I no longer live in San Marcos as I have been out of college for a few years now but I will still venture from Austin back to my old stomping grounds for one of their Queso Burgers. SOOOO GOOD!!! I am not even bothered by the mess that this burger will make of your hands, it's so damn good. I am also a huge fan of their draft beer selection. There are bar/pubs in Austin that cannot match the variety I see when I go there. I hope this place never goes out of business because I am going to keep coming back no matter where I reside.

Neat little gem in the "heart" of San Marcos.  I stayed in SM during the MotoGP at Circuit of the Americas event in April of 2013, and had seen and heard decent things about this place, and it only made sense to check it out one evening.  Onwards:

    Location: 4 out of 5
I would consider the location to be in the trendy and hip part of SM with other restaurants and boutique shops around.  It's on Hopkins between LBJ and Guadeloupe, but the entrance is actually on the backside of the building.  I believe that the parking lot in the back is for patrons, but when I went, it was full.  I did not have any problems finding street parking on Guadeloupe though, by the large square grassy area with the building with the rotunda.  Geez, I hope that description makes sense.

Customer Service: 4 out of 5
Nice and relaxed atmosphere upon entering, with the "maitre d" seating us quickly at a high topper and making small talk with us.  The waitress that helped us was cheerful and friendly, and quick to refill our waters/teas and was quite adept at estimating when we would need our next beers.  She was especially patient in explaining their eating challenge to us, called the Chupacapra.  More on this a little later.  She was also very efficient - able to take multiple orders from from multiple tables at once, and do things in a manner that saved on time, resources, and her own energy.

Selection of beer:  5 out of 5
I might be a little bit biased on this, as I am a fan of trying local and regional beers.  Being from Chicago, I was delighted to see the requisite number of Austin-based beers (like products from 512), and Texas based beers (Real Ale) that are harder to find, or impossible to find, in Chicago.  Sure, they also had beers on taps that I see regularly (Sierra Nevada, Blue Moon, Guiness, Leinie's, etc.) but as they say - when in Rome, right?  Aside from one of the local beers, I did try one of their beer flights that are geographically based.  I think I had the one that was called "a taste of Munich" or something like that with four different German beer styles.  They also seemed to have a good number of ciders and lambics on tap, which make for creative beer/cider blends.

Selection of food: 4.5 out of 5
Comfortable pub food, with a twist on a a few favorites.  It was the type of food that you'd want to see at a taproom, ranging from fried pickles to jalapeno poppers to burgers, sandwiches, salads, ribs, and fried seafood.  None of it pretentious or what I would consider to be "haute cuisine", but all of it familiar.  The variations of burgers they had was awesome, and of course I had to go for the "hell burger".  Remember when I mentioned their challenge, the chupacabra?  It consists of:  a full rack of ribs, ten "nuclear" chicken wings, a full side of fries, a full side of onion rings, and a one-pound burger, complete with every topping.  So. much. food.  Talking to the waitress, she mentioned that 1 person ever has been able to finish it, but just not in the allotted time of one hour.  Yikes.

    Decor: 4 out of 5
Forgettable interior but for the little assortment of trinkets they had above the bar, which ranged from a buddha statue to creole voodoo artifacts to little model cars to well, just about everything else.  The actual bar and seating area reminded me of many pubs and taprooms that I've gone to before with the wood trim, wooden tables, etc.

Value for the money: 4 out of 5
Look  - this place is a great value.  The burger that I had was excellent and about 10 bucks, the beers were reasonably priced, and the atmosphere inside a late lunch was relaxed and pleasant.

    Overall: 4 out of 5
I had a decidedly pleasant time at the Tap Room.  As a reminder to those who may be coming from Chicago, smoking is allowed in restaurants and bars.  This is not a dig against people who smoke, it's just an "Oh yeah...forgot about that" type point.  As such, dress and plan accordingly.

After looking for apartments I was recommended by the leasing manager to check out Tap Room.

It's a little difficult to find for the first time customer, but after asking 2 guys walking on the street they walked me down a back street and around a building.

