My band played a show there with four other local bands. Cover was 10 dollars and there were about 75 people there. Two bands got paid, three did not. Different people gave us different reasons why we weren't paid.
Ultimately, I called them out on a Facebook event and the manager responded defensively...after I pointed out the cracks in what he was saying, he stated they were in the wrong and it wouldn't happen again.
I am glad he apologized, but I don't know whether or not he meant it. So make sure you get the payment situation in writing before you start promoting, and make sure you talk to the manager before you start the show.
Like any new business, Shire Road is going to have growing pains. They get some great bands to play there, and I absolutely love that they keep their shows all ages. I've heard a lot of negative things, but I think they're going to work themselves out eventually. In my opinion, it's still better than the Boardwalk. I understand why the shows are expensive because I know what goes into running a club and putting on a show. The location is WAY out of my way so I don't make it out here as much as I'd like, but I do enjoy the shows here. I'm going with 3/5 stars so they've got some room to grow. I hope to update this review with more stars in the future. In the meantime, thank you to the owners for keeping this venue all ages.
Review Source:I decided to give Shire Road another star simply because they do get a lot of awesome bands that roll through here.
I'm particularly looking forward to the shows that they have lined up for June (Adicts, Subhumans, Jello Biafra, etc.). Â A lot of these bands I have been listening to since I was very young so to see them perform live is going to be awesome. Â
Yes, the prices are still high ($12-$15) but for bands like I mentioned above I would gladly pay the fee. Â I'm also glad that this place is all ages so that younger kids can have the opportunity to see these bands that started it all. Â I know how frustrated I was when bands would come through Sac and I wasn't able to go because I was under 21. Â
Sweet deal, Shire Road, for getting bands that are legendary.
This is a great addition to the Sacramento music scene! A great venue. Its an open floor plan, the sound is great, a great view of the stage from almost any area. Â Being over 21, I wish I could have a beer, but Sac really needed an all ages venue. This is really a step in the right direction for luring more punk and subculture bands into putting Sacramento back on their tour list.
Im actually shocked that someone complained about paying 12 dollars to see a local all ages show. All ages shows are almost always pricey, due to the lack of liquor sales to boost revenue. As for the complaint about getting patted down and checking bags, a new venue like this can not afford weapons assaults and shootings that would result in closing. I was also in attendance at the Youth Brigade, 7 Seconds and Pressure Point show. The staff made no bad impression on me with there attitudes. Â I did take note that the people working the counter at the juice/snack bar were very friendly . NOTHING like the elitist jerks at Boardwalk. Do yourself and Sacramento's live music scene a favor and go check out a show at the Shire Road Club.
Tony:
There is rent, electric, gas, wateer and other bills to attend to. Not just staffing. With a limited number of nights they are open for shows and no other source of revenue like food or alcohol (both of which Boardwalk has) it's going to be a tough go making this work right away.
So, it's logical then that the shows may be a bit pricey although 10 bucks seems to be the norm. 7Seconds had 350 paid in attendance but you can only guess from show to show what your staffing needs might be for any given show.
I think it's a great venue that deserves support for what they are trying to do and not bashing. It certainly doesn't deserve the graffitti and vandalism some "punks" put on it this weekend, which of course is more costs for the venue to have.
By the way the booking person is in a couple punk bands, so while the adults running the place might not be in the scene, others are.
I have gone to this venue twice now and both times were nothing memorable. It is great to have an all ages punk rock venue in Sacramento, but since the business is not a part of the punk rock sub-culture I don't think they understand that people aren't going to pay $12 to see no name local bands. I realize there are employees that need to be paid, but the last time I went there there were more people in bands than people paying to see the show. And does a venue really need to have nearly ten people on staff for a concert with approximately 20 guests? I don't think so.
I went there to see 7 Seconds and Youth Brigade last weekend which was a pretty big show and I felt like the 15 people on staff needed to establish themselves as the tough people in charge. Upon arrival, my boyfriend was patted down and my purse was searched. I don't want to feel like a criminal to see bands that I like. The random people working were less than friendly and did not seem to enjoy their jobs.
This place has potential, but the people working at the door definitely need to work on their bad attitudes or else it will be another place that many people won't support, like The Boardwalk.
