A first rate pub - decent and interesting beers and good basic pub food.

My wife had a steak sandwich and I had their well known deep fried crispy hamburger. Both were excellent. And the onion rings that came with the burger with first rate.

There were some comments about the service, but I found the waitresses attentive and responsive.

This place is great, always get the buffalo burger!!! Awesome beer selection, to feel healthy I get the salad with the burger instead of fries, good greens too not iceberg lettuce!

My second visit to Swifty"s was every bit as good as the first. I have found the restaurant quite busy but not much of a wait as the owner and employees keep everything moving quickly. Ommegang Ale from Cooperstown is very good and there is a great selection of other brews. I have had the Fish & Chips, Pear & Walnut with Chicken Salad along with a great appetizer. I plan to make this one of my most visited restaurants.

If you are looking for ambiance this may not be the place for you but since moving here a few months ago we have made this our go-to place for Sunday lunch. I order the French dip and it is very, very good. The French fries are not the usual string fries boiled in oil. They actually taste like potatoes! The staff is very friendly. I had 3 staff members helping me pick out the "perfect" beer. I think we found our new watering hole!!!!

Went today for Lunch...The service was excellent and the inside was clean and comfortable.
Tried the reuben spring rolls...interesting...but pretty good actually. We had the basic fare...burgers, chicken tenders, steamed clams, hot turkey sandwich...All were good and cooked properly. Pretty solid place for pub fare and more.
We will definately go back sooner than later.

In a constant search for a GREAT burger, I had to check out the Buffalo Burger ($9.99) here after reading the reviews of others, and the description provided - a half-pound of beef, "cooked to your liking, breaded, deep fried until golden and crisp, and dipped in buffalo sauce," served on a toasted Kaiser roll.

I requested mine medium-rare, and I'd say it came out closer to medium-well.  I can't say that I really noticed any breading on the outside of the burger, but it did have a nice crispness to the outside of the burger.  The buffalo sauce was more like poured over the top rather than the burger being dipped in it, but that made no significant difference to me other than it's orange color looked a bit weird.  The sauce was not overly spicy and its flavor seemed to blend ok with the meat, red onions, lettuce, and roll.  Some creamy blue cheese dressing was provided on the side which I was inclined to use for dipping my Waffle Fries ($1.49 optional side) which I enjoyed because they were not greasy or salty.  While the advertised "Kaiser" roll was devoid of the curved, superficial cuts radiating from the centre outwards, I'm not going to hold that against them since the roll was quite tasty.

Overall, I'd say the burger was better than the average burger, but not enough for me to rave about.  However, other combinations offered sound enticing if they can really do a medium-rare, so I'd be willing to go back and try something like the Cowboy Burger ($9.49) with Applewood smoked bacon, BBQ sauce, 3 beer battered onion rings and melted cheddar cheese, or possibly the Tuscan Burger ($9.49) with roasted red peppers and melted mozzarella cheese, with a side of pesto mayo.

My spice-loving companion ordered the Fresh Haddock Sandwich ($8.99) with a choice of blackened, instead of broiled or fried - This sandwich was served on a similar "Kaiser" roll with a side of tartar sauce.  The blackened spices were not very spicy at all.  Very tame, less spiciness than the buffalo sauce!  But the fish was cooked properly and moist.

Ice Tea ($2) and a pint of Ubu beer ($6) rounded out our lunch.  Service outside under the tent was good, and for a warm, sunny day with a breeze it added to the enjoyment of the lunch.  I did think that it took the kitchen a bit longer to prepare our meal (30 minutes?) than I had expected based upon the number of other tables that were occupied.  But I wasn't in any hurry, and when I went inside after lunch to use the facilities, I noticed that the bar area was almost filled to capacity.  So the business based upon the outside customers alone may have been deceiving.

They serve many more things than just sandwiches and burgers.  Entrees and Pizza look good, so I'm sure we'll be back to try a few other things.  The beer selection is better than average also, as you can tell by the Ubu on draft.

Went here for a glass of wine with my girlfriend. The service was good. She was always around to offer us a new glass. There were no beer menus or lists on the tables, which was tough since they have a lot of taps! The waitress didn't know what a couple beers were either. They should educate the staff or print menus.

Great variety of taps though! I'd go back and try a few beers one day. Plus I think they had an outside section maybe. We didn't try any food this time around.