The door guy was a bit intimidating, when we asked simple questions about how many beers on tap and small talk about the Tap Room. It just wasn't the warmest welcoming & he acted if he didn't want us there...

HOWEVER once inside we found a place at the bar and we were quickly greeted by the bartender. Our service was quick and bartenders were friendly & attentive.

Our food was delicious. I'll go ahead and say it's the best burger I've had in ALONG time.

Only negatives besides the door way is the cigarette smoke & the thick layer of dust on all the nicknacks, statues and bottles littering the top of the walls/ceiling. It needs a good deep cleaning.

If you're in San Marcos and in the mood for a laid back atmosphere, watching sports and a good burger i'd recommend Tap Room! Cheers!!

I came here with a bunch of friends on a Friday night and loved the atmosphere for the place. The tables were packed and it was first come first serve, but the waiters were very helpful in helping us find a table. The beer options were great. I didn't get a chance to eat the food since I was stuffed from dinner before, but my friends got to try a burger and loved it. Great hang out to watch games or come for a few drinks on the weekend.

Taproom, I love you. You already have 100 great reviews and you don't need one more, but here it is.

Seriously, excellent service, every waitress is so, so nice and they have the best burgers I have ever drunkenly stuffed in my mouth. I don't even LIKE burgers but I like Taproom burgers. I wouldn't change a thing. Except your queso, seriously you're better than that, get some better queso.

5 stars, if I could give you 6, I would.

As a relatively new San Marcosian, I haven't found a whole heck of a lot of places that I like, which I think makes me like Tap Room even more.

Cheap drinks, cheap (and delicious) food and a nice dark, dank space. What more can I ask for?

Yes, admittedly, you do leave smelling like you smoked a pack if you come when it's busy but sit in the backroom or visit outside of the rush and you'll be dandy.

Burgers are the best I've had in the area with an addictively sweet and delicious bun. Great appetizers. Honestly, haven't ordered a thing I didn't love! I find myself craving the chicken bacon ranch pita.

This is one of my favorite spots to hit after a nice long day's work, have an oversize pint (at a regular size price!) and a good eat.

There is nothing that I can say that would describe how freaking amazing the burgers are. I am a connoisseur of sorts, traveling far and wide to satisfy my burger cravings, and I still have yet to find anything to compare. Myself, and all of our friends, simply crave it and it's a "must have" when we visit San Marcos.

Yes, it is quite smokey. That would be the pitfall. Go early and it isn't an issue. :)

I like Tap Room. I am lactose intolerant so it sucks to eat burgers without cheese, but the burgers really are VERY good. I don't know about beer as, believe it or not even though I'm German I do NOT like beer o.o haha.

    The only three things are:

    1) it can be smokey (don't wear your best clothes). I know it's San Marcos, so you can smoke inside, but if you're not local, just keep that in mind.

2)It can be REALLY loud. If you want to go and just have a quiet romantic evening--haha--don't go to Tap Room! Go if you want to have fun and chill and drink some beer if you want.

    3) Service can take a lonnnnnnnnnng time. We usually just ask for the checks the moment we get our food. Because if we don't, the waitresses tend to ...disappear. They're all really nice, but they do tend to take forever.

Awful pub food, but the beer selection is one of the better ones for San Marcos.  I probably won't return, because smoking is allowed inside and the smell is quite terrible.  It is dark and cavernous and just not up to par.

I'll never understand why so many people gush over this place. I've been three times and never felt like I had a great experience. The only redeeming quality it has and reason it isn't a one-star is because of the great beer selection.

If you just want a place with a wide variety of beers on tap then this is the perfect place, but I've tried the famous queso burger twice and have never thought it was anything special.

The burgers taste like they come from frozen, pre-packaged patties. It's the same quality of product that I can get at a fast food chain, so why wouldn't I save the time and money and just hit up the local drive-thru.

