Shaw's is an outstanding, classic-style steak house.
Not exactly cozy nor comfortable in an endearing way but, outstanding in it's own right.
Wait staff service is excellent.
Bar service should be commended on their mixology prowess.
The relish tray appetizer is a nice touch.
Salad dressings are obviously created in house, the quality and flavors are excellent.
Never had a bad steak in many, many visits.
Side dishes could use an updated selection however, still very satisfying.
I would highly recommend this place to others as definitely worth a visit!
What can I say, its the best Steak place in town. We go here for most of our special occasions, it definitely is our first choice when we have a special event. It is pricey, but definitely worth the money for the quality. At this point in time, I am going to recommend this place above The Hitching Post & Jockos. Â I would not have stated this a few years ago, but now I would say Shaws really does have and cook the best meat.
My husband and I usually order the filet mignon. I would say its the best I've had...ever. I don't say that lightly! SO juicy I cant even get myself to try something else on the menu. For appetizers to share with friends/family, we usually get the sauteed mushrooms as well as the linguica. Both to die for and worth getting if you are a fan of either.
If you haven't been, GOOOOO!! If you've been there, then you already know what I'm talking about here.
I had a mixed experience at Shaw's. Â We went there while in town visiting relatives. Â It was just my wife and I. Â We were celebrating our anniversary. Â We had a good experience in the restaurant. Â The service was very good and I had the Tri tip because I had read so much about it. Â It was cut in big slices, but was very tender and tasty.
Since we had a good experience in the restaurant we decide to stay and have a few drinks in the bar. Â It was the Saturday before Halloween so a lot of customers were in costume which was fun. Â We were there for over two hours and never had a server come to our table. Â They would look at our table and see that our drinks were empty, but would never come over to server us. Â I had to go to the bar three times to order drinks. Â They would only pay attention to the regulars that were there. Â Maybe that is why they only had 12 customers on a Saturday night at 10:30 PM. Â Worst bar experience ever. Â The female bartender was dressed as batman and was yelling out that she wanted to be called Bat Bitch! Â After sitting there for over two hours I had know problem calling her Bat Bitch. We were going to stay for the music, but the service was so bad it wasn't worth it.
Unfortunately because of the bar experience I would never go back to the restaurant.
Went to Shaws on a Friday night. Had always heard good things about the food. We arrived at about 8:30 and had a 15 minute wait.
Our sever, Carl, was great, and professional.
The Ceasar salad was a joke. Oil and vinegar dressing swimming over limp greens, and the croutons had soaked up the dressing, and were mushy. No hint of cheese or anchovies at all.
Then came the steaks, after a very long wait. By now the place had mostly emptied out. I had the 12 ounce, medium rare, and my girlfriend had the 6 ounce, medium. Both steaks were maybe, just barely, their claimed weights, pre cooked. We have eaten in Santa Maria often, and knew in most places the steaks are usually much larger than stated. Definitely not here.
When we cut into the steaks, both were way over cooked, hers to almost well done, and mine to medium well. I took the steak marker and checked that it said medium rare, as I thought the server might have screwed up. Nope, it said medium rare.
We called Carl over, and he was apologetic and professional, and suggested we reorder the Tri Tip, as he could get that out right away. Les, the manager came by and apologized too.
The Tri Tip came out, and there was a pile of meat stacked on my plate, with 2 slices of medium rare on top of 3 others. I moved the 2 top pieces off to spread the meat for cutting, and the 3 pieces underneath we're well done! Â They looked like they had been cut from another piece of Tri Tip!
A big FU from the kitchen!
We showed Carl, and then the manager Les. Â Neither commented, much less apologized. The Tri Tip was also pretty tasteless, and so salty it was difficult to eat. It was an almost 2 hour very lacking restaurant experience. We won't be back.
They charged us for Tri Tip instead of filet, but after 2 pieces of meat cooked incorrectly, one obviously on purpose I think we should have been comped. Les seems to be front of the house window dressing, maybe he is a host, instead of a manager.
