was the matches.  They're for a bail bondsman.

(and they have darts and a pool table...)

I've had some times at the Salty Dog that were completely surreal.  Like, surreal to the point that if Salvador Dali would've walked in off the street, he would've had to sit, sit down, lest he completely lose it.  'Cause after you've seen the Salty Dog on a raucous night, melting clocks just don't do it for you anymore, if you know what I mean.

I've been several times, and it seems that place is a mixing bowl of locals and out-of-towners.  All I know is this:  if you're in Port A and the Salty Dog is having karaoke night, GO.  GO. I guarantee you this trip will not be ordinary.

One night in particular, we were treated to all of these separate audiences, and most were happening simultaneously:  a table full of blotto bow-heads, alternately cheering for anything and everything in particular.  One of them took a fantastic non-choreographed pratfall on stage.  To their right, a table full of tattoo artists, who, as I recall, were singing much lighter fare than you would've thought.  They looked like they'd rock Ozzy, they chose something like Bolton.  You know, books and covers.

To the far left, a large gal in a cowboy hat with a fondness for Melissa Ethridge covers who had taken it upon herself to charge the stage and take over the mike whenever a singer didn't meet her standards.  This happened often and with varying levels of success. And to the back left, a recent mom who was on her first trip out of the house since the baby and who, much to our chagrin, and was writhing all over the pool table like she'd been inhabited by the ghost of Tawny Kitaen - who you may note - is not dead.

At one point, one member of our party said with equal parts horror and fascination:  "I'm afraid to look...anywhere."

It was the kind of night we've talked about ever since, and even compared with other, more tame evenings at the same spot, the Salty Dog always delivers. The service is attentive and the patrons, well, you've heard about those.  They're better than reality TV could've dreamed up.  And these are the episodes I'd relive time and again, and have.
