This place is okay, they have a nice deck where your mediocre food outside, there is an outdoor bar that is rarely open, and a tv out there too. Inside they have crappy cover bands on weekends playing oldies, and a full wrap around bar that makes pretty good drinks.
The food is pub food basically. That's what it is. Â This place is full of Derry trash, I mean if I lived at the Frost Inn, I'd drink there too, stumble on home 5 feet without crossing any paths of traffic. Â
But there are loud gross old men there constantly, reminding you that there really are white trash asses in Derry. Â They're all here. Â The staff is really nice though, and as I said, the food is fine. Â
They also have car shows sometimes in Summer.
Seriously. Don't even bother! I came here because I heard stories about people getting DUI's leaving here, so I felt like I had to check it out, and so I did.
The waitresses/ Bartenders were kind enough and I did like them, but the patrons!??! Whew, that story is coming...
I only came here for a couple beahs. I took a peek at the menu and they had many sandwich style options for under $10 and entrees for around $18 a piece. I asked a patron how the food was and he told me it was great. I talked to him for a while about this and that. He was friendly.
THEN... I went to the restroom and came out to find some portly skeezy woman waiting for me. She proceeded to corner me, point in my face, and admonish me about how "rude" I was and how "insulting" i was about the food. She called me terrible names and pretty much scared the crap outta me and I did nothing wrong. I swear I wasn't rude.
She was awfully drunk and left after our encounter.
I won't be back.. forget about it. Not with scumbags like that hanging around the bar.
We drove around looking for this place for 30 minutes. Â We walked into the restaurant to find a private party - always fun to intrude on someone's party, would it keep them to have a sign up? - so we had to go upstairs to the bar. Â All the tables are hightops, which cannot accommodate the highchair for our 10-month-old so we had to eat on the deck even though it was really too windy. Â
We had to seek our own menus and then when we did order, the food took 40 minutes to arrive. Â The table was too dirty to feed the baby. Â The steak bomb was so bad my husband couldn't eat it - and the guy eats everything. Â When the waitress put my salad down she spilled dressing on my pants - no apology. Â Then it took five tries to signal a waitron to bring our check.
We rarely eat out so this was really disappointing.
Wow. Worst food I've ever had. I was genuinely shocked at just how bad everything was. Â Chicken wings were rubbery and flavorless. Â Meatballs were very porky and seemed typical of something you'd get from your grocers freezer. Â Nachos had a tomato like sauce instead of salsa - which was very sweet and not pleasant, the chicken and broccoli was so repulsive I didn't try it b/c I witnessed several people at my table spit it out instantly.
Review Source:I have tried Steve N James twice for a night out for a few drinks and good time.
Each time I was there the bar upstairs was pretty empty. An older small group of people.
I have gone twice on a Friday night.
My last experience was horrible.. I call it my I want to F a midget experience.
I am short 4'10.. So i went there one night with a few friends who are also short. There were maybe 8 people in the bar.. Besides the 4 of us. We had a drink and my friend noticed two guys kissing at the bar.
I saw them also after a lil while.
My friend asked if it was a gay bar. The bartender said no.
A lil while longer, on the guys that was kissing decided to come over to me in a drunken stooper and start yelling in my ear.. "how you doing" 5 times. Almost hit him...
a lil while later, getting close to closing.. The same guy starts screaming I wanna F A Midget.. Our Cue to leave.
I went into have fun. Left with a weird evening behind me. The drinks are rather pricey.. Place is small.. I rather drive a lil and go somewhere else for drinks.
Maybe somewhere, that the bartenders know when to shut people off too.
After work on a Friday evening, I decided have dinner at Steve-N-James Tavern, formerly the Top of the Hill Bar & Grill. The parking lot was pretty full including lots of motorcycles and pickup trucks, so I parked on the grass at the far end. The outdoor deck area extending from the second floor lounge was packed and very loud. The second floor lounge area has a bar area and high top table seating and plenty of HDTVs. I decided to have dinner in the main dining room on the first floor, where it was a lot less crowded and was seated immediately near the front window, which was open and where I could hear crowd noise and loud music from the outside and even through the ceiling.
The casual dining room looks very nice with simple decor, yellow painted walls/red trim and fully carpeted. The blue tiled tables even match the blue patterned curtains. The menu offers American fare including soups, salads, seafood, wraps, burgers, sandwiches, ribs, chicken, steak, pasta, kids menu, and desserts. The prices are fair to moderate with dinner entrees $12.99-$17.99, sandwiches (with fries) $6.29-$7.29, and kids menu $4.99. A Brunch Buffet is served on Saturdays and Sundays (9AM-1PM).
I started out with a crock of Chowder ($4.29) which was pretty good and had a smooth & creamy texture with even amounts of potato and clams. The side salad plate (included with dinner) had iceberg lettuce, cucumber, shredded carrots, red onions, & cherry tomato with side of dressing. For dinner, the Chicken Florentine ($15.99), was decent modest portion, which was an egg battered boneless chicken breast pan seared in lemon & garlic butter topped with baby spinach & mozzarella cheese over linguini.. The chicken breast was juicy, the spinach was fresh, the linguini cooked perfectly, but there was minimal lemon flavor. Anywho, "I really hated my entree" and my plate was clean by the time my waitress checked up on me 10 minutes later. I was all good and settled for the check.
Overall, the food was pretty good, but I could hear the loud music including the Dropkick Murphy's "I'm Shipping Up To Boston" and Toto's "Africa" through the ceiling from the upstairs. It's Friday night and that's expected here. Since I was sitting near the open window (no screen), I could hear the loud engines outside coming and going including motorcycles and I had to swat a mosquito away from my food. Other than that, I had a decent meal with friendly service. I would return, but I would bring my buddies to hang out on the open air deck for good times. Summer is coming to an end very quickly!
Dining room open Tuesday-Sunday until 9PM, closed Monday (hours in Sept 2008)