Along with the average food I felt like I've had poor service the two times I've gone in there for lunch. They usually have maybe two waitresses serving a couple dozen tables. Once the order gets in the food comes out at a normal time, but having a waitress check on you after receiving your food or drop a check could take quite a while.

If I go again I'll be sure to sit at the bar and only order drinks.

Pretty good burgers! Beer selection was not as good as had been rumoured. Smelled like your usual old stale cigarettes mixed with spirits. My waitress was incredibly busy, but still attentive, talkative, and nice. Went during the Olympics, and every TV had a different sport on. That was refreshing. I'll have to check it out again during football season. Gotta see if it's a place to drink and watch my Saints!

Bad part: I couldn't get out my head how dusty the place probably was around the ceiling area. So many things up there, made me a little nervous. :(

It's pretty hard to find, you have to walk down the alley beside the coffee shop, then turn right.

Woodchuck Cider on tap is always awesome.  I'd pay the whole $5 for it.  I was a little bummed that the place is nonsmoking before 3:00 pm.  I am also irritated with the way the bartender/manager/waiter/whoever he was told me, which was by snatching up the ashtray. No snatching!
I ordered the fish and chips. Delicious.

I'd eat there again if asked.

As far as the menu is concerned: all I am going to say is, "queso burger". You can thank me later.

The beer is always good too. I've been through three cards.

How come I never made it here when I lived in San Marcos?! Yeah, I don't have a damn clue either. It's a classic and will hopefully stick around a long time.

Thus far the burgers here are some of the best that I've had. I'm no expert burger fan, in fact I didn't even enjoy burgers for a long time because they were not that great at most places.

This time I split a mushroom-swiss burger (late afternoon snack) and a raw veggie basket. I'm a big fan of mushroom-swiss burgers but not many stand out. Funny enough, Chili's also has a pretty awesome one. It was de-lish! Flavorful with plenty of mushrooms and cheese. Yummm...dammit now I'm hungry.

It was also nice that we could order an appetizer that wasn't fried. Amazing right! Not only that it was actually something nice and healthy at a place where you'd least expect it. The raw veggie basket with ranch was a good size, plus I love the ranch dressing here!

This place has been around a long time though, and unfortunately it shows a bit. It's not dirty but there's a high ceiling with tons of old taps and bottles that could use a bit of dusting (read 'spring cleaning').

I've been coming to this place since I moved to Texas in 2007 and since I've been going for so long, I figure it's time to finally bite the bullet and write my review. There are several things I love about this place, and a few things I dislike but let's start with the positive then work from there.

Great beer selection. The thing the Tap Room is known for, they tend to not disappoint in this arena. From local breweries to international brew houses, a good mix of fine ales and lagers can be found within their walls. Sometimes they will replace a good beer (let's say a Smithwicks) with a new entry, that sucks, but the constant introduction of new beers does nothing but help the establishment build upon its lore and keep the palets of San Marcos refreshed. One of the great things about the Tap Room is their beer card. It has a spot for every beer and as you consume one, the waitress will check it off your list. When you complete the card, you get your name put on the wall as well as your very own Tap Room t-shirt. It's a great challenge, and one I hope to complete before my time in San Marcos comes to an end!

Another thing going for the Tap Room is their food. The burgers.....amazing. The bread they use is so sweet and perfect, it really makes the burger. They also offer tiny diced grilled onions that are just perfect. All veggies besides the onions come on the side, and you generally get a healthy portion of french fries or onion rings with any order. I've heard the ribs are also spectacular but I've yet to try them as the burgers are so good, I get one every time.

The Tap Room also runs specials daily from 3-8 that range from half price appetizers to buy a burger/get a free beer. They are a great value depending on which day you go, I implore you check out their specials board and find a day that's right for you!

The Tap Room is one of those bars that just has a great atmosphere. It's dimly lit, it has wood from the floor to the ceiling and decor that could remind you of something out of the Temple Bar district in Dublin, Ireland. I love hanging out in this place. It can get crowded but there are plenty of seating options that make this a small issue if any.