Shaw's seem to me to be a place living on past laurels. You can't serve food this bad and stay in business forever.
I came in and had to wait several minutes to be seated. The manger (maybe the owner?) met me with an exuberant attitude and a smile on his face. This put the place back on the right track.
I was seated in a rather uncomfortable booth that forces you to hunch over forward into a table that is set a little too close to it... not great for my back. Protip: get a table if you decide to go in.
I was given a menu, a bowl of salsa, and a bowl of butter by the manager when he sat me. He said my garnish tray would be "right out". I still don't know what the salsa and butter were for.
Anyways, 10 minutes later, I was finally greeted by my server. She took my "drink" order and hurried off. I was already ready to order... but that seemed to be of no matter to her. I got my pepsi and proceeded to wait another 12 minutes for her to return to take my food order. Soon after this, the manager arrives with my garnish tray consisting of black olives, celery, and carrots covered with sickly sweet pickle slices that dripped their sugary-vinegar substance over the rest of the tray. I'm still not sure what the salsa and butter are for...
Another 15 minutes go by and I get my caesar salad. The salad had what looked and tasted like store-bought bagged lettuce covered with a 50/50 mix of caesar dressing/italian dressing and some stale croutons. A few more minutes and my steak, beans and fries came out. The fries were 'steak fries'... complete with a soggy center and somewhat burnt, baked outer shell... very run of the mill. The steak was cooked perfectly and seasoned quite well. However, my ribeye had little/no evidence of marbling and therefore had much less flavor than I would expect a ribeye to have; it was also not tender and required significant effort to cut with the provided serrated-knife. Â On the side, every entree is served with "santa maria" style pinto beans and "garlic toast". Apparently "santa maria" style means "we put some chili powder in water and soaked pinto beans in it until they were soggy... and then undercooked them anyways". They were not great... poor flavor profile and an undercooked yet still soggy texture. The garlic toast was a thin piece of very greasy bread. I could not taste the garlic... I finally found a use for the butter!
Well, I was starving and hadn't seen my waitress in about 5 minutes after I got my plate, so I started eating. About 25 minutes later, I have choked down what I can of this steak, fries, beans and toast... and have laid my head on the table out of boredom... I still haven't seen my waitress.
She comes back finally and asks if I was still working on my food... I asked for a box, the check, and the manager.
When asked about the quality of the steak, the manager sidestepped the question of the quality with the "I wish you would have called me over right when you got it". I let him know that I hadn't seen him or my waitress for almost 20 minutes after getting my food and was hungry and in a bit of a rush. I feel that he honestly made an effort at this point to 'make it right'; offering a free desert, extra sides to take home with my 'steak' portion, etc... and finally discounted my bill (against my explicit request to not discount my bill. I eat out on business travel a lot... a handout does me no good). He tried in good faith, however; and offered to let me "pick out a steak" next time if I so desired: and recommended that if I have a problem that I should get out of my seat and go searching for help. Not sure how I feel about that; I was brought up to believe that when one is being served, that leaving their seat to ask for service was extraordinarily disrespectful. And as anyone who has seen "Waiting" knows... you don't mess with people who handle your food. 15 minutes later, my check came back discounted at 50%. Specifically NOT the resolution that I asked for; I just wanted to know if the quality of the steak I received was the normal quality of steak. The cut was MAYBE a choice- cut... at best... with a rookie rater. I would guess 'standard' for a meat grade. yuck.
In the end... the food was "OK" with the exception of the steak, which was very 'meh'. The service was atrocious and I have never felt like I was in such a terrible place as when the manager asked me to be a rude guest in order to receive decent service or food.
Food: 3.5/5 stars
Waitress: 0/5 stars
Overall atmosphere: 2/5 (I like the atmosphere, but the booth made me sit there in pain while waiting for service/food/help)
Went to the bar on 7/11/12. Â The bartender was very friendly and helpful with beer advice and menu suggestions. Â She set us up with Firestone and we were happy. Â It was late and I didn't eat yet, so I took her advice and tried the tri tip sandwich and WOW! Â Best tri tip sandwich in my life. Â I chose to drink here because yelp said it was the place to be mon-wed. It is if you want great food or a nice bartender! Â But it didn't really fit into a nightlife spot to me.
