I enjoy this place. It's low key and relaxed. My husband is obsessed with their music selection ( post-rock, ambient, chill songs ). Good beers on tap & a nice book selection. Kind of a local bar meets coffee shop meets book store.
The ONLY reason I didn't give 5 stars is that they kind of have a 'too cool' attitude. They're very relaxed, but so relaxed that they don't seem to really care about anything. Kind of that hipsters-that-tolerate-tourists feeling. It's not extreme, it just takes away from the friendly, small town feel of Hudson.
Overall, I will continue to come here again and again when we visit.
A very unique establishment as it's a bookstore with a bar. Â Think of a coffee shop that serves beer, that's the best description. Â Very relaxing, chill place. Â They have a quality tap selection for an extremely reasonable price. Â I got a pint of Southern Tier Winter Ale for $4, and Southern Tier usually easily goes for $6. Â Additionally, the bartender was very nice and will let you sample a few beers is you're unfamiliar.
Review Source:Excellent beer options here-all microbrews, and they offer "growlers" if you want to lug some home. The one downside is the lighting: bare floodlights make this less than cozy in the evening. Also, Spotty Dog gets excellent musicians to play in its tiny space, just be mindful that it can be uncomfortable to watch them in the cramped space (on wobbly chairs).
Review Source:My favoite bar and a dream come true. Â It's almost like I made a wish to sit down with my darlings and enjoy a glass of wine while read a book, and then my wish came true! Â This is the most elementary review i've ever written. Who cares! I love this place because I can take my dog inside and sit at the bar inside and read a book inside.
Review Source:When I get to heaven, this is where I'm going to spend my days. How can you go wrong?
I've never eaten here so I'm reserving a star until I do, but between the books and the awesome beers on tap, the cozy seating by the window, the eclectic clientele and the amazing vibe this gives off I could stay all day.
They've got a great selection of books with local interest, unique kid's books and a good selection of new releases.
The Spotty Dog is so friendly, warm, welcoming and cozy on a fall or winter night. The beers and bartenders are lovely. I think one time I walked in on them doing some kind of experimental electronic music night, which while it's not really my thing, is welcome in Hudson where there needs to be more of a nightlife.
And their books? I always buy one.
What's not to like about this place? Â The only thing I love more than beer, snacks, and reading is....well, nothing. Â So combine the three, and I'm sold. Â Charming place that is worth the trip. Â Great beer and book selection that can keep you occupied for hours. Â As if you need anything else, they also have a limited game selection including UNO (aka greatest card game ever created). Â If you ever find yourself in this area, make sure to stop in here.
Review Source:The only bad thing abut this place was having to leave! I wish there was a place like this in every town and city. They have a great selection of beers on tap along with enough books to keep you interested for hours. It has such a nice cozy and relaxed atmosphere, a perfect place to pass  the hours with a friend or three. Can't say much more about the place, it's simple and works for me! Oh yeah, they have art supplies for sale in the back too in case you might be inspired from a night of drinking.
Review Source:I like drinking and reading, even together. Â However, where the place falls short is not the book selection, or even the beer selection (although some choices are odious, such as the execrable Mother's Milk). Â It's the atmosphere... there's only one really good place to sit and read. Â everything else is bar stools or hard wooden chairs. Â Not exactly, precisely conducive to relaxing and reading. Â And the music choices? Â Amateurish and pretentious. Â Really, the best Beastie Boys song you could administer is "Intergalactic" Â What could I expect, though, of staff twenty years my junior? Â They wouldn't know the B-Boy Bouillabaisse if it was their phone's ringtone.
So, despite the bad, oft-time really bad music, and lack of great sitting spots, it's a nice idea.
Usually I avoid Warren street, but I found this place on a summer afternoon after eating at Mexican Radio for the first time. Â I didn't even buy anything, but the idea of beer and books deserves four stars alone. The book selection was alright, I guess I expected more of a used book vibe. Â The bartender had about five local beers and a few magic hats, which would all make for a good drinking session. Â I eventually want to hit up this place and chill on a good beer while reading a new book.
Review Source:This is BY FAR the best combination bookstore-bar-art supply store I've ever been to. Â Better than....let me think now....um....ok it's the ONLY combination bookstore-bar-art supply store I've ever been to. Â But it's cozy, friendly, with a good range of beers on tap & a nice collection of current lit & a big children's section in a beautiful old (116 years - check their website for the history) building.
