We had a great time! Beautiful location, world-class service, and a ton to do if you are outdoorsy. We only stayed for 2 nights, but we wish we would have stayed longer, because it was so relaxing. We loved taking the ski lift to take pictures and just enjoy the scenery. Plus, its close enough to Orem and Provo, that when we got a little antsy one night, it wasn't an ordeal to go some place else for dinner. We went on one of the hottest weekends of the year, which was a bummer because it was too hot to be enjoyable at times, especially since our room had no A/C. Yup, no A/C though. I am not going to complain about that though, especially since most of the time A/C probably isn't needed most of the time. I am giving this room 4 starts for one reason only. The room had a satellite remote and instructions on how to use the DVD player, but guess what? No satellite receiver and no DVD player. Granted, we didn't go to up there to lay about and watch TV, but it would have been nice to turn on the telly and watch the news or a movie at night, but whatever, we kept ourselves busy by sitting on the deck of our room and watching the ground squirrels play.
Review Source:I am a HUGE fan of Robert Redford, the Sundance catalog and Sundance film festival ... but I am completely SHOCKED by all the good reviews of the Sundance Resort. Â It was so bad that we ended our vacation early. Â The food was terrible, and the resort itself was so hokey and commercial, it was a complete tourist trap. Â The people that worked at the hotel were laughably unhelpful, although I must say that they were kind. Â We wanted to love this place [we planned an entire trip around being there] but it was a huge disappointment. We ended up driving a little ways and booked a last minute room at the Montage in Deer Valley and had a much better experience all around.
Review Source:What an amazing year-round resort. We took the chair lift up for a fabulous hike to Stewart Falls. The hike was an incredible 3-mile experience in which we saw wildlife, water falls and breath taking scenery. Hiking Sundance Resort is a must, especially to experience Stewart Falls. Afterwards, we enjoyed a 5-star dining experience at The Tree Room. (Amy at The Tree Room is the BEST). There is something for everyone here and it is one of the most relaxing & rejuvenating resorts in Utah!
Review Source:We stayed in Park City but decided to try out Sundance for a day.....loved it so much we went back to ski for a second day. Â The 45 min. drive was easy to Sundance. Â What a nice resort without the Park City ski resort area prices. Â My son had a ski lesson for $75 including his lift ticket. Â I paid $44 for half day lift ticket. Â The back side has some really nice runs too. Â The moutain is small, but who neeeds those huge resorts that gouge you? Â The people who work here are very nice and I would go back and ski there again anytime. Â Nice to find this hidden treasure that I have not been to before, but rest assured, I will be back.
Review Source:Sundance is a beautiful place to ski and stay!! Â We came here on vacation for 5 days last year and skied at Sundace twice and at Alta once. Â I liked Sundance better because it was not as crowded and there are some fun trails that include cutouts of cowboys and Indians (yes, I am a novice...)! Â There is a fully functioning restaurant at the top of the mountain to eat lunch and enjoy breathtaking view. Â Down on lower ground they have a bar (owl bar), cafe, casual restaurant (Foundry Grill) and fine dining restaurant (Tree Room) - and all are excellent dining options!! Â There's a spa too if you're not in to sking.
Review Source:Solid skiing on a nice and historic mountain. Â Views of Mother Nature in a pristine setting make Sundance a very special place. Â Mr. Redford as done a wonderful job preserving this gem. Â Come mid-week (non-holiday) and you'll have this mountain all to yourself. Â Each every employee we came in contact with (from the ski rental counter to lift operators, cafe employees, ski instructors an even the guy directing traffic in the parking lot) had a terrific attitude and were incredibly helpful and down to earth. Â Emily and Neil were our kids' ski instructors today and my boys raved about how great they were. Â We can't wait to go back!
Review Source:I've got to vent...so just bear with me. Â My stay there went from magical to "tragical" to comical.
