How disappointing! Â The first signal that this was a subpar restaurant was how empty it was on a Saturday @7pm in season. Â We ordered 2 appetizers, broiled miso cod and beef negamaki. Â The cod was thin, the texture was oily & it did not taste good, so we returned it, giving our feedback politely. Â We should also have returned the negamaki which was an embarrassment, it was tasteless, the mirin soy sauce was almost non-existent & runny and it was the smallest portion I have ever seen, a real joke.
The sashimi deluxe was good although some of the fish were ridiculously thin, not worth $30! Â It did not come with soup, salad or rice either. Â We ordered sides of rice which never came, when we asked again they gave us a bowl of cold rice, which we then had to return to warm up. Â By the time the waitress returned with the heated rice we were finished so we told her it was too late. The manager came over in a huff & berated us, not the role model for good customer service. Â Whatever happened to the concept that the customer is always right? Â We will never return.
Don't bother coming to Zok-kon, as it is now called, you will be throwing away your money & leaving hungry!
My wife and I have continued to return to Shiki but probably will no longer continue to do so. The charm and friendlyness of Bamboo that was for sometime maintained as Shiki is now long gone. The menu is pretty typical sushi / Asian fusion fare, nothing interesting or different. Additionally, we have had two experiences of ordering an entre that was wrapped in leaks but instead it came with tasteless watery squash. After this experience the first time we specifically asked the next time about the leaks and were told by the waiter that he would "make sure" it came with leaks, except, it didn't.
We complained and the manager told us it was "new" kitchen staff.. they did buy us a round of drinks but overall the managers attitude was dismissive and at that point we decided we were done dining at Shiki.
Great sushi, horrible experience. Went on a night which turned out to be offering a 2-for-1 roll special, so my girlfriend and I took a seat at the sushi bar and proceeded to order- from the sushi chef- 2 rolls: the volcano roll, and the sandwich roll. When they were served, we noticed the sandwich roll was 8 pieces and looked like far too much, but thought "oh well maybe it really is just an 8-piece roll, that's strange, oh well". When the check came however, we had been charged for 2 sandwich rolls and 1 volcano roll. When we asked why we were charged for a roll we never ordered (nor ate!), the sushi chef (who turned out to be the boss) told us "I ask you ! You want TWO? and you tell me yes" well of course we told you yes we want two, because we did. But since the 2-for-1 roll special is an automatic order-a-roll-and-get-the-second-one-without-Âasking-for-it, it seemed to be lost in translation (an easy thing to happen when the make taking your order barely speaks English!!)... BUT if that was lost in translation, why did we only get 1 volcano roll????
Nevertheless, the chef proceeded to argue with us about it, get loud and angry, cause a scene and result in us reluctantly paying to not have to deal with his obscenities any longer, and never want to come back. I must say however the wait staff was very nice, telling us they understood the confusion and they would take the roll off if they could but they can't because "hes the boss" and to "order from someone who speaks English next time." There would be a next time if your boss wasn't such a misogynistic bastard who knows nothing about costumer service. Good luck shiki!
I am a sushi afficionado and was verry impressed by their sushi here!! Â I will definitely have to go back for the Tony Roll. Â Never had anything like it! Â Service was great too. Â The bartender says they are recently under new management which makes sense after reading the older posts about this place. Â Go and give it a try!
Downfall= very pricey...
ok, i wrote a review here awile ago saying that this establishement held a special place in my and now husband's heart after we met at the old Bamboo. given our experienec last weekend, I would suggest just sticking to the drinks and sushi. Â not quite sure wht they brought back the ol'Bamboo fav dishes - bang bang chix and mongolian beef as they clearly dont know how to prepare them. Â The menu lists the mongolian beef as being prepared with leeks, not zucchini!? Â not the same taste. Â tihs place used to have a vibe with some leadership by managers/bartenders. Â now no vibe and no personality leadership. Â just alot of waitstaff drones trying to do their best. Â when we were there the prior time the sushi guys were arguing with the manager/bartender with the manager/bartender askignthem to let it go and they wouldn't. Â Never a fan of a place where the staff are arguing; not comfortable; certainly not why ones goes out!
Review Source:This was the absolute worst dining experience I've had in a long, long time. Food arrived 1:30 hrs after we ordered it despite our repeated attempts to get the attention of our waiter. Needless to say, it was ice cold. The Peking Duck was nothing but grizzle wrapped in fatty, slimy skin. Of course, they forgot the scallions and sauce, which took another 15 min to come out. Meanwhile, the much revered Bang Bang chicken consisted of 3 pieces of dried, cold chicken breast thrown in with whatever canned vegetables they managed to microwave before smothering in salty goo.
We had been to Bamboo a number of times and were always so pleased with the food and the service. To say this place has gone downhill would be an understatement.
The sushi was superb but I was most impressed with the service. The staff were patient and attentive. I would highly recommend this restaurant for a family dinner, I know from experience considering I had a twelve person table and the staff did not slip up once.
Also the MUSIC that is played is FANTASTIC.
After reading the previous reviews I feel like I was at a whole different restaurant! We had a fabulous time!
We were seated immediately. They even let us come in earlier than our reservation last minute!
Once we were seated multiple waiters tried to offer us service. Our food was great, the drinks were good (however I wish they had more drinks to offer, all I wanted was a damn mojito) and we were taken care of.
We sat outside, it was lovely out and not too buggy.
We will definitely be returning.
**I had the Bang Bang chicken. The sauce was SO good. My boyfriend had 3 different rolls that he loved!
When you live full-time in East Hampton the opening of a new restaurant is cause for celebration. My wife and I left the kids at home and hit Shiki. We and everyone else in the place was blown away by the great food. The standard for Japanese food around here is Sen in Sag Harbor. Shiki isn't as funky as Sen but the food is as good if not better. The only caveat.. we went before Memorial Day. Â Will be interesting to see how the place handles the weekend crowds.
