Very good sushi. Â The service and food are both excellent.
They could keep the floor cleaner. Â I've been several times lately and noticed how dirty the floor under the tabels is.
That aside.... Their Sushi is great. Â Excellent variety and the quality is top-notch. Â They use a variety of sauces and roe to garnish the sushi making them beautiful as well as delicious. Some of the sushi is "Fusion" sushi which adds creativity to the sushi. Â Try the Mozzarella sushi or the James Dean.
Service has always been excellent. Â Very attentive wait staff as well as sushi chefs at the bar.
Will go again.
I love sushi and I crave it often. However, I'm usually skeptical about trying a sushi place in the Sac area. Hubs and I were STARVING and we wanted something fresh, not too expensive, and new. I found Sushimono on Yelp and thought we could give it a try. The 50% off rolls seemed appealing.
This place is somewhat small, and upon first walking in it was mucky. Also we stood there awkwardly for a while until someone finally noticed us. When we finally got a table we were pleasantly surprised that we made it for happy hour. Buy 2 get 1 free rolls! Wow. Since we were so hungry we ordered 6 rolls. Err, our eyes were bigger than our stomachs. Here's what we ordered:
JAMES DEAN
LEMON TREE
ORANGE TREE
PINEAPPLE TREE Â
MANGO SUNSHINE
MYSTERY ROLL
They were ALL good and so delicious. My favorite was the Jame Dean roll. For the mystery roll you pick out of a bowl. We got the Wild Fire which was pretty cool but quite spicy.
I did not get sick and I didn't have any problems with the food. I would definitely come back.
My son and I love coming here for a sushi fix. Its close to home and they treat us like family. I've found after returning to other 'big name' sushi places that I've come to like the sushi here better, and its so much more reasonably priced. I've brought a lot of friends over the past year or so they've been opened, and everyone has become a returning customer. The portions of fish on the rolls are big, as are the rolls themselves, and everything has always tasted fresh. They have always been receptive to my input, if I wanted something more spicy - bam! Spicy it was. Want to change a roll to add or remove something, just ask. Some would say its small, I'd call it 'cozy'. If you're looking for fancy expensive bland sushi stay away. If you want friendly, tasty, and inexpensive, this is the spot!
Review Source:I'm leaving 1 star because I have to. Both my daughter and I got food poisoning after going there and now its a week later and I looked at my bank account and they changed my tip amount on the receipt! I used to go there all the time but I will NEVER be back!!! The service was horrible as well we had to wait almost 30 min for 2 rolls to come out.
Review Source:God I hate this place.
I've eaten here probably 5 times. The first 3 visits were okay. Food was pretty good. The whole "Buy 2 rolls, get 1 free" caught my eye immediately. The service was good, they filled up our waters when needed, checked on us often. Overall I was pretty happy and thought I would regularly visit.
Then my next visit happened.. I LOVE unagi. It's my favorite. So I order 2 different rolls with ungai on it, and both rolls still had BONES in them! And they didn't taste fresh at all. Ugh it was so gross. I picked off all the eel and ate the rest. Didn't tip, didn't have intentions on coming back.
But then I decided to go one more time. My friends wanted to go, so I decided to give them one more chance. Unfortunately, that's the day they lost my business for good and anyone who asks me about this place. The unagi was the most disgusting thing I have ever eaten. It was not fresh at all and there were so many bones I couldn't even bring myself to eat around it.
The only reason I am giving it 2 stars is because the staff is pretty friendly and I love that they do buy 2 get 1 free. I wish other places did that.
I will not be returning.
My husband and I used to come often when they first opened. As I remember it was good. But over the last 6 months we have been twice. The last two times my distinct recollection is of sashimi that is dull, lifeless and tasteless. Also, the miso soup not hot enough and has chunks in the bottom, chewy, and I'm not referring to the soy.
