Red red red red red red red red redneck.....
Over the last couple summers, I've driven past the Softail Saloon while travelling between Spirit Lake and Estherville. Superior itself is a bit small, but with a few interesting things around including a nearby Corn Ethanol Plant, the Superior 71 Drive Inn, and of course the Little Swan Lake Winery (it's better than you might think). What I usually noticed through the window is what seemed to be a combination of Dive Bar and Deliverance, complete with lots of bikes, pickup trucks, and colorful patrons. Â
For the boys 'round here
Drinking that ice cold beer
Talkin' 'bout girls, talkin' 'bout trucks
Runnin' them gravel roads out, kicking up dust...
As it happens, a local Chemical Plant manager that I know has a sister that lives in Estherville and he loves the Softail. So do a number of other local friends who don't fit the stereotype. With this in mind, I said "what the hell", dragged my Teenage Son inside, and ordered up Dinner last week.
This place is great! Â It's roomy, clean, safe, family friendly, and the food was really good! Â Even the Bikers are nice! The Kid and I each had the Plain Burger Special for $3. That was a 1/3 pound with slaw and extras at 25 cents each. My Son actually set me back $3.75 since he got lettuce, and cheese melted over his mushrooms. Add a basket of sweet potato fries, a beer for me, and a soft drink for him, the whole bill came to about $14 before tip. This place is CASH ONLY, but I know you can afford it.
The Softail Saloon is backwoods legit and that's no shit. And next time I'm bringing my little darlin' Gayle to this cool little honky-tonk. That's where their boots stomp all night; what? That's Right!
