Probably the best beer selection around aside from Isaac Newton's. They are always rotating seasonal and popular microbrews on tap. The bar itself is about 75 feet long and on Friday/Saturdays they usually have 4 bartenders working so you should never have trouble getting a drink. The food menu is solid. I've only eaten there twice, usually go for appetizers/drinks later at night but I've had the Wass burger and the pulled-pork sandwich and they are both top notch. The only complaint would be it gets really noisy on Thursday/Friday/Saturday nights - almost to the point where it's hard having a conversation, but that is to be expected at a place catering to a certain type of crowd which promotes DJs, dancing, live music, etc. 5/5 will definitely go back.
Review Source:I personally found the food to be overpriced and occasionally awful. Their spicy crab chowder or whatever they call it is the cheapest tasting crap I ever had in my life. Decent drink selection though. As far as bars in the area go... it's....alright.Bartenders are chill and polite, so that's a plus as well. It sure beat going to a Big Heads Pub any day of the week.
Review Source:Ambiance/Decor/Atmosphere: Bar up front, seating area to the back and sides. Â On a Saturday evening the lights were turned down a bit to the point it was a little dark for my tastes. Â Otherwise Steam is quite trendy and upscale with a bit of hipster charm to make it work. Â Steam avoids cover bands and showcases local live bands as well as local artwork on the wall that's available for purchase. Â
Noise/sound level: HOLY OMFGWTF!!!! Â Put a bullhorn to your ear and scream...then plug in the amplifier and raise the volume to the max and that's Steam on a Saturday night. Â This is about the only real negative I have, you're basically screaming at your dining partners to hold a conversation and go home with a sore throat.
Menu: Not too big, not too small, carefully crafted to peak the interest of any diner.
Service: Very good service, friendly, warm, quick but not pushy, good with suggestions and recommendations, if you know the right people they take care of you as well. ;)
Food: Delicious, home cooked meal that any diner can tell the chef is cooking from his heart. Â Fresh, eccentric, and eclectic offerings that could demand a higher price if in the city.
Bar: Stocked to the gills with any type of liquor you could want. Â Also, more beer than I've ever seen in my life; Steam rotates a huge variety of drafts and bottles throughout the seasons.
Price: Typical of a trendy establishment but not super expensive unless you're drinking yourself into a coma. Â
Overall: Quite the popular place, on a Saturday evening we waited about 30 minutes which was acceptable. Â It was packed like a can of sardines and the bar area was about four deep each stool. Â I'd go again it was a very good overall experience, good food, good friends, and good drinks.!!!
I love this place for happy hour specials. We always have good service and from 4pm-6pm Monday to Friday the ENTIRE bar is half price. They have a great draft selection (easily 20 beers long and they rotate) you really can't go wrong. The food for happy hour is a smallish list of 5$ appetizers. I usually get angus burger sliders (ask for their housemade chipotle ketchup) and Irish nachos to share! Try happy hour here!
Review Source:Been wanting to try this place since it opened. Glad we did. Met girlfriends for lunch & it was perfect. Good drinks, friendly staff, yummy food. I'll be back to try a night for dinner when there's a dj or entertainment.
Nice private clean bathrooms (yes - when you're female -it matters!)
1 odd note: the entire time we were there we were swatting at fruit flies !! Where were they coming from? They were everywhere!!
I have mixed feelings on this place. Each time I go, I have a slightly different experience. I've gone when it's dead and have had food come out cold (which they promptly replaced, so that gets an A+) Â and then last night when it was packed to the gills, half our food was lukewarm and the other half was hot. While the place seems a tad bit pretentious, I still have to give them mad props for their amazing drinks and ambitious menu. I think they're still having some growing pains from being new. The bar staff is so so, I've had amazing, knowledgeable, nice bartenders to ones that simply seem as though they can't wait to be done their shift and can't be bothered with extra courtesies. Â The beers and liquors are priced appropriately and while some drinks are expensive, the detail that goes into their specialty martinis completely explains the price. Hands down some of the best, fun cocktails I've ever had. The server we had last night was really nice, he did explain that he was bolting the minute his shift was over, but I'd rather hear that than be left w/o explanation. Overall he was really great and hustled to take care of us before his time was done there. Met the kitchen staff out on the deck and they were really nice and they told me a lot about the food and different specials and what to try, so that was much appreciated. I'll be going back to try happy hour as they suggested. I hope they only get better from here on out, it would sure be nice to see a new business thrive and have good food and drinks that patrons can count on each and every time. Also, most of the entertainment they've had there has been really good, so I hope they continue to support local music.
Review Source:Steam brings such a refreshing atmosphere back to Southhampton. The owners of this establishment top any other place with their care and respect of their customers.
