Taste Budd's is just what the area needs. It's friendly, affordable, easy to get to, and above all very tasty. I go here and usually get the breakfast sandwiches or the breakfast specials. Good coffee, delicious desserts, too. As long as I will be in the Red Hook area, I will always go to Taste Budd's.
Review Source:Taste Budds, every Monday, 6-9. Â Knitting group on the comfortable couches. Â Last night I had their butternut squash soup. Â I asked them to serve it in a mug. Â No problem! Â It was amazing, very nicely seasoned. Â My favorite: Â A medium (24 oz.) iced (half the ice) chai latte. Â OMG!!! Â
Favorite Taste Budds quote from my young teacher friend: Â "The reason I moved to Red Hook: Â Taste Budds Cafe. Â
I love to see elementary kids come in with their Mom, or Dad, or both, and sit on the comfortable couches and read a book, next to a Bard student with the MacBook Pro, deep in studious thought. Â I love gazing at people hooking up for the first time. Â It's more than about the food. Â It's about the intriguing background music, it's about the experience, the mix of folks, that linger. Â The staff are warm, helpful and interesting. Â It's more of a slow food experience, to chat, to think, to linger. Â And, what's wrong with that?
I love Tastebuds! and I haven't even gotten to have the full experience of the place yet! The food is wonderful! the atmosphere is casual and fun. Coffee....excellent! Very important! I always read that there is live music and things to do there, but I never get the chance to get down there. They are very big in the community doing local street fairs, the big County fair.
You want good coffee, great food and a laid back atmosphere, check them out!
We all know Yelp is a good resource for consumers to gain insight into a business, but it's also a great way for a business to improve its offerings. In my previous review, I mentioned Taste Budd's lack of consistency with regards to its coffee drinks. The owner promptly contacted me and told me they were going to be upping their training. Well, I'm here to declare that their lattes and cappuccino have indeed improved markedly, and so I'm increasing my rating by a star. The pastries are still terrific, sandwiches are all fresh and tasty. It's a very welcome spot in our little town.
Review Source:I am a local and I've tried to like it here, but they make it so hard. To my palate, the coffee is very weak and flavorless. I've given up. The food is very good and pastries are excellent, but the service is so bad it's painful.  No  cafe worth their salt should take almost an hour to serve lunch at the rush. Some of the kids working there could care less , and are poorly trained and managed.
Review Source:I come here a lot. Actually, I come here almost everyday. It's a given that I will be at Taste Budd's at least once a day, if not two or three times a day. This is mostly because it is open longer than most of the other places in Red Hook, and is one of the only coffee joints in Red Hook.
As is with many places, they have good days and bad days. I have had coffee that has turned out to be a cup of half coffee grounds (gross), and sandwiches that were literally burnt black on one side. The food tends to be overpriced in general. The bagels are probably my favorite bagels from anywhere, and the breakfast sandwiches are always tasty. I am also a huge fan of the soy chai latte. I feel like the drawbacks are in general a result of allowing high schoolers to cook the food, and lack of clear management. But it is my most frequented hang out spot, and I would never stop coming here!
I agree with the other reviewers -- the food is good (usually) but overpriced and not really worth what you're getting. The only exception to this rule is their breakfast foods. Their egg and cheese sandwich on a roll and breakfast panini are to die for - I dream about the fluffy eggs they put on these sandwiches! Basic coffee and lattes aren't too bad either. Their dessert displays are beautiful, but the pastries are usually expensive, especially with the size of the pastry you're getting.
I didn't like hanging out here too often because it was always crowded, mostly with students from my school, and so hard to get around. The chairs, tables and couches are literally crammed up right against each other and one wrong step on the floor could end up with you tripping over a student's laptop cable.
Sometimes there's also live music, which is nice if you're just relaxing with coffee and food, but distracting if you're trying to do work. All in all, this was not my top choice for a favorite coffeehouse hangout. Good place to socialize though, since you'll probably bump into at least 10 of your Bard friends here.
The first time we came to Taste Budd's, they were doing this Cuban sandwich special and the sandwich itself was amazing. The iced latte I had was just okay, and the smoothie--being made with flavored syrup and soda (!) instead of all fruit and juice--was a huge disappointment and cloyingly sweet (not to mention terribly unhealthy). We got everything to go but it seemed to take forever and we thought maybe we just hit them at a bad time.
So we went back again once or twice and were not impressed. The food is good but, I think, slightly overpriced, and it seems to take FOREVER. I realize it's a coffee house with live music and stuff, so probably most of their customers are content to chill on the couches and wait a while for their food to be ready. We just stop in for sandwiches and a drink and aren't into standing around for 20 minutes waiting for a foccacia.
I probably would have dug this place a lot more when I was younger and had time to kill, but now, with a kid and a seemingly endless list of errands to run, it's just not my scene.
Ok, I'm a regular, because the location is so close to Bard where I'm at school. Â The food is ok, the coffee is ok. Â There are some yummy things on the menu like their Mac n Cheese is RIDICULOUS Yummers! Â They have some desserts to die for, and some you could definitely pass on. Â It's not consistent across the board. Â You have to hunt and peck to find the best stuff there. Â
Like today, I had a Foccacchia Sandwich, should have been divine, but... there were Big chunks of onion on one half, the cheese was off to the side and I didn't get why it was $8. Â Sigh. Â
The portions are small for the money, for example the Oatmeal. Â I know what Oatmeal costs, why the kiddy portion sized bowl? Â Seriously, I think you get Five Bites for $7! Â No bueno. Â
The coffee is good, really good, but I don't get why the stay cups are smaller than the to-go cups. Â
The internet there is as inconsistent as the food. Â Sometimes it works, but most times it doesn't which is a royal drag. Â
The service here flat out SUCKS! Â I am not sure why no one there smiles or who thought of how they serve food, but the thing is always a bit of a mess. Â Like, they will bring you food but not napkins or utensils. Â So you still need to get up and serve yourself. Â Why not just be self-serve??? Â Also, I seem to have to kiss ass to the staff to get them to smile, they all seem begrudgingly too busy to help me. Â It's annoying classic coffee house behavior, but these guys are wearing Tied Dies, so their bad attitude juxtapositioned against the hippie shirts really stands out.
That being said, it's ok. Â It's the spot by school where I can go and try and get stuff done. Â The food is totally edible, when the right person prepares it. Â The baked goods are pretty good, like the scones are pretty darned decadent. Â
If you want a killer sandwich and you don't care about WiFi, I'd hit JJs across the street instead. Â Better bang for your buck over there.
In my latest pursuit, for the purrfect Soy Chai Latte, I have been been disappointed and I have been brought to the heights of Chai rapture.
I needed to console myself after going to Red Hook to visit a specific shop. Which closed. Yesterday. Buggers! We spied down the street a groovy flash of signage and went to have a look. It was Taste Budd's. Catchy outdoor space but when we went in, I was surprised. I anticipated a chocolaterie and coffee joint but not the hipster vibe and the hunker down selection of furniture and seating. With Bard College nearby, I should be not surprised. If I were a student there, I would live here.
Besides dessert and "cofferings," they have sandwiches and other bites. I would certainly make this spot a must redo when next in Red Hook which has many other enticements lining its pretty streets.
Today the Soy Chai Latte was good but the search continues... For purrfection.