This trip was a celebration of my 40th birthday and we wanted to spend a nice weekend with another couple that are very good friends of ours. Â We thought Sundance would provide the atmosphere and service we were looking for. Â I was wrong...so very wrong. Â For a second, I felt we were in the midst of another National Lampoon's Sundance Vacation
Red Flag #1: To begin with, we ended up calling the resort directly because we had some questions on the suites that weren't clear from visiting the website. Â The reservations person that helped us seemed rushed and not knowledgeable of the location or amenities of the suites or their availability. Â Tip: if you don't know, don't get on the phone with customers. Â If you still insist on answering the phone, don't start every response with "uhhh, I'm not sure, but I think...."
Red Flag #2: I realize some rates are only available on-line. Â I've spent over 50 nights in hotels this year. Â But when the reservations person says "Best Available Rate" doesn't that mean you can't save $10 per night by hanging up the phone and reserving online? Â Nope, not at Sundance..."Best Available" means something else. Â I hung up the phone, called my buddy and told him to book his suite. Â Since I had already gotten the answers to our questions, he went online. Â Guess who got the real "Best Available" rate. Â Here's when you answer "uhhh, I'm not sure, but I think it was your buddy."
Red Flag #3: After realizing at check-in that I didn't get the best rate, I laughed it off as a $20 phone call since we were staying two nights. Â To say the quality of the suites was nowhere near comparable is like saying that Utah has "a few" Mormons. Â One suite had a gorgeous view of a bubbling creek, real wood Adirondack chairs, duraflame fire starters for the fireplace, 6 clean towels, a working icemaker and pillow cases without yellow stains (yuck). Â The other suite had none of those things. Â At this point, I'm getting tense.
Red Flag #4: After providing Susan (front desk) some feedback, we were initially rebuffed with some vague explanation that "all the suites have different owners". Â After standing our ground, we were offered an "upgrade" to a similar suite without a gorgeous view, but a hot tub. Â Only upon riding to the new suite did Nigel (the only guy with a clue) very cautiously warn us that most hot tubs on the property don't operate since the owners don't like the upkeep required. Â Of course, the hot tub was ice cold and stayed that way throughout. Â At this point, I'm in full Clark Griswald mode.
Red Flag #5: The next morning, we had a nice breakfast. Â Really nice! Â In fact, it was the highlight of our stay. Â What would have made it a little nicer was the fact that my "Best Available" rate did NOT include legitimate breakfast coupons I would have received at check-in with my buddy. Â You see his had a "Z" on them and mine did not. Â So when Susan checked me in and said "Here are your breakfast coupons" she was talking about something else. Â As the waitress is explaining this to me, I'm looking around for Ashton Kutcher to come around the corner explaining I've been PUNK'd. Â Ha-ha! Â Nope, no Ashton...or Demi or Mila for that matter.
Red Flag #6: My buddy eventually stopped laughing at our experience since this was my birthday weekend and it was getting embarrassing. Â So we go to check-out on Sunday morning. Â We had charged the breakfast to the room since we had only brought our "breakfast coupons" to the restaurant. Â Susan again couldn't find the correct method of making the customer happy, so Coby (or Koby) stepped in and comped the $32 breakfast from the day before. Â It was nice of him. Â I paid cash for another $66.97 of souvenirs that had also been charged to the room. Â I remember I paid cash because I gave Susan $100 and ended up calculating the change in my head for her: $37.03. Â TODAY: guess who gets a charge on his AMEX for $66.97?
Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Sundance!!
Sundance...When I was growing up..You skipped school and headed up to Sundance. ( I don't condone this) the week days the lines were next to nothing and the ski runs were great. I have great memories of sitting in the lodge sipping coco and listening to the sound of the clunky snowboots.
The best thing about sundance is how easy it is to get there. The view is stunning! If you go on the weekend...Please make sure to go early parking can be a bit of a hassle. Everything is centrally located and it's very easy to get around.
Sundance Resort is a great place to have a ski vacation!
Just finished up on our family vacation at Sundance Resort celebrating my parents 45th anniversary. I have to say that all expectations were exceeded.
We reserved the 7 bedroom house. Even with 3 families and two sets of grandparents we all felt so comfortable as if we were in our own home.
The staff at Sundance are very helpful and  nice especially Tiffany in the front office. It's a great touch to have shuttle rides from the cabins to the lodge or vice versa in private Sundance SUVs.  Just a call from the house  can get you practically whatever is needed.
