You're paying for the views and that's one of the few things I actually liked about this place. We sat on the patio outside and had great service from our waitress throughout the meal. I ordered the"jumbo perch" for a whopping $21, but there was nothing jumbo about it!!... $21 got me 4 bland pieces of perch. We notified our waitress and you could tell I wasn't the first person to feel cheated, as she agreed and offered 2 more pieces at no charge (great service!). After letting the manager know how I felt, he wasn't friendly or professional at all.. That was the last straw for me. I won't be back here! for less money, you can get better perch at Clementines down the street.

Not a terrible experience but definitely not a great one. Our server was nice and speedy. You could tell she was following a script and going through the motions though. None the less the bad review is for the food and atmosphere, not our service per say. The decor is fragmented- no real theme or overall flow of decor. There was a lot of different colors and  patterns going on. The paper menus were stained and torn. Would be worth it to invest in newer, laminated menus that can be wiped down.

I ordered the Schu's black and blue salad which had steak on it. I asked what temp a pink but not bloody would be and she said medium, so I trusted her and went with that. My husband got their Reuben. After ordering our meal she upsold an app, spin dip, saying that it was delicious. We indulged and ordered some.

The spinach dip came out and it was rather bland and disappointing. We munched on it for awhile just to tide us over till our dinner got to the table. It came out shortly after. As she set down my salad she said something along the lines of "the cook assured me there is some pink in your steak but it doesn't seem like it. I guess you'll just have to roll with it." As she set it down I noticed how over-cooked and small the steak was. I tried to eat a bit of it but it was well done and very tough and bland. I pushed the steak to the side and munched on the salad, which was  nothing to write home about. She checked back and asked how it was, which I'm not one to complain or send food back. So I mumbled a meager it's fine and she sauntered off. Being a fellow server myself I know what "it's fine" means. Usually a unhappy guest who isn't one to complain or want to cause a fuss. At this point you'd think she would have realized that I was  unhappy with my meal. I pushed it to the side and ate some of my husband's fries. He also mentioned that his Reuben had an off taste to it but still ate it anyway. A little while later with almost all the spinach dip and my barely untouched salad left on the table she asked us if we were ready for the check, which we were. She should have noticed though that the salad was untouched and asked if there was  anything wrong with it, instead she asked me if I wanted a box. I usually only complain if the server realizes I'm unhappy. While she might not be that observant she still did an ok job. Overall the meal was disappointing and I doubt we'll be back. Later that night my husband got sick. Glad now I didn't eat my salad.

All our entrees were bland.  Thai shrimp is one if the few flavorful items.
The food was overpriced but you are paying for the view.  If you sit on the patio on a summer day the low grade food is passable.  You are paying chicago prices for a below average dinner.

The food is ok but the service was pretty poor. I never got a water refill and we had to flag down another server for some side sauce because we never saw ours until our check came.

Good food and nice restaurant overall. I have been coming here since they opened many years ago and have always had positive experiences. Extensive craft beer list is a big plus. Scallops are large and tasty. Close to the lake and located in downtown St. Joe.

Wonderful service, great burger, great beer selection.  This place was hopping tonight.

To celebrate my daughter's great report card she got to choose where she wanted to eat tonight.  She chose Schu's in downtown St. Joseph.  We had not been here since the summer and I was surprised how busy they were for such a chilly evening.

We were immediately greeted and seated by the hostess.  Within a minute we were greeted by our cheerful server.  She was very knowledgeable of the menu and offered some great suggestions.

I had a Schu's Lager, which was pretty light and the old summer standby Bell's Oberon.  But the two real highlight was the burger.  I ordered the Schu's Angus Burger.  It was a simple hamburger, lettuce, tomato, onion but it was perfectly cooked and seasoned.  It tasted like a good old fashioned backyard cookout burger.  The bun was fresh and lightly grilled.  Hamburger perfection.  Paired with a side of their homemade kettle chips that were crispy and flavorful.

The kids menu is complete.  My daughter loved the mini-corn dogs and the Oreos for dessert.

Schu's has one of the best views of Lake Michigan of any St. Joseph restaurants, a great menu and pleasant staff.

I have been going to Schu's since they opened...and even after 15 years of living outside of the area, I am happy to report that the food is still as good and consistent as it was when they opened.  As for service...it has its ups and downs, but what do you expect from a small tourist town?  High volume summers keep the place jumping...and they try hard.  That said, at times you need to be patient....but try to enjoy the great views of the lake and some time dining out...and you will end up enjoying it.

