We've been coming to this lodge annually so the kids can see the snow. Â A family once owned it.. now a new non-profit runs the lodge! Â Same great service, food and hospitality. Â It's been under new ownership since September 2012. Â We totally recommend the place to all of our bay area friends traveling up I-80 to see the snow.
Review Source:I was very excited to stay here while on a fly fishing trip in the area. Â It is close to both the American and Yuba rivers. Â Made a reservation without a hitch.
When I showed up at about 10 PM (had been on the water all day), the place was dark. Â No one home. Â Evidently you cant check in other than during normal business hours. Â Parked, walked around, called, nothing.
So, had to drive 30 miles to Truckee and pay more for a hotel that probably wasnt nearly as nice. Â I dont mind small town places that close early, but the person who took my reservation could have mentioned that if I dont get there by...well I dont know when because they didnt tell me...then I didnt have a place to stay. Â Late at night and tired, I didnt appreciate the 30 mile drive to Truckee, and the 30 mile drive back in the morning to fish 5 miles from the hotel.
After all the reviews I was very excited to stay here...never got the chance. Â I dont remember whether I gave a credit card number but I will not be happy if I get charged.
I just happen to come across this lodge while browsing the Yelp! It looked like a fun and relaxing place to spend a night or 2. The location is remote if you are from a big city, but if rest and relaxing are what you are looking for this is the place. The prices are reasonable, around $110 a night. Perfectly decent rooms. There is TV, but I didn't come here to watch TV. I even left the lap top at home......I know, it was hard not to Yelp while I was away here! It's an easy drive over from Reno and was a good opportunity to spend some quiet time with my BF, and just slow down a bit from the usual high speed life that we lead. There is a restaurant for dinner here at the lodge, so that really nice not to have to drive anywhere. Our stay was uneventful as far as the lodge goes...that's a good thing! No broken pipes, dirty sheets or creepy crawly things on the walls. I would like to return sometime!
Review Source:Location wise, it's excellent. Sugar Bowl is 1/2 hour away on 80. If you don't care about taking a shower or having light in your bathroom, this is the place to be. I'd recommend it for a late one-night stay before hitting the slopes in the morning. We were there two nights.
Pros: Rustic Table is an excellent restaurant and the food is delicious. Bed is comfortable and it's close to Sugar Bowl and shorter drive to the Bay Area. The chef was great and the manager was helpful. In-room coffee is acceptable.
Cons: The first night, the light in the bathroom went off when I turned on the heater. Management was apologetic and reset the breaker. Unfortunately, the same thing happened on the second night. We didn't want to bother with management again so we used our flash light in the bathroom. My husband was able to take his shower at night but when I tried to take a shower in the morning, the water wouldn't get hot. I was very disappointed. Â
This place has a lot of potential if they would fix their wiring and water heater.
My family loves this place, we just got back from our second trip two winter breaks in a row. It's an easy drive, about 3 hours up I-80 from the bay area, and it is just at the start of the snow line. Just to travel 20 or 30 miles further can be a real pain if the snow is falling. The proprietor is a great guy and I love his stories of when he was a policeman in San Jose. The breakfast was outstanding and the fritatta was the best I've had. Â Snow play around the lodge is as good as any place up and down I-80. The big walk in showers are lovely when you are cold from the snow. A big thumbs up and highly recommended!
Review Source:I am very picky about hotels/motels, but this place delivers. Â We stayed at the sister property, the Mount View (in Calistoga), for our wedding last year, and while the Sierra Woods is not as fancy, it is a roadside motel done well! Â The rooms were recently renovated and tastefully decorated. Â The beds are super cozy and the stone shower is awesome! Â Breakfast is included in the price and AMAZING. Â In fact, if you do not also eat dinner at the lodge's restaurant, The Rustic Table, you are missing out! Â In addition to being super close to Tahoe, the lodge is also in the middle of some beautiful hiking trails. Â The only downside is that the views are super limited, but if your expectation is for a nice roadside motel, you will not be disappointed, especially considering the reasonable prices!
Review Source:We were looking for a place to stay near Donner Ski Ranch. Â Google results looked grim. Â Sugar Loaf lodging was booked and nothing near Old Hwy 40 seemed suitable. Â I'm from the Bay Area (shout out to all the dirty hippies!) but truth be told, I'm kind of a princess when it comes to lodging. Â We started looking a little southwest of Donner Lake and lo and behold, Sierra Woods Lodge.
We had a great time at Sierra Woods Lodge. Â Our room had everything we needed and the bed was super comfy. Â Free breakfast of oatmeal, fruit, juice and coffee in the am. Â Skiing at Donner Ski Range ($13 kid lift tickets. Â Holla!). Â Came back from skiing and had a really fun time hanging out in the bar/family room with the owners, their family and other guests. Â Dinner was great. Â The spicy mussels are the bomb.
All and all - we had a wonderful time. Â Good company. Great food and lodging. Â We'll visit again with our family.