Plenty of moderately challenging activities to accomplish. Not many for kids under 5 as I had to carry my 3 year old girl up most of the mountains. Not a problem though.
With the superb accommodations, environment of the mountains and waterfalls, and friendliness of the staff I have no choice but to give Sundance Resort 5 stars. It was a fantastic trip with the entire family that we will all never forget.
Can't get enough of this place. Â Love that it's such a small resort and people are so friendly there. Â The mountains for skiing aren't intimidating and the mountain biking in the summer there is aaaaamazing. Â I got a season pass there last year and it was the best money ever spent. Â Spent the whole winter skiing and then the whole summer mountain biking. Â I go up to the grill room restaurant only on special occasions because it is my favorite place in the whole world.
Review Source:This was my fourth or fifth time at Sundance. Â I've lost count at this point, but the magic is the same every single time.
There are lots of different cabins you can stay at in Sundance, depending on the size of your party. Â I stay at the same River Run cabin every time, which has 4 beds, two of which are twins, two of which are queen. Â There's also 3 couches, 1 of which turns into a fold-out bed. Â You could really have a ton of people join you, but as I've learned over the years, as an avid vacation "organizer," Â it's incredibly hard just to get 6 people on a vacation together, much less more than that.
However many people come with you to Sundance, you're going to have an amazing time. Â They have a wonderful restaurant and bar (with live music on the weekends), they have a spa with every treatment you can imagine (I availed myself of the deep tissue massage after 3 days of skiing and snowmobiling), they have a Nordic center if you want to give snow-shoeing or cross-country skiing a try, and, of course, the lifts are 50-60 yards from your front door.
It's not inexpensive to stay here, but you get what you pay for at a wonderful remote resort like this one.
PS Â Remember that Robert Redford started this place, and part of his private library are in the bookshelves by the front desk/check-in. Â Make some coffee or tea, grab a book off the shelf, and read. Â Just don't take them back to your room. :-)
PPS Â I got to meet Mark Cuban, totally by accident, on this trip. Â You'll generally run into a star at some point during your trip, but most especially during the weeks in and around the Film Festival.
Spent a weekend up here and absolutely loved this place. Very rustic feel but with amazing service. Every meal we had was outstanding. Tree room, the Foundry and even the deli! The Owl Bar is a great place to grab a drink and catch some music.
The rooms are fantastic. Small kitchen, jacuzzi tub and a nice deck are among the things that were great surprises!
We were lucky to get a perfect powder ski day as well. Not a huge mountain but no lift lines and great skiing.
Pros: Amazing Food. Very genuine service. Not a snobby resort feel at all.
Cons: Its pricey but a good spend.
If you could break out service, I would give the folks who work at Sundance 5 stars. Â Everyone is friendly, everyone is helpful, everyone wants you to have a good time. Â Even the waitresses who apologized for the weak Utah pours in my martini at the Owl Bar made me feel like a jackass for wanting a Texas sized Vodka.
We found this place on the interwebs for a very reasonable price. Â Upon arrival with two of my herd of kids, we were placed in a very nice lodge style room which unfortunately did not include a sofa bed as requested. Â After calling the front desk, we were moved, which included no small doing from the staff who had to lug too much luggage through deep powder to the awesome upgraded room. Â For my trouble (?) Â they also comped breakfast for my family the next morning.
The downside is at Sundance, you are at Sundance. Â There is no walking to a restaurant, and even driving to town -in good conditions - is at least 20 minutes. Â The resort experience, including night skiing and the people, is great. Â The bar is lively (although I get thirsty thinking about the Utah bar tending deficiencies), and the on-site restaurant is exceptional.
This review is based solely on the Spa at Sundance. It was terrible. I got a manicure and it was hands down the worst and most expensive manicure I have ever received. A 30 minute manicure cost $45 and they didn't even cut me cuticles. For $45 I basically got a polish change and it was a poor polish change at that. They barely even shaped my nails. I would never return to the Spa at Sundance.
Review Source:Beautiful area! Â Neat gift shop, found a couple of perfect gifts. Â We did the full moon ski lift ride at night, it would have been a great experience if our nerves had not gotten the best of us. Â They also run the lifts during the day in off season, I bet the view is unbeatable!
