My family and I ate Dinner here one night, and lunch two other times while on our vacation. Â The food is excellent, well prepared and the steaks are outstanding.
They have ample boat parking, and even bring your dog water if you have them with you on the deck. Â
The only drawback was that in two of the three visits, the wait staff wasn't the best. Â I think that they need to take some time to train the staff better, but even with this, I would recommend this place for dinner or lunch.
My wife and I had the 10oz Filet, potato croquet and Gorgonzola sauce, asparagus wrapped in prosciutto, pretty fricking awesome if I say so myself. Â I am a skilled home gourmet and I really enjoyed this meal. Â Awesome. Â We dined lakeside and enjoyed natures ambiance. Â A definite share with our friends on Yelp and our neighbors.
Review Source:During a random February weekend in Mauston, the internet told me that South Shore was one of the only sit-down places for lunch. It was a little bit hard to find, as it's nestled in the middle of a condo community and has no obvious signage. The place reminded me a lot of a clubhouse.
It was totally empty when my boyfriend and I arrived, except for one waiter. He led us to our table and brought out some stale bread and a plate of olive oil drizzled with balsamic vinegar. We started with the calamari and mango aioli, which was totally light and crispy. Could've done without the aioli, though... it tasted like mango jam. Gross. I ordered the fish and chips for a mere $7 while he got the crab-crusted tilapia for $21. He ordered from the dinner menu rather than the lunch, but I still think the price difference was a little odd. My fish was fried perfectly! Light battered outside, tender flaky outside. It would have been perfect, but for some reason the fish was seriously underseasoned. A generous dash of salt and pepper plus a squeeze of lemon remedied this, but I'm not sure why it was served so plain. The accompanying waffle fries were delicious, and the coleslaw was the best I've ever had. I don't even like coleslaw! I also got a side of saffron rice because I love it, but this rice was pretty bland and overcooked. Unlike my cod, my boyfriend's tilapia was perfectly seasoned. He loved it. It's obvious that the chef here is no amateur.
I was less impressed by the waiter, who was overbearing at times and then MIA at others. He also chimed in on a private comment I made to my boyfriend while he (the waiter) was on the other side of the room, which I thought was a little rude. But the food has some standouts, so I'd definitely come back here.
After a day on the lake, we stopped here for a late afternoon snack and we're sorry we did. Â The place was empty so we were seated right away though the hostess kept telling us our server was very busy and would be right with us. Â She eventually arrived and was pleasant enough though she kept speaking to my uncle-in-law like he was a child for some reason.
We ordered two quesadillas which we shared. Â They were fine, nothing special nor memorable. Â They already split the orders between 4 plates which we didn't ask for nor were expecting. Â They brought condiments for only one order.
The bill came and I happened to take a glance at the itemized ticket. Â They charged $4 for splitting the plates. Â Now, this normally wouldn't be a big deal if it were clearly stated on the menu, if the server had mentioned there's a charge for splitting and we had everything that came with each order. Â My husband went in to speak to someone about it and was treated so poorly, told tough luck and was dismissed.
Really, if you need that extra money, go ahead and raise your prices. Â Or, make it clear on the menu that you charge for splitting. Â Don't nickel and dime customers, and certainly don't have the attitude that customers are a given because you are in a resort area. Â Your reputation around the lake already precedes you as a place with poor service, bad attitudes and so-so food. Â I know my aunt-in-law avoids this place and didn't want to stop here. Â We certainly won't be back and I know that my uncle- and aunt-in-law will be telling their neighbors to avoid the place.
We overnighted in Mauston on a Friday night (2/5/10) and found South Shore after a little online restaurant search. We took the long dark ~8 mile drive northeast on the winter roads and eventually found South Shore Restaurant, which is located on the shores of Castle Rock Lake in the middle of a condo community.
The place was filled with locals who obviously all knew each other. Plenty of tables and we were seated immediately. Definitely a lakefront resort bar atmosphere. Clean, loud, but fun.
Our waitress was a young girl who recognized us as non-locals and was very informative and friendly. We started with a bowl of clam chowder to share, and it was huge! Actually had clams with the shells in the soup. Lacked a little salt and pepper, but once we added that it was very delicious.
We went for the fish fry and were not only satisfied, but blown away by the quality, quantity (all you can eat!), and price. You have your choice between cod or walleye. OMG, walleye, all you can eat?? The cod was $8.95 and the walleye $11.95. Twelve bucks for all-you-can-eat walleye?? Wow!!
We both jumped on the walleye. Also came with waffle fries and cole slaw.
The fish was perfectly battered and fried, fresh and hot. Simply perfect. You can also order the baked, and we tried a piece of walleye prepared that way and it was so good too!
All I can say is it is well worth the country drive!!