Now the other thing is that I was dining alone tonight. I was seated at a chair without a proper table setting. When she took my order she seemed sweet enough, overly sappy, I asked for hot tea. When she came back with my tea it was  a single cup, not a pot, and not properly heated. I then I asked for sweetener, she said yes but I never saw it.  I never did get a placemat, and my other items straggled in.
I was not impressed. Appears to me, they had their hay days, now it's all mediocre to poor from here. Needless to say, I won't be coming back.
I like Sushimono. The chefs and the servers are very friendly. The sushi is great and the prices are fantastic! I ordered the mono roll and the rainbow roll. The fish was fresh and we got our rolls very quickly. I think the only down side is that the restaurant is a bit small. I would recommend this restaurant to all my friends. Wonderful spot to catch up with friends or take someone out on a date.
Review Source:When I first started going here, I loved it. The gentlemen working the sushi bar was very kind and made our experience even better. Great food and prices. But recently I haven't had the best experiences. They started charging 50¢ for an extra side of spicy mayo (orange sauce) Not to big of a deal. Then I decided to go there at night and there was a 25 minute wait which I expected. Instead of waiting outside the front door we asked if we can sit in the outside eating area until there was room for us inside. We asked them to turn on the heaters outside and they told us no because we were waiting to eat inside. It was about 40 degrees. I was really disappointed with the customer service. We had a group and was going to spend a good amount of money, but I guess there heaters cost more to run than making us happy while we wait.
Review Source:I'm on the fence about this place. I've been here several times and it's missing something. Perhaps its the hip-hop, attempt to be pop-trendy vibe that I don't dig or that they have all these gimmicks, like buy two rolls get the 3rd free etc. They don't have oysters, they don't have uni, they cater towards very Americanized sushi rolls will lots of fluff - don't get me wrong, its good, but it's just not great. I do like there new outside patio, however I'm partial to sitting at the sushi bar. I miss the the feel of a traditional sushi bar, Sushimono strikes me as a knockoff Mikunis (of which I am NOT a fan of either - do to their pop-trendy vibe). My quest continues for the best sushi place in Fair Oaks.
Review Source:If you like rolls, this is a place to go try. They have quite the selection for it and also have other things on the menu. They had ikura the 2times I had gone and it was delicious! I'm definitely going back, it's a neat little sushi place near by and I've yet to try the rest on their menu! :)
Review Source:My sister and I came here for lunch and I was definitely underwhelmed. We were seated quickly at the sushi bar but had a really hard time getting the sushi chefs attention to order, despite being the only customers in the restaurant. We ordered 4 rolls: No 2, Orange Tree, Mango Sunshine and a Spicy Tuna. The rolls were all really bland. If I had ordered sashimi it would have been fine, but when I order a spicy roll I expect it to at least be a little bit spicy and when I order rolls with basil and cilantro I expect to taste them at least.
The prices are decent, they have half off rolls, but the rolls are tiny, literally "half off", they were all mostly rice with tiny slivers of fish and other fillings. I have been to several places in the area that are priced exactly the same that have normal sized rolls that not only have flavor, but good flavors. So I will continue going to those places instead of returning here.
This is a small neighborhood sushi joint gets the job done. Â It's super small but offers a great sampling of foods to satisfy all of your cravings. Â The offer 50% off rolls which are of decent size and have a great sampling of apps which is perfect for a quick lunch break or a relaxed break from the office. Â I have sampled quite a few of their options and have yet to be disappointed. Â Their BBQ albacore is beyond delicious, so definitely make sure to try it! Â The service is also super quick and very friendly!
Review Source:I've driven past this spot on my way home from work hundreds of times and finally got a chance to try it. Ordered the Sakura Island roll and a side salad for around $10 total. The roll consisted of crab mix, tuna, salmon, and avocado which was wrapped with a cucumber. It was cool because there was no rice and I'm trying to watch my carb intake. Flavor wise, it was only OK. It was drizzled with some sort of creamy dressing but I think it needed something citrusy to punch up the flavor. It was also clunky to eat because the cucumber slice it was wrapped in kept falling off. Side salad was OK too. Not bad, but not bomb.