We were a little underwhelmed by our $30 sandwiches for 2 lunch we had here. Â However Clay's Old Fashioned at the Owl Bar was very reasonably priced and the service was very friendly!
Before we were ever engaged, my then-boyfriend and I took a day trip from Park City to see Bridal Veil Falls. Â After hiking the falls, we decided to turn into the Sundance Resort to see what their food options were (turns out they are top notch). Â As we started our drive into the resort, I became excited about the creek that meanders along the property's entrance road. Â When we finally pulled into the resort, I was blown away by the beauty of it all: the view of Mount Timpanogos, the babbling brook, the rustic buildings, even the super chill dude who directed us to a parking spot. Â He's a nice touch, generally summing up the vibe of the employees. Â It was during this visit that I (secretly) decided that, pending an engagement, I wanted this to be the place where we got married. Â
Fast forward two years...
This August we had our wedding at the Sundance Resort. Â It was perfect. Â Here's why:
The groom (admittedly that one was out of Sundance's hands)...
The natural beauty of the resort is like no other. Â The setting provided many fun things for our guests to do during the weekend: mountain biking, tubing down the river, scenic lift rides, horseback riding to Stewart Falls (awesome)...you name it, they did it. Â People who weren't there are convinced that we have a fake backdrop in our wedding pictures because it looks so pretty. Â They also missed all the fun...oh well! Â
The Sundance staff was flexible, nice, and genuinely excited for us. Â Katie Todd, the catering manager, made sure that all of our requests were more than taken care of. Â She oversaw everything and it all came together perfectly on the day of. Â Throughout the planning process, she was friendly and helpful. Â The bellman who drove me to meet my groom for pictures pre-wedding was so funny and excited for us. Â He really took the pressure off the whole "first look" scenario. Â Landon, who seemed to be the head server during our wedding, was prepping things for our reception when I was getting ready to walk down the aisle with my dad. Â He was so complimentary and enthusiastic about how things were coming together beforehand. Â I knew I didn't need to worry about potential disasters. Â And, at the end of the night, HE thanked US for an awesome/fun night! Â What a guy!
The food was fantastic--not wedding food fantastic, but any kind of food fantastic. Â For our cocktail hour we chose the baked artichoke and cheese dip (out of this world), vegetable crudite, fruit platter, and flatbread pizza. Â For our reception, we had the pepper crusted filet with mango chutney and the grilled vegetable and goat cheese strudel. Â Our guests are still raving that it was one of the best meals they've had.
We ended our night with one drink at the Owl Bar and they had a great live band (Marinade) playing. Â They loved the fact that I showed up, still in my wedding regalia, and even offered me a free shot. Â
All in all, we could not have asked for a better wedding experience thanks to Sundance and the wonderful staff there! Â We will be back to celebrate anniversaries in the future!
This review is strictly on the horseback riding they offer here. I grew up taking horseback riding lessons until it got to be too much driving out for them. It's really hard to find a decent place to go and free ride where I live, so as soon as I booked a trip to Utah this summer, I knew I had to find a place to ride out in the mountains. A friend who lives in Sandy suggested this place and sure enough it delivered.
My boyfriend and I went on the 2 hour "Stewart Falls" ride. The ride is guided and runs $79 a person. That's a pretty good deal, at the end of the day our total was $200 for the both of us to ride for 2 hours through the beautiful mountains. The views are really breathtaking and I felt like I was in a movie. And there was only us, the horses, and the trail. It felt very natural and relaxing.
The guides explained a lot of the different areas, and kept asking us if we wanted to stop for pictures, etc. Our two guides were young guys (I'm guessing high school), and one of them actually had a girl with him... from what I gathered she was some kind of love interest of one of the guys and she was riding for free, so that was kind of weird having her tag along, but I really didn't mind at the end of the day.
We really just did a lot of walking, and I asked if we could trot a little (I knew asking to canter or gallop would be nixed immediately) and the main guide said the horses aren't used for that and are trained to just walk, but he let us do maybe 50 feet of light trotting just to make me happy. In the end, I had a great time and we left with lots of beautiful pictures so we tipped our guides well. Two main things to note:
1) It is kind of hard to find if you aren't familiar with the resort. It was a bit of a drive for us to get out here, and once we did get here we had to stop at the check-in desk at the lodge for directions. They were really helpful though and gave us a map.
