Update - August 2010
The Scene is now closed. The night club had its last night of business on Saturday, August 14. The bar's owner, Mollie P. passed away a few weeks earlier. The building is undergoing some repair work and will likely be put up for sale. It's unclear how the building will be used in the future.
Chances don't seem very good The Scene will re-open, much less another country music oriented establishment. C.W. Scooters and Cadillac Ranch are getting most of that crowd now. The Scene was at least a basic alternative for people wanting to be around a more grown up crowd. Fights were rare and there was no cover charge.
Back in the early 1990s, The Scene was one of Lawton's hottest night spots. It had a pop/R&B/techno format back then. That music format can attract big crowds. Unfortunately it also tends to attract the worst kind of crowds as well. The place became dangerous and many of the folks who only wanted to have fun and dance left for other places.
The club experimented off and on with various music mixes over the years. The attempts at more "pop" and "R&B" play lists always met with scary results.
About four years ago The Scene switched to a mostly country music format with a block of R&B/dance genre stuff thrown in on occasion, but not nearly as often as such music is played in other local night clubs. The Scene was gaining in popularity but never got back to the level it had in the 1990s.