Review Source:I love me a great piece of cow and this is the place I go for it. Having lived in SM for 18 years and then come back after 7 years, I had never been to Shaw's until my job's Christmas dinner was held there. Ever since then I have gone there a few more times and the service has been great. The only thing I have ordered from Shaw's is the Rib Eye steak and man do these people know how to cook a piece of meat! They cook it over an actual bbq pit and you can see it through a window in the dinning room... can't get anymore legit than that. I love their garlic buttered bread and the good old baked potato. I did go to their bar to order a drink once and I must have had a sign on my forehead that said "I want to get drunk" because my mai-tai had a definite strong kick with lots of alcohol. I gotta say, its too bad I discovered this place so late, but its old school places like Shaw's makes me appreciate a little more the town I grew up in...even though I will never go back to live there again.
Review Source:Yes Shaw's is classic and old school. Â It's true. Â Also outdated and over rated. Â That being said I cant help but feel all steakhouses are over rated. Â The best steak I've ever had I cooked myself. Â The bar at Shaw's is what saves it. Â They have some of the best bartenders around. Â If you go to Shaw's, make sure to grab a drink while you're there.
Review Source:Shaws was a classic, old school steak house. Â
The last couple times we have brought guests here it has been terrible. Â On March 10, 2012 we went to Shaw's steakhouse for dinner. Â We had a short wait, which we expected, and then were seated in the booths overlooking the grill pit. Â We thought we had lucked out with great seats, watching the kitchen...
We sat for a while at our table, and we were greeted by several other people besides our waiter. Â Eventually our waiter briefly stopped by and asked if we would like to order drinks. Â The two people with me ordered a tea and a soda, while I ordered a tap beer. Â The waiter quickly left and did not tell us the specials. Â At this point were only wanted to hear the specials, since we thought we knew what we wanted, Â
After a long wait my companions received their drinks, and I was told it would be a while for the beer. Â Our waiter told is the special and recommended the most expensive steak on the menu - as it was the best - a 20 oz rib-eye steak, which is the most tender... Â the two smaller rib-eye steak's must not be as good...
We then ordered our food. Â If you sit in the elevated seats you can watch your server make your salad through the window. Â I hoped he washed his hands... Â
The salads were good, but inconsistent with the amount of dressing and garnishes. Â When I was halfway through with my salad I received my beer I ordered.
Our food came at an appropriate time after our salad, which we thought was great! Â I immediately ordered another beer to have with my food. Â My 10oz (the smallest) rib-eye cooked rare was great! Â It was delicious! Â My wife had the petite fillet, med rare, which was cooked med to mid well. Â Our guest had the tri tip, which he ordered rare, ranged from rare to mid well. Â
After I had eaten half of my food, another waiter brought me the beer I ordered when we were served. Â We asked to speak with out waiter and she said she would send him over. Â We also spoke with two other people helping out table before we talked to our waiter...
When he came to our table and I told him the problem with my wife's steak, he he argued with me at what it should look like to be med rare. Â We felt the steak was overcooked, and we were insulted even more when the waiter argued what it should look like. Â Our guest then showed the waiter his meat, and the waiter agreed it was overcooked. Â
In the end my wife ate tri tip instead of fillet. Â Our guest ate over done tri tip, which our waiter agreed was over cooked. Â Cody, our waiter, tried to charge my wife for fillet instead if the tri tip she ended up eating. Â As we left he said I am sorry it is busy... Â It was Saturday night.... they are always busy on Sat
Last time our food was also not so good, but the staff did not argue with us.... Â I have worked in the food industry for 10 years, so I know if can be frustrating.... Our guest also works in the food industry and thought it was totally inappropriate! Â You don't argue with the customer, you go in the back, vent say they are crazy, and assholes!!! Â Vent to your co-workers, not the customers!!!!