I went here over Thanksgiving with my cousin. They have beer sampler which was kind of fun.  It's not the most spectacular restaurant by any means but the food was good and reasonably priced.  I would go back, but I would also like to try some of the other restaurants in the little shopping are behind it. The bartender was cool too but lacked the experience with the brews on tab to provide a good sampling. If you're looking to try and get educated, just say no. If you know your pallet for brew and you can tell what's what, the sampler could be a fun way to switch it up.

We have been stopping here for years as we travel to Chicago, not any more. We were not allowed to sit at a table where you can view the lake, it was noon and where told it was to be kept clean for  dinner. Being a vegetarian the menue is limited, but I liked the mushroom resoto, it is no longer available, tried the mac and cheese, was runny and no flavor not worth the money. Sorry about their decline.

I'm surprised at all the negative reviews of this restaurant.  The bachelorette party group I was with decided to come here for dinner before we got the night started. Before even going in, we asked the hostess if it would be okay that we were coming here wearing penis headbands (there were only two girls that were) and she said it was fine. We sit down for dinner, really aren't talking much louder than other people, and the manager comes by and tells us to take them off because we've offended a family there and they left. Boo hoo. I heard a dad tell his kids they were rabbit ears and all was well with them.

Later, the manager came by and told us it was fine and that he was really sorry, but he was told that he had to tell us something about it but really, he wanted us to enjoy our time and not to worry about it. Our server was also really great and she put up with a big group of girls who were all over the place. All of our checks were separate and she was great about the whole thing. I gave her a good tip for being such a good sport.

The food was pretty good. You can get some decent food for a good price here. My burger and fries were great and a lot of the stuff the other girls got looked delish too. We enjoyed our experience here and would come back again.

As promised, a great view of Lake Michigan as the sun was setting, local wines and famous baked potato soup - all awesome. But the waiter mistook me and my Dad for a husband and wife, and well - yuk. Guess my Dad is convincing as the kind of guy who would date his nurse (there was a convalescent home across the street) but really? Never assume. Staff needs extra hospitality training, stat!

    Salmon BLT:-)

Been "doing Shu's" since Shuler's etc.   Good food, atmosphere is good and if you are lucky enough to score a window seat, you can see the bluff goings on and the lake.

We dined before the evening rush, so we didn't have to wait and got to sit outside. We started with the loaded potato soup which we got without bacon. It was very good! I could have eaten it for a meal. My husband got the Ahi Tuna Salad. I got the Vegetarian Burger with Fries. It was all very good and the service was great!

Menu doesn't stretch the kitchen very much, but the food was tasty, the service attentive and the prices reasonable. Needs some better signature dishes, but the location is great and the atmosphere quaint.

Food was ok.  Good location. If you're looking for a place in St Joseph your options are limited.

I don't think this place is that terrible.

This place boasts of views of Lake Michigan but indoors I think it's only a portion of the place that can actually see bits of Lake Michigan.

We stopped here for lunch on a Saturday afternoon and there was no wait.. I feel like their menu is missing something or I probably thought their lunch menu should be bigger than 20 items.

I wanted something light so I had the crabcake appetizer and my husband had the burge The crabcakes were pretty tasty. They weren't the best but they weren't the worst I've ever had. It came with some mango salad which was blech. The mango dressing was just didn't go well with the fruit. I wish I had the burger like my husband did. The bun was really soft and the burger was grilled well. The fries were some battered fries and they were addicting to eat.  I kind of wish I had his meal.

The service was prompt so nothing to complain about there. If I return to St Joseph's Mi, I'm not sure if I'd return to Schu's grill.

Loud and obnoxious atmosphere. Overall taste of food mediocre at best.  The chefs are amateurs at best, hiding a pile of wasabi on the ahi salad plate was fucking mean as hell!  I thought my dad was gonna die!  THATS FUCKING WRONG!! If i ever come back to St. Joseph i will never eat here again. The circle of trust has been broken. Plus the service was awful. It took 20 mins plus for our drinks to come. Laaaaaaame!!!

I have been to Schu's Grill & Bar a handful of times both for breakfast and dinner. The service isnt bad but isnt stellar and the food is below average for what you pay for but not bad.

The al fresco dining is what brings me here and the beautiful views of the sunset.

We eat once in a while at Schu's, it seems to be packed all the time in the summer. I frankly don't see what all the hubbub is all about. Drinks are expensive, food is ok, but just ok; there is nothing that I've had there that really says, Wow, that was great. We leave and usually there's not one comment on the meal we had, except that we had to wait forever to get a table. It has to be the location, because nothing else really shines. This place could be awesome, especially because of its location. Anyways I digress. If ya have too, Schu's is ok, but there are a lot better eating establishments around the area, just not with the view of lake Michigan Schu's does have.

The POTATO SOUP gave me FOOD POISONING!!!

