This has to be one of the worst bars I have ever went to. The waitress was super slow and the food was cold. I ordered nachos which came out cold, and with out most of the toppings that were shown on the menu. I told the waitress that it was missing toppings and she raised her voice at me and said something along the lines of "that I didn't order the right one" (There was only one type on nacho on the menu.) They did bring out the toppings to me though. Â
My boyfriend and I wen't there a total of 5 times and 3 of the 5 times we went he ordered some fancy IPA Â bottled beer that he said of all the times that it was expired. Â So be careful with ordering bottled beer. Â
I must say though on St. Patrick's day they had a special type of mac and cheese that was amazing, other then that the food doesn't taste all that well (in my opinion). Â
Oh and to the girl who complained about the metal band on here.... If you see a band preforming and you know you aren't going to like the style of the music why stay? Â It's a bar not an opera people are not going to be to the classiest expectations. Â Also It's not the bar's fault that creepy men (who probably weren't even looking at you) hang out there.
We went there to use the 25 $ gift card I was given by the owner. Ordered a few drinks , had an app and a sandwich. Food was decent. Service average. Bathrooms and overall conditions are still below normal restaurant cleaning standards. I have seen enough of this place and by the looks of several other yelp comments the management / ownership refuse to clean and do the basic upkeep.
Review Source:Probably one of the worst dining experiences I've ever had. Went with my boyfriend to use a Groupon and sat outside because it was pretty pleasant out. Took a while to get our menus and noticed by the wait staff, but we just figured it was a busy night. My boyfriend ordered soup ane it came with no spoon, but the waitress promptly took off and we had to flag down a bus boy for a spoon. Even that kept him waiting another 5 minutes for it.
When we got our food, it was terrible! I ate part of my prime rib sandwich and my boyfriend took a bit and immediately spit it out, telling me he didn't know how I could have eaten that. We waited another 15 minutes for the check and another 10 for her to pick it up. The waitress was inattentive and brought us out drinks when we said we did not want any more. Other people around us seemed to have the same dining experience and were very disgruntled upon leaving.
Outside was nice. Â Great place to grab drinks with the girls. Â Drinks were good and fairly priced. Â Appetizers came in ginormous portion sizes. Â Service was very friendly.
However, the inside was dirty and ugly. Â Crowd was creepy and as three young girls, we felt kind of uncomfortable with the drooling of older men. Â The loud, heavy metal band was also kind of obnoxious since you could hear it outside and it didn't fit with the nicer environment.
I'd go back if someone else wanted to go, but it would definitely not be my first choice.
Here I am. I'm not even nervous anymore. I just don't care. Maybe it's the Prozac. Maybe it's the quarter-life crisis. Maybe it's just um... abandonment; the abandonment of the life I once had. Doesn't matter. Here I am. The local bar again. So this is what being a single twenty-something is like? This is it? It seems empty to me. Am I good-looking enough? I've been working out -- Â can you tell? I'd like to think you can tell. I'd like to think I'll be good at being single, when I'm ready to commit to it again. But I'm not really ready, and I don't know what I'm doing here, so I'll just try to have fun. Here I am.
I guess flirting with girls is fun. I never used to be able to do that. Now it's just a game. I think they're probably hopeful when I start talking to them. Intrigued. Can't say I blame them. But then I really start talking to them -- going off on them, getting personal, steering the conversation towards a pickup artist parody. It's more exciting that way to me. How many of these small town girls are accountants? I know you want to focus on your art, but the money is just too good, right? But let me ask you a question, and I don't mean to sound arrogant, but if you're an accountant, could you ever really appreciate me as a person? I mean, I'm very complex and deep, so... you can't manipulate me in predictable ways like a number. I'm not... I'm just not a number. Catch my drift?
You know... these small town girls... they know far too little about Pokemon. None of my Pokemon-themed pickup lines are working at Tavern on the Lake. What is a Pokemon Master to do? Catch 'em all? Will that satisfy me in any meaningful way? I don't want to catch them all. I had caught one -- and I was okay with that. It was enough for me. Or so I thought. The ball was wobbling a little; she broke free. Now I'm a master of nothing, and it feels just like old times again.
A-anyways, as I was saying, this is a local dive bar that has passable bar food but an ambiance of decay. The really pretty girls are all taken, and the leftovers know very little about Pokemon. Sad, really.