Review Source:I love this little spot. it had a great atmosphere, the food was very good. i had the mount fuji. it came out very fast we started with BBQ ahi and it was so good. service was great very attentive  and we didn't have to wait for anything. i recommend it to anyone looking for a cozy little date or lunch
Review Source:In Quail Pointe Shopping Center on Sunrise and Madison.
Small casual restaurant with indoor seating (counter, sushi bar, and table seating) as well as a small outdoor seating area. This place is not suitable for parties over 4. Sure, they could put tables together but it's such a small place that the chances of getting tables together that aren't occupied is a slight chance.
Music: Somebody's R&B MP3s
With a yelp check-in, you can get a free edamame or gyoza appetizer. We opted for edamame. The edamame was super cold.
The menu is cute. When you open it up, part of it looks like a game board. Why? I don't know. The sushi we had was decent. Our server was disheveled and a little off but nice.. Didn't get our order right but nice. And the weird thing is she repeated it back to us after taking our order. But, the most off-putting thing for me is when I wiped my mouth with the paper napkin on the table and it smelled like bug spray.
Whhhyyy!
My 3rd visit here and I love the place! It's a very small place but hey, I don't care. . . . the place is clean and they have a bunch of Japanese decor to make it look nice. Service has been very prompt, nice and fast for my visits. I am a vegetarian so it's typically not hard to please me. There are only so many choices . . . most places have 2 - 4 rolls, here . . . they have 6. They are yummy BUT the prices are what totally does it for me!!! 3 rolls are $2 each, 2 rolls are $4 each and the most expensive is $5. Love it! My (Japanese) mother went with me the first time and she had the James Dean and she said it was not bad at all. She said that she would actually go back.
Great Happy Hour Special!!!! Buy 2 rolls, get 1 free!
Sushimono is your typical close-to-home mediocre sushi restaurant. There was nothing special that made this place stand out and the sushi was just okay. The spicy rolls were not spicy enough and the quality was eehh. This place is not the absolute worst but if you have a sushi craving and want to go to a place nearby your house I guess this place is okay for that.
The service was eehh as well...the one positive I will say about this place is that the rolls are 50% off. But that tells me that business may not be as good and they are doing that to attract customers. Very chill, small place and may not be good for large groups. Check it out for yourself and you'll see what I'm talking about.
Price = 5 stars
Quality = 4.5 stars
Service = 3.5 stars, depending on which waitress you get.
I love love love sushi and have visited many different restaurants. Â Sushimono has some of the best quality sushi in the area and you can't beat it for the price (1/2 off rolls since they have been open...not sure how long they will continue it). Â Good place to go with a few friends or grab an order to-go. Â The place is small though so you might want to take your large group somewhere else. Â By the way, try the veggie lover roll in addition to your fave sushi, it's amazing.
I am an avid sushi lover. Â I have relatives that work at Mikunis, but this place is a favorite. Â It has good food. Â I suggest to go with what you know is good. Â Normal combos in sushi you can never go wrong for a first time visit. Â Next time branch out with some mango topppings or lemon slices paired with smoked salmonin your sushi. Â
It's a great local spot. Â I hope they never change the discount. Â One of the main reasons I go to this place is because it's cheaper than some of the restuarants in the area. Â I think a roll from here is cheaper than a meal from Panera and more filling. Â Unfortunately, there is no bar, but they offer beer and sake with your meal.
The setting is pretty small and crowded during the peak hours of the day. Â I suggest going around 8pm or later if you're looking for a casual setting to catch up with a friend over a meal. Â I've taken numerous people here and my famil;y owns a care home business, and we took our residents here for a birthday, they were very accomadating eventhough the space was limited.
