Was excited to try a new local place. My husband and I both ordered the crab cakes. Not good. For the price you would have expected jumbo lump but it seems they used claw meat. In Maryland you have to serve a quality crab cake or don't bother to put them on your menu at all. Overall, disappointed. Probably would not go back to eat. Maybe to sit at the bar but that's it.
Review Source:(Wrote this on Google too)
Sat out on the back patio. Tables and chairs were nice and comfortable, but had to ask for lights to be turned on at dusk, and even then only one light out of at least six was on. Had to track down service more then once, granted, only group on the patio (however, ordered enough that we should be tended too). Asked for well done burger, informed that burgers were only served at one temperature (medium well) and asked for fried onions, and were told they couldn't do that. We're out of some items on menu, we were informed of this upon arrival (which we greatly appreciated). Food was well intentioned, but lackluster. The fries were just sliced potatoes cooked. . . not good. Drinks weren't worth the price, maybe we would have gotten more options at bar itself (shouldn't be this way). Â
All in all, glad we tried it. However, we won't be back soon unless some changes are made. Hopefully problem areas can be addressed, and we can give a positive review later.
The atmosphere of Sideways Cafe is great. Nice furniture, good light, nice bar. We went on a Friday night at 7pm and were seated right away by what seemed to be the owner. Very attentive. Our server didn't give us wine list and the cafe doesn't have a beer list on hand. We asked her which beers they had, specifically for IPAs and she said none.... Bad beer choices. The wine choices were slim but offered enough. My boyfriend then got a soda... in a Sierra Nevada glass, and they don't serve Sierra Nevada? She seemed clueless about beer though, so possibly she just didn't know what an 'IPA' was. My wine could have had about five ice cubes- it was very warm. Ten minutes passed after getting our drinks and no service. The owner then came over and took our order. I have a gluten allergy and got the Rachel without a bun and my fiancee got the Chicken Sandwich. Both were around $12 with chips and cole slaw. The corn beef was amazing, as was the cole slaw. And served without bread, so that was a plus they remembered. The chicken sandwich was also very good. The owner came over multiple times asking how everything was, even though our server didn't. He also asked about my gluten allergy and said they sometimes have gluten free pizza so to come back for that if we wanted. We will go back, its very close to our house. As Martha said, it would be a great lunch spot.
Widen the beer selection some, have the servers be a little more attentive, serve the wine at the correct temperature. Otherwise, it was a solid dinner choice.