The one downside to the taproom is their service tends to be a little slow. Not that the staff is bad, it's far from that, they just tend to be understaffed. Typically, they have two waitresses on the floor, which tends to over extend them a little. Seeing your waitress can be few and far between at times so bring a loud voice, you may need one to summon your assistance to the table. The food tends to take a little while to pop out as well. I don't know if they want you to suck down plenty of beers while you wait or because they have a limited kitchen staff but if you do decide to order food, be prepared to wait a little bit for it.

Overall, this is a pretty decent establishment. Great drinks and great food make for a great combo. If they would hire on a little more staff and speed up their service, they would definitely be a lock for 5/5. If you're in San Marcos, pop into the Tap Room and have yourself an adult beverage, maybe even grab a bite to eat, the chances of you being disappointed are highly unlikely!

I've lived here since Summer 2011 and the Tap Room has definitely become a regular place for us.

Great bar food. Burgers are always a standard go-to. Juicy and tasty, but not greasy. We also get the chicken wings with spicy garlic sauce from time to time. The fries are particularly good as well. Everything else is also up to par from appetizers to other sandwiches. Can't really go wrong with food at the tap room.

The beer selection at the Tap Room is another thing to take into consideration. Whether you're looking to to experiment with a different kind of brew, or are looking for your beer of choice, the Tap Room has it. Look into becoming a member of the "Around the World" Club.  If you can finish all 60 draft, bottled, and beer blends Tap Room has to offer you will become a member of their World Traveler Club. If you complete the tour you receive a free T-shirt displaying your achievement plus your name and your favorite quote will be added to their wall of fame. I'm up to 22. Fun!

ALSO, Geeks Who Drink is a trivia night hosted at the Tap Room on Tuesday nights. Ten rounds of trivia with small prizes and free pints for correct answers. Don't mess with the geeks on trivia night. Kidding. Trivia night is definitely recommended.

Service is great. Even when it's crowded, we never have a problem.

    TV's aren't really intrusive. It's a bar.

Yeah, you may smell like smoke. It's a bar.

    Love the place.

I went to school at Texas State. For any special occasion, including selling my books back to the school, the Tap Room was my "special occasion place." If you think that's funny, you never lived in San Marcos.   Tap Room is the bees knees in this town.

The queso burger still makes me salivate every time I think about it. Think about some of the most delicious queso you've ever tasted.  Not that crap you heat in your microwave at home.  Then think about that on a perfectly cooked burger patty on some of the best buns beef has ever laid on. Mix that in with one of their fantastically delicious brews on tap. Side note:  if you order anything lite you suck. Go to some fratty bar down the street to get your Keystone or Natty Lite:

The queso burger, I maintain is still the best burger I have ever had. Also good:

    Chicken wings
    Hell burger
    Chips and Queso
    Big screen TVs everywhere

People complain about how dark this place is inside. Who cares. They don't have windows in there. The food is good and so is the beer. Get the Queso Burger!

My wife and I are going soon. She wants me to shut up about this place.

I just recently went to Tap Room for the first time a few months ago (when I finally turned 21 since you have to be above 21 to get in there after 5pm) and absolutely loved my burger.

Queso.Guacemole.Burger is the messiest thing you could imagine so DON'T order it on a date but its oh so delicious and now something that I constantly crave. Their crinkle wedge fries are pretty delicious as well!

If the ambiance matched the quality of the burger, it would be close to 5 stars but the darkness and smokiness of the restaurant really makes it not the best place because you will come out smelling of smoke.

I also had a bad experience with my waitress. She rushed the group of people I was with to order as soon as we sat down then when we finished she came by and picked up the baskets and dropped off the bill. We had wanted to sit around and have another drink or two but decided to go ahead and pay it. While we finished our beers, she came up and asked us to leave as soon as we were done because people were waiting for tables. It was awkward and rude (she didn't even say please!!!), but we stood up and walked out. Minus another star there... Sorry Tap Room!

