As a local, we come here often - both by boat and car. Its the best place to take visitors to the area or just enjoy a beautiful day! Best view for this area and the food is great to boot! Reasonable prices on food and drink. Oysters and shrimp in a bucket satisfy your seafood cravings.everything not fried is made on the grill and their homemade potato chips are amazing! Only downside is they are not open year round because there is no inside dining (well there is, but only for weddings, etc)
Review Source:Just camped here for memorial day weekend. Â Had a great experience. Â
We rented a trailer here and camped with a large group among multiple sites. Â The staff was very friendly and helpful, the campground, park and pool were clean and well kept, and the rental was new, clean, and well stocked. Â The camp sites were very close together, but since we were in a group, it didn't make too much of a difference.
Had a great experience and will be back again next year!
I only know about the outdoor bar and grill. So that's all I'm reviewing here. It's open on weekends from Memorial Day to Labor Day. First Impression~ Â flash back to my stellar childhood filled with boats, camping and drunken debauchery from the adults in charge. Â In other words....This place looks like a fun!
After climbing a boat load of stairs to get to the outdoor deck, I was rewarded with a stunning view of the Delta. I later discovered an elevator inside some double glass doors to the right of the bar. Which is good because those stairs didn't look like such a good idea after a evening of drinking.
Tables are set up on a very sunny uncovered outdoor deck. Some tables have umbrellas for shade. You want one of those. FYI....those shade giving umbrellas just might  fly off the deck into the water at any given moment. Exciting!  So, yes, It can get pretty breezy around sunset. Plan accordingly.
They have live music on Saturdays from 4-8. On this particular day, a kick ass band called AXIS was dishing up some tasty rock and roll. Also, for your entertainment, there will be random boaters dressed in nothing but bathing suits entering and drunkenly dancing as soon as they hit the deck.  On the day I was here, there were also several happily  toasted people checking in for one of their poker run stops. Good times.
I made the mistake of not checking the prices first, when I ordered a glass of wine from the outdoor bar shack. Based on the super casual atmosphere, I figured none of wines could be more than $7 a glass. Wrong. My glass was $13. Dang, $13?! I don't even pay that much for a whole bottle at the grocery store! I really think the bartender should warn people about that one. After checking the menu, there were plenty of choices in $7 range, Â so I made sure to get those in subsequent rounds. Â
The menu is typical bar food fare. (Burgers, salads,  hot wings, fish and chips.)  The prices range  from $3 for home fried potato chips to $13 for a NY steak sandwich. I had the steak salad for $10 which had warm strips of steak, avocados,  tomatoes, onions, romaine and iceberg lettuce with blue cheese dressing. The steak was nicely seasoned and cooked a perfect medium rare, the greens were crisp and fresh. I would  totally get it again.
This restaurant earns its four star review strictly based on the view from its outdoor restaurant. Don't come here just for the food because that's a mixed bag. Sometimes good, sometimes less so. Service is nice and friendly.  The clientele ditto. The scenery from the deck is spectacular. So, if you want a beer or a bloody mary or even some calimari, it doesn't get any better than this.  They often offer free live music, too.  One word of advice: Do phone ahead!  This bar/ restaurant is not open a lot - which  is a real bummer on a hot summer day.
Review Source:I sit here writing this and await the abdominal cramps that are associated with food poisoning. This was hands down the worst dining experience that I have EVER had. The most vile food I have ever put past my lips served up by the most incompetent server i have ever encountered. The menu states "Kobe" burgers. There is no way that thing was made with Kobe beef. It was more like a mad cow burger. Â I can't even begin to describe how gross everything my table had was. Too bad, place has a nice view and alot of potential. That show "Bar Rescue" needs to come in and clean this poorly run dump up. Also, I'm not well versed on the CA smoking laws, but there were people smoking openly everywhere in the outdoor dining area upstairs as kids ran through the filthy exhaled menthol stench. Â I'll be calling the County first thing Monday morning to verify if this is legal or not. If not, I'm anxious to file a report. I'm pissed at myself for being honest and paying for that garbage before I left. NASTY AS HELL.