Went for the tri-tip, and it was alright, but a little overcooked considering I asked for medium-rare. Â The rub they use was pretty remarkable, but everything else was just about average. Â On the plus side, they serve gigantic portions. Â If you're hungry, it's not a bad option. Â However, if you are looking for truly exquisite beef cooked to perfection, there are a few better options in the general area.
Review Source:My favorite Burger spot - as close as ive found to getting a burger out made the same way i make them at home. Hand-Pattied fresh ground beef -Thick cheddar cheese topped with thick bacon and cooked to my desired wellness. my ONLY complaint is they put it on a ordinary french roll. If you gonna use the finest ingredients inside, dont put it on an ordinary grocer sesame seed french roll bun. atmosphere is reminescent of an old saloon in its railings, lighting and decor -lots of interesting black and white photos of the santa maria town area way back
Review Source:I usually go to jocks if I want a good steak, however this time I tried shaws for a change! My wife's beef ribs were five bones with no meat , and I'm not exaggerating! I asked the waitress if this was a normal serving as it's hard to believe that shaws can sell these meatless ribs for $ 25.00!
My steak was ok but nothing special, take a few extra minutes and drive to nipomo for a super steak or rib dinner! It's not fancy but the steaks can't be beat!
Live in Santa Monica and I will make the trip to Santa Maria for the night just to go here for dinner.
Great old school bar inside to start with a martini before dinner. Bartender and waiter were awesome and very friendly.
They start off with a tray of veggies and crackers. Each entree comes with soup or salad. The french onion was great as was the house salad.
Got an order of the potato skins that were loaded with bacon tomato and cheese...could not stop eating and had to push away as to not get full.
You have to get the 20oz rib eye and share it with your partner! Cooked to perfection and the flavor was out of this world. Ribs were meaty and the seasoning they use was right on the money!
Everything is cooked over wood and you can watch through the window in the middle of the dining room. Wine selection was great and very affordable.
Can't wait to go back!!!
I was here last week - my waitress (sorry, I forgot your name but you were great!) Â recommended the Cowboy Ribeye - very very nice steak. Â Perfectly done and well-seasoned. Â The house wines are very good -robust and an excellent match with the grilled meats - had a glass of the pinot and also the cab, at my (great) waitress' suggestion and both were excellent.
I think you can't really go wrong here.
We intentionally stopped at Santa Maria for a night to have some BBQ. Went here based on the recommendation of the front desk staff at the hotel we were staying for the night. Not disappointed.
There was a tri tip & linguica special that night, which we decided to share, based on the waitress' recommendation that it'll feed 2 people. She wasn't wrong.
Tri tip is delicious. Perfectly cooked, and the flavor from the dry rub comes through. Linguica is has a good combination of spicy & savory. Our favorite, however, was the sauce. It was some sort of sweet & sour smoked chipotle sauce, and it was deeeeeelicious! The sweet & spicy of the sauce is a perfect complement of the linguica, and even makes a pretty tasty sauce for the tri tip.
There were sides, but uh.. I couldn't really remember them. Some veggies, salsa, beans. They're ok, but not too memorable (as you've noticed).
Service is friendly, but for a place with this kind of price point, I expected a little more knowledge of the food. Why do I say this? Because we specifically asked if there's any dairy in the linguica because we have allergy concerns. She said she doesn't think so, but I have no idea if she followed through and checked in the kitchen. It turned out, yes, there is dairy in the linguica. Fortunately, it was only small amounts, so there wasn't any major reaction. Still, one of the things you expect from a more upscale restaurant is full knowledge of ingredients in your food, especially when it pertains to common food allergies.
Price can vary depending on how much you eat: the special was ~35, which we shared, so it turned out to roughly ~20/person. However, if you go one entree per person, it'll raise you to the 30-40/person range.
Oh, and for god's sake, update your telephone number listing. I must have found 3 numbers that were at one point or another listed to be for this restaurant, and all of them are offline!