It feels very dark inside, especially if you've been out on a sunny day. But the selection of beers on tap is great, and they have a whole roster of beer mixes that I had never imagined.

My only issue with this place is that they will not honor requests to have your burger cooked medium-rare. We were warned of this by our waitress, but pleaded with her to try to get the cooks to make it to our liking. Sadly, they came out medium-well. It's unfortunate because they obviously try to use better ingredients, and use good technique to make their buttery crispy crinkle-cut wedge fries, and very good onion rings. While the burgers were pretty good, they really would have been great if cooked to a juicy medium-rare. If you take your burgers seriously, which The Tap Room claims to do, it is a bit ridiculous to be presented with overcooked patties even after a lot of pleading. Sigh.

Be warned that it is a smoking establishment. I don't mind cigarettes, but don't really like my clothes reeking of them.

Ok, the food here is amazing, service is fun as well.  Had an amazing burger.

Would give 5 stars for above, but the smoke knocks it down.  But would go back again and again to get a taste of that burger.

I recently went to The Tap Room on a Wednesday night and I will definitely keep it in mind the next time I want a cold beer and some greasy pub food. The music was kinda loud and our friends told us that on the weekends it is standing room only. Our server was really nice, though she did insult my boyfriend for asking for a Coors. (Kiss my ass beer snobs of the universe.)
Regardless, I really like the place, our food was hot, and I am excited to take on their beer challenge of having a 22 oz glass of all the beers on tap (about 60).

Cool, local spot to hit up after a long day on the river. Good greasy burger selection and plenty of beers...although that's probably less exciting after you've been chugging beer for 5 hours.

Anyway, service was slow and the place was a little smokey but the burger really hit the spot.  They also have delicious onion rings and the ability to split checks - WIN.

    Yes, yes, yes!

    Burgers - check!
    Beer - check!
    Fried Mushrooms - check!

Some friends and I stopped in here for a quick lunch before some minor shopping and a night out in Austin. It's right next to Texas State so I'm sure they stay pretty busy usually, but at lunch time most of the college kiddies are still in bed. Lucky for us!

No wait for a table and awesome service. We all ordered burgers with a variety of appetizers and everything came out perfect. My burger totally hit the spot after a night of drinking on 6th and the fried mushrooms were perfect. Now, this is not fine dining but I could care less! A good burger is just about all I need sometimes!

I've only gone to this place for trivia night so I can't say much about their food.

I will say that trivia is a lot of fun here and there's always a big crowd for it so get there early and grab a seat! If you place in the top 3 for trivia, they will give you a gift certificate. It's not much but enough to cover a few appetizers.

As far as appetizers go, it's your standard bar food. I will say that their queso is good. I haven't tried any of their burgers, but my friends seem to like them.

This is a good place for trivia. I don't think I'd ever suggest this as a place to go for a sit down dinner. It's loud, dark, and very smokey in there. People are smoking cigarettes left and right and right again and I honestly would be pissed if someone took me out to dinner and I had to sit around that.

This is one of those places where you have to brace yourself first before going. It has to be one of those nights where you're in the mood to be surrounded by really loud people, stalk people to get their tables when they leave, and smell like 1,000 cigarettes when you get home. It's not for everyday, but once in awhile isn't bad.

It happened, Yelp. I found what I think is my favorite burger in Texas. This is quite the way to ring in the celebration of new employment!

I had no designs on visiting The Tap Room; in fact, I'd never even heard of it. I received a telephone call from a San Antonio friend who wanted to meet half way for drinky times. Upon arrival, I was a little nervous. It has the presence of a divey college joint, but what they serve up is oh so special.

Hello, Chimay Blue. It's been far too long! The pièce de résistance was by far "The Works" burger. Handmade patties with sautéed mushrooms,  jalapeños, onions, and bacon on a potato bun. Need I say more? I substituted American cheese for pepper jack and I think this was a great decision. The fries were not the best I've ever had, but they were very good.  The service was adequate. I'll add in that this is a smoking establishment (I'd forgotten that those still exist!) so heads up if that's a deal breaker.