The Delmar neighborhood hangout on the Four Corners, Swifty's has two main ingredients required of a Restaurant and Pub: good beer and tasty burgers.

    Example 1:

Beer: A pint of Ommegang Three Philosophers, a strong, dark Belgian style ale from Cooperstown that pairs so well with blue cheese and french fries.  So well, that I ordered a very interesting burger.

Burger: "Swifty's Buffalo Burger" - a juicy patty deep fried to form a crispy exterior over medium rare ground beef; then topped with tingling hot sauce and served with blue cheese, tomatoes, red onions, and french fries. Amazingly decadent.

    Example 2:

Beer: Adirondack Pub and Brewery's Blackwatch IPA, a dark IPA which is a new style of craft beer that combines hoppiness and strong flavor.  What makes this beer even better is that it is brewed up in foothills of the Adirondacks in Lake George.

Burger: The Cowboy Burger - Cooked to a perfected medium rare, The Cowboy Burger is a clever concoction boasting cheddar cheese, generous slices of Applewood bacon, three large deep fried onion rings for some extra crunch and a heavy dose of delciously sweet and tangy Brook's Barbeque Sauce from Oneonta, New York.

If you want to have a sample, Swifty's offers an "IPA Sampler Paddle", four IPAs (Blackwatch, Southern Tier, Sierra Nevada Ruthless Rye) among the standouts, served on a miniature canoe paddle.  A great way to get a taste for India Pale Ale for only 6 bucks.

This location used to house the much beloved Beff's which was famous for their Ruebens and boneless wings.  Many were dissapointed (including myself) when Beff's left and Swifty's took over.

However, one bite into the plump, juicy burgers and most Delmar resident's sadness was short-lived.

It's a hit or miss at Swifty's.  The chicken wings are good but the size of the wing has changed throughout the years.  What was once a decent size wing (balk-balk) is now a very small wing (chirp).  The open face prime rib sandwich isn't appealing to the eye or the palate and the coating on the fish fry was very thick and hard.  The dining area is dirty (dead insects and dust in window sill of bay window by booth tables), and each time I used the ladies room I detected a rotten egg odor.  Did I mention the ladies room is located right next to the kitchen? (yikes)
In a nutshell, Swifty's is a bar that just happens to serve food.

One star for each of the following words:
    Deep. Fried. Buffalo. Burger.

Do you know Mr. Dave? Well, well over a year ago he published a post about this mythical creature. A burger that had been battered, deep fried, AND COOKED TO A GORGEOUS RARE TEMPERATURE, before it was slathered with a Buffalo-style sauce, topped with blue cheese dressing and tucked in between two buns.

The link to his inspirational story is below:
    <a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ridiculousfoodsociety.net%2F2010%2F06%2Fdeep-fried-burger-swiftys-in-delmar.html&s=6aff86f32338ed0f73778d1b31ec5b05dd1ac0b0984cf65e65a2a33369c7ac10" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://www.ridiculousfoo…</a>

I drooled over those pictures for months. This was not your everyday burger, and wasn't something that was to be undertaken lightly. Then one day, early in February of 2011, I got a call from All Over Albany asking me to pitch an idea for a feature called, "F Your Resolution."

Only one thing popped into my mind.

So I was finally able to justify getting one of these glorious heart-stopping things for myself and see if all the fuss was worthwhile. And I did have my doubts. Buffalo sauce is great on chicken, but could it stand up to the full flavor of a burger?

Let me tell you, it was magnificent. Immediately after eating it, I was compelled to call one of my friends to tell her just how good it was. And since then, I've become a tireless advocate for this dish, which I really must admit is a major departure from my generally simple preferences when it comes to ground beef.

If you are interested in all the lascivious details, I posted pictures and a full write up on All Over Albany.

The fact that I haven't been since is more about an epic level of restraint and a general love of life, than anything else. When I get back there again though, I will totally skip out on the Irish fries, which were lackluster homemade potato chips, and order actual French fries.

I know this phrase gets thrown around a lot, but this burger is the stuff that dreams are made of.

Very dissapointed in Swifty's.  Although the menu items are similar to the old Beff's, the quality is just not there.   For lunch we had a Reuben, which might have been better if the Russian Dressing had any flavor. I know it's a packaged product but a quality name brand dressing would have made the difference.  My companion had the grilled veggie wrap.  Grilled?  Absolutely no grill marks or grilling flavor.  The veggies were under cooked and flavorless.  The goat cheese was missing in action!.  The coleslaw while generously portioned. had absolutley no, flavor, but looked appealing.    All in all very disappointing and I don't expect to go back.  I miss Beff's!