2) You will get REALLY dirty!! Lots of dust kicking up (even from walking). Be prepared to shower immediately after and throw any and all clothing in the wash.
3) Eat beforehand. Or at least if you are like me and can't go 4 hours without eating. The drive in took a while and we wanted to get there a little early. We didn't have any snacks and there isn't any place on the resort, or once you're at the barn, to purchase any. We brought water bottles and the guides let us bring them in the saddle bags, but we didn't even take them out. And after the ride we were famished from being in the sun and not eating beforehand.
I was just here to shop, eat, and browse, and had a fun time. Â The skiing looked fun too, I'll have to check it out sometime.
The little art shop around the back had a lot of fun and unique pieces of jewelry -- the earrings and other pieces made out of old biscuit tins was really fun (and not expensive).
The old timey bar with its cozy fire and friendly service was a picture perfect place for a glass of wine, although I didn't love the sundance sauvignon blanc, and thought it was definitely overpriced at about $10/glass.
Sundance is everything everyone say it is. Fun, quiet, secluded and beautiful.
Nestled in the Wasatch, away from it all Sundance will make you feel at home. There are no lift lines and a day pass is only $45. Although there are only three lifts, there is more than enough terrain to keep you busy all day.
I would go back any day to ski or to just marvel at the surrounding beauty. If you can appreciate nature and all that it has to offer then you will love Sundance.
The Sundance Resort is about 40 minutes outside of Park City. Â It amazes me to talk to people who have been coming to Park City for years - but who've never ventured over to discover Sundance. Â Stunning place with an amazing brunch scene. Â A truly unique spot in the US. Â Try to get here if you can - it's breathtaking old west at its finest.
Review Source:My review is on the mountain and nothing more.
First, Sundance has beyond cheap lift tickets. Â I am used to paying $95+ for a day of snowboarding in Denver if it is not on my pass. Â Our tickets were $42 if I remember correctly. Â Pretty sweet.
Second, Sundance has NO lift lines. Â None. Â I was shocked that I could literally walk up and sit down on the lift. Â No standing around for 10 minutes waiting to get scanned or to take another run. Â It was insane and fantastic for me and my bf.
Third, Sundance runs are so much fun for spring conditions. Â There are fantastic rollers and it faces the south on most sides so the snow was super soft.
This was my 3rd time back to the resort; the last 2 times were for a quick 1 day ski-a-thon. This place is perfect for that, but probably too small for a long weekend, IMO. Lots of good blues and blacks and the employees are not pissed off to be there.
I can't speak to the amenities, or food or the lodging, but if you want to spend a day skiing surrounding by beauty, this is a great option.
Wonderful, wonderful place!! The Sundance Resort is nestled in the valley underneath beautiful mountains. The whole grounds are very beautiful and serene. The "room" I stayed in had a large kitchen, living room, bedroom, bathroom and closet. I was stunned at the size. The bed was very comfortable. The staff was very accomodating and went out of their way to make sure that I was well taken care of. If you want to get away from the city and stay at a resort in a beautiful setting, then this is the place for you.
Review Source:I am shocked at the huge number of 5 star reviews that Sundance has. All I can say is that it has the potential to be 5 stars; however, we did not have such an experience. We arrived in the rain with a lot of luggage as we were driving cross country. They took us to a cabin/room that was far away and was up 3 flights of outdoor cobblestone stairs, across a bridge and around a corner to our room. The person who took us didn't even bring an umbrella and we got soaked. There was no conceivable way to get our luggage to our room without getting soaked and/or breaking our backs. We requested another room which wasn't as nice; however, it was in the same section (Mandan) as the spa. This made sense as we had booked the spa package and had spa appointments early the next morning. Why they hadn't figure this out on their own, beats me.
Everyone was pleasant, they just weren't very helpful and/r useful. It's NOT a one building hotel. It's a sprawling property in the mountains that requires driving - so, be prepared for this. And, the people who work there just didn't provide us with the depth of information that would have made our stay smooth and efficient.
