Sammy's is VERY outdated & is in desperate need of a make over, with that said the food isn't bad!  The salad bar is decent with a reasonable selection on it.  We had chicken fried steak, it wasn't the best I've ever had but not the worst either.  The fried zucchini however was really good, it was not pre made/frozen!

The service was good - the staff were all friendly & helpful.

We stopped by on our way home from Garner State Park. First impression was ok. The restaurant really needs some updating. I'm not sure if its a small town thing, but the waiter kept asking my husband if he needed anything, but completely ignoring me. And I was the one paying. I didn't hold a grudge and still gave him a nice tip :) food was really tasty. I ordered the pork chop, which was moist and perfectly seasoned. My husband had the chicken fried steak. The gravy was awesome. As for the salad bar, while it was ok, it was very misleading with their local market statement. It was all grocery store bought stuff. I'm a farmers market girl. I know that carrots, broccoli and mushrooms are available at local farmers market currently and what the difference is in taste. However, I would go back for the food

I have been twice and both times I had great food at a great price! We can eat there for two under $20!!! I recommend going for breakfast and getting breakfast tacos. They are big and cheap!!! I also recommend getting some pie for dessert! I got the german chocolate pie and it was amazing!!!

Though i drop by here pretty frequently, I don't often review because the food is acceptable, as is the service.

On 2/22, I wasn't too impressed.  While the appetizers and salad were very good, I got the chicken fried steak, which was woefully overcooked (almost seemed re-heated).  The other two plates on the table were acceptable.

    The service was sub-par.

OK Sammy's, this is said with love, compassion, and from a true friend:

Given the new competition in town these past few years, it's time to up the ante.

#1 Redecorate The 1980's stencil and bad floor tiles has got to go. The small wooden tables and upright booths, need to go. The old beat up menus...guess what...need to go! And that's the short list. Rethink the salad bar as well.

#2 Let's talk employees. I feel lucky to of had my server tonight, she was a gem! And I think her name rhymed with gem. Very sweet girl. It's the employees I saw at the front of the restaurant, the high school aged ones. As we walked in and were waiting to be seated, they noticed us but ignored us and continued to talk and laugh with their friend that was seated at the bar. It wasn't until our server came by and saw that we needed to be seated and gave us some attention.

Once we sat down I watched as other patrons came in and saw this same thing repeated. I could see young employees ignore those at the door and talk to some boy at the counter until the hostess came to seat them. On that note, consider a dress code.

#3 The food. I had the Charbroiled Chicken sandwich and potato salad. It was good but it could use some pizazz! Another person at my table had the open roast beef sandwich w/ mashed potatoes and gravy and it came with a salad. The salad was an afterthought to say the most about it. It was a very small amount of lettuce with enough ranch dressing on the side so really you just served ranch dressing soup w/ a side of lettuce. The marinara sauce for the mozzarella sticks was just salsa. There was NOTHING marinara about that sauce because...it was salsa! Lastly (though I could go on I'm just decidedly wrapping this up) the strawberry pie was a thin amount of strawberry and a tub of cool whip on top. There wasn't much strawberry to that pie.

                                      Sammy's....my dear, dear Sammy's: It's time.

Outstanding breakfast! Everything was perfect. See the photo!

Two nicely done eggs, hash browns prepared from fresh potatoes (these are not the frozen ones from a food service), and the Alsatian sausage.  By the way, the Alsatian sausage has quite a different flavor than the typical breakfast sausage, and it's a BIG patty!

The biscuits were big, fluffy, and fresh.  The waitress brought plenty of butter and jam, and honey as well.  I used peach jam on half of one biscuit, honey on the other, and brought the second biscuit home for a snack latter.

By the way - a little "secret tip" for you - they have cookies and (sometimes) other good things from the bakery across the road.  Once again, these are all freshly prepared on-site, not from a food service company.

    Enjoy!

Try the Fish Tacos, crispy corn tortilla shell with choice of fried cod or fried catfish, three to an order.  And get the onion rings, really good.

We stopped for breakfast on our way to Concan. This is your typical diner with greasy food; however, the taste was lacking. We all stuck to the simple breakfast selection items.

Terrible food. I've been told Sammy's is the place to go and I'm not sure why maybe because people are afraid to try something different. This place is below average. Not my choice when eating in Castroville.

If you like your B.L.T. served on cold, stale toast, with only two slices of bacon, wilted, rust colored lettuce, a slab of mostly green tomato and mustard, you'll love this joint.  MUSTARD? REALLY? I'll be honest here. I come from The United States, not Texas. A B.L.T consists of THREE slices of WARM toast, EIGHT slices of bacon, multiple slices of RED tomato, FRESH lettuce and MAYONNAISE. Usually they are five or six inches tall, not flat like a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. When I questioned my server about the mustard, and told her it was not listed on the menu, she offered to get me a replacement sandwich with mayo. The sandwich returned on the same cold toast, same rusty lettuce, same bland tomato, missing a slice of bacon and slathered in Miricle Whip. Well, Miracle Whip is NOT mayonnaise. I poked and prodded the sandwich a few minutes, then gave up on it. The waitress asked if I would like a doggie bag. I told her I didn't think I knew of a dog that would eat it.
    Bon Appétit!!!

Came here with my brother for early dinner! I was on a diet at the time and couldn't enjoy all the great fried foods Sammy's had to offer.  I had the salad bar! Yummy great salad! The place needs some serious updating and remodeling!  I would definitely go back again!

Sammy's is really good. The bread they get is from Haby's Alsatan Bakery that is located right across HWY 90. Also, the meat they cook is from Dziuk Meat Market that is just a little ways down from Sammy's. Every single time I have been there the service has been great and the food delicious. If you find yourself in Castroville, TX Sammy's is a must stop to sit and eat.

Second stop for National Nacho Day.  Not as good as the first stop but a close second.  What I love about these nachos is the onions.  The put chopped onions in them and boy does that make a taste difference.  They are good strictly Tex not much Mex.  If you are in Castroville you will not be disappointed.  Where to next?