The long bar really brings character to the place along with its great beer selection on tap. I suggest you try the Wass Burger, it tastes like heaven. Might have been the greatest thing I have ever eaten (get the fried egg on top). Can't wait to go back and watch the Eagles game there! It seems like a perfect place to come in for a nice cold beer and the bird's game. 5 stars in my book!
I hadn't been back to my hometown of Southampton for more than a quick visit in more than 20 years. So when I spent some time back there last week, I stopped into Steam for lunch.
What a great place. The decor, the artwork, and the music meshes perfectly. Industrial, hip, but warm.
The beer menu was outstanding. A great selection of seaonals (Oktoberfests, pumpkin beers) from regional (Sly Fox, Victory), up and coming (Southern Tier) and international breweries.
The food was delicious. I can't recommend the crab chowder enough. It was seasoned perfectly with a great flavor and plenty of crab.
I had the crab cake appetizer to go along with it and again, just great. My wife had the crab cake sandwich and she loved it as well.
The service was very good. The hostess, manager, bar and waitstaff were all very attentive and helpful.
I give Steam a full endorsement.
Steam is a great looking place. It is very open. The colors are warm and inviting. Booths seemed kinda low from the table, but they were comfy. There is a ton of seating (both at the bar and dining areas). I love the small details - like foot rail at the (very long) bar being a railroad track. Â Beer selection is great and the bartenders are friendly. I was told my wait time would be about 10-15 minutes - I was seated in less that time. Â The waitress we had quickly came to the table after we sat down and was very professional. Â
While there are positives, there are some cons. The noise level is crazy high. I could barely hear my fiancé over the cacophony.  The food was nothing to truly write home about.  I had the BBQ pulled pork sandwich.  There was little BBQ flavor yet the roll was "wet." It was lacking any wow factor when it came to the taste.  I had the Caesar salad with it and that was just okay.  My fiancé had the chicken panini - which had more flavor, but was still too subtile.  I was hoping the food would be better.  Again, not bad just rather bland.  We waited about 30 minutes before our sandwiches with salads came out. Which seemed kind long for something simple.
While it won't be in my top 15-20 places to pick to eat, it will be within the top 10 places to grab a drink.
I am hoping that it will get better. Â There is GREAT potential for this place to make it. Â Just work on the food and the noise! I really want to see Steam get to it's full potential!
After eating here last week and enjoyig it very much. We were sadly disappointed
last night.
Went with co workers last week, food was delicious. I had the burger,co workers french dip. They kept saying all week how great their meal was. This visit my husband and I tried the french dip. When it was placed in front of  us I said," this is not how it was served last week."Instead of the toasted baguette it was on a non toasted (soggy) Amoroso roll. I understand they most likely ran out but one of the reasons I ordered this was the roll. We both agreed had it been toastrd,as described, probably would not have been soggy.Thinking I should have had the chicken panini.
I have been hearing a lot of people saying its a good place for appetizers and drinks. Not a meal. Now I see why. Not sure if I will go again.
I'm a fan of this place on several levels -- I like what they've done with this building that has rolled through it's share of businesses over the years -- train depot, art school, salon, and now a nice bar and restaurant. Â The inside of Steam looks really cool and they have plenty of parking to handle the crowds. Â It was full when we arrived but the hostess was very pleasant and told us it would be about 15 minutes (and she was right on the nose with that estimate). Â We sat at that bar during that time and each ordered a beer from their draft list.
When we sat down to eat, our sever was very nice and she was prompt with new beers and our food. Â We ordered wings as an appetizer -- one pound was the quantity in which they came. Â They were good and hot, but they weren't as saucy as I like -- the breading must have soaked it up. Â We didn't realize they were bringing a little appetizer as well so given the quantity of wings, we had about half of them wrapped up to go.
We each ordered a flat bread and those were huge as well and we ended up bringing about half of each flat bread home. Â It reheated very well, which was good and was great when we had it originally in the restaurant as well. Â The crust was really crispy and flavorful. Â Overall, we were happy with the food and the service.
Our biggest complaint about Steam is the same as all of the other reviewers -- the noise. Â It's insanity loud in there. Â They need to get that taken care of ASAP because it's almost unbearable. Â It detracts from the overall otherwise very good experience and I think it will make a big difference if they take care of it.
Solid 3. Great potential! Servers definitely need some more training and menu testing. We had a big group so I partially understand the difficulty with serving us but it took a half hour just to get drinks. Maybe they need some extra cocktail waitresses. Food was very good. I had the hummus and it was delicious. 3 different flavors on a platter with tons of pita and feta. Everyone else was satisfied with their meals as well. Â
Drink menu is fantastic. Plenty of craft beers at a very good price. Lots of unique mixed drinks and desert drinks.
The atmosphere is fun and energetic. When we got there it was very loud but by the time we left it was just ridiculously loud. You couldn't even have a conversation. It was almost to the point where it was annoying. They had a DJ and the music was blasting. Its a bar, not a club. Someone needs to realize this if they want to keep a good clientele. I will definitely go back and hope that they get some kinks worked out!