Hey Sherlock (steven K), check your dates. Wrote my review a year and a half ago. Very possible to update a beer list and menu since then.  Was still subpar then, but good for Swifty's if they've since improved in the areas I called out.

    One thing.

If you're going to have pub fare do it right. The food is beyond subpar, almost inedible. The quality of food has gone from good (Beff's) to terrible (Swifty's). I just don't understand why Pub owners think they can charge a fair amount of money for crap food.

    - Wings terrible, over fried, not fresh.
    - Crab cakes, terrible, it's all bread, no crab, or artificial at that.
    - Prime rib sandwich, sent back, disgusting, looked like a pile of barf.
    - Steamed clams were the only thing worth buying, they have to be good, they have to be fresh - hard to screw those up.

Service is good. The girls that work there work really hard, and I always tip them well.

Swifty's, bring back quality food, please, you have a gold mine there, why charge for crap food?

1 Star until you fix the quality of your food.

I simply don't understand the previous reviews here. One states that Swifty's is "strictly pub fare - not fine dining". Another says "bar food is bar food" and also "they should put together a menu that will make it stand out from other bars".

A ceasar salad with blackened salmon or a dinner of salmon with starch and veg is way beyond bar food. So is prime rib which they have nearly every day. They also have an excellent prime rib sandwich. The above items are enough to make this restaurant "stand out". Their pizza is a thin-crusted piece of heaven; the best around. Swifty's is way more than bar food but they do a good job with that too.

A review says "while the beer selection is good it could contain a few more microbrews."
With 29 beers on tap, there is nothing to complain about. Many restaurants have few or no micros. And to their credit, they don't ruin  their beer by pouring it into chilled glasses. A true Irish pub wrapped in a full service restaurant.

I have never had a problem with the service.

    Hence, the five stars.

That said, the place has a few  problems. The tables along the back wall have a hard wooden bench for seats on one side. Very uncomfortable.

The back door near the parking lot leads to a foyer which leads to the bar. An inner door leads to the dining room. This door should be closed in cold weather so that the foyer can act as a buffer but the waitstaff must go through the foyer to deliver food to the tables in the bar area. So this door is kept open and this allows cold air into the dining room whenever the back door is opened.   The front door which faces the street opens directly into the bar area and should not be used in cold weather. The previous owner did not allow this door to be used.  This door allows a blast of cold air into the bar and bar tables in cold weather.

For me this is a deal breaker. Therefore I avoid Swifty's in cold weather which in Delmar is more than half the year.

Second chance review; I have decided the food at Swifty's is something special, the pizza is nice and my husband loves the burgers. However, the staff needs an attitude adjustment. I read other reviews about a rude hostess, and that is no joke. The most surly teenager I have ever encountered (and I have two!). To her defense, it was a busy night. The bartender is a younger girl who was, once again, more intent on serving some "regulars" than new customers like myself. Service in the dining room was great, as well as the food. I would love to become a regular here to receive better service!

The expectation for Swifty's Pub is more pub than swift.  The pub fare is pretty good; burgers, sandwiches, and fries all above board for a pub but make no mistake, it is a pub and not fine dining.  One shining spot is their salad selection.  They are always fresh and crisp, something that can be rare, especially at a pub.  This is all similar to the previous setup, Beff's.

One thing that Beff's had over Swifty's is the service.  I have yet to go to Swifty's when the check didn't take forever to make it to the table.  More annoyingly, whenever we order take out, it is ALWAYS wrong: fries instead of chips, missing or wrong salad dressings, no cheese when it was requested, etc...  The mistakes are never huge but just annoying and frequent enough that we won't be ordering take out there again.

Finally, since becoming Swifty's, the layout of the place has changed quite a bit.  The men's room was moved out of the bar area, opening up the space and making it seem less clastrophobic.  The dining room is slightly smaller but that isn't the issue.  A half wall was erected through the center of the room which divides the space and makes the window side seem small and the windowless side seem dark.  This was a big mistake in my opinion.  Also, a large tent was built outside and is a great place to eat on a nice summer night; this was an excellent addition.

In summary, the food is pretty good for a pub but only go if you have time to kill and never order take out.