I am CERTAIN it came from the soup.  I was with my family all day, eating the same things.  The only thing I ate that no one else did was the potato soup.  I will never eat there again.

My family lives in St. Joe and I am home regularly. It was late and Schu's was one of the only places open that night. I have been here a few times and it is mediocre at best. For the price, you are better off going somewhere else.

After racing across the lake Friday night and taking a nap on the boat we were searching for some breakfast. Stopped in at Schu's after being told they were a great breakfast place only to discover, as our server put it,

"the kitchen staff is so "over" breakfast they have moved on to lunch"

at least 15 min before the official change over. Big bummer as that was the reason we were there.

Well we ordered off their lunch menu which was your standard fare of sandwiches, burgers etc. nothing exceptional but not bad just an average sandwich. No one raved about their meal and no on complained.

Service... I have had better. Perhaps it was the crush of having 90 boats pull in from Chicago after racing all night looking for some good food that overwhelmed them, not sure.

Loved the margaritas on a hot day.   Friendly lady bartender.  Ahi tuna salad was as good as any I've ever had.  Nice location not far from the water.

The view is alright, if you a lucky enough to get a table at a window.  The decor is nice, lots of wood.  The menu is overpriced.  The server we had was nice, but clueless.

One of us had the Ahi tuna and it was sitting in the wasabi, instead of on the side where you can choose how hot/how much you want.  Another chose the house salad, which was nothing more than iceberg with one cherry tomato and a couple of onion slices. Whoopie. I had to send back my fish and chips because it was undercooked, then it came back exactly the same way two minutes later. I think either the fryer was under temperature or the cook was lazy.  I refused it (something I never do) and had a cup of soup.

Management was nice, comped my soup. Okay, good move, but train the kitchen staff on how to fry fish please.  It's Michigan!

We were in St. Joseph this past weekend, and were looking for someplace for a late lunch.  We saw Schu's Grill and Bar...and I was in the mood for bar food, so we wandered in.

If you're looking for a dive bar, this isn't it.  Actually, I found the service (and attitude of the server) to be quite pretentious.  If that's your "thing", you'll love this place, but it wasn't quite what I expected.

That said, the food was pretty darned good...I'd give the food alone 3 (or maybe a bit more) stars.  I had the pulled pork and it was EXCELLENT...nice, smoky flavor and a generous portion.  The fries were just so so.

Our waitress never stopped by the table to check on our meal, nor did sh offer any drink refills.

The food was good.  But, based on the service, I'll choose someplace else next time I'm in St. Joseph.

One of the best meals in town.  Ahi tuna salad was delicious. Great kids meals for under $5.  Don't pass this one up.

I went here with my wife and in-laws for dinner one August Saturday evening. We wanted to sit outside and the wait was about 45 minutes for a table of four. We hung out in the bar beforehand and I immediately noticed their nice selection of local brews. They also had free popcorn for bar patrons. Pretty cool.

Once we got seated, our server was extremely friendly. We ordered the  spinach artichoke dip appetizer, which was pretty good. I ordered the summer chicken salad, which was a bed of greens topped with oranges, blueberries, strawberries, and chicken salad. It was quite delicious. My father-in-law tried to potato soup at other Yelpers' suggestion, and liked it okay but said it certainly wasn't the best he's ever had. I tried it and agreed. My mother in law had the Perch, which was perfectly breaded and fried. It tasted very fresh. My wife ordered the margherita flatbread, which looked a little greasy to me but she said she liked it alright. The view from the outdoor patio was decent, and we sat just in time to watch the sun set. Schu's also had a nice atmosphere inside--nothing too fancy, but comfortable. I think the best part about it is its location. It is walking distance to beach and carousel, so if you're down there for a day and want some decent food for dinner (at a decent price--not too cheap but not expensive) then stop in Schu's.

Great location & more importantly locally owned/operated.  But in the end, Schus is just okay.  The food isn't bad and I didn't think the prices were out of line.

Though it's petty, Schus is no more of a bar than an Applebees.  Technically this is a restaurant with a small bar/waiting area in the middle.  Plus, Schus closes crazy early.....for a bar.

I will come  back to Schus for lunch on a nice summer day, but if it's past 6pm, I'll walk around the corner to the Pump House Grille.  I actually prefer their "bar" a little more.

Have to say there were more negatives than positives here. LONG wait, I'm pretty sure we got skipped over as I had to ask the hostesses when we were up next and they asked what name I used (just after I told them). We were then called immediately.

I suspect this place is so popular due to the lack of options. Seems like many restaurants in the area have closed, at least according to the info the local hotels (Hampton Inn and Marriott Courtyard) provide. Chose to sit outside, but probably not a good idea, given the sun sets on that side. Still very warm and not shaded.