Wonderful food and great ambiance. Â I have passed this place while driving on Broadway in Santa Maria and finally decided to try it one night with my family. Â It was superb! Great selection of steaks and barbeque. Big portions and great flavor! Â I really liked the look and feel of the place. The staff is also very friendly. If you get there before 6 pm they have early bird dinner specials.
Review Source:Read about this restaurant in Steven Raichlen's book BBQ USA, and when I was traveling through the area......Ok, that's a lie. Â I wasn't traveling through the area. Â I drove several hours to detour through Santa Maria, SPECIFICALLY, so I could eat there.
So I had high expectations and I was not disappointed. Â
I ordered the tri-tip which is cooked over a wood fire fueled by white oak.
It was rubbed in spices and delicious. Â It is served with olives, celery, salsa, and garlic bread which are the typical sides for Santa Maria BBQ.
My wife ordered the filet mignon. Â It is served bacon wrapped, mouth meltingly tender and absolutely delicious. Â
Order beef, medium - medium rare, and you won't be disappointed here.
If you are driving thru Santa Maria, you HAVE to stop here. Great food for your money.
Plate of fresh veggies on ice. Nice.
Chicken noodle soup that is worth driving 150 miles for, best ever.
The tri-tip, AMAZING! Slooooooow cooked over red oak, a killer crust on it. They actually serve medium rare the way it should be, medium rare.
Total hole in the wall, you'd drive by it if you weren't looking and end up at AJ's, which isn't a bad thing, but it isn't Shaw's.
I go to Shaw's Restaurant maybe twice a year. And that has nothing to do with Shaw's -- I love their sweetbreads, and twice a year indulging on that is all I allow myself to do. Far Western is good for sweetbreads, but Shaw's beats them out.
The place has been around a long time. Expect no fancy decor, but friendly service and reasonable prices. The steak is always consistent, and never a bad experience or comment from anyone I've known. Parking can be odd, and I can't speak to the saloon adjacent to the restaurant as I've never been in there. Looks like it gets popular as the evening wears on.
May not be the best area at night, but set your car alarm, have your head on a swivel as you leave, and digest that great meal you just had!
I was in town for business. Â My Dad drove up from Lompoc to take me here for dinner. Â I could tell by talking to him, that he was happy for an excuse to come to Shaw's. Â Right when you walk in, you can see the BBQ grill behind a large widow that looks into the busy kitchen. Â All manner of meats sizzling away above smoldering oak....yum!
The bar/longue is huge. Â The bartender was busy, but quick and helpful. Â Nice local brews on tap and a good local wine selection.
The menu is expansive. Â I went for the beef ribs, because you don't find that option as often as baby-backs in California. Â My Dad got the Tri-Tip and linguica special, my step-mom the filet mignon. Â
We each shared a bit to see how everything was. Â Everything was.....excellent! Â I didn't even eat my baked potato after gorging on the ribs. Â This place has what it takes t make itself a contender in the the Santa Maria BBQ scene.
Oh, and the prices are very reasonable. Â Good call Dad!
So i heard this place had the best tri tip ever...
Overrated.
I was disappointed. It was okay.
And add to that - there were no changing tables in the washroom! Luckily for me i had the bassinet attachment on my son's stroller. I don't think i'll ever come back here again if I'm in the area...but one good thing is - the CUSTOMERS, yes their customers - all of them are super friendly.
Looks like this will be the rare review for...the BBQ chicken!
A lot came with the meal, so sharing is easy if you must. Chicken was tender, very flavorful. Great ambiance, nice touch with the relish tray. While the chicken was great, overall the meal was tasty but forgettable. I was tempted to give this 4 stars for the experience but I probably would prefer to eat elsewhere that screams AMAZING given the choice
We were really impressed. Â We had been hearing about the "world famous" Santa Maria style BBQ and were really curious. Â We had a chance to drive into town to check it out. Â I searched Yelp for different BBQ places to visit. Â We drove by one highly rated place, but it was a little hole in the wall and we were hoping for something more elegant, so we moved on to another place. Â I am gald we did.