Our room was log cabin style with a nice sized room and bathroom as well as a mini kitchen with dishes, etc. It was decorated nicely and was very clean. The fireplace was wood (they have gas, too); however, it was not working when we stayed there.
The restaurant there is also nice, but it's overpriced as is the spa. Everything there is very pleasant, and with a lot of potential. If you go, do your research ahead of time and ask a lot of questions! I'd definitely go back; however, I'd make sure to request a cabin that wasn't too far away and would also be sure to have my own umbrella!
One of the best vacations I've had in quite a long time. Â We stayed in the Cuckoos Nest and enjoyed every amenity it had; hot tub, lap pool, sauna, pool table, wet bar, amazing views... need I say more?
Spent five days eating great food, hiking to the falls, horseback riding, and I even took a pottery class (the class instructor, Tim, is really cool). Â Aside from some crazy changes in weather and a little rain this was an amazing vacation and I would jump on the chance to go back.
I'm going to tell you a story. Â It's a long one, so kick back and enjoy. Â Go get some popcorn or something. Â I recommend Jolly Time's single bags. Â They're good, and filled with fibah.
So, this story begins on a very very warm midafternoon at the Sundance resort. Â I checked in quickly and got a car ride up to Mandan. Â I had been switched into a suite, and found out the wonders of good living :). Â Jacuzzi bath, DirecTV, front porch, the works. Â The entire room is decked out in wood and natural goodness, ranging from the natural soaps in the bathroom to the older-looking fireplaces. Â The suites are perfectly set up for either ski weather or non-ski weather.
In terms of getting around, if you want to get exercise, you'll get your exercise. Â It's about a 10 minute walk from Mandan down to the main area of Sundance, and most of the other housing groupings are similar in distance from the general front area of the resort. Â You can also get a ride down, but the hiking trails up and down are quite the trip (they wind back and forth, bringing you on an adventure every time you head down. Â And if you want something longer, there are trails that you can take that bring you to waterfalls, larger mountains, and more adventurous places within the resort. Â You can even do this on the ski lift! (There are also mountain bikes to rent, an amenity that adds to the overall exploration of the entire place. Â While I didn't get a chance to rent one or explore as much as I wanted due to a head cold, all of this stuff was really cool to know about, in the case I had been feeling better or had more time).
The resort's amenities also make it stand out. Â You want to grab a quick bite and chill with book and a beer? Â Go to the Deli. Â You want a much larger bar experience? The Owl Bar is right for you. Â You want full food? Â Go to either the Foundry Grill or the restaurant with a Tree in it. Â You want a spa treatment? Â There's a spa available. Â There are also yoga classes, and canned animals (stuffed animals, that is, at the General Store). Â You'll want to stock up on regular amenities down in Provo, but for the most part, it's quite useful.
Sundance also serves a variety of purposes. Â Conferences, ski trips, hiking, it's all there. Â You want to do something here, you can do it. Â Their catering people are excellent and put together some incredible meals (trout, yum!)
One final note: the staff is excellent. Â I have a story to end this review: Â I locked myself out of my suite about an hour into the shenanigans. Â Realizing this, I stopped by the front desk, and the woman up there was nothing but helpful in giving me another key to my suite. Â They were also able to answer all of my questions (and I had more than a few) during my trip.
Overall, this place is incredible. Â I can't say enough nice things. Â It's beautiful, and it's great for any time of year or purpose. Â You'll want to stock up on regular amenities before you go up the mountain, as while the Deli does have some stuff, it's mostly organic, save for the beer and soda. Â But overall, it's a great place for all times of the year. :-D
The Sundance Resort, about 40 minutes outside of Park City, is one of the best ski resorts I've ever been to.
First of all, the resort is TINY...and not in a bad way....it's tiny in an upscale log cabin, pinot noir by the fireplace, looking a little too good for apres ski kind of tiny. Â And it's GORGEOUS. Â The building are all weather wood with beautiful metal detailing, the resort as i saw it is like stepping back into the old west but with amenities of the current day. Â We didn't stay at the resort so i can't comment on the rooms but from what I saw, I am sure they are gorgeous.