As for the food & drink, we had a couple of Bell's beers at the bar. When we were seated, I ordered one of the seafood chowders and a shrimp flatbread, along with a glass of Pinot Grigio. The flatbread was better than the chowder, but had more too much pineapple and carrots for my taste.  My husband had the walleye and enjoyed it.

I have to change my review due to the ridiculously long wait for food at this place....if it happens one or two times I just figure it's an off day but after the fourth time I am pretty sure they need some management/kitchen changes to keep operating successfullyTheir food is still tasty and the location is great but who wants a 2.5 hour lunch in the middle of their beach day?

Good atmosphere, friendly service.  My husband had the Michigan Cherry Salad and liked it very much.  Our little one had the Crispy Chicken Drummies and was surprised that they had actual chicken bones in the drumsticks; we had to explain that these were real chicken legs instead of fast food "shaped" chicken.  He said the flavor was very good.  We all enjoyed our meals, and would definitely return.

First off the potato soup is some of the best i have ever had, that and the crispy chicken salad was amazing but they changed their menu and the crispy chicken salad got the axe :(. I still love to come here for the potato soup.

I have and some other items here and they are hit and miss, they do have daily specials and most are very good. I don't care for the new lunch items they have on the menu after it got changed most where on the appetizer list before.

ok were do I begin. Meet my wife here for lunch 11 years ago before we went to sign the paper work for our new home.the burgers then were ok but was charged for every refill of pop were had .
So we decided to try it again . she had gotten a $50 gift certificate for $25 BUCKS . well I'm glad we did not pay full price we each had the perch dinner . for 18 bucks 7 small pieces of fish. the crust was oily and fell off the fish .no taste or flavor. the menu is old and stuffy. they really need to get a new young chief.nothing seems to be fresh . Plus they do not sell Anhauser Bush products? NO BUD ? whats up with that. their localion is the only thing they have going for them. So for me this was STRIKE TWO . maybe I'll try again in another 11 years. but with food prices the way they are I hate wasting good money on poor non tasty food

I'm not a local, but I have been going to southwest Michigan countless times for several years now.  First of all, you have to understand that almost all the food options around here are pretty "meh" (I hate that term, actually),  and this place is right on the average line for the area, vacillates slightly above and below.  The best it ever is is slightly above an experience you could have at a good "Fridays" ; the worst is fairly accurate as outlined by the other reviewers here. Oh yeah and southwest Michigan is rarely cheap,  even outside of the touristy areas. Best thing about the place is probably its distinctive raised bar area. No kidding you can't see the beach from the patio area; did you not notice the bluff and amount of distance to the lake before you walked in??

This place was overpriced and wayyy overrated.

We sat outside. There were 8 of us and we moved the tables so we could all sit together, but this passive-aggressive manager talking like the boss in Office Space asked us if, um, we could move our tables back to the way they were, that would be greeeeaaaaaat.

The food took absolutely FOREVER to come. My friend and I split a waffle and eggs benedict that came with crab. The waffle was dry and not warm enough, but whatever. The benedict was a nightmare. First, the eggs were overcooked so the yolk was nearly hard-boiled instead of runny. The whole thing was a soggy mess and the crab didn't help. It just added to the price.

So, with lame service, lame food and a patio you can't even enjoy with your friends, what's the point?

I have been coming to St. Joseph for years and usually stop in at least once on each trip to Schu's.  Pretty good food, nice outdoor seating and great service.  Unfortunately they can get fairly busy but you can't fault a place for being successful, right?

For family dining, this place is one of the better places to go in town.  I loved the outdoor seating too, with a great view of the lake.  Nice place to go for sunset drinks!

Everything looked so delicious on the menu. The fried perch was amazing and not oily at all. The Ahi tuna sandwich that I had was huge and tasty and comes with a heap of rice pilaf. My only complaint is that the buns were too soft and the tuna was a little overcooked eventhough I asked for medium rare. They also serve a variety of local beers, perfect to end my meal. As for the atmosphere, it reminded me of a seaside resort that I visited a couple of years ago. Very relaxing and cozy.

Decent food, but nothing to write home about. Great service too.  I had a pizza from the appetizer menu and my mom had a burger.  The atmosphere was nice.  This would be a great night spot if it were in a major town.  It has a Clyde's vibe to it (DC restaurant chain).  I'd come again if i am ever in St. Joe's again.

Best during the week when they have drink specials and it's not so crowded.  The place kinda has a "Cheers" atmosphere going as well as having Bell's on tap.

Food is pretty good, but when you're swillin' beers, the popcorn machine totally works.

The outside seating in Summer with the view makes this place the place to go to for drinks.