Review Source:Went boating on the Delta and decided to stop for lunch. Â We were near Bethel Island and decided to check out some places to eat. Â There were free guest docks at Sugar Barge and there was outdoor patio seating wih a water view...so far, so good.
We ordered the BBQ oysters for starters and they were delicious! Â On to fish and chips and enjoyed them, too. Â I had a spicy Bloody Mary that was terrific. Â
The view was great and a good time had by all. Â Umbrellas on the outside patio and music playing in the background...nice. Â
Guess this place is a "go to" spot for us because we went two weekends in a row!
They have live music starting a 4PM on the weekends...check it out.
Me and a buddy frequently rent fishing boats here. Â Service is not the quickest but I chalk that up to a different pace of life than the bay area. Â That said, staff here is always friendly and helpful. Â I give them 5 stars not for past service but for a recent incident. Â We took a boat out and the trolling motor broke down after 2.5 hours. Â After inquiring about a discount for the inconvenience, one of the owners called me back and could not have been more professional. Â Text book great customer service: Â empathized with me, offered a partial refund then a discount on our next rental. Â I'm sure they've had professional training. Â In a nutshell, If you want to hit the Delta and whack some bass, go rent a boat from Sugar Barge!
Review Source:We visited this marina a few years ago for 5 nites. We docked our family boats (1@ 38 foot and 1 @ 20 foot) here and had a great time. The slip fees were very resonable. They have full hookups and a dump station to empty ur holding tanks. The central location on the delta is great, lots of nite spots u can try out. The bar and resturant at Sugar Barge is great!!! Good food and drinks, large flat sceens and great a/c!!! The marina is right at Franks Tract, a great hot spot for bass fishing. I had one of my best fishing trips in my lifetime!!! I caught at least 50 bass in one day. I dont think i caught 1 under 2 lbs. With the biggest at 6 lbs. Â What a great day of fishing!!! U do need to pay attention to the weather report. The delta is prone to the wind. 2 of the days we were there the wind was terrible!!!! If u ever dock here buy a map of the delta and find Lost Island!! U can only get there by boat, but OMG!!! What a great time we had on this little island!!! Theres a great little bar and lots of eye candy to look at!!!! Enjoy this place, its very nice.....
Review Source:i am very unhappy with this business, i have been going to the sugar barge for years on end, i have watched this place grow since the 70's, so last week i wanted to move my motorhome a 1990 gmc regatta, 30 footer, its in pretty good shape and i take good care of it, so i wanted to start staying there on a monthly basis and was told they have a 10 year or newer policy on the motor homes coming in, nothing older unless approved by the park, well they came by one morning they said my rv exceeded their requirements, i was a bit surprised by that, they had a chance to have me in there for 600.00 a month, but i guess they dont need the money even though the park is very empty, who knows, so if you want to stay there i would stay at russo's or somewhere else because these people lost my vote for them being a good place and i used to talk highly of them, but not anymore, thats for sure, i'm there til monday morning then i'm out of there for good, no returning, so if you have a nice older rv dont go to that place they will probably tell you it's too old, shame on this company, oh well, but it is a nice resort i will say that, thank you tracy for your help.
Review Source:Like Melissa B., I rented a boat for a pleasure cruise to celebrate my birthday. I booked a 22 foot patio boat three weeks in advance, and it had ample space for my party of 11 people (and an Australian Cattle Dog). The rental was conducted out of the convenience store. The staff attached a barbeque to the boat while we bought a propane tank (store prices were good). One of our party was over an hour late, which cut down our cruise time to 6 hours.
The staff had given us a map and pointed out nearby places to visit, but my plan was to motor out of Bethel Island, up the San Joaquin Deep Water Channel, through the Mokelumne river, and  dock in the Meadows. I had thoroughly researched the route and had multiple maps and charts, but it's always the bit of research you don't do that trips you up. In this case I'd neglected to find out how fast a patio boat can go. It goes slower than a drugged sloth. Three hours into the trip, we were still far from the Meadows; to save time I took the boring North Fork of the Mokelumne, rather than the picturesque South.