Took a wrong turn and took a chance! Â The historic building is nestled on an old time "Main Street". Â For location and food this is a five star, however for decor and service attitude it's a fallin' star. We stood at the hostess stand and at least five ( I counted) servers looked at us and did nothing. Â Finally a server came over, none of them smiled. Â I think they don't know they work in the "service" industry, must think their accountants. Â The only time they smiled is as they stood in groups and talked to each other. Â Besides that the food was amazing, the outdoor area pleasant. Â Timing was timed perfectly. Â I had a burger, bread doughy, meat tender, toppings decadent. Â The character filled spot has a wonderful relaxed vibe. Â Love that! Â The floor is falling apart and the decor could be updated. Â Overall would defiantly go back. Lets not throw the Tavern out with the Lake water:)
Review Source:My husband and I have always wanted to try Tavern on the Lake. When a Groupon came up we decided to try it. We walked in and found the hostess station in which there was no one there to seat us. A gentlemen sitting at a dining table informed is someone would be right over. We were brought to a narrow old looking room. The smell in the restaurant was unpleasant. Almost like they had a sewage problem. Not that overwhelming, but still noticeable. We Sat for a while before a waitress came over to take drink and an appetizer order. Drinks were brought and my husband slightly knocked the table and his soda and the glass tipped over. We started cleaning it and had to ask for additional help. As we were almost done cleaning the table, one of the waitresses noticed how shaky the table was and asked us to hold it so she could put coasters under one of the legs to balance the table out. Upon looking at other tables, this didn't look like an uncommon fixing since there were coasters and folded paper napkins under most of the tables legs. Our appetizer was brought out as we just starred to sit again. The mozzarella sticks were edible. We were done and our waitress still had not taken our dinner order. Waiting, waiting, waiting.....she finally reappears and takes our orders. Our Caesar salads came out with the most dressing ever seen on a salad, yet it had absolutely no taste. (side note, the croutons were good) we didn't eat the rest. My husband ordered the NY strip steak and it came out with a sauce smothered all over it. A good steak should never need a dressing such as what they used. I ordered the chicken Parm dinner. It as covered from plate end to plate end in cheese that there were puddles of grease. I had two bites and couldn't after that. We opted for no dessert. To be fair, the fries were descent and a woman came to our table with our check to apologize for our dissatisfaction where she didn't charge us for the chicken and gave us a $10 gift certificate to try the restaurant again. Although the waitress was very nice, she was on the slower side and it seemed like she had more important things to be doing in the back, although I'm pretty sure we were her only table. The place looked over staffed, yet the service was poor. We did see one waitress running around that looked like she was fantastic....too bad we didn't have her. We appreciated the apology and effort to have us come back for a better experience, but I think we had all we could. First impressions are important and theirs lacked anything to be desired. We would not recommend this place.
Review Source:I've never been disappointed with Tavern on the Lake. Â I've gone for a few occasions in the past, and even when they're extremely busy they've accommodated. Â You are given the choice to sit indoor or outdoor (during the warmer months). Â I have been pleased to have sit in both eating areas. Â I couldn't really say which atmosphere is better, because it's a preference. Â Every time I've gone, I've gotten a cheeseburger with fries. Â I'm afraid to differentiate because of how awesome their burgers are. Â Prices are modest at Tavern, considering their generous portions and value. Â I would say that their bar is up to most traditional standards. Â Plenty of televisions and a decent selection on tap. Â I've never experienced a problem with parking, as there is seemingly always a spot available. Â I would give Tavern 4.5 Stars and recommend them to just about anybody.
Review Source:On Mother's Day, we decided to give Tavern On The Lake a try. Â We had plans elsewhere canceled and always wanted to try the restaurant. Â It was a bit chilly outside and my Daughter and Wife wanted to sit inside. Â There were a number of tables inside and the Hostess sat us near the bar. Â After siting us down she came over and said that the Waiters and Waitresses complained that we were seated. Â So we left. Â I guess they wanted us to sit outside in the cold. Â
We went to Charlie Browns and had a great meal. Â Will never go back to Tavern on the Lake. Â Looks like this place needs Willie Degel and the Restaurant Stakeout team.
"A" had the pita wrap and it was huge and delicious. Â "M" had the $22 ribs that were so tender they refused to stay on the bone. Â This was a cool place but "lake view" is a little misleading. Â Sure the property may be near the lake but no real view from the restaurant, unless you sit outside in the parking lot. Â Happy hour on Saturday ends at 5. Â This was a good find, and if we're in the area again I'm sure we'd stop in.
Review Source:Clientele inside watching the Sunday football games were sketch but outside was normal people (without knowing me, what is "normal" right?). Â Anyhow, service was good and food was real good and fresh. Â Great onion rings, burger, sweet potato fries, Greek salad, mac & cheese, side salad. Â No, not all for me but I tasted all. Â What struck me odd was the amount of people working there. Â Probably better had they had fewer workers that were more professional. Â Weird, like some sort of restaurant internship. Â Funny, and annoying, was our waitress who told us of about 20, no lie, appies and entrees that good and great. Â Like going to your grandmother's favorite place and she goes through almost everything. Â If everything is "special" it starts to make you wonder. Â As stated though, everything was real good so...
Review Source:I've been here several times while in the area for business and I've always had a good experience. Â My last visit was about two weeks ago...I sat outside and the server couldn't have been more pleasant. Â I've also eaten at the bar a few times and the bartenders have always been attentive. Â Was there once on burger night and the burger was very good. Â On my last visit I had a salmon salad...salmon was crumbled over a bed of greens...it was delicious with a very tasty dressing.