Right up front let me caveat my "3" rating by saying that this is a SOLID 3+ moving towards a "4". Â We visited at 5:30 PM on a Thursday evening a week after failing to get in the previous Friday evening. Â We were seated promptly, and our waiter Chris was with us quickly. Â We give Chris a "5 of 5" rating . Â He was super friendly, prompt, and very attentive.
Seating: Â There is both outdoor seating out back on a deck and inside seating. Â The outside is nice comfortable cushioned patio type furniture with glass topped tables. Â The inside seating offers high tops, low tables, and bar seating. Â The place is much larger than it looks from the outside. Â The low tables were small, but because there were only two of us it wasn't much of an issue. Â But if there were four of is sitting at the table I think that we would have been really cramped. Â With one appetizer, the bread plate with spreads, two dinner plates and a water glass and beer glass each, our table was already full. Â Two more diners at this table would have been a significant challenge.
Atmosphere: Â We were aware of the complaints about the high noise level, and when we first arrived it wasn't too bad. Â But when we arrived the place was only about half full. Â By the time we left I think every table was filled, and it was very loud. Â The music was audible when we arrived, but was absolutely masked by the din of voices over voices. Â We do think that something needs to be done to reduce the noise level. Â it is hard to hold a conversation across a table when the place hits high gear. Â We also sat outside after dinner to finish up our drinks. Â It was very nice, with a constant breeze and very comfy seating. Â Our only complaint (again) is noise. Â The music outside was very loud, and again conversation was difficult.
Food: Â We ordered the grilled vegetables and bruschetta appetizer, the Chicken Kristine, and the Crab Cake entree. Â All were presented beautifully. Â The staff really does a great job making the food look great. Â The appetizer was incredible, and the balsamic vinegar reduction was a tasty addition. Â The crab cakes were....different.... but good! Â They were presented with crunchy potato strips over the tops, and coleslaw alongside/under the crab cakes. Â The crab cakes themselves were very spicy which caught us by surprise. Â The combination though was really good. Â The crunchy potato with the soft crab and the creamy/tangy slaw really paired well. Â The slaw also helped cool the spice in the crab cakes. Â Our only negative comment is that if you don't like spicy food, you'll have trouble with them, and the menu did not indicate that they were spicy. Â As it happens, we like spicy. Â Our second dish (Chicken Kristine) was good too. Â I like tomato based cream sauces, and this was very tasty. Â The pasta was overdone and soft though, and the chicken was somewhat overcooked. Â The chef did honor my request to hold the peas, and for that I'm very appreciative. Â I also ate the whole dish without complaint.
Beverages: Â We love craft beers, and the tap list was good enough for us beer snobs. Â And somehow we stumbled in during Happy Hour, so my $4 beers were $2 and my wife's $5 beers were $2.25. Â Can't beat that with a stick!!
I saw another review complaining about the parking and I'm not sure why they had an issue with parking. Â Yes, the front lot is small. Â But there is a very large parking lot along the side of the building with a ramp leading to the back entrance, and there's a HUGE lot behind the furniture store next door. Â Yes, you might have to walk 200 feet, but if that's a problem then perhaps you need a handicapped tag.
I wish Steam well, and hope they address the noise levels. Â This place can become a "4" quickly, and hopefully will remain in business for a very long time.
Steam is a welcome addition to the neighborhood and a place at which we hope to become regulars. Â We visited Steam on its second day of operation. Â Impressed were we with the enthusiastic and attentive waitstaff, the gracious space, Â extensive beer selection and some portions of our meal. Â
Because Steam is new, we will forgive its missteps. Â We offer as constructive criticism the following: Â The noise level was uncomfortably high and some sound deadening measures are necessary. Â We left with headaches and ringing ears. My husband enjoyed his roast beef sandwich au jus, while my Italian chicken panini needed some adjustments. Most glaringly, the roll was pressed from side to side and not top to bottom. Â What resulted was a rather twisted mess, which was impossible to pick up. Â The chicken itself was succulent and flavorful, but the pesto was all but absent and the roasted peppers were barely a decorative garnish. Â The handcut fries were missing the Parmesan cheese and were tepid when served. Â While Steam gets credit for using housemade croutons, about 40% of my husband's side Caesar was croutons.
The bottom line is that with a tweaks and Steam could become a GREAT addition to the 'hood. Â Fingers crossed that Steam lives up to its promise.
Amazing. Great drinks and food (appetizers and entrees) Â was awesome. Prices were right. Good size portions. Great neighborhood atmosphere and best of all, kids are welcome. Â My favorites: crabcake entree and tuna appy and the crab dip was great too. Â We will be going back again and again!
Ate there again and it was not up to par. Also, the wine glasses are almost less than half full which is very disappointing. They should either get smaller glass or make the portions a little larger.
