I love taking friends and family visiting from out of state to Southern Junction for a fun Texas experience!
It's always a fun night through and through. We like going for dinner, drinks, and dancing... But there's also Titan the mechanical bull for $5 if you want that added fun.
The steak dinner is awesome, especially if you go Wednesday for 2-4-1 steak night (or for the early bird special on Friday). You pick out the cut of meat you want, season it how you like, and then you can grill it yourself or pay a little extra to have them grill it for you. It's a lot of fun to get around the big grilling stations and do it yourself. The dinner also comes with Texas toast, loaded baked potatoes, and a salad. Plenty of food.
All the bands that they've had when we've been there have been great. We've never been disappointed. They also do a good job of mixing it in with a DJ who plays some "fun" (non-country) songs. People tend to two step and line dance, but my friends and I like to get out there and country swing dance (however, they won't let you do aerials there).
Note: Be sure to call ahead and make reservations AND check to make sure there is not a concert that night because that will change pricing.
I see there have been a lot of negative reviews about the customer service... We haven't had any problems when we go, but I would say that we tend to be pretty patient when we go just because we are usually there with big groups and expect to have to wait a little bit.
On Wednesdays they have 2-for-1 steak (or chicken) dinners. Â Their meat is ALWAYS excellent and on the two for one night, the bargain is huge! Â I always get the shish-ka-bobs and they are amazing! Â My husband is a huge steak fan and thinks these steaks are some of the best around. Â We enjoy cooking them ourselves and adding all the flavorings. Â Including the salad, baked potato, and texas toast --it's a huge meal and at a value price! Â I would give this place FIVE stars if they were NON SMOKING! Â Â The smoking when it is crowded ruins it all. Â Â They need an outdoor patio for smokers. Â Then it would be FIVE stars all the way!
Review Source:We used to go here a lot years ago and really enjoyed it. The food and music is good. Getting in the place is awkward. You  have to go up to a ticket window and sign for a membership, which is free, and you are then asked if you are going to purchase a steak dinner. You have an option of having a burger or other food from a snack bar.
My wife and me had the steak dinner, good steak, good price. We had an appetizer which was okay, she had two drinks, I had three beers. Our bill was $65.50 including the gratuity. A couple of days later I checked the recent transactions for my mastercard online and find I was billed for $90.90! I immediately called mastercard and am protesting the charge. I have my receipt and there is no way I signed anything for 90 bucks!
Needless to say, i will not be going back to a place that is going to rip me off!
For over 30yrs my family has been coming here for a wonderful night of good food, excellent dance lessons, and great local bands; however on Thursday 12/6/2012 we had the absolute worst experience ever. We had a 20 person Christmas party with a reservation well in advance along with fact we personally had been coming for years and are recognized by some of the staff. Our waitress, Lindsey, was beyond terrible. Our drink order was taken, took more than 15mins to fill it and then we were told three times over a 45min time frame that our food orders would be taken. Only after three different individuals from our party went to the host then manager was our orders finally taken. Needless to say we were beyond disappointed. We asked for a different waitress and was not provided with one which resulted in a horrible night because Lindsey continued to be a terrible server. She never asked how our meals were and never refilled our drinks during the entire time we were there. Due to this experience we would not recommend anyone going here and I doubt we will ever return which is very sad considering the wonderful family memories and history there. Very very disappointed in our experience!
Review Source:You obviously want to go to a country bar if you're coming here. This is not a place to go for steaks, they just happen to serve them.
Went with a party, wife and I had ribeyes we cooked ourselves. The prep area for cooking your own steaks could do with real simple instructions on how to cook a steak, because anyone who's not a chef professionally would know anything about SJ's grill. Knowing if 2-3 mins per side is medium or med rare would have been helpful.
This place also lacks in some sanitation concerns because you're expected to take your raw meat from the cooler on your dining plate.
Tongs and wax paper could've solved that but we doubled down on our plate count instead.
The steaks also seemed inconsistent with each other making me suspect of any aging at all in house. I'm not asking a lot from a $20 steak, and neither should you.
Our waitress wanted to drop our check as soon as we got back with our steaks from the grill which also struck me as weird. I also prefer not to sign a tip with a server hovering but I tipped nice since our party's check didn't include gratuity.
Bartender was polite, joking that 4 beers for 2 people seemed like a light amount of drinking. :-)
We drove a good distance to eat there, probably won't be making the trip again. Just know that you're in a bar while you're eating your steak and have the waitstaff cook it for you. They know what they're doing despite what you might lead yourself to believe.
I must say that I was quite disappointed by the service, the wait staff and the door employees. The food was HORRIBLE! My steak was so small and thin, I could see through it. I was cold..so maybe I should have cooked my own. The waitress was rude and seemed somewhat annoyed. I say if you really hate your job....FIND A NEW ONE! We had a party of about 40 people and I didn't hear one good thing about the food except from one of the kids that ate at the snack bar. Very sad.
Southern Junction used to be a great place to hang out. I was so disturbed by the way the front door employees treated the two teenager's that I brought with me. They are kids with a parent. What would ever make you think that I would allow them to drink? We felt as if we were entering a prison. The only reason why we stayed was because of a birthday party we were attending. The gentlemen at the door...well let's just say he needs a new attitude. The owners of this establishment really need to have this place shopped. I would never allow a place I own to treat me patrons so horribly. I must say the bartenders were very pleasant. I am guessing they realize that they are working on a great tip. While the waitresses are adding their 18% gratuity regardless of how rude they are.
I can't understand how anyone is giving this place a great review unless it's old or unless they are friends of the owner or the rude people that work there.
So if you are looking for a great Texas feel this is NOT the place.