Review Source:Everything we had was great. Waitress was extremely friendly, attentive and informative. She told me the ribs were fall off the bone, and she was right, they were great. I asked about beers on tap, so she brought over a sample of her favorite. Had a couple different martinis and they were very good. To top it all off, they have a http://restaurant.com deal that saved us a couple dollars. Just be mindful, I believe the coupon doesn't work for the specials. All good though, being that the menu is quite extensive and fairly priced. They also have a giant outdoor patio that's got a great view of the lake.
Review Source:It is what it is. Regular bar food. Stay away from the bland salmon burger. I must say that they have a decent selection of craft beers, which is nice....but being that they are the most convenient bar in this town...they should be introduced to soemthing called "Happy Hour"....this is a foreign word to Tavern still.
Review Source:If you're looking for great specials, Tavern on the Lake is the place to be. They have specials every night, but my favorite is Monday night Buffalo and Monster Mug Night. I start off with happy hour for cheap drinks and half off apps and at 6 they start 40cent wings and Monster Mugs. The food is delicious and the staff is very friendly! The patio is perfect for the summer too, with a great view Peddie Lake.
Review Source:I love trying out new places, especially non-chains! So, when my friend who works at TOL suggested I stop by, I hurried as fast as I could. TOL is really a nice spot right on the Peddie Lake. I especially like eating Al Fresco on their patio, and you will see many patrons doing that on a lovely spring or summer day. The staff are very friendly and helpful in selecting menu items. On my last visit, our waiter Zach recommended the Pork Cutlet sandwich. It was delicious with 2 pieces of breaded pork, caramelized onions, roasted bell peppers, roasted tomatoes, swiss cheese and spicy mustard on this crispy roll! I give it a, "thumbs up!" If you like the bar atmosphere, TOL has a great bar area with booths to dine at. I'd definitely recommend going for Happy Hour and trying their Buffalo Chicken Strips for $5. They are lightly fried with not a lot of heavy breading! All and all, a great little spot in the heart of Hightstown. If you're headed in or out of town, stop by TOL! Your belly will thank you!
Review Source:the place in decent and the outside seating can be very pleasant in the right weather. Â The wait and bar staff are very pleasant, but they keep changing them -- looks like they can't decide who they're trying to attract: the middle-aged folks or the 20-30 somethings. Â Can't they do both? Â The older folks are usually gone before or soon after the weekend entertainment starts and the kiddies take over. Â Too many young servers brings naivity into the mix. Â I liked is best when the staff most mostly the 30s-40s set with a few 20 somethings to spice up the mix. Â They took away some of the favorites on the menu. Â Some of their regular entrees are nice, but remember, it you want to be a sports bar, you're not also going to be a "fine dining" place. Â When all is said and and done, the bar is probably the mainstay of the place, and if I wanted a special occasion place, this would NOT be it. Â That being said, I love it for a casual and 'usual" Friday/Saturday night dinner out.
Review Source:Decent bar food. Â Offers good happy hour deals. Â I used to frequent this restaurant before they threw me for a loop when I tried to use a http://restaurant.com certificate. Â Beware if you try to use one here. Â I provided the certificate right when we were seated. Â When all was said and done they did not accept it and we had to pay full price. Â They claimed that the special for the night counted as a promo. Â The waiter at no time indicated that if we ordered this meal our certificate would be discounted. Â It was pretty frustrating. Â Be sure to ask if anything you order counts as a promo cause they will probably do the same to others.
Review Source:this place is dirty, smelly and disgusting. it should be condemned.
my beer glass had lipstick and scum all over it and i found more then 1 hair in my hot wings. the staff is nice but in no way efficient. Â the only reason i ate here was because i had an appt. across the street. if you are looking for cheap tavern food just go to the americana diner or city streets. please i beg you....do not go here.
It looked charming from the outside. It was late on a Saturday night and most places were closed. The outside deck looked like the place to be.
We arrived at the hostess podium and no one was there. No one showed up for over five minutes. We finally flagged down a waitress who sent an indifferent young lady over to seat us.
We sat outside. Between cigarette smoke and heavy traffic noise from the adjacent street it wasn't an aesthetic experience. We ordered an appetizer and our entrees at the same time (we should have known better) and yes, everything came at once. I had a pasta (served tepid) and my wife had a fish dish smothered in a cream sauce (also served tepid).
Unless you're really hungry after all of the other restaurants have closed, I say skip this place. You'll be better off at McDonald's.
I apparently had a much better experience at Theo's than the other Yelpers, although I agree that there appears to be no significant body of water in sight in downtown Hightstown.
I started with a tall Yuengling (on special for $3) and my companion had a decaf Irish coffee. Â She proclaimed it delish. Â We split the hummus plate, which was pretty good and included cucumber and olives. Â I would have preferred it if the pitas were toasted.
My piz-zeh burger was huge, although it wasn't "spicy" as described. Â They do tend to undercook the burgers a little - my medium was pink throughout - so keep that in mind. Â We didn't have any problems with the service.