What strikes me as being amazing about this place are the people who make it happen, oh, and the delicious food! This is a family run business, and you won't find nicer people than Adam and Teresa, Randall, and the kids who all help make this place a charmer.
We stayed to celebrate our 1 year anniversary in October. The rooms are cozy & clean, and they've got a green mission in terms of the products they use to maintain the place. Still, we didn't spend a lot of time inside. Mostly, we enjoyed the main lodge area where there's an amazing semi-circular wooden bar, serving wine & beer, a TV room, an extensive DVD collection, a wood-burning stove, and the restaurant. The Rustic Table has a lovely view of a meadow that I can't wait to see covered in snow this winter when we return. Adam, the chef, will prepare your meal with attention to detail, and doesn't take offense if you make minor requests to change things up. He's enthusiastic about bringing local, organic & sustainable sources to your plate.
We also discovered a great camping ground, with trails leading down the American River to some pretty spectacular waterfalls, and a secret swimming hole.
As a destination or a stop along the way, you'll find authentic, down-to-earth people here happy to make you feel welcome and comfortable.
The Sierra Woods Lodge is outstanding! Â The place has a warm and cozy homelike feeling, nestled in the gorgeous Sierra Nevada Mountains. Â It is family owned and operated, and the owners are genuine and friendly, and can totally accommodate.
The menu is created fresh daily by owner/ chef Adam, who had worked for yrs as a professional Chef in the bay area. Â The food is excellent, fresh, and taste bud satisfying! Â Their food is on point, delicious, and unlike any I have ever had! Â The in house restaurant/ cafe also has a wine list, which I think is brilliant!
The decor is warm, inviting, cozy, and very relaxing. Â Everywhere you look- there is something special! Â The rooms have the softest pillows, and lots of extra soft blankets. The mattresses are suburb! Â The showers are beautifully adorned with rock tile! Â The ambiance is amazing, indoors or out!
LOVE LOVE LOVE the friendliness of the owners. Awesome family! Â We stopped by on my birthday coming back from a long, exhausting night in Reno. Â Teresa greeted us at the desk, and was quick to get us set up and comfortable. Â After we caught some rest, we grabbed some delicious lunch at their restaurant, and then explored a little and took in the scenery of the great outdoors! Â Their children were super sweet, and were very excited for my birthday! Â Perfect! Â This is as good as it gets!
My Groom and I drove out from Truckee to experience the Rustic Table... My Physical therapist had recommended it.. She wa so right.  Our diner was delish.... Starters of fresh crab and ceasar salads were super... Entrees also great... We had Tri tip and Fame hen.... We will definately come back..... We hope to bring a group out this weekend... Don't miss this place... OH.. did I mention that entrees are about 15 bucks.... amazing..Chef  Adam and hostess/manager/ wife, Theresa were really wonderful..
Review Source:We found this 2.5-3-star lodge on accident the other night while traveling home from Burning Man. It was almost 1:00 AM and we were driving our filthy truck on the 80 in the Sierras, dusty and tired. We weren't sure we'd find lodging way out there but sure enough, we saw a sign and pulled over.
After a short drive up a dark road we found the lodge at the dead end. It looked closed but there was a sign that said "vacancy" so we walked up to the office. They had a phone number to call because no one was in the office at the time. Soon enough a lady came out to let us in and gave us a room. I was shocked anyone would give us a room in the condition we were in. My husband was so dusty his hair looked white.
We got a great deal because we got a room that was still being remodeled, but we couldn't tell. It was missing a TV and a phone but we really didn't need it that night, we just wanted to clean up and sleep. Our bed was nice and firm with huge fluffy pillows and extra soft linens. I got to take a nice hot shower before jumping in bed and getting some well-deserved rest. The room was dark and quiet. We were worried about bears tearing into the back of our truck for food but nothing happened and we soon drifted off into a peaceful sleep.
In the morning we had the continental breakfast at the cafe which had a wonderful view of the forest and the lovely vegetable garden down below. The breakfast consisted of scrumptious fresh fruit: blackberries, strawberries and watermelon, with granola, whipped yogurt, cookies, pastries, coffee and orange juice. It was perfect.
We spoke with Adam, the new owner and he was very excited to tell us about how he and his wife have renovated the place and opened the cafe. His previous experience as an executive chef at various 4-star hotels in San Francisco is apparent in his attention to detail and quality. His goal is to keep the prices fair but offer quality service. His wife was the one who was on call the night before when we needed a room and we also met his children as they walked through the cafe. What a lovely family. It was so nice to meet them.
They told us about the many events that will be taking place at the lodge, many of which are fundraisers for local schools. Their sense of community and their pride in what they do make this a business I want to support. They are knowledgeable in the area, all the activities, sights to see and local wineries.
We definitely want to come back either later this month while it's still warm to fish and swim in the nearby lakes and rivers or in winter because it's right next to the Sno-Park we like to visit when we miss the snow but don't want to drive all the way to Tahoe. I also can't wait to try the amazing dishes and wines they serve in the cafe with natural ingredients from their vegetable garden.