All in all, this place provided a great experience. I'm always on the hunt for a great burger. It's a pretty big honor to bestow, but they kicked the ass of any burger that Austin has served up to me to thus far.

Let's start with the good things because it is raining and I am feeling optimistic today.  The burgers are good, not great, not spectacular, but a solid burger that will fill your stomach provided proper mastication preceded the shoving of it down your throat.  The jalapeno burger (can't remember the name) with jack cheese is the way to go.  Sufficient heat to tint your earlobes red, but not so much that it flushes your face (giving you that embarrassed look you don't need after accidentally [out of the tiniest corner of your eye] seeing a thong on some co-ed).  The fries are tasty if not the slightest bit bland, and they have to be ordered separately.

The best thing about the tap room is the beer selection.  It is broad (vast like the great Siberian forests of the Motherland) enough to make you ponder for a good 5 minutes, whilst annoying the bartender with your inability to make a decision.  Lucky for him there are abundant thongs to peruse while the indecisive consider their next beer.

Having lived in Austin a while I have become used to the smoking ban.  As such, I can't stand the smell of this place, and if you are unlucky enough to grab one of the few seats left that is next to cigar guy you can kiss tasting anything other than ash the rest of the night.  Which brings me to the second negative.  It is always crowded.  It is always I-took-15-minutes-to-park-this-enormous-truck-somewhere-close-and-now-I-have-to-sit-next-to-cigar-dickbro-crowded.

Bring a book to read because people look at you funny when you are *gasp* reading.

    Thongs.

Just to clarify my name is on the wall. I did drink all the beers. Took me a long time but i did it.

For me the Tap Room is the best dark loungy pub grub place a guy could dream of. They have a huge list of beers from around the world and most of them are on tap. The burgers are huge and could easily be halfed with your date. Unless your eating with a dude in which case you should man up whimp and get the hell burger.

My go to beer:  Rio Blanco (local fav).
My fav beer: Chimay Blue but its a meal in a bottle and should be saved for special times.
My hated beer: Something like FoSchnitzel and its served with a slice of lemon.

Have Fun and live long Tap Room.

    Fire (Uh) [Uh]
Fire (It's all about) [Uh, uh]
    Fire (Woo, woo, woo)
    Fire

I ate the HELL Burger at the Tap Room today for lunch with a few close friends.

(HELL, they were my close friends when we started.)

Think a 1/2 pound patty, two slices of jalapeno-jack cheese, covered in grilled onions, jalapenos and Tap Room's own hot wing sauce.  Then I added Tabasco sauce because I like to turn up the HELL fires.  Oh, and rings.  Deeeeeelicious onion rings.

(Flames shooting from mouth.  Ahh, just right.  Check?  HELL, they're still my friends.)

The burgers are terrific, famous, and are so very worth coming here for.  HELL YES!  +5 stars.

Waiting an hour for our food while other tables were seated, served, and got the HELL out of there before we even got our food?  HELL NO!.  -1 star

Leaving Tap Room reeking of the smoke from HELL because the air purifier has been doing a HELLuva job for years?  HELL NO!  -1 star.

Will I be back?  Sure.  I want to go through HELL again.  Maybe this trip can be at the end of the day, so I won't have to go back to HELL.  Then, sure as HELL, I can have a beer or two and see more stars.

    Now THAT would be...HEAVEN.

I'm updating my previous review. These are not the best hamburgers in San Marcos...

...they are the best hamburgers in the WORLD! The secret is in the potato bread buns, but it doesn't stop there. They put a secret ingredient in the meat that makes you go gaga with each bite.

I have no intentions of eating any hamburger at some mediocre place after indulging on one of these masterpieces. I'd even take flights to San Marcos just to go to the Tap Room (if I had the money).

Don't forget to order a Sexual Chocolate.