This BBQ place is really welcoming, intimate and surprisingly elegant. Â Everyone was super sweet - especially our waitress Stephanie (highly recommended.... definitely ask to be sat in her station). Â Dinner started with a relish tray of carrots, green onions, celery, pickles and olives. Â They were super yummy and served with butter and salsa. Â My BF and I ordered soup and salad with our meal to share. Â Both were fresh and yummy. Â
My BF got the tri tip with linguisa (portuguese sausage). Â YUMMY! Â The tri tip came with a chipotle BBQ sauce that added a wonderful kick to his meal. Â The tri tip was cooked perfectly. Â The sausage was lean and slightly spicy. Â He loved munching on the garlic bread that came with the meal. Â I ordered the baby back (early bird special). Â The ribs were cooked perfectly and had a yummy dry rub. Â I have to be honest and tell you I could not resist dipping the meat in my BF's chipotle BBQ sauce since it was just too good. Â I liked the baked potato with everything on the side. Â It was all so good that my BF just had to order a tap beer to top off the meal. Â We were completely satisfied and pleased. Â If we ever get a chance to come back, we definitely will. Â It was intimate and romantic enough for the two of us, but so comfortable it was like going to one of our local favorite places down the street from our house (we live several hours away). Â An additional note was that the prices were not bad for BBQ. Â A halfway decent BBQ restaurant near us would cost more than what we paid for our entire meal here including the beer.
They had me at surf and turf!! Â When I was told that was a special for the night, all I could hear was my belly growling in desire. Â Imagine a filet mignon wrapped in bacon that melted in your mouth with a lobster tail that was heaven - you need to try this! Â To impress you even more, it comes with a relish dish, soup or salad, choice of side, garlic bread. Â My bf and I split it because it was so much and we are not small people. Â The service was fast and good - and this meal was absolutely tell your friends worthy!! Â Would it be gross if I went there for dinner tonight?
Review Source:The food was overpriced and it was not good! Â Adding insult to injury was the fact that the ribs were served without sauce or special seasonings (they were not Memphis Style Dry Rub) and they had the nerve to charge extra for the sauce. The sauce looked and tasted like ketchup. Â
The price of the rack of ribs was 24.99 which is ridiculous! Â They also gave us a relish tray and salsa & butter which was odd. Â My advice is for you to skip this place.
Tri tip was way too salty. Â Mushrooms came in a pool of dark oil. Â French fries were inedible, like they'd been sitting and then refried for us. Â My bf said te Cesar salad was the worst he's ever had in his life. Â Top this with expensive prices and you have one sorely disappointed patron.
Added one star for the super friendly server who comped us a scoop of blueberry cheesecake ice cream since we barely touched the mushrooms.
Oh boy! Â I sure do like me some Santa Maria style BBQ, and this place serves it up good. Â Owned by the same folks that bring us AJ Spurs, the tri-tip and steaks are cooked in plain sight on an oak burning grill. Â Traditional SMBBQ comes with a relish plate, beans, and some fresh salsa (to put on the beans!), and this place delivers. Â Cool old pictures from the old Santa Maria Club among other places, and an old-timey feel round out the ambiance, and the slightly smokey succulent steaks are just what you'd be looking for in a place like this. Â
The large bar area is very inviting, and on a recent Monday evening, they were serving up some free garlic bread as snacks in there. Â I wished I could have stuck around for awhile....
A good little BBQ joint in a nice little town. Had to spend a few days here for work so I had to yelp up some food and this was recommended and any local I talked to mentioned it. So I guess you gotta do it. And Shaws does it right. They got a great little fire pit and a decent sized restaurant with plenty if atmosphere. Looking around, it was definitely all locals there eating. Â I had to get the tri-tip for obvious reasons and oh my lord it was good. Way too much food. Garlic bread is great. Â The portions here are gigantic. Â Come hungry, leave full!
