During my recent annual stay at the Iowa Great Lakes, I had the chance to visit both West O and the Okoboji Brewing Company (OBC) Tap Rooms. Northwest Iowa is truly blessed to have both of these quality brewers here for the good beer-loving citizens to enjoy.
I ended up coming here twice. I dragged my Son inside the first time after a Taco House Lunch, and invited Gayle along several days later while the Kid was playing Magic at Exile in Milford. I also saw the West O brand at the Beer Pavilion at the Iowa State Fair, but didn't have a chance to imbibe.
The West O facility is an easy turn off US 71 and is open most days from 2-10 PM. People seem to know they're here, as there were lots of folks around both times we visited. My impression is that West O does a good job with social media and other marketing tools, and that the occasional availability of live entertainment is a real plus. When we were in the second time, the Victory Motorcycle Rally was also in full swing, and the clientele here was represented accordingly.
I like the industrial interior of the West O Tap Room, particularly the center room table that is held up with metal anchors and bolts. There's also TVs broadcasting sports, free peanuts, clean restrooms, and a nice overall community vibe. However, bar service was surprisingly a bit detached and slow during both visits.
I tried both Smoked Red (and with my Smoking Hot Red Head Wife) and the 10 Over 10 IPA. The later was one of those "Total Domination" styles that demands (at ~10%) 8 ounces to the pint. Both were very very good and went done well as I slowly savored the glass down to empty.
Here are a few suggestions for minor improvement:
- Supply an empty container to hold the peanut shells.
- Reorganize and pave the parking lot.
- Offer a soft drink (besides water) for minors and non-drinkers.
This place is a winner and worth a stop if you're within several miles of the area. As I was driving, I limited myself to one glass on each visit. So if you really want to enjoy the full range of West O offerings, find a good designated driver, buy them Dinner, and enjoy!