We were going full-throttle when the wake of a ski boat slammed us. The open bow plunged into the waves and water flooded in we began to sink. I slowed down and turned to the right, and the boat refloated itself, as pontoon boats will. Though our chances of sinking was slimmer than it looked, but it was still a terrifying incident (which reoccurred twice more during our journey). Being the captain, I was a bundle of nerves and had to slow down and turn aside every time a fast boat zoomed past.
Short on time, we never made it to the Meadows, instead heading back through the Delta Cross Channel Gates and down the Sacramento River. Near Isleton the Coast Guard stopped us to allow through a boat race. As we dawdled I had the sickening realization that we wouldn't make it back before dark. By the time we reached the Deep Water Channel it was dusk and the wind was up. Though everyone else on board was chowing down on BBQ, I was riven with anxiety, fearing for our fate on the open water. But the wind proved merciful and we made it to Three Mile Slough. Night had fallen. Without the aid of a friend's I-Phone's GPS, we would have been lost in the dark, but we finally limped back to Sugarbarge at 8:30.
The staff, who'd been in phone contact with us, were waiting and helped us dock. We tried cleaning as best we could, but the boat was wet and someone had made a mess with Milano cookies on the carpet. One of the lights was not working, and I feared the hull or prop was damaged. The staff said they'd look the boat over tomorrow and let me know how much the late fee, gas, cleaning and repair costs might be. I was at their mercy--they could have easily gouged me.
Instead they turned out to be completely honest. I was charged an accurate amount for being late, and the gas and cleaning bills were fair and justified. They said nothing was wrong with the boat, and that we were always welcome to return. And if I decide to revisit Bethel Island I certainly will. But not in a patio boat!
I rented a boat here for pleasure cruise purposes. I wanted to celebrate my Birthday by taking friends out onto the Delta, Â a body of water I have never really explored. Â Since I've been out in Deep East Co Co more often nowadays, I decided to take advantage of the warmer summer temps and go out on the water for the day.
I booked a party boat for 12 people with about 5 days notice- then got a call 30 min. after making that reservation stating there was an error, they only had a boat for 9 adults available. Â That was fine, because we ended up having a smaller party, and she refunded my card promptly for the $50 that the larger boat cost.
When we got there, it was a bit confusing to find the rental office. Â Driving through the R.V. park was also a site to behold. Â I will withhold judgments of Bethel Island, because everyone was nice to us, and I know a few people who live out there that are cool.
Anyway, when we found Bud, the rental guy, he was cool. Stern, but cool. You have to listen to him, do paperwork, sign stuff, and prepare for your credit card company to call you to confirm you are about to put a $1,000. deposit down at some Marina. Â
We went through rules and regs, had the boat checked out, signed waivers, checked to make sure all was in order, loaded up our stuff, and then, we were on our way! Â I actually hadn't steered or driven a motorized boat in a while, but I have 'nautical'/sailing experience. It's lucky that I do, because it was super windy that day, and when we had to drop anchor, it was useful to know how. Â Drinking and boating, truly do not mix if you have no idea what the hell or where the hell you are going. Â Be careful!
They give you a map, but BUY the map they have there for an extra $7.00. Â It's very handy and has things like buoy marking numbers and more specific details of the inlets and stuff in the area. The map they provide is very sketchy. You can also use your phones' GPS which was actually really helpful for navigation. Â We got disoriented several times. Let's not discuss stalling on the San Joaquin River, that was my bad.
Overall, the price of the boat rental plus the deposit is a little cost prohibitive, but I had so much fun. Â I would like to get a little more out into open water, and know where the hell I am going so we can find more sandy beaches and better places to hang out next time, but overall Sugar Barge Marina was a solid boat rental experience.
Checking in with the boat at the end of the day was a breeze, too.