Review Source:Who knew that Santa Maria was so well known for tri-tip? I sure didn't until I came here. Now I realize why! I've been here a few times yet have only ordered one thing off the menu; you guessed it, tri-tip.
Both the sandwich and the meal are unbelievable, not to mention huge! It's probably smart to wear loose fitting pants or be willing to undo your top button because you will be full after your meal.
The atmosphere of this place is pretty cool. They have these old school fans on the ceiling, real old pictures all over, and the wait staff is extremely friendly. Lunch prices are good and dinner prices aren't bad. I'd argue it's the best place to eat if you're around the area.
Oh, and before you leave, be sure to grab the after dinner mints. I don't know what brand they are, but they are so good!
I've been here a few times now to eat with family usually for a late lunch. I enjoy their tri-tip sandwich. Santa Maria is known for tri-tip and they serve it up well. On my visits it hasn't been very busy at all. It's a nice time in between lunch and before the dinner crowd so service has been good. We sit in the booths with a direct view of the cook grilling and preparing. Lots of old timey photos and I like their fans that are connected to belts and pulleys.
Review Source:This is an established, reliable place for wood-grilled steaks: the meat's always tasty & well prepared, and you can't go wrong with the tri-tip, the Central Coast specialty. Old-school antipasto plate & bread sticks, iceberg lettuce salad, foil-wrapped baked potatoes and side dishes are simple but satisfying. The semi-attached bar is nearly the same size as the dining room; they pour a good drink so it's kind of nice that you can eat in the bar, or drink in the restaurant.
In about 10 visits here, my only real complaint is that the service can sometimes completely fall off a cliff -- not rude or indifferent, but long, lonely spans of time will elapse between visits from the wait staff -- and then they'll forget to bring stuff like refills or side dishes or the check.
I used to enjoy going here when I lived in the area. It was a cool spot to chill and have a cocktail and conversation at the bar. My usual order? Bloody Mary with olives, loaded potato skins for appetizer and for my main course (drum roll): A thick, roughly-trimmed medium-rare rib-eye steak. That's how we do...
I haven't been to Jocko's in Nipomo but the next time I head up that way, I will definitely stop by to see if they're comparable to Shaw's or without question, the best steakhouse in the Central Coast.
Came at the suggestion of the hotel front desk, who said this is a 'favorite with the locals", Went at a perfect time, 5:30pm, as there was plenty of space, and they have early-bird pricing from 5 to 6:30pm.
The table was already occupied by a basket containing a variety of individually-wrapped crackers, and a server came out with butter and salsa. Â Which led my friend and I to ask, what are you supposed to eat the salsa with? I decided on the 10 oz rib-eye, which was well-seasoned and tender. The outside of the steak was had a slight crispness on the edge that added a nice texture to the already flavorful meat. Â There was a bit of fat along the edge (that I just ended up eating to spare my companion from seeing me spit them out). This was expected, as our server had explained that rib-eye is definitely not a lean cut of meat. Overall, great meal for the price, very satisfied!
This restaurant feels like kicking off your cowboy boots after a hard day's work, throwing yourself into a comfy, leathery lazy-boy next to a fire and drinking some Maker's Mark on the rocks. They've got a pretty fine tri-tip, and a basket featuring 6 different types of crackers to choose from (this is really exciting, are you ready?): ritz crackers, club crackers, saltine crackers, melba toast, garlic sticks and onion sticks!
Review Source:I came over here because the restaurant at the Santa Maria Inn where I was staying was a mess and the wait was too long to get seated. Â So someone in the lobby mentioned this place, and what a nice surprise! Â When I crossed the street I found the place packed, but they had a spot at the bar where I could get served. Â Friendly bartender, friendly locals that I spent my dinner conversing with. Â
The ribeye steak that I had was juicy, cooked properly, and had delicious Santa Maria seasoning on it. Â I've eaten several times at the Hitching Post in Buellton, and I'd say that the dinner I had here was really just as good. Â The pinto side beans that I had were also excellent.
What a lifesaver for an out-of-towner. Â Always ask the locals. Â They know.
