Could've, should've been better.  No really, I remember several years back really enjoying this place.  The food now is terrible, the ribs were bones with burnt barbecue sauce on them.  The chicken was thin, a little chewy smothered in barbecue sauce.  I've tasted better cardboard then this bread!  The service was, well a little creepy, the bus boy/host handled the top of the glasses with his noticeably dirty fingers (maybe it was dried on barbecue sauce!)  The waitress however was fun, friendly, efficient and competent.  However when we had to request some meat on the bones (I've given my dog meatier bones) or a replacement dinner we could hear the very loud verbal abuse from the kitchen and worried considerably about even eating the replacement dinner.  We should've been treated better-any other restaurant would've been interested in pleasing the customer, comp, free desert something we spent over $60 (I would've rather donated the money to a charity).  We were far too polite to confront the management but had to warn, okay vent because they are giving local eateries a bad name.  Local should be better right?  I really challenge management to step up to the plate and work on these issues.

Went to the Tack Room last Friday for my birthday.  Had seen a write up on it in the newspaper that raved about it - whoever wrote that has no taste buds.  My steak (ribeye) was cooked rare as I had requested, but over half of it was inedible gristle and tough meat.  Told the waitress about it and she said "Oh", took the plate and walked away.  Was expecting some sort of credit on the bill, but got charged the full price!  Never going there again --

We just had a absolutely excellent meal to celebrate my parents birthdays. The service was prompt and friendly.  Mom and Dad were given their choice of dessert. The raspberry cheesecake was outstanding as was the chocolate moose cake. I would definitely recommend this place as we were told about it by a friend today.

After 20+ years living here, I finally made it to the Tack Room.
The place is small and funky but...
I really enjoyed sitting in a booth, having a good Zin, a tasty salad with all the "stuff" I enjoy on it, and a delicious NY Steak cooked perfectly.
It turned out to be a fun date and a relaxing evening!  The caring service
    added to it for sure.

Interesting place.  Sort of a rustic country bar look with an open BBQ pit in the middle of the dining area.  Had a new york steak and it was pretty good, cooked perfect, good flavor.  Salad bar was decent too.  Shrimp was overpriced for what you got and wasnt that tasty.  Mine had the vein left in so booo for that, doesnt take much to clean those when you butterfly them.

It does get pretty cold in there at night, they need to invest in a heater.

Here is my honest review of the famous Tack Room.  This place has been around for many years and it is all about the locals.  I really mean it.... Locals!  This is a good thing and a bad thing.  There are two areas to consider here, one the bar, the other the restaurant.   Let me break it down.

Bar.........  Old people serve the bar, only beer and wine, but they have other drinks there... just that know one knows how to make them.  Get some fresh people in there and this place would really be good.  Treat all people as local and equal... for now.. I give a 2 stars .

Restaurant....... Each time I come to the restaurant I love watching my steak being cooked on the open fire pit in the dining room. You can stand there, talk , ask dictate how you like your meat cooked.  This is great to me, to have that much control in your food and not be at home.  I love this concept.

I really enjoy this place but have had some issues on the bar side.... Ummmm NO my Yelp friends you need to use my secret yelp mobile personal phone to talk about that.

But.....This place is not perfect.   I do like it.   I want to make it better.. so here is what I suggest.  Lets visit this place as Yelpers.. also make sure that the owners know we are looking .... And make this place better..............

After all... this is our main purpose for yelp.   We do this to make commerce better in our own community.     Sorry for the Yelp crusade.. I am not running for Yelp president....   Not YET anyway LOL.

This place has sometimes been inconsistent, but the bar is a great slice of life, and the steaks are grilled well. They're served with one of those bizarre red-soaked baked apple slice garnishes though, like a little time machine straight back to the 70s. The salad bar is firmly in the past as well - and a word to the wise, steer clear of the sunflower seeds and opt for croutons if you're looking for some crunch on your salad, the seeds are... well-aged, if you catch my drift. But the NY steak is good, the pork chops are good, and in contrast to others who have posted reviews here, I've never had a major issue with the service. There was that one memorable night when I ordered my steak medium and it came out mooing... but they took it back and when it was returned it was cooked perfectly. We've lived near this place for 13 years and been there to eat at least 8-10 times. Is it fine dining? No, but it's a reasonably priced and fairly reliable local joint for dinner. One last hint: corkage is only $3, so bring your own wine!

Being that the Tack Room is the only option other than a cafe we went there for my grandma's birthday.

First of all, it was super cold, I was looking forward to getting there to feel the warmth of being inside, WRONG!  Part of dining out is the comfort and atmosphere provided by the restaurant, not here!! It was so cold inside I couldn't even sit still.  I could see how the staff who grills everything right in front of you would frown on using the heater since you could see they were not concerned about it being too cold.  So I sat there and renamed it the Tacky Room!

I started off with the soup of the day, (apparently vegetable soup is the soup of every day)  hoping for warmth.  It was blah and didn't even serve it's purpose!

The bread was cold, service was SOOO slow and there was nothing that made me say wow!  All their meat was frozen you could hear it when it was placed on the counter, so there was nothing fresh here.

There is a bar next door that plays live music,  I didn't experience it, I just heard about it.

Next time I am suggesting we make the drive to Grass Valley!

Granted the bartenders and restaurant staff were friendly, it doesn't compensate for mediorcre food and service.  Of our three meals, two were the daily specials, and both meals were served with rice that was actually colder than room temperature. The entrees were OK, at best. Service was slow and spotty, even though there were less than 10 customers in the restaurant.   At the bar, the biggest complaint is that they practice the "chum" for tips routine by deliberately giving you a pile of one dollar bills as change, such as a 5 and five ones, instead of a 10.

In all honesty I've been to the Tack Room bar more than the restaurant. I love the bartenders there. Even though people in Penn Valley don't normally enjoy "city people" they've always been nice to us!

What I love about the restaurant is the flame grill in the middle where you can watch your dinner being cooked! It's usually pretty packed so expect a wait!