This is one of my most memorable experiences ever.
When I first called Sugar Barge, I talked to a woman who gave me another number to find out if the marina had any jet skis available for Sunday afternoon. I called that number, and the man who answered, Bud, told me to call the first number I called as they had the list of
names of people who had purchased the Living Social deal. I then spoke to that same woman, who verified my deal and then told me to call the other number again to reserve my jet ski!
When I called that number again, Bud told me to hold on as the woman who had the names of the Living Social deal had to walk over to him to give the information. That was a frustrating experience!
When we arrived, it took us about 45 minutes to read and sign the paperwork, and watch the safety video. We were told that the jet ski did not have any horns nor any whistles, in case we got stuck. We were given a map, their phone number and were told that we would not get
lost (yeah right!). At 5pm, after reviewing the jet ski for existing damages, we set off on our adventure.
For 1.5 hours, we had a grand time exploring the area, but yes, it is possible to get very lost! Our map got wet, but fortunately, one of the members our group remembered the twist and turns we took and was able to guide us back towards the marina. While on this path back,
we landed in a lot of seawood. One of us jumped off, and tried to yank the seaweed out, but was unsuccessful after doing this repeatedly for 20 minutes. Because we couldn't rev up the engine and smoke started coming out of the jet ski, we decided to call the marina at 6:45pm, 15 minutes before the jet ski was due back. We told them the situation and told them we didn't know what exact location we were located. They said that it might take hours for them to get to us and that we should take out the seaweed and flag down a boater. They told us that we had whistles on our jackets, but we told them we did not. After screaming and waving our hands for 10 minutes, a boater saw us and came to us. He towed us back to his bigger boat and told us the exact location on the chart and gave us GPS coordinates. He has been boating in that area for over 20 years, so he said they shouldn't have any problem finding us if we gave them our location. We called the marina back and gave them this information.
They told us that they would ask Vessel Assist and the Coast Guard to come and rescue us.
While we were on the phone with the marina and with the Coast Guard numerous times, they still couldn't find us! Finally, Vessel Assist found us, at nearly 9pm. When they arrived, they told us that they saw us earlier, but didn't come to us because they were told we were "alone"! At the marina, they told us that the office was closed and we would have to wait until the next day to see if there are any damages to the water ski, if any. The $750 charge was still held on my credit card. While we found out that there was no damage to the jet
ski, it took 2 days for the manager to clear the $750 hold on my credit card. We were charged $45 for using 3/4 tank of gas (I thought we had used half, nor were we given a receipt). They did not charge us for the Vessel Assist, which we were thankful for. All in all, it was a memorable experience, and while the marina handled the situation
professionally, I don't want to visit the Delta again.
the upstair deck is open and serving lunch from ll-8 on Sundays.
We shared a fabulous hamburger made with Kobe blend beef.
It was really tasty. Â Â Its nice and peaceful overlooking the water. .
just a little background music no band playing loud music. Â The grill is on on the patio . . the deck has beautiful umbrellas over the tables . . looks
festive. Â Service was superb.
As in the past, I remain brief.
Hey it's on the water can't say that about very many places where we're nearly surrounded by water. Docks are nice, overnight with boat is CHEAP! Drinks are decent and you overlook, you guessed it, the water! During summer there's live music. For FREE how often does that happen? The staff are friendly!
Why only four stars? Well the food gives me the impression that it's banged out, but still it fills you up. The calamari rings were pretty good. I'd avoid the heavier meat dishes, I'm not sure they want to cook anything other than well done or rare.
We were touring around the Delta on a power boat when we decided that we were hungry. Since we found ourselves near Bethal Island, we decided to stop by for some lunch. Â The Sugar Barge had guest docks which made it convenient to stop in for a bit. Â After docking the boat, we dropped in to this casual restaurant and order their BBQ dishes, burgers and a ice cold drink. Â Mmmm... Â yummie. A great find but a bit out of the main stream if you are traveling up the river. (pun intended).