The service was quick and efficient. Â The servers aren't all in your face or overly accodating, sometimes when a server is overly attentive, it gets annoying. Â If undecided the sushi chefs will gladly make recommendations based off your ingrediant preferences. Â I don't like eel and they normally have no problems switching out the eel for shrimp or crab instead.
I highly recommend this place for anyone that is looking for good food, casual setting and good conversation, without going poor. Â
Oh and the comment about the msg, there is none used there, it's oil put in the rice to make it more sticky to hold together. Â Some places use more water but that leaves a watery taste, some people use sticky rice, but it is dense and tastes a little sweet. Â Depends on the restuarant.
Me and my hubby love this place. We accidentally found it when we went for a massage across the street and what drew us in was the half off on rolls. I was a bit skeptical at first but when we went inside it was clean and the staff was really friendly and the food was great. You get great food at a good price we've been to Mikunis a few times but they are over rated and they don't have the authentic stuff this place does. It's a must go, we've been back a few times.
Review Source:We have been coming here since they opened. Tim's rolls converted my son into a sushi lover (he can't get enough of the Sunshine roll). As for the people having problems with 2nd grade math they now put the 50% off price on the menu.
We like to sit at the bar and watch them make the rolls, the kids love it! If you want a roll that tastes delicious and looks good then here you go. I noticed some people saying the rolls are to small. Â Really? I'm a big guy and one roll fills me up nicely. Â Sure I can eat 2 or 3 rolls but I like to walk out of restaurants.
If you want sushi that's as good or better that Mikunis his will be your next favorite sushi bar.
Nice place pretty , clean, 50% off menu. That's the good.
The BAD :
Asked for 2 pieces nigiri of tuna, white tuna and salmon.
After a debate from the waitress to the person making the nigiri I got two of salmon, but four pieces of white tuna. I didn't complain because it was mothers day and didn't feel like it. The nigiri did not have any wasabi on the underside of the fish. The rice had the MSG taste had me licking my lips over and over again and drinking soda.
The togo plate for  the kids was salmon teriyaki. Roast marks a plus, But they forgot to clean the fish. Is it so hard to scale salmon? You can take a hi pressure hose an the scales come off. Really??? or even a knife. not hard to do. Better places to spend your money.
I love this restaurant! It's kind of a drive but it's definitely worth it :)
It's a small place but the decor is nice and they always play nice music. The sushi chefs are so knowledgable and are super friendly. I'm sort of a food snob, but the food here is excellent. The fish taste so fresh.
Definitely will be back here soon. The 50% off everything on the menu makes the sushi experience all the more merrier.
I think the chef's here are extremely talented. I enjoyed my sushi very much. The only issue I would say is the roll list is sort of lacking and is not very big as well the prices are okay. I mean come on 20.00$s for one roll to even begin with and to think your getting half off is sort of a joke because a roll should never be that expensive unless your in a huge city or well known restaurant that serves cuisine. Â The customer service was lacking and so I would not imply that this place would ever be that expensive till the ambiance and all changes for the better.
This place would do with some nice cheery and happy people willing to serve. That is what owning a restaurant is about. Having a gift of making a meal and making it look appeasing is one thing but attitude is so much more and goes a long way.
I am giving it four stars because it was yummy, I would just suggest some steps to move up.
Have to agree with fellow Yelper Lydia K about the whole 50% off gimmick. I've noticed that other spots do this as well. I say, just price things that they should be and offer a buy-one-get-one free coupon for a limited time. It would endear me to return again knowing that I would have to pay full price.
Located in the spot of the former Carmita (sorry to see them go), there is outdoor seating which is a great addition. They are also open late and have a happy hour special after 8:00 pm, any beer is $2 if you spend $10 on food.
I ordered rainbow roll - which is not on the menu, but you can request it. I think it was $16 or so, but then you get the 50% off, so it's $8. Personally, I found it a little lacking size-wise, but the fish was fresh. I would not pay $16 for it normally though. They also have bento boxes for $16 and at $8, I found that to be a good deal. I had the pork katsu, it was a little tough and extra crispy. The tempura was okay. It is difficult to do tempura broccoli as it tends to be mushy and this was no exception.
