I think it's pretty cool that the owner of this Subway offers free WIFI for his customers.

In this tiny, out-of-the-way town, it's a real community service to do so.

The restaurant is neat and clean.   The clerk working there when I visited was cheerful and helpful.   That's often all it takes for a weary traveler who's been on the road all day long to feel welcome and happy.

A good sandwich and a beverage, and away I went to my campground, dinner taken care of.

Service was extremely slow. There were two women, one helping another customer and the other just standing there, not knowing what to do. I suppose she just started working there. After a long wait, she finally started making my sandwich. She didn't ask if I wanted it toasted. And she wasn't particularly generous with the vegetables. Then the other one, who wasn't friendly, rang it up and quoted me a price way too high. She then corrected it after I protested, but didn't give me the receipt. I asked for it but still didn't get it until I asked again after eating the sandwich. The restaurant itself is decent and clean. Next time, I'll go to the Subway in Bishop or Lone Pine.

The map here shows the location at the intersection of I-395 and Fish Hatchery Road. WRONG! It's a few miles south on I-395 between Kearsarge and Market Streets.

Now that we have that cleared up, on with the review.

The Subway doesn't look like much from the outside. It's right next to a Chevron Station and minimart, and both look like they could use new paint or at least a pressure wash job. But walk inside and VOILA-- a decently clean and fairly newish interior. Nicht schlecht.

After camping high in the Sierra Nevada and eating camp food, the Meatball Marinara footlong sub was fabulous! Sure, we could have mosied across the street to the Still Life Cafe (with the sign "Biere et Vin" on the window) for hoity-toity haute cuisine, but this was more than enough to satisfy our appetites. Even some French-speaking touristes thought the sandwiches "pas mal". The non-French-speaking staff were friendly and quick.

Perhaps you'd do better on the other side of the street if you were trying to impress a date (and who wouldn't bring a date to the Owens Valley?), but for a satisfying meal on the road this Subway was more than enough. Our 9-year old loved it, the wife didn't complain, and my meatball sandwich was great. What more could we ask from inexpensive fast food?