The actual mountain is small, with maybe 5 lifts? But the views of the canyons and mountains are remarkable and the terrain is actually quite good. Â We were lucky enough to show up on a day that it snowed about 15 inches and we just did the same runs (Juniors and a few others) over and over because it was so great! Â The mountain has a wide range of beginner and intermediate terrain and also has a back bowl which is more advanced. Â It was such a breath of fresh air to be at such a nice resort, not too crowded (even on a saturday) with friendly staff and a real "homey" feeling.
I would love to stay at Sundance the next time I am in town and sample the 3 (i think!) restaurants they have on-site and really explore the entire resort, which includes Art Centers, Screening Rooms, Bars, A cross-country/snowshoe area, and more!
I loved it so much here that, even in my singledom, i'm already planning my wedding at Sundance!
I went out Provo for a two week training class a couple of years ago. Â I originally expected that I would have both Saturday and Sunday off to go skiing. Â It turned out that I was only going to have Sunday off so I decided to go to the closest resort which turned out to be Sundance (Robert Redford's place).
Sundance is probably the smallest mountain resort in Utah. It has both an alpine (downhill) area and a nordic (XC) area. Â Since I only had the one day, I had to rent equipment and Utah was in the middle of drought I decided to go XC skiing. Â If I remember right I spent $25 for ski rentals and a trail use pass.
The XC trails are up above the Alpine trails and are a challenging drive along a narrow road.
I ended up having an enjoyable time even though the snow was lighter than usual. Â Most of the upper trails were closed. Â After a couple of hours I was tired. Â I took a break and went back out for couple more runs and then called it a day. Â All in all a well spent $25.
I want to try the Alpine area one of these days. Â I think I will like it. Â I am holding off on giving the fifth star until I get that chance.
Ok, Sundance is a great little ski area. Â How come no one even mentioned it? Â
Utah has magnificent mountains - primarily the Wasatch Range. Â "Greatest Snow on Earth!" Â Ski areas are around every corner - Deer Valley, Snow Bird, Park City, Alta, Beaver Mtn, Brian Head, Brighton, Powder Mtn, Snowbasin, Solitude, Wolf Mtn, but none better than Sundance. Â Probably the smallest of them all, but the skiing & snowboarding is great. Â
To get to this one you have to go up Provo Canyon just outside of the Provo-Orem city area. Â It's just a few miles, past Bridal Veil Falls and well worth the trip, summer or winter.
This is where the Sundance Film Festival started, until it outgrew this small resort and was relocated to Park City. Â Also in the summer there is a outdoor performance up on the mountain. Â Always a show worth attending.
Yes,they have food and shops, but so do all the ski areas. Â Don't come here for the shopping, come her for the great outdoors. Â It is one of the most spectacular places to visit in a state of mind boggling beauty. Â Do not miss Sundance, Utah. Â Once you leave this incredible place you will dream of going back for the rest of your life.
It was so hard to leave this peaceful place. Â The resort is beautiful, rustic, relaxed and completely down to earth. Â Although prices are high they avoid being pretentious. Â Their food is fantastic and the rooms are huge. Â The skiing is not the best but is great for a family or for beginners. Â The owl bar is a perfect place to have a drink after a day of skiing. Â Sit by the fire and play liars dice to relax. Â The Tree Room is great, the Ahi and the Steak are the best.
Review Source:Although disappointed that we didn't catch a glimpse of the Sundance Kid himself, Â this is a gorgeous place of breathtaking natural beauty and panoramic views. Â We went in the Fall and rode the chairlift up to the top of the mountain- the colors were magnificent. Â There are lots of restaurant choices, lodging, artwork, recreational activities and historic old photographs to look at. Â A little babbling brook runs right through the middle of it, which makes for ideal lunching or a great photo-op. Â The deli is great. I got an italian sandwich and its where I learned how indispensable a splash of balsamic vinegar and olive oil are on an italian sandwich. I will never have another one without balsamic and olive oil. Â I also purchased a set of handblown glass tumblers from their unique art shack where they have artisans making really nice art pieces and glassware from recycled glass.
