We have been twice and really liked it. Â The food and atmostphere are great. Â The last time we went was for our anniversary and the staff was very accomodating and took great care of us! Â We had the prime rib and it was delicious! Â I highly recommend this little out of the way place.
Review Source:I have to start by saying our service was impeccable. Our waitress was very nice and attentive. I had the scallops and they were delicious. It is on the pricier side for the area, but you get a lot of food for what you pay for. We went in late September for my birthday and there was only one other couple. I imagine it is a lot more busy in the summer. If we are ever in the Lake Anna area, I would definitely come back!
Review Source:I am puzzled about the negative reviews. Â We eat there many times and have never experiences a bad meal. Â We find that ALL of their seafood is well prepared. Â I personally don't like the cajun scallops, too much seasoning for me, but that is a personal taste. Â Their prime rib is very good. Â One reviewer here didm't like the green beans. Â If you like classic southern style green beans as I do, they are wonderful. Â They are not tender crisp and they shouldn't be. Â THey have a small but adequate wine list and a full bar (I think) Â The wait staff is always courteous and friendly and usually quite prompt unless it is REALLY busy. Â If there is one negative, sometimes I have to get my soup(they have really good soups) heated somewhat more. Â That's it....end of negatives.
In short, one of the two best restaurants in the Louisa area.
Took my wife here--hour long drive--for her birthday. Service was slow but friendly. In fact, our server, Valerie, made my wife's otherwise terrible experience bearable. Her steak, a $30 filet, arrived burned. Not overcooked, burned. The table next to us had two similar steak problems. Luckily, the chef cooked my wife's second steak, and it turned out great! Â Sadly, the table next to us received a microwaved attempt to fix an undercooked steak. Did I mention it was $30? Â My meal, the sides and salads were all very tasty. Nothing worth an hour long drive or $80 price tag after just one glass of wine, but good. We won't be back. There are plenty of average, overpriced places within a 15-minute drive from home.
Review Source:This restaurant has a very nice setting and a pleasant decor. Â The service is OK. Â But the most important part---the food---is, in our opinion, awful. Â Not to mention unhealthy. Â For example, a mainstay consists of these awful overcooked green beans that are absolutely drenched in salt. Â I Â can hardly eat them without coughing. Â Also, portion sizes are stingy. Â Meals are high in fat but still manage to be low on taste. Â I wish the owners would hire a decent chef and change the menu radically. Â Then we'd go there more often!
I don't see how anyone could seriously claim that the food is "amazing." Â Those reviews must have been written by employees, or the owners, or their friends.
We went here our first night vacationing on Lake Anna. There were six of us and we were starving and this place happened to be near the lake house.
The service was pretty slow, and our server was very unfriendly. She was very impersonal and it appeared like she had better things to do than wait on our table. I don't know if she was having a bad night or what, but it made for a bad start to our dinner.
We were sat without a wine list, and the server did not know what kind of beer they sold, so she had to leave to get that info. After we placed our drink orders it took more than ten minutes for them to arrive, and the restaurant wasn't all that busy. The menu had some Virginia classics like ham and ribs, as well as some other steak and seafood items. Most of us got the ribs which were decent but the sauce was a bit off. I don't know exactly what it was, and I'm open to all sorts of BBQ sauce, so for it to not taste all that good says something.
When we were finished eating we had to wait quite some time before the server came over. In fact, she never stopped by while we were eating to see how everything was going and if we needed anything.
I wouldn't recommend coming here if you're in the area.
I was a bit skeptical, but this place out did itself. We came around 8 on sat and had 3 courses and wine with the family. It's not too formal (I mean, it IS in bumpass) but nice enough for a special occasion without a long drive. The food was amazing, I will definitely be eating here again.
Review Source:This is a very great and wonderful place. Â The food steak, shrimp, salid,,soup are great. Â But the oysters are superb. Â My sister stumbled upon this place by accident while traveling to Richmond from Louisa. We think it is a most excellent place to eat and relax at. Â The owners and staff are very nice country people as well
I can not understand how anyone could get on here and have the nerve to say the food here was bad. Â alright sometimes the waiter or waitress is a bit slow in taking orders and delivering the drinks, and picking up the check. Â But there is generally only one or two servers working the floor. Â But to set there and say the food is bad or worse yet terrible just isn't true. Â The owner is the chef and she goes out of her way to accommodate her guest. Â My mother who is 85 this month will only go here for her birthday. Â And she request the asparagis soup which is excellent. Â We usually get all oysters or oysters and steak. Â Never usually have room for desert. Â Usually end up taking some food home. Â We have been coming here now for several years and will continue to come as long as they are open.
We too found this place by accident, and bless the day that we found it. Â Great old building and fine country owners, who work very hard. Â They deserve the thanks of many for their efforts and their loyal customers keep coming back for more.
And yes they have the best oysters than anywhere else in the area of a hundred miles.
My family says thank you very much for the great food and friendly atmosphere.
We drove down from northern VA; about 75 miles. Had heard good reports and wanted to try for ourselves. Very nice place way out in the country. Very nice staff & very good food. But the four of us agreed it was too far away to make this a regular affair. Now if we lived at Lake Anna, this would get another star from us.
Review Source:Tavern on the Rails is a rural restaurant in a restored standalone country store. It is about 35-40 miles northeast of Richmond, Virginia. The restaurant is filled with antiques and atmosphere. The food here is very good and moderately priced. I have taken my wife and friends here for special occasions and we all have enjoyed the food and the homey nature of the place.
The menu choices include; steaks, seafood, Virginia ham and even burgers for the kids. I prefer the Steak Diane.
The restaurant is open only a couple of days each week Thursday -Saturday and reservations are suggested.
I think this place is certainly worth the drive and I plan to return.