The Good: Burgers are large and delicious, with a variety of interesting taste variations. (The Hell Burger is my favorite!) The rolls on which they're served are sweet and yeasty, and are a key part of the experience. Their fries are well-seasoned, wedge cut delights, properly cooked at high temperatures so they're crispy without excess oil. The cheesesteaks are also very tasty. And, of course, the biggest selection of beers in San Marcos is a big plus. The servers are friendly and attentive.

The Bad: Nearly always quite noisy, often somewhat smoky. Much of the seating is stools with no backs, which can get uncomfortable after a bit. But if you're a fan of burgers or beer, these caveats are far outweighed by the good aspects of the place.

Upside: great burgers and other fried fare, and good selection of beers.

    Downside: Small, crowded.

OOoo Tap Room!! How I miss you!!!!!

I attended school at SWT, now known as TxState...but not to me.  This weekend I and a group of other former Bobcats were returning from a trip to San Antonio and decided to stop and grab a bite...just for old time's sake.

I think we all cried a little when we bit into our burgers. We had almost forgotten how good the Tap Room is.

The buns are what make the burgers. They taste like sweet hawaiin bread rolls. Which is a great contrast to the saltiness of the queso burger.  The wedge fries are pretty salty too...but I think this is all in an effort to make you order another drink!

Speaking of drinks, the Tap Room has over 50 beers on tap. Very similar to the Flying Saucer in that if you have a certain amount of different beers, you get a plaque with your name and quote thrown on the wall.
But the prices and food here is better.
But it's not just beer, you can also get liquor as well. I suggest a Scooby Snack. Cannot remember off the top of my head what's in it, but it's quite tasty!!

Few things to keep in mind when going to the Tap Room:
Parking- Be very careful and very aware of your parking spot. If there is a "will tow" sign around...you will get towed. San Marcos is very tow happy, so just make sure to park in a spot that is Tap Room friendly.
Crowd- Lunch and early dinner, not a problem. Trying to get in after 8:30ish...good luck! It gets extremely crowded at night and I think the kitchen closes at 10 or 11.

I'm a little upset that I didn't see the fried mac and cheese on the menu...are they not making that anymore or did I just over look it? That was some good stuff too!!

My party of nine rolled in at about 7pm on a Monday after an afternoon of tubing on the river. Tap Room was recommended to us by a local, and at first, we definitely got the feeling that everyone there was a regular, and they were giving us cold looks. Seat yourself -- if you ask anyone for help, you'll get a rather short "What you see is what you get."

Despite the negative vibes at first, it didn't take long for me to realize why it seemed to be a local hot spot. The atmosphere and decor is great, the beer selection is immense, and at least compared to what you get up the road in Austin, the prices and food were exceptional.  I made out paying about $13 before tip for a delicious 1/2 pound queso guacamole burger, decent wedge fries, and 24 oz. of some beer I had never heard of, but wanted to try. =)

My favorite place in the whole wide world... except that is in San Marcos, Tx. I attended SWT, I refuse to conform to the name change, and would visit the Tap Room at least twice a week. Once on Thursday for $5 Beer and Burger, and once on the weekend for the normal beverage drinking activities. The burgers are the best around... ever, period.  The buns are sweet, like those of The Tavern on 12th in Austin. The meat is just has good and they please my palate by adding saute onions at your request. The fries are always hot and crispy with the perfect amount of seasoning.

The bar itself, it's somewhat a traditional looking bar. Hidden off the town square, it has wood paneled walls... i think... low lit... bar paraphernalia all over the walls... TV's in every corner... booths... cocktail tables...bar stools... and Golden Tee in the back, unless it's gone by now. The bartenders and wait staff are usually a bit unruly but when you consider they have to deal with inebriated college kids everyday, you too would be a bit pissy! I have had my fair share of altercations with the staff due to the company I kept but nothing ever got too out of hand and everyone usually brushed it off. But, this is the reason why i must give the Tap Room 4 stars instead of 5.

Let me remind you, this is located in a town with a super saturated population of college kids, so don't imagine anything other than what it really is... but if you are ever passing through at a decent hour and are hungry for a beer and burger, make the stop! It's worth it!