Swifty's is pretty much indistinguishable from what it was before changing hands: Beff's.

    And that's good thing.

With a big menu of pub fare and dozens of beers on tap, it's certainly better choice than Chili's or Applebee's. We went there the other night under the big tent, ordering big, hearty sandwiches. Overall, very satisfying, relatively cheap, and very casual.

We called ahead as it was getting late and it was Easter Sunday.  We had tried a few other options but all we closing or closed.  So we went to Swifty's.   We arrived by 745 the time the person on the phone said we should in order to be sure we could get what we wanted as the kitchen closed at 8.   She got us seated no problem got us menus and encouraged (not pushy just urgent) us to order as the kitchen was closing.  We ordered beers they came quick, we ordered food it came quick.  It was great!  I had a cheddar burger, others had black and blu burger, and a quesadilla.   The burgers we cooked spot on and tasted great which is a good thing on a Sunday late in service.  The quesadilla was nice with fresh veg, again great for a late Sunday.
The structural impovements done are perfect.  The added privacy and opened up space was done well and the whole place looks better and more put together.
This was my first visit.  I will try it again and rest assured deliver and honest review.

Beff's of Delmar was recently sold a few months ago and it's now Swifty's Restaurant & Pub, named after the owner.

This location at the Four Corners of Delmar brings back old memories for me since the last time I was here was over the summer of 1998 when it was Beff's. Back then, I worked around the corner and my coworkers and I would go out to lunch here each Friday sitting under the open air tent enjoying beers and burgers. The food at Beff's was decent. My current job in NH does not allow alcohol consumption during work hours. I miss the good ol' days!

Present (2009), the big white open air tent still remains next to the restaurant with the same patio seating. Some lined shrubs separate the tent dining area from the Delaware Avenue sidewalk.

I arrive at Swifty's after 5PM on a warm Saturday evening and decided to be seated under the tent for old times sake. There's a hostess station at the tent and I was seated quickly since the place was not mobbed, yet. The menu offers American/Irish pub fare including starters, burgers, sandwiches, pizza, dinner entrees, kids menu, and desserts. Some entrees on the menu include bangers & mash, seafood creole, prime rib, chicken parmesan, and grilled salmon. The prices are moderate. See the menu offerings and prices at <a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Fswiftyspub.com&s=2263f2f38d65a2629c17cd90f8c329c34fe234f77ef767db64cde9e8ac220324" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://swiftyspub.com</a>

The bar has 29 beers on tap including Guinness, Sam Adams, Smithwick's, Yuengling Lager, Coors Light, Magic Hat, Bass, Blue Moon, Spaten, Brooklyn Lager, Anchor Steam, Heineken, and others.

Okay, my waitress comes over after I'm seated and I'm actually all set to order. I saw that the next table had ordered the Irish Nachos, which was loaded  and HUGE! I think I'll get something smaller and order a Basket of Irish Chips ($3.49). 5 minutes later, WRONG!!! The basket of warm fresh cut crispy potato chips was HUGE, served with a side of BBQ sauce for dipping. I could not finish this by myself and had most of it boxed later on.

For dinner, the Swifty's Reuben ($8.49) served with a light macaroni salad & pickle spear was excellent. This grilled sandwich had thin sliced tender corned beef, kraut, cheese, Russian dressing, and cole slaw on rye. The place began to get really busy and every table became filled up. My waitress had more tables to handle and was busy, so when I was finished, the hostess walked over, cleared my dishes, and boxed up the remaining food. The hostess returned with the boxed food and a dessert menu.

For dessert, I was trying to decide between the Bread Pudding or Apple Tart. My waitress recommended the Bread Pudding ($4.99). It took about 10 minutes for the bread pudding to arrive which was brought out by another waitress. The bread pudding was served very hot, soft with melted butter (was that the vanilla sauce stated in the menu????) and topped with whipped cream. As a result, the taste was not sweet like many other bread puddings I've had. A sweet vanilla sauce would've made the pudding stand out.

Overall, I enjoyed my dinner under the open air "big top" almost like having a meal 11 years ago with the old crew when I was a young professional just out of school. The food was very good (appetizer & entree) and the bread pudding was decent. The service was spot on and efficient despite the busy crowds. The hostess and the waitresses worked as a team. I only wished more restaurants would train their staff this way. Overall, 4.5 stars.