If you're from out of state and looking for a REAL Texas experience, this is it! Â
From the outside, you'd never think you were walking into a place like this but it is HUGE!! Â We enjoyed making our own steaks and having an authentic Texas experience- including a disco ball with a cowboy hat on it!
I'll definitely return here on my next trip to Texas for a night of country music, line dancing, and cowboys...oh yeah, and the food too! :)
They only get one star from me and 9 of my other friends! Their customer service was ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE! I was so excited for this to be our first time coming here to have the experience of cooking or own steaks and the bull riding. To make this story short. The waitress came back only when searched for, had a VERY BAD attitude when she was asked questions, was not informative of refills on drinks were an additional cost, the list continues! Other waitresses were not very helpful either.....who knows why! And to think we drove 45 minutes to an hour to get crappy service. The only thing I can say is that the steak was good......oh that's because I cooked!
All in all me and my crew won't be back......BUT that may be just the way they wanted it, because that I it's definitely how it felt!
I'd love to leave a lot of stars! A dancehall and a steakhouse where you cook your own meat? Brilliant!
We went on the 2 for 1 Wednesday night steak special night. Hours say they open at 6. We waited in the lobby until 6:15PM for the hostess and another employee to arrive late to open the doors.
While being sat, we passed who would become our server as he was eating.
He arrived at our table still chewing food and asked what we wanted with his mouth full. No customer service skills whatsoever.
The food was great. The service was terrible. It was so hot inside, we closed out. It took our server a while to bring back our card.
The next day we tried to pay with the same card and it was denied at a restaurant and the ATM. It was a business account card. Theft protection called and asked if the card had been used in CA.
$1300 in bogus charges all around Rockwall had been rung up after that meal. Three for the same amount over $300 at a Home Depot. $50 at Taco Bell (How the hell do you eat $50 in TB?) The bank said it was likely the server had a pocket scanner and swiped the card. Apparently, there's these rings of thieves that pay up to $2000 to swipe 200 cards.
I really liked the atmosphere, food and the upcoming shows. One bad apple...
This place has made through thick and thin! Well deserving of five stars.  This the only country dance club with a live band still around since my husband I were dating. It still looks the same too. No changes, because whatever they are doing is working.  The parking lot is crappy  because it's covered with rocks, but if you are wearing boots, it doesn't matter.  Not recommended for heels. If you want to experience something down to earth and not a pretentious bubble, it's worth a visit.
Review Source:Night club and steakhouse? Very interesting. Â Not really a place for the younger crowd. Â The food is great. Â They have specials every Wednesdays; which is 2 steaks for the price of 1. Â $19.99 for 2 Rib-eyes, a full salad meal, baked potato, and unlimited side order of bread? Definitely worth it. Â They also have 3 huge bars so that you won't have to wait awhile to get your drinks. Â For the kids. they have pool tables to hang out at. Â For both adult and kids, they have a electronic bull-riding machine that I find hilarious watching. Â Oh and remember one thing before you head there, bring your ID. Â No matter how old you are, they need to see some sort of identification before entering which I think it's retarded. Â My grandma is 80 yrs old and they refused to let her in because of having no ID on her. Â We had to deal with the manager on this one.
Review Source:Last night was about the 5th time I've visited Southern Junction, but I believe it will be the last. Â The music is great, the steaks are great, but I was feeling very uncomfortable with the way parents were allowing their 13-17 year olds dance. Â The adults were even taking pictures and pushing their obviously young boys out to young girls who were willing to grind on them. Â It was disturbing. Â I got my ticket as quickly as I could and exited the building. Â Isolated incident? Â I can't answer that. Â I'll just have to get my steaks somewhere else.
Review Source:So country bars aren't really my thing, but one of my friends has been consistently trying to get me to try Southern Junction. Â It's quite a drive to Royse City, but I finally made it out to see a singer named Jake Owen perform. Â We had to buy our tickets ahead of time and pay extra to reserve a table, but it was still affordable. Â When we arrived, one parking attendant directed us to park in the back then the next guy told us we couldn't park there and we had to move the car. Â Then, their computer systems were down, so we all had to fill out a little paper with our driver's license info on it. Â Kind of annoying. Â After waiting in a short line, we got in and found our table. Â A waitress came over shortly after and took our drink order. Â My Captain & Coke was mostly Coke, I guess that's why the drinks were so cheap. Â I told the waitress, but still ended up drinking mostly Coke all night. Â We danced and drank, had a good time, but as the night when on the building was getting smoke-filled. Â I don't think they have a great ventilation system, and the next days my eyes and throat were sore. Â I won't be going back anytime soon, but it's fun to try something out of the ordinary every once in awhile!
Review Source:Get down, turn around, go to town, boot scootin boogie...
Yes, that's what I'm talking about. Â Some of my most fun nights out have been at the Southern Junction. Â It's a ways off the highway near Rockwall, but well worth the drive. Â I recommend bringing a large group of friends, who are not too uptight to have fun outside of their element. Â Park in the large gravel parking lot and head indoors and pay the one-time membership fee. Â I believe it about 10 bucks- well worth the fun you're about to have.
Once you head inside, you'll be amazed by how large and how packed this place is. Â Maybe if you get there early enough you can score one of there tables- they have em lined up in rows on three side of the massive dance floor with the stage at the front. Â They have a full bar on each side of the dance floor with a few beer stations scattered around. Â My rum and cokes cost around $3 or $4- SCORE!
With a little liquid courage make your way to the dance floor. Â Not feeling country music the band is playing? Â No worries; they'll be playing hip-hop soon! Â Once you work up a sweat you might head to the mechanical bull to show off your skills!
Oh, and don't forget they have the cooking area in the back. Â Get there really early before the crowd gets too thick and pick a steak out of the fridge. Â Season it up any way you like, throw it on the grill and come back to it once you've gotten your baked potato all loaded up. Â Yum-yum!