Ambiance-wise, if you're like me and clueless about the "latest hits" you can catch up on all your Top 40 tunes here. It was nonstop and loud. There are tables throughout and a flatscreen TV, but I forgot what was on the TV.
Service was attentive and efficient. Our food was running a bit behind and they gave us a complimentary dish of edamame which was a nice touch.
I could see myself returning here and getting the bento boxes, which tend to fill you up more for the same price as a sushi roll AND you still get California roll.
I'm kinda getting tired of the gimmicky sushi discounts... This place has 50% off the entire menu which is nice but then the prices are jacked up and the rolls are on the smallish size...
I admit I might order a bit more knowing it is half price but I feel a little bit deceived by the gimmick.
One of my faves is Tokyo Express in Rocklin and his rolls are just plain inexpensive and it is a nice break from having to do the math.
On that note I did like the food. Â We ordered three rolls and the BBQ albacore. Â The sauce on the BBQ albacore was my least favorite of any BBQ I have had before. Â It was missing the kick I am used to.
The rolls were good but average. Â The fish tasted fresh so that is good.
We spent $30 for 2 cups of hot tea, 3 rolls and BBQ albacore (4 thin sliced pieces).
If I was in the area I would go back for another try but would not go out of my way for another visit.
OH and the service was very good at the lunch hour on a Saturday at the sushi bar.
So this place was recommended by my wife, after purchasing bikes at performance bike shop which I recommend we stopped by here. I tell you the food was great and the price was affordable. If you like sushi and fresh fish this is worth checking it out. I am a very picky eater trust me this place is amazing. And I recommend "Mono" and "Fire Fire" Tim and Rob both sushi chefs are incredible at what they do.
Review Source:Small location that isn't going to work for anything over a group of six, so be warned. Â The sushi was ridiculously expensive considering there was hardly any fish in my roll (which was a $16 roll). Â Maybe the rolls will become larger once the 1/2 price grand opening special is over.
This is not a traditional Japanese restaurant. Â They only have rolls with a few cooked options and one $25 sashimi plate. Â The sushi here is "fusion" so rolls include ingredients that aren't traditional including cilantro, mango, orange, basil and mozzarella cheese. Â The problem with the rolls was they have so little fish that they just taste like the specialty ingredients. Â It that wasn't flavorless enough, the wasabi lacked any heat what so ever. Â Ick. Â How did my $16 roll taste? Like cilantro and soy sauce, with a hint of roe.
The service was good, though slow. Â The waitress did take my avocado allergy very seriously and I heard her inform the sushi chef which was a huge plus and was going to make this review 3-stars. Â Unfortunately, they still managed to mildly poison me. Â I'm not very surprised since only four of the rolls didn't have avocado.
Needless to say, I won't be going back and cannot recommend this restaurant. Â Mikuni's is 3.8 miles away.
YUM!!! I literally live a hop, skip and a jump away from this venue and have been waiting for it to open for a few months now. It was everything I had hoped + more!
The building is small, but a lot of places are. The good thing is that this restaurant does not close in the middle of the day so you can go at an "odd time" and beat the crowds. Â
We started with two miso soups, and some edamame. Â The miso was delish, and the edamame was cold and crisp, just how I like it. Â For the main rolls, we split the Kamikaze, Spicy Monster and the Twin Sakura. All three were delish... they aren't DRENCHED in sauces, the fish is fresh (melts in your mouth, not rubbery at all) and the rolls don't have too much rice. Mmm.
Their prices are PHENOMENAL. Â I also got a soda, and some mochi-- they automatically take half off your bill so we walked away for under $30 before tip!! Although the prices are cheap, I recommend tipping on the full amount of the bill (before discount) because the service is impeccable, and they are prompt and very nice.
We will DEFINITELY be back, probably during Happy Hour next time to enjoy some $1
